Game Day Cleveland

5:54 AM…Game Day Cleveland….need I say more…Dave Johnson checking in…and of course looking forward to tonight…it is a great rivalry because there have been some great games –inlcluding playoff encoumters–between the Wizards/Cavaliers. And some of those games have had shall we say interesting endings….So my ears are already ringing because it is going to be loud….It is a big plus that Caron Butler returns tonight. What we know about this Wizards team so far is that it is quickly developing a chemistry and that it has some fight. That loss to Atlanta was not about effort but execution becuase there were opportunities to win that one against a very good Hawks team that was not having a good night. We also know the Wizards defense is improved and certainly the additions and healthy returns have played a role in that. Opponents are only shooting 42% from the field and 30 % beyond the arc.…Cleveland is excited about the return of Delonte West and has won two straight. They have used Shaquille O’Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas in a lineup at the same time and Mo Williams is starting to get hot. He was 8 of 12 beyond the arc the last two games….and they tell me this guyLeBron can still play….BLOGCAST–radio and LIVE blogging  combine to put you court side—continues tonight….and tonight we need the BLOG to rock…I am superstitious….BLOGCAST starts with the radio at 7 and Flip Saunders pre-game comments…..remember our new flagship is 106.7 FM in Washington and in Baltimore it is FOX SportsRadio 1370 AM….and we have stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg on our network.. and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link.

5:19 PM…Dave and Glenn checking in from Quicken Loans Arena…Wizards have lost five staright here at  the Q..of yes I am ready for a win here and so is the team….story in the Cleveland Plain Dealer says the rivalry has faded….but I heard pretty loud boos in pre-season when we were here and even when not healthy we have had competitive games with the Cavs…in fact we were 2-2 last year against the Cavaliers and lost here on Christmas night 93-89..and about that Christmas game…never mind..it will get my blood pressure up

6:39 PM….starters are in….Cavaliers will go with Mo Williams and Anthony Parker in the back court..Shaquille O’Neal in the middle…and LeBron James and Anderson Varejao the forwards..Wizards will have Gilbert Arenas and Mike Miller in the back court..Brendan Haywood in the middle…and Caron Butler and Fabricio Oberto the forwards

The Wizards didn’t negotiate an extension to Randy’s contract (along w/ the whole ‘06 class, his rookie deal is ending). He’ll be a restricted FA at season’s end. Few of the guys in that class were able to get that done (Aldridge, Roy and Rondo are the main exceptions). No doubt, the economy is the main factor influencing what is a pretty unusual event.

More interestingly, the Wizards did NOT pick up the 4th year option on Critt’s rookie contract. That makes him an *unrestricted* FA at season’s end. His time as a Wizard is likely over in other words (especially given the signings we *need* to make next off season).

Any thoughts?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 3, 2009 at 8:48 AM

On the other hand :) the Twolves didn’t pick up Pech’s 4th year option either, making him unrestricted at season’s end.

Hey, welcome back Pech :!:

good morning! lets go Wizards!!! i just hope this game will not be decided on a bad call by the refs! this game will def show how deep this wizards team is. lets get this win.

Go Wizards!!!!!

Time November 3, 2009 at 9:15 AM

@Tom,

It’s hard to believe the Wizards didn’t pick up the 4th year option on Foye or J-Critt, as we will need a back up point guard. So now that leaves us with three Free agents PG’s Foye, J-Critt and James. We will defiantly have to pick up someone.

Can the Wizards still match an offer given to Foye or J-Critt by other teams in the offseason?

Comment from millie mill
Time November 3, 2009 at 9:17 AM

@Tom,

Pech is getting playing time. He will be at the end of someone’s bench next season, or playing overseas.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 3, 2009 at 9:26 AM

millie mill — read it again. Foye’s at the end of his rookie contract. We didn’t *have* an option on him. We simply didn’t negotiate his next contract. He’ll be restricted; yes, we’ll have a chance to match. He won’t be expensive.

Crittenton is a different story. We did have his option but declined it. He’ll be a UFA. His option was for $2.78m; apparently we didn’t think he was worth that — or that he’d get that much in the open market (he won’t).

Most remarkable of these stories is that the Bucks didn’t pick up Joe Alexander’s *3d year* option. One year and 3 games, and they’ve given up on the guy they took with the 6th pick in the ‘08 draft. I seem to remember a lot of bloggers here in love with him, btw: “can head butt the rim” etc.??

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 3, 2009 at 9:30 AM

From Hoopshype: “Of all the NBA players drafted in the first round between 2003 and 2007, 23 became free agents sooner than expected after having contract options declined. Among that group, only seven remain in the league today.”

Those are the odds on Pech, Critt, etc. having long NBA careers.

with coach asking Caron to be more committed to Defense, it’ll be nice to see how he matches up with Bron. being an All start himself. maybe he won’t get called for the touch fouls that Dmac would.

Comment from maggicman11

is it definite that caron is back tonight?

Comment from millie mill
Time November 3, 2009 at 10:59 AM

@Tom,

If Foye plays well as a back up PG and along side Areans he will be back next year. James and Critt comes off the books next year. We also have to sign Haywood.

You said, Foye won’t be expensive. You don’t know that. I have seen Worst players get big contracts just by the play in the playoffs alone. Look at James Posey and Jeffers. Foye could be a difference maker, season is too early to tell. I think the Wizards will wait to see what other teams offer. Like Denver did with J.R. Smith.

Comment from Jaba
Time November 3, 2009 at 11:35 AM

I wonder if Critt will actually play for the Wizards THIS year. Is there a role for
him? It also seemed like in interviews Flip talked about every player on the teamexcept Javaris (or maybe I just missed that). I really liked his potential, however looking at our rotation taking shape, it’s getting harder and harder to see him playing at all. Let’s wait and see.

I would love to stay up for tonights game, however I’ve got a tough day tomorrow, so I need to get sleep. (We’re 6 hours ahead of you guys here in Germany). Will sleep with fingers crossed! GO WIZARDS!!!!

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time November 3, 2009 at 11:48 AM

The Mistake-by-the-Lake refuses to get out of the low post on both offense and defense. That reduces the chance of a double-team on our perimeter players when we have the ball, and reduces the chances of Shaq setting any high screens for LeBronze when the Cav’s are on offense. By now I’ll bet that #23 wishes that they had not signed the “Mistake”. If our centers run the court, we’ll get some easy baskets because Shaq won’t run and if he tries to a few times, he’ll be exhausted and on the bench.

CB is back. It’s time to give the NBA a look at just what the Wizards can do..and then wait until AJ is back.

Thumbs up for ‘Dray tonight.

Go Wiz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andray’s got his hands full tonight. He’s going up against a cheapy Varejao that knows how to get into people’s heads. Blatche can’t get frustrated if his shot isn’t falling as easily. He’s gotta keep playing aggressive.

With as much as these two teams have played against one another in the last 5 years, I think Washington is more comfortable playing at the Q than any other Eastern Conference opponent. The Q is a tough place to win for road teams, but if any team can do it – it is mostly Washington on a more consistent basis.

Can’t wait for tonight’s game. I don’t know if it’s a rivalry but, there’s certainly bad blood between us & the Cavs. I expect this game to have a playoff atmosphere. If we play our game (share the ball, Defend, & rebound) we should win!!! GOOOOOOO WIZ !!!!!!!

Just saw a play where Gerald Wallace fell back into Yi Jianlian’s knee !!! Is this guy a dirty player or just clumsy? Hopefully it won’t take him as long as it took for Gil to recover.

Comment from llballa19

That was a just an unfortunate play. Gerald Wallace was hustling and Yi just happened to be in the wrong place.

Comment from M2
Time November 3, 2009 at 1:35 PM

Dom
I’d do everything I could to hold Foye… He needs to be a DSC main-stay for at least a handful of years. DSS is about done & Gil seems to really like Foye, keep them together like Butler & Tawn have been together at the forward spot for a few years 7 a few more to come.
Crit is an unfortunate casualty, I REALLY like him but also understand the market. I do think he’ll hand around the league for a long time because of his penetration skills & rangy defense. Would LOVE if he was able to stay in DC & run back-up / play more when injuries get us down. I like his spirit, etc.
Oh well…

As for tonight, I step on a plane in LA at 4pm wst & ride for 11 hours thus missing the entire thing.
You can’t imagine how bummed I am.
I will check the blog tomorrow & browse the 500 plus posts for retrospective insight, so I thank you all in advance!

Does anyone know if Larry Hughes wearing the #0 for the Knicks has anything to do with Gilbert? Walt “Clyde” Frazier said that he is the first Knicks player to wear #0.

Comment from Babakism
Time November 3, 2009 at 2:07 PM

Jeff Teague wearing number 0 must have everything to do with Gil.

Comment from M2
Time November 3, 2009 at 2:29 PM

For the record (because I investigated for arguments sake with a friend at Nike), in the NCAA tourney 2 seasons ago (you know, right after Gil was 2nd team All NBA & made his 3rd straight All Star game) 31 of the 65 teams entering the tournament wore number 0…
My argument with Nike was the Gilbert (an Adidas athlete) had made the number 0 more popular than 23 with todays youth.
31 teams also had a number 23 represented so, it was a tie, & my point was made.
In any event, three years prior, NOBODY in the tourney wore the number but there were two 00’s…
So you all do the math.
I can think of several players in the NBA now, most of them in their first few seasons, wearing 0!
Brook’s in Houston…
Teague…
Westbrook…

Comment from wizards_fusion
Time November 3, 2009 at 2:52 PM

if you want to get philosophical, the number 0 is indivisible. therefore, having arenas on “team brotherhood” makes more sense than the other cats since you dont want to divide a team.

however, because selling shoes is THE NOW, arenas and tmac have been replaced with derrick rose and billups.

Go Wizards!
I’d like to see Oberto and Miller take charges from Lebron to get him into foul trouble early. However, being realistic about referees and home court advantage, it will most likely turn out that our guys will be called for blocking instead.

Comment from AUNDRA
Time November 3, 2009 at 4:06 PM

Lets not talk contracts any more but lets talk the tasks at hand. We “Wizards”have the most difficult schedule these next 38 games because the league gave us no nights off at all! We have to stay focused and if we win the money will most definitely come. If and when Critt and James do play I hope they tear it up because it’s real for them and they have a whole lot to prove to themselves there family and everyone else! I just hope we can keep our emotions in check and play with fierce efficiency and smarts with no hidden agendas!
Good Luck and happy “Crab Dribbling”.

Comment from Rick
Time November 3, 2009 at 4:06 PM

with respect to foye’s contract, it definitely makes sense to wait. the better he plays, the more shots he takes, the less of a backup to arenas he becomes and the higher his trade value rises.

Comment from DCColHghts
Time November 3, 2009 at 4:11 PM

What does everybody think of the defense? I see more helping and I even see Gil0 closing out and getting up on the ball handler’…..think it’s coming along? I’m hope they keep getting better…no matter what the cost is in the short term….remember Clevelaned 2 years back when they really implemented some defense? The Wiz don’t have a 1/2 season to get the defense installed.

For tonight’s game..I’d like to see the defense come out and Haywood get some work done on Shaq.

guys, sorry we shot it poor however due to the fouls, it slowed the game down for the Cavs and got the Wizards in the penalty early. Again that is the reason for the poor play in the 2nd, the momentum we had hate to keep saying it, was taken away.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 3, 2009 at 9:27 PM

AB has to play smart and move his feet on D, Brendan has to stay out of foul trouble, and we have a W…as a matter of fact, all big men should not reach and get fouls, or get silly fouls. that will lessen the impact of questionable fouls.

I guess some things will never change. The refs get the Cavs back in the game and there’s still no TEAM in CARON. He’s a nice offensive player, but…once he gets the ball the offense stops. The only time he’l pass is if it might result in a highlight play. His defense is non-existent.

@dcbutler you are like family too me, so I agree we need to run, so I ask what would stop us from running? Foul trouble, our break depends on our bigs getting rebounds and challenging shots, all of our bigs are in foul trouble, and that is where the Wizards have an advantage over the Cavs. The age of Shaq and Z, cannot defend McGee, Blatche, Haywood, so how do you take away our advantage…FOULS….and putting the Cavs on the line, and they get back into the game, with no time off the clock.

What ever happened to the real tight high screen that we use to run with Gil? Thats the one thing I miss from EJ. Im talking about when Gil comes around Wood or the other big as close as possible and then he’s one on one with the big. We never do that now. Everytime we run the high screen or the pick & roll with Gil its always a slow one and Gil goes more sideways than he does attacking the basket. Its like we just play for Gil to make the pass instead of the hard attack to the basket. Thats the way Wade kills teams and thats what Gil use to do but we never run it like that anymore. That use to be our #1 play and its pretty much a sure thing but now we dont use it. I dont get it. I guess thats just Flips system. That play isnt meant for Gil to attack it quick & hard anymore. Its meant moreso just to see what the D will do and then we counter off it with a pass back or a J or a one on one drive but now its still with the guard instead of the big like it use to be

We just might be better of with Butler coming off the bench for brief spurts. He is a great scorer and could add immediate punch to the offense, but he is simply not a team player. Once he touches the ball the game slows down until he shoots. It’s the same as last year with him. Our tempo is non-existemt with Caron in the game. AJ was that way also last year. If AJ comes back in the same mode, I’d sit him down too. CB doesn’t play defense worth a damn either. His man is constantly getting by him forcing the big men in the back to cover for him and they commit unnecessary fouls. Those fouls took our big guys out of the game and completely changed the outcome. Thank you CB.

I’m a little tired of the “I’m a captain, I have to lead.” bs that CB spouts at every chance. If he’s going to lead, he’s going to have to do more than just score. He’s going to have to become a part of the team. Actually, we don’t need him to lead; we need him to follow…follow the instructions of the coaching staff and the game plan. There is no chance at all that Coach Saunder’s game plan in any way includes any play that says “get the ball to Caron and wait for him to shoot.” Come on CB, get on the TEAM bus or get under it.

Folks, you are over-estimating Oberto’s contributions to this team. He can’t consistently defend the bigger centers in the post, and he’s non-existent as a scorer. He is, at best, a 8-10 minute per game substitute.

Comment from dlts20
Time November 3, 2009 at 11:08 PM

Im Not Tripping Over Anything…..

until AJ comes back. I just cant get upset by losing to good teams on the road without a key guy espicaly when his replacment is so different. The Hawks & the Cavs can put on the clamps so we are going to be inconsistent on O when you start guys like Wood, Oberto, and Miller. Teams dont guard Oberto it allows them to really key on Gil and trap him. With AJ back all that changes. Its not just adding a scorer but its adding a big time scorer. I also keep telling people that when AJ comes back we are really adding 2 new guys because Miller is going to look so different with AJ out there. Miller is going to then be open all the time so he can hit J after J or drive when people run out at him. Then when he does drive he can then kick it to all scorers. As of now he almost kicks it to Oberto every time because the D isnt guarding him and Oberto wont shoot it. Or he kicks it to Wood.

Everything will look so different by the addition of AJ. As Ive said before, it still wouldnt be a big change now if Flip started Blatche because he gives us some things similar to what AJ does but Flip starts Oberto so it throws things off with Oberto & Wood up front. The bottom line is when AJ comes back then the O will be unstoppable and every guy will be producing. It will totally change the way teams guard Gil. No more will they be able to trap him off the screens or they will be lit up. People keep thinking that with AJ out Miller will or has to be more offensive but thats actually backwards. He will be more Offensive when AJ is there and he is then open alot more or has all scorers to drive & pass to

I’ve been out of town and missed the conversation for a while. Got back for tonight’s game, however.

gabbo, I mostly agree with you, but I still think CB and AJ are our best forwards and should start. But Blatche may change my mind with time.

I wasn’t receiving the sound tonight for some reason. I could actually concentrate better on what our guys were doing.

Haywood plays really good D, and is probably better on the offensive end than he has ever been.

We did well the first part of the game when we were penetrating and getting the ball inside. Then we started relying on one-on-one jump shots (too many of them early in the shot clock) with predictable results.

Arenas just doesn’t hustle on defense. There’s no other way to say it. As quick as he can be on offense, his man shouldn’t get around him easily. And he should sprint, rather than trot, to pick up his man. Foye does a much better job. I presume he will get the $4.8M qualifying offer at the end of the year that will allow us to match any other offer.

Given that O’Neal has the worst free throw form in the league, Oberto may be second. Both push the ball up there, with no spin at all. I don’t understand why the coaches don’t teach them better form.

Tom, you say we didn’t pick up the option on Crittenton. Did we pick up those on Young and McGee?

Did we give Paul Davis a contract? Non-guaranteed?

Miller is our best shooter. I wish he wouldn’t pass up so many shots.

For the first time I got the feeling that it really is true that the stars get preferential treatment. Any incidental contact on James or Arenas is called.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time November 3, 2009 at 11:15 PM

@Neal – I don’t want ‘Dray to start. I want CB and AJ (when he returns) to play team ball. I saw no evidense of that last year, but then they ran the team in the absence of a real coach. Couldn’t agree more about Arenas and his lack of defensive hustle.

@dlts20 – I like your analysis about Gil getting better looks with AJ in the game, but I still like’Dray coming off the bench until AJ returns.

man there is a lot of talk here about how bad the refs were. what about the 1st qtr? were the refs good then?

the cavs got called for 25 fouls and we got called for 27. i’m not saying that every call was good, and that calls were not missed, but we did not lose this game because of the refs.

i agree that Caron needs to cut out the one-on-one, haywood needs to kick the ball out to wide open perimeter players when the D collapses inside, and Arenas needs to play better perimeter defense, and pretty much every other criticism on here.

However, all in all, it could have been worse. Playing the Cavs on their home court without Antawn and showing signs of dominance in the 1st qtr are good things to take away.

It’s a long season, but so far it seems like the games when Blatche plays well, we win.

Oberto will get more layups than all of our big men….he knows how to set the pick up top and then roll to the basket, rather than run out for a jumper, he also knows basic fundamentals better than our big men, and probably has better hands. With his experience, and if our bigs watch him, that will pay HUGE dividends. while he may only be worthy of spot duty, our bigs could add wealth to their careers if some of his skills were incorporated in theirs. To sum it up, Oberto does things that are taken for granted or overlooked.

We played horriby against Shaq tonight and it cost us. We allowed him to dominate the paint and get our bigs into foul trouble by the middle of the 2nd quarter. Swiping at the ball while in Shaq’s hands will get you a foul no matter how legitimate the ’swipe” is.

We have shot the ball well until tonigt. Too much pressure playing the Lebron’s? I’d really hate to think that.

Lebron is Lebron and he IS going to get every call. We know that going in. Gilbert not being Gilbert tonight cost us as well.

I hope Flip has a better game plan for Dwade and his motly cast of characters that are setting the BB world on fire.

A wise man once said (taken from msn.com)

They slowed the game down and pounded the ball inside to their big man, forcing JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche and Brendan Haywood to hack or pay. McGee picked up four fouls in less than 10 minutes.

Haywood felt O’Neal was getting too many calls.

“In the first half we had 12 fouls on our bigs alone,” Haywood said. “You read in between the lines all you want to. It definitely took away our aggressiveness. No one could be aggressive as they wanted to because you knew you were strapped with fouls.”

I thought Haywood did well against Shaq. Blatche and McGee looked hopeless.

That one play when Haywood was going for a basket and Shaq had his hand shoving and another Cavs player hit him in the head but the refs called in offensive foul…The Cavs mainly L James complained almost the entire game on each call that went against him. Even the obvious calls were seen as a bust. That got the refs to start blowing their whistles in favor of the Cavs…

Fans always think their team doesn’t get calls from the refs. In fact, we went to the line 41 times last night to only 27 times by the Cavs.

We also outrebounded them. On the other hand, if you consider the composite stat of rebounds plus steals minus turnovers, they had the edge by 3. Still fairly even.

We lost because we couldn’t hit the 3 and we couldn’t defend the 3.

Mike Miller needs to shoot more; I don’t get why the offense isn’t providing him w/ more opportunities — and I don’t know why he isn’t more opportunistic when the offense breaks down. A number of times I thought he passed to guys with tougher shots (who then took them and missed).

We’re still looking like a good team — I thought the first quarter was the best I’ve ever seen a Wizards team play.

I agree with your points, Tom, except I’m not sure how really good we’re looking. After the first 10 minutes we looked too much like the jump shooting Wiz we’ve been for so long.

I did see fewer open jump shots by the enemy, however.
