Game Day Heat

2:31 AM EST Dave Johnson back from Cleveland….and yes that one was a tough one to stomach..when the Wizards were able to build an 18 point lead in he first half  by no means did I think the game was over but I also did not expect things to spin around so dramatically in the Cavs favor….There is no question foul trouble on our bigs impacted our rotation and our ability to do things both on offense and defense. Still the Wizards could have managed the second quarter better when they built the big lead. The turnover difference in many ways was the difference—The Wizards lost by 12 and the Cavaliers had 17 points off 14 Wizards turnovers while the Wizards had only 5 points off 7 Cavalier turnovers—a difference of 12. Still credit the Wizards for playing  through the bumpy spots and like the loss to Atlanta they were still competing and in position to make a run in fourth quarter. There will be an audio report on the BLOG highlighting that terrific start. We move on…..tonight it is  the Miami Heat at Verizon Center…BLOGCAST—radio and live blogging together–starts at 7 ….our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore it is FOX  SportsRadio 1370 AM and great stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link.

Wow Dave you are up early, man we got to get a win so you can get some sleep, lol…Here’s to a win for the home team tonight!

A wise man once said (taken from msn.com)

They slowed the game down and pounded the ball inside to their big man, forcing JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche and Brendan Haywood to hack or pay. McGee picked up four fouls in less than 10 minutes.

Haywood felt O’Neal was getting too many calls.

“In the first half we had 12 fouls on our bigs alone,” Haywood said. “You read in between the lines all you want to. It definitely took away our aggressiveness. No one could be aggressive as they wanted to because you knew you were strapped with fouls.”

Last night would have been the time to activate Paul Davis. He was a good matchup for Cleveland and we needed big men, not guards. JMHO

morning dave/fellow bloggers,

the refs made alot of bad calls. but i think its not totally their fault. give credit to the cavs for containing gilbert. i didnt like how the wizards couldnt move the ball. we should work on that especially with all the shooters we have now, someone is going to be open.

but that was the past and today is a new day. lets bounce back and put this game behind. we’ll play the cavs again soon. Lets go Wizards!

That one play when Haywood was going for a basket and Shaq had his hand shoving and another Cavs player hit him in the head but the refs called in offensive foul…The Cavs mainly L James complained almost the entire game on each call that went against them. Even the obvious calls were seen as a bust. That got the refs to start blowing their whistles in favor of the Cavs…

After 4 games, the Wiz is the classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde team.

In the 2 wins, the Wiz were sensational. In the Dallas game, the Wiz’s DEFENSE got them the win (along with Foye dropping nearly 18 pts on an unsuspecting Mavs team). In the Nets game, well – the Wiz’s offense was on point and Blatche did whatever he wanted over The Chairman. Arenas was also very efficient.

In the 2 losses, the Wiz were absolutely terrible in most phases of the game. In the Atlanta game, the entire offense had no flow and turnovers (majority from Arenas) doomed the team. Against the Cavs, it was a team that did whatever it wanted early and then went ice cold when the Cavs dropped more bombs from downtown than the Brits did in Dresden.

Sure, you can say the refs were absolutely terrible as well in the Wiz’s 2 losses. I can’t really argue that because it seems like all the NBA refs are subpar at the moment. However, the thing that disturbed me the most is both the Hawks and Cavs didn’t play particularly well and they still “blew the Wiz out of the water”. This is unacceptable for a team that is mostly healthy with weapons. This is a veteran team that shouldn’t require hours and hours of additional coaching to get things done right. Heck, if Flip is a good coach, losing an 18 point lead yesterday should not have happened. I know that never happened in Detroit when Flip was there.

Refs were terrible in the Cavs game, the Hawks just plain out hustled, wanted more, and bad shooting by the Wizards. Just because we lost 2 games I am not blaming the refs but they certainly influenced the outcome with their bias calls in that Cavs game.

Lets get a win tonight — last night is over.

As to the refereeing and fouls, please look at the boxscore: we went to the line 41 times. They went to the line 27 times. Fans *always* think their team doesn’t get calls.

That was a terrible game, but the Wizards and Flip can take the blame too.
The plays called were not the best. I could not understand why Arenas got no help up top, there should always have been the other guard there.
Instead he either dribbled towards the side where he could get stuck, or the other guard was not available to bail him out. And what ever happened to the cutting to the basket that was supposed to happen off the ball?
Deshawn in the game was pretty bad too, fine he contributed to the defense but Dominic could have done just as well and added to the offense as well with his height and court savvy. Bad matchups. All in all one big yuckk!

The success/failure of a team in basketball can frequently be measured by how the team gains momentum, keeps momentum, and loses momemtum. Last night the Wizards took the momentum from the 2 minute mark of the 1st quarter and held it until almost the end of the 1st quarter. Even though the Wiz led by 14 at the end of the first and extended the lead to 18 early in the 2nd quarter, the momentum had begun to shift. It shifted because the Wiz could no longer play the same type of defense that they used early in the first quarter because the referees had called multiple fouls against the Wiz big men and very little against the Cav’s big men. It was almost as though the refs concluded that the Wiz were about to beat the Cavs by over 30 in Cleveland unless something changed.

It’s not necessarily the number of fouls called on each team that matters. It’s the timing of the fouls, the type of fouls and the accuracy of the fouls. Last night I thought that the Wiz (even without AJ) were +15 better than the Cavs, but the refs made it otherwise.

Comment from llballa19
Time November 4, 2009 at 12:11 PM

Last night is behind the Wizards. They need to get ready for the Heat.

They should already know what to expect when facing the Cavaliers. We just were unable to sustain the high level of play from the first quarter. We did not play defense or rebound at that same high level after the first.

At this point, this team has to be mature enough to play through rough spots. The stats do show the Wizards went to the line 41 times to the Cavs 27, but stats at times can be misleading.

The 2nd quarter was a tough one. Haywood, Blatche and Oberto was on the bench for most of it. I really think that interrupted the great rhythm. I have to give credit to Shaq for imposing his will on the game. McGee was no match and he had 4 fouls in a short period of time.

In the end we lost track of the three point shooters and they were able to control the game.

Tonight we have to play well the entire game and it is good that we are at home. I expect the Wizards to rebound with a win.

No @ Tom. The Box Score said s*** about how poorly the refs one-sided the contest. It’s not about the number of calls – it’s how the calls were made to basically make Shaq invincible. The “home court advantage” was at full effect … and then some.

If you scroll through the blog from last night’s contest, just read the fan reactions about calls (i.e., jeffmalone, dcbutler, 2steps, etc.). To quote Flip (it’s pretty easy to read his lips), this is horse s***!

Speaking of Flip, he went after the refs like no other and he didn’t even get a T. How is this justified when his guys got called from touch fouls? Shaq mauled DeShawn and only got a regular foul. I could go on and on. It was nonsense. Phil Chenier and Buckhantz were basically appalled by these same calls on the tube. Heck, I was listening to Dave and Glenn for the entire second half and even both those guys couldn’t believe what was happening.

hey gang dave checking in late AM…great points as always…and I think you all know when I say foul trouble…I mean trouble on certain players (the big men) that then had an impact…and getabigboyoffense your point was what flip was talking about at the end of the gam(not the ref part) but the fouls on certain players that hurt on not only defense but on offense in terms of setting screens etc and how aggressive the wizards could be…..but that was not the only reason the wizards lost…I still think we had some bad possessions in that second quarter that helped the Cavliers cut away at the Wizards 18 point lead…The Cavliers are capable of cutting in to a lead in no time…but last night in the first half they were not having the best of halves and so it was just a slow erosion of the Wizards lead….But on to tonight…

Trust me, I know last night was frustrating to watch. But here’s something to give all you Wiz fans hope:

With all the injuries from last year, we essentially have 6 new players joining this team. Add on an entirely new coaching staff, and you’ll see that it is going to take some time for this team to learn how to gel. I think if we can hang around .500 until December or so, we will be in great position. The fact that we see a lot of mistakes early on is expected, but the fact that we see a lot of promise is something we can build on. Trust me, in a few months, the mistakes will decrease and the promise will become expected.

Let’s stay afloat while Antawn is out, then when he’s back and the team is a little more gelled, we’ll really get going. Where we rank in the East doesn’t even really matter to me. I think we can beat any team in a 7 game series. So let’s take our time, get healthy and comfortable, and then when playoff times roll around…we’ll hand our business.

GO WIZ

Comment from Rick
Time November 4, 2009 at 12:48 PM

It’s way too easy to blame the refs. The wiz need to play better with a lead… continuing to play tough defense and not relax and assume that all shots are going to continue to fall on offense.

I would like to see Caron play more catch and shoot, like Nick Young, instead of getting isolations on the wings. Flip, let’s make it easier for Caron please!

Comment from reddog271
Time November 4, 2009 at 12:57 PM

they do need to play better with the lead. but it was like the refs looked at the score after the first quarter and was like oh no, we can’t have this. All 3 centers ended up with at least 3 fouls with 6 mins left in the second. Game over after that. you can’t be aggressive at that point.

Comment from jjs5
Time November 4, 2009 at 12:59 PM

I do not buy, for one second, this “don’t blame the refs” mentality. The Wizards were in the process of blowing the Cavs out, and the refs stepped in and would not allow that. This is qualitatively different than the star treatment of even 10 years ago. This was blatant engineering of the game, by the refs.

Did the Wizards give up? Yes. And I don’t blame them, anymore than I would blame the Washington Generals for not giving 110%.

If every time you tough an opponent a foul is called, while on the other end, they can mug you (sometimes with an offensive foul called!), then you cannot win. Period.

I’ve been a fan of basketball for well over 20 years. It wasn’t always like this. Jordan and Magic got some calls, but there was always the possibility that they would lose.

It is a sad statement, but it is clear that the NBA is marketing itself towards the kind of fans that cheer when a player is lying on the floor after a cheap, viscous foul, and not towards fans of basketball.

GABBO — there is *no* question that the early fouls on our bigs took us out of the mode where we were dominating the game. And, obviously, the boxscore can’t show you that :!:

But the boxscore does tell you that if we make a few more of our 3s, make our FTs more efficiently, and do a better job on the Cavs 3-point shooters, we win the game. And it does tell you that Gil went 7 for 18.

Per a previous comment, I don’t know why Mike isn’t shooting more or why the offense doesn’t set him up more often.

Still, watching the first 15 minutes was fun; we were incredibly efficient and made almost no mistakes. We’re a good team, and we’re 2-2 after 4 games. Anybody remember the last time we started this well?

Comment from Rick
Time November 4, 2009 at 2:46 PM

@jjs5 and all the other foul complainers… are you saying that our bigs were not committing fouls?! Because they were. If the refs were missing calls it was more about not calling fouls on the Cavs, in my opinion. And that would not have done much to keep our bigs in the game.

My boi Deshawn was off, caron played as if he was a one man show, and miller shoes got him embarrassed when he tried to stop LBJ in the open court. Look i wanted a win but i would rather get better as a team in this young nba season. Give the Cavs their respect, they hit big 3’s. Even Lbj had a few with some out of this world passes. Its just one game and the truth is we havn’t won anything so stop calling this a rivalry. We look good on paper , but thats it until we transfer that energy into our game.

@gobbo I 100% agree with your post, and I will move on looking at the Heat tonight. One last note, it was not the number of fouls it was who and when the fouls were called, it changed the momentum of the entire game. Did we foul last night “yes”, however some of the calls took away what could have been a great game, IMO!

@Wiz_Hype-The Wizards will be in the top 4 in the East, and at the lowest a 5th seed for the playoffs. All teams lose big leads, all teams in the NBA have enough talent to make a run (look at OKC or the Grizz) while I agree great teams close out games, however those same teams also lose some!

I will give the Cavs credit for getting a home win, however to say that the outcome was not determined by a few questionable calls, I just cannot do that. So let’s get a bit of our home cooking tonight at home versus the Heat, and I am sure that Beasley wants to play big back home in front of friends and family. Should be fun and of course an important game within our division.

I dont; know why everyone is down. There’s 82 games not 22. We have to work on the basic stuff before we try to shock the world. basket ball people know that you rarely go form a handful of wins to a ring. This aint the nfl 99 rams. In the nba the best teams are always there in the in. We have to just take what we can and learn. We didn’t make the playoffs last year so why should we get the calls. We have to earn the respect of the nba. Even when the other teams yaps to the refs, we need to just play our game. Thats why its call a hostile environment people. Its just the team and coaches vs the whole city.

The refs definitely were a little bias toward the cavs but that cant put the ball in the basket for either team. The Wiz were off last night and couldnt make a shot at the same time that the cavs (gibson) got hot from 3 point land. We need to get better at our free throws. Shaq shot a better % from the line than Arenas!!

I know that the horse might be dead, but I’m going to try to get him to stand up and take nurishment one more time…

If forces beyond your control (the refs) unjustly take away your game plan by making bad calls at strategic times during the game, it has an effect on the entire game. It has an impact on who is setting screens so that the outside shooters get a good look at the basket (fewer 3 pointers); it impacts who is executing the pick and roll (fewer easy baskets); it determines who is playing defense against the building in the low post (more easy baskets for him); it determines defensive matchups and rotations and even whether we will be playing man-to-man or the match-up zone; it impacts how open Miller might be able to get for his shot if he has to be in better rebounding position because our bigger guys are on the bench.

Committing the same, or close to the same, number of fouls is not the relevant issue. The issue is when the fouls are committed and by whom. It’s a momentum thing; it’s not a stat thing.

I agree, WizardsRadio. We lost because of low percentage possessions. A couple of passes and a two point attempt from the perimeter is a sure-fire recipe for a loss.

Fusion, man you must be as old as dirt too. My condolences. I didn’t realize anyone else knew how many bombs were dropped on Dresden.

If Stevenson can’t hit that 3 pointer, he falls out of my rotation. I know he plays good D, but he’s got to contribute something on the other end. He doesn’t assist much, he doesn’t rebound much, he doesn’t penetrate. I think we have a 3-way competition – him, Young and McGuire. I would only give Stevenson another game or two before making a change. Either give Young a chance at the two or go to a three guard rotation and let McGuire, rather than Miller, back up Butler (my preference). If McGuire contributes more on the offensive end (assists, rebounds), there’s no reason to play Stevenson over him. And I don’t care that Stevenson is more experienced.

no need to panic guys. we have to remember to look at the big picture here. The first game was great to get a win, but we have to understand we are still trying to develop a chemistry and sync with each other. Once we get into the season a little more we will see a totally different wiz team that blows away teams like the heat…and yes even teams like the cavs! it will just take time and a healthy roster. Look for the wizards to be a force after the christmas break

Comment from dlts20
Time November 4, 2009 at 9:21 PM

Caron & Wood have to be the worst 2 finishers in the league right now. They are killing us with these missed layups. Atleast draw the foul. I still dont like the way our O is designed at times. It just seems too easy to trap Gil out top, atleast without AJ. Even without him though, I talked about this yesterday, I dont see him going hard off the hard screen like in the past and that was our #1 play by far. Wood or AJ would come out and set the high screen, Gil would go around it real tight so that he’s one on one with the big and no big can stay with that. Thats why I thought we would beat the Cavs but we havent been doing it.

Instead we set the high screen and Gil basicaly just dribbles slowly to the other side of it and waits for the trap. I guess Flip likes that because he figures that it should be 4 on 3 but I still would like to see us go hard with it sometimes because everyone is watching film and thats what every team is following. I even remember when Gil use to use Wood as a sling shot, grab his shirt, and sling right by him. Now its nothing like that. Gil is not even really that close to him and its so easy for the PG to get around it and be back in front of Gil again instead of having him matched up with the big. This game is still there to be won but we have to pick up the tempo instead of walking like we were doing early and we have to be smarter on D instead of letting Wade get all the guys up in the air

Just getting back from the game….I have to keep in mind that it’s only the fifth game….

WHY OH WHY didn’t McGuire get in the game and guard DWade???

Why O Why was stevenson in for so long (not to mention the free throws)

We blew that one big time, it’s time for Flip to Coach and Gil to listen, I’m sure the last couple of possessions didn’t get drawn up like that!!!!

Comment from dcbutler357

oh my, wifey was even sitting there saying, why are they running the same plays “gil bring ball down, pass it, give it back to gil and he tries some shot….”

The crowd got into it, but instead of shooting the three gil tried an alley oop to haywood??? On the other end, DWade (calls or not) showed why HE is a superstar, cool calm and collective. We have got to do better!!! We looked like misfits going into the final seconds and please use that bench of ours better!!! We are looking worse each game.

Comment from GrifonRacing

Hiya Bridgy welcome back! Missed ya Girl :)

After going down early we fought back and made a real ball game out of it. That’s with everyone but Brendan having a sub par night. That shows team sand. We played them hard and close until (Thank You DCB) those last two questionable offensive plays (offensive being the key word :) ). There is “no way” Flip designed those last two plays. If we had played it smart we might at least have gotten the tie if not the win outright. As you say though it’s early and we did scrap and fight. If we can harness all the positives and bring them consistently we would be a top tier team.

I saw that too. Why was Deshawn in there closing out the ball game? Had he done anything within the game to merit it? I kept hoping Flip would put Foye or even Nick in, but, nope. Oh well clank went the 3 pointers and free throws.

We have a good team….. a good coach…. and plenty of time left in the season.

Go Wizards

Yeah… It didn’t look like Miller got hit that hard but he certainly seemed to be in a lot of pain. Musta been one of those awkward hits. Hitting the floor on the same shoulder didn’t help. I couldn’t understand why they put “righty” back in the game after the initial incident. That “truely” one handed pass to Blatche right before he went out was highlight reel. The one armed rebound before that wasn’t too bad either. That man is a Warrior. Glad he is a Wizard. Get well quick Mike we need you. SHOOT MORE PLEASE

He tweaked his left shoulder running into a pick. They took him out and put an icy/hot patch on it and put him back in where he again tweaked it. Then going to the basket he fell on it…. they took him out after a series of amazing one handed plays. It didn’t look like any of the hits to the shoulder were hard but they could have been those nasty awkward hits that seem to do the most damage. I’m keeping everything crossed.

We’re just rusty and we have to learn to get used to each other on the court. Gil and Brendan are in comeback seasons after injuries; Miller was not a Wizard last year, nor was Oberto. The only starter in tonight’s game with any Wizard experience from last year was Caron.

We outplayed a very good team from the first quarter on…and we’ll get better.

Does anyone know the last time the Wizards won a game when Delaney was a referee? What is our record when he works our game?

Either Delaney or Javie spell doom for the Wizards. always have. Javie is easier on us than when Wes Sr was involved. Musta been “something” there.

Morning in Paris… checking the blog…. depressed

Also have a voicemail from my youngest brother, explaining that the offense is stagnant at times… Ball movement is bad… Too much isolation on Gil & Butler’s parts.

Lets go Wiz! Get it together.
TOO MUCH TALENT to be giving games away early. These things count.
Jumped on both Atl & Clev early only to have them adjust & get us into foul trouble…

We’ll figure it out. We HAVE to!

Thanks to everyone for blogging (helps me get context). Especially Dave & Glenn… & you too Dom (I mean Tom).

i agree m2, the offense is just too stagnant at times, and that’s part of the reason the wizards started off so horribly.

it seems like when gil is in the game, the rest of the wizards are just watching him, and he winds up holding the ball for 14 seconds before there is a pass, and then the wizards are trying to get something going with little time on the shot clock; not good offense.

caron’s game is really bothering me as well. he’s always been a guy to go one on one to get his points, but imo he needs to work harder off ball instead of relying on doing everything with the ball. and he needs to learn how to sell fouls, draw contact, or finish at the rim, because the refs aren’t going to give anything away if you don’t know how to do at least one of those three. mabye caron should take lessons from kevin martin.

as for gilbert, i kinda don’t like this system of him holding the ball for so long. i think if he has the ball, he should be doing something with it, but last night there were times where he was just holding the ball waiting for others to get open, which led to ugly possessions and turnovers. hopefully flip can get that straightened out.

but the real thing i want to say is, i hope antawn gets well soon. he’s the real leader out there, no matter what flip or gil tells us or the media, he’s the only guy out there who has proven he can lead this team. hopefully he as well as miller get well soon, but tbh i’m not that worried about miller. i’ve sprained an ankle and wrist before, and contact just drives it crazy, but it surprisingly didn’t take long to heal. we’ll see how miller does.
