Game Day Nets

9:18 AM…Dave Johnson checking in….ready to move on to tonight…there will be an audio report on the BLOG with some of last night’s highlights..but overall it was not a good night…we have to cross our fingers about Caron Butler suffered a bruised left knee diving for a loose ball in the second quarter…aside from that there was not a lot of flow to last night’s game…consider that the Hawks won the game but shot 28% in the 3rd quarter and 36% in the 4rth quarter and only 41% for the game,…..the Wizards stayed in it long enough to win it but just did not have good possessions when they needed them most… on to tonight…BLOGCAST starts at 7…radio and blogging together….remember our new flagship 106.7 FM and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link.

6:58 PM…Hey gang ready to go…Caron Butler dayd to day with bruised left knee. Flip Saunders comments minutes away…Foye and Arenas in the back court…Miller and Oberto forwards and Haywood center…NO Devin Harris  groin and ankle injuries… so it is Rafer Alston, Courtney Lee..Lopez cneter  diuglass roberts and yi the forwrds

Well, gotta live on. Hope Caron isn’t hurt too badly. Defence was good looking at the stats, and Javale did good?

Home opener, STAND UP DC!

Cmon Gilbert, show your homecrowd why you’re worth 111$mil!

cheers

Some good performances last night, despite the loss, and some *horrible* performances as well. Frankly, if Caron hadn’t gotten hurt, and if we’d played JaVale 20 minutes instead of 10 we probably would have fun.

Gil was just *awful.* Not only 7 turnovers, but a zillion “blocks” (ball knocked out of his hands) when he drove wildly to the hole.

Nick too was just horrible. If Caron had been there to play his minutes, it’s a win.

Randy is a streaky player, and he wasn’t on last night.

Because of our bad play, in effect the Hawks had many more possessions than we did. Hard to win those kinds of games.

Lets go Wizards, its always tough to play without two of your top three scorers but we might have to do it. Lets beat the nets.

when will we know Caron Butler’s status for tonight’s game? i hope it is before 5 pm today because i’m leaving the house for verizon center.

i fully expect the NETS to shoot 30+ 3s tonight. that’s how most teams play on the 2nd night of a back-to-back against the Wiz.

Comment from Mr. Know it All
Time October 31, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Hey fellow Wiz fans, This is my first blog of the 2009-2010 season. I was using the name zbp18 but, my new name is Mr. Know it All (for obvious reasons……lol.) We played great in Dallas but last night against the Hawks we really looked out of sink. We had a good stretch in the 1qt but after that it was pretty much down hill. I think everything starts & ends w/ Gil so if Gil is playing well, the rest of the team usually is too! Gil has to make sure that he gets everyone involved. Like against Dallas the norm should be the 9 assist, Not the 29 pts. I just felt like he got caught-up in trying to score rather than distribute & pick his spots. I’d like to see more Gil & Foye in the back court together. It kind of reminds me of the Gil/Hughes combo. (I even think they could be as good as Isiah/ Dumars !?!?!) Well maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but if Gil realizes when he’s primarily at the 1, he needs to distribute & when Foye comes into the game it frees him up to score a little more, then it makes us a tougher team to beat ! With all the offensive weapons we have (Caron, Miller, Foye, Blatch, Nick, & at times Bwood, Magee, Dsteve, Mjames…. of course Tawn when he gets back) it’s just crazy not to get them involved. Tonight is our home opener & I look for us to get back on track against the Nets, maybe no Caron tonight so everybody has to pick-up the slack. If we play good D, rebound & share the ball we should get this one……… Gooooo Wiz!

I remember last year when I went to the game against the nets in february and when I got to the game I found out Caron was out with the flu.

Comment from maggicman11
Time October 31, 2009 at 11:26 AM

I really hope Andray gets the start tonight with Haywood. The more he plays and teams notice how effective he is it will open things up for other guys. Not to mention Mcgee looked really good coming off the bench for a change of pace big man. he seems to be very effective against the more athletic bigs that are too quick for brenden.

Comment from Rick
Time October 31, 2009 at 12:20 PM

the first qtr looked good, we were moving the ball and knocking down shots. but then when the hawks started on a roll it seemed like we reverted to a more selfish brand of basketball. perhaps that was because Miller and Oberto both went to the bench with foul trouble, but it was disappointing to see.

Gilbert was mishandling the ball, alot. Foye really cannot play the point yet. He does remind me of Larry Hughes in the way he looks for his own shot first. Haywood seems completely incapable of making a pass once he receives the ball and someone is guarding him. Nick Young, well, we know he is in there to shoot, but every time you touch the ball Nick?

The one encouraging thing to me, is that with everything that went wrong (LOSING CARON!), it wasn’t a completely one-sided game. We were still challenging (down by 9 albeit) in the 4th and the Hawks never cleared their bench.

Gilbert showed a lot more rust last night than in Dallas. And he also only got to the line 6 times. To me that means he was settling too much for the jumper.

I hope they come out strong on defense tonight and play as a team. If so, watch out Nets.

Comment from dlts20
Time October 31, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Rick, Gil didnt settle at all last night. He attacked alot but the refs never gave him any calls and the other times he would lose the dribble. Just a little rust. I think we willsee NY start tonight if Caron doesnt go.

Im actually not upset too much right now. Just let Caron & AJ sit out and get healthy why we give the young guys some run and a chance to play with Gil. We should be ok

Comment from JC
Time October 31, 2009 at 12:37 PM

We not only couldn’t get a call to go our way, but also we couldn’t get many free throws to go either. 63% from the charity strip. When u add that with no Caron it is hard to win. I have to say though the Hawks played much better defense than i thought they could.

Comment from dlts20
Time October 31, 2009 at 1:02 PM

I was on the Hawks board before the game and they said that they expected to play good D against us. They said last season at home when they played a scrub team they always had to outscore them. Like the scrub teams would put up 110 every time but when they played a top notch team, the Hawks D always showed up and held them to the 80’s in alot of games.

Comment from DCWIZGvP
Time October 31, 2009 at 1:23 PM

Rick made some great points about Young. He jacked up 8 jump shots in 12 minutes last night, made none of them, and didn’t once try to penetrate the lane and get some free throws to find his rhythm.

They say Javaris Crittenton won’t be back now until December, so with all of the guards Washington started with they are going to need to think about Mike James. I thought it was risky for Flip to trust Young in the second half, however, I’m not sure Washington had a great chance to beat Atlanta without two of their three captains in the game.

I’m excited for the home opener regardless. Could this be the first time we get to see an Arenas dunk? I’ll be there in the stands with my dad and hope for a great game :) .

Comment from Jaba
Time October 31, 2009 at 1:39 PM

Seemed to me like Mike Miller was looking for the extra pass a bit too often in the last two games. Don’t get me wrong, I love his unselfishness but we definitely needed some of hjis 3s yesterday and he simply didn’t take them. We need his scoring tonight, especially if Caron isn’t playing.

One more thought: A game like yesterdays is humbling, and there are lessons to be learned from this. We’ve got a great team and I’m sure each and every player will do their best to not let something like this happen again. Let’s see what’ll happen tonight! With or without Caron, we can win this! GO WIZARDS!!

Comment from JC
Time October 31, 2009 at 1:52 PM

Well if they play defense like that most of the season it will be hard for us to finish ahead of them by year’s end. I gotta think we can beat them most of the time when we are fully healthy, but it wouldn’t be a given. There is a good chance we face Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs. If they finish 4 and 5 like a lot of people are saying that would be a good series. We got a ways to go though.

Comment from TAG FLIP
Time October 31, 2009 at 1:54 PM

The game last night against Atlanta was about aggressiveness, or lack thereof.. after we went up 10 in the first quarter, it’s like we stopped playing. I’m not sure if losing Caron had anything to do with that, but like Flip said in one of his post-game interviews, “they sustained our punch, we didn’t sustain theirs.”

maggicman11 – You really think starting Blatche over Oberto would be a good idea? Sure, dray didn’t exactly have the numbers in Atlanta as he did in Dallas, but he still played solid, scoring in double figures. Blatche is already going to be coming off the bench once Jamison gets back. Oberto doesn’t have the numbers that jamison has, but he does almost all the intangibles like Michael Ruffin did, playing the solid D on opposing teams’ bigs like a Dirk nowitzki. But we’ll see come tonight.

And hopefully Caron will be healthy… we can’t afford to lose him right now

DC STAND UP!!!!

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense

@Rick – I agree, when Miller and Oberto both went to the bench with foul trouble our defense went with them. Both of those guys know how to play perimeter defense and still get back to plug the lanes. The key is that they don’t stand still. They are always looking around and always moving their feet.

Put last night behind us and go for W #2 tonight.

Go Wiz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment from Babakism
Time October 31, 2009 at 3:30 PM

Dray will continue to come off the bench, however he will play more minutes than Oberto. They just want him to get used to his role.

Gil was a little eratic but we also couldn’t get a foul call driving to the basket to save our life. Did you see that pathetic charge call?!?!?!?!?!?!? No Love.

If Caron doesn’t play Mike Miller needs to understand he will have to look to take a few more shots. It’s great he is an unselfish team player but last night we needed him to step up and take a few more shots.

LOL @ GABBO’s costume = Ed Tapscott

I tried to find a last minute costume for cheap but it didn’t happen. I was going to dress up as a gigantic crab, with a crown on my head, and a LeBron jersey in the front (wearing it like a bib) and dribbling a basketball.

As you guessed, I was going to go as “Crab Dribble”. I thought my chances of winning season tickets would be pretty good; however, the crab costume was too much. Ah, maybe next season.

I disagree with you guys about the D. I thought our D was good for the most part and great sometimes. All our stats were basicaly even except for rebounding, turnovers, and fouls. We held them to a low percentage and you have to think about the fact of our turnovers. They got alot of easy baskets off our turnovers. Thats not really Defense but Offense. If they had to score out of a normal set all night, they were having problems but when we turned it over then they were off & running for easy baskets.

I also disagree about NY. He sucked without a doubt but you can tell that he’s trying to find himself and Ill say it again, all of those young guys will look 10x better with Gil on the floor. I bet if NY starts tonight in place of Caron, that he plays well

Comment from dlts20

I just found out this on a Nets board. Looks like Harris may be out which is great for us, espicaly if Caron is sitting.

NJ Nets: Devin Harris likely to sit out tonight at Washington
By Dave D’Alessandro/The Star-Ledger
October 31, 2009, 3:24PM

Well, this came out of nowhere.

Devin Harris is a likely scratch tonight against the Wiz, and it’s the same issue: The strained groin tightened up on him after Friday night’s game. As of now, he’s not comfortable going from east to west, so they’ll probably have to put him on ice for at least a few days.

Monday’s game at Charlotte is also up in the air, but Lawrence Frank admits it’s not looking promising.

So they’re back to Plan B, with Rafer Alston starting against Gilbert Arenas, and Terrence Williams spelling Rafer at the point. The Wizards, of course, are without Antawn Jamison, and Caron Butler suffered a knee bruise at Atlanta Friday, so he’s also probably out

I”m still waiting on the breakout of Nick Young . If Hollywood starts to go 24/7 like Dre then we will definitely have the most explosive bench in the NBA. I know he can shoot the three but he needs to be more confident in his moving inside for dunks and reverse dunks and his mid-range to be Zero #2. I see the expression from him on the bench and the SMILE is definitely not there because he wants to show his talent. I’m looking at this guard from New Jersey Chris Douglas Roberts, all I see is upside for this explosive scorer!
I hope I can see the same from Nick real soon!

That was an excellently conceived and well played game by the Wizards. It was the best defensive effort that I have seen from a Wizards team in many, many years. DeShawn and Randy (and Slick in the limited time he played) played the perimeter Nets players very, very tough. Miller, Oberto and Blatche created havoc by blocking just about every area that the Nets tried to attack. Sure we had some breakdowns, but no one expected a shutout.

Gil is getting back to the Gil of three years ago. The toughness and quickness are there; the ball-handling is getting there. When he’s on, the Wiz win.

So far ‘Dray has been successful because he understands what is expected of him, both on defense and offense. On offense his job is to run a pick and roll or a pick and step back with the ball handler. ‘Dray has been successful thus far because his shot is falling on the step back. If the shot doesn’t fall, everyone will overlook his other contributions and go back to being critics again. He is also being successful when he gets a one-on-one with the ball in the low post because he is taking his time and not forcing the shot. Most importantly, he finally has a real coach who is putting him in a position in which he can be successful…a coach who is telling him where to be on offense and where to be on defense, and ‘Dray is executing. I’m really happy for him.

It’s early, but I like what I see so far. Two thumbs up for ‘Dray tonight.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time November 1, 2009 at 12:32 AM

Two thumbs up for Andre “for the season” so far. We wanted consistency from him and so far he is delevering just that. What a great all around game from him tonight. His best scoring game ever. He is playing really well on both sides of the ball too.

Gilbert Arenas scores 32 points on 9 of 13 shooting. How efficient is THAT? All I can say to that is WOW. How good a handle do you have to have to make guys foul you so often when you aren’t shooting? I’d say he’s back :)

I’ve noticed Nick’s defensive positioning becoming a lot better too Gabbo. Deshawn and Randy really do play very good on the ball defense. We have needed that for so long. With Miller turning out to be the “rebound king” that draft night trade is starting to look more like genius than just good.

Flip for President! We never played defense before? This guy gets here and over the summer he gets us playing better defense than most of us can remember. If we play like we play like we played tonight Tuesdays game against the Cavs is going to be “special”.

a big thanks to the METRO system for causing unnecessary meltdowns on a busy night with increased ridership to have track repairs and service delays. cant this wait until tomorrow? people were jammed at metro center red line westbound and orange line westbound after the game.

im done being frustrated. onto the game ->

everyone praised the heck out of blatche so i won’t go there. instead, im going to talk about mike miller. mike’s been the Wiz’s glue guy the last 3 games and i think this is his role on the team. i know that jeffmalone and i were pretty hard on miller last game for being passive in the scoring department. however, when you look at the box score from the last 3 games, mike’s been doing everything else but score. typically, this role was reserved for dom (last season) and butler (before he became an all-star; which usually means you gotta get points night in and night out).

mike’s been an unsung hero in my opinion. he’s not the most athletic guy out there and his age is starting to show. but, he’s still got a needed skill (3pt shooting) and his size allow him to get rebounds in the painted area.

it seems like the only way mcgee is going to score is via alley-oops. eventually teams are going to figure it out and deny him the ball – even in mid-air (lebron did alley-oops all the time and he tries to do it at least once a game to let the crowd know he’s the alpha player in the world. but for most that watch him often, you know it is coming. there is no uncertainty – and it is harder to sell for most other players). jason kidd is one of the best alley-oop lobbers i’ve ever seen (nash is pretty good too, but not as great as kidd) and the reasons why are (1) pinpoint accurate and (2) the defense has no clue it is coming.

what i’m trying to say is that the team should cut down on alley-oops to mcgee so that the opposition can’t just wait for it and defend it. there needs to be some sense of spontaneity.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time November 1, 2009 at 12:46 AM

One more thing I forgot about Flip. A lot of us have wanted a coach that can really regulate the players minutes. We have been tired of the big 3 getting 40 or 40+ a night. Well …. with two of the big 3 hurt Gilbert didn’t play close to 40. It’s a little nuance but I really like this Flip guy.

“At least you were coming home from a great win instead of being frustrated and P…ed off LOL”

man, if i got a nickel for every shocking Wiz ending, i would have at least $2 by now. some highlights that made me cry on the METRO were

1) ruffin tossing the ball into the air and mo pete drains an unfathomable 3 and the raptors won in OT

2) vince carter’s “sticky ball 3″ (when the NBA decided to save money by using synthetic balls instead of killing cows for 100% leather) to tie the game and the nets eventually won in OT

3) steve francis (as a knick) draining a game-winning 3 and jumping onto the wiz’s scoring table to loud sounds of shock (i.e., how did the wiz lose to the bad bad bad knicks)

4) damon jones’ series winning 3 for the Cavs. a sad end for the wiz which resulted in the exponetial rise of lebron.

5) the wiz beatdown by portland at verizon center after gil vowed to score 100 on nate mcmillan’s team due to being left off of team usa. the game wasn’t even close.

6) dwade single-handedly sweeping the wiz by himself in round 2 of 2004 playoffs after washington finally won a series in 23 years by taking down the bulls in 6

7) mo williams (bucks) beating arenas on the final possession to win the game for the bucks (again, a bad team beating a playoff-bound team)

speaking of no-look, what about oberto’s between his legs bounce passes? he’s such a good passer for being a big man.

Comment from TAG FLIP

Got a chance to see the game after its conclusion on my DVR (again), unfortunately with the disappointment of already knowing the outcome. What a solid offensive performance, and Blatche surprised me when I saw he went for 30.

Another thing I liked was the way we got McGee involved in the offense. Sure, we could use him in a larger dimension than just the alley-oop lob (”JaVale Cam” anyone?) but if McGee can develop into a solid defender who can do more than contribute 2-3 blocks per night then we will have some real depth.

Emotions, emotional , emotionless; all three could possibly play a factor against our most Heated Rival in the Cleveland Cavaliers but we must not let the emotions run too high or too low. The emotions could run high initially if the refs don’t call it fairly but it’s Cleveland so expect it! The emotional could definitely be a factor if we get a big lead but don’t fall for the trip because that has happened before! We had 10 point leads only to succumb to defeat in the end so be consistent with your shots and cover the baseline before LeBrain toe dances to the bucket for a dunk! The emotionless is something that can happen if we handle our business like businessmen we are and just be efficient and deadly with no hoplaa!

Whats your take on the team so far. We had some good, some bad and some ugly. Lets start off with the good, hence the overall energy of the team is good which means everyone is in great shape. Secondly the guards are our strength because each one brings explosive scoring and smart defensive awareness.Thirdly we have one player Breakng Out this year and with that I will say it’s a Happy Dre Day! The bad has to be some of our key members off the bench hasn’t exploded like I want to see and that has me wondering if they will be a nonconsistent and possibly trade bait down the line.

From John Mitchell’s post on NBA.com

Second-year New Jersey guard Chris Douglas-Roberts led the Nets with a career-high 25 points. This marked the first time he has seen Arenas playing at or near what is considered to be peak form.

Consider him impressed.

“From what I’ve heard from people around the league he is better now than he was before the injury,” said Roberts, who was 7-of-12 from the field. “He creates so many problems. When he comes down and the ball is in his hands you don’t even know what set you need to be in because you don’t know what he’ll do. You don’t know if he is going to take you off the dribble, pass the ball or go to the basket. He is a nightmare to defend.”

I think if Haywood continues with these numbers, he could possibly earn himself a spot on the All-Star team this season! The only concern I have about the Wizards is they have not been challenging shots as much…..I’ve been noticing on the help defense all they do is run up towards the player and put the hand up when the opponent puts the shot up, but it doesn’t really seem like the Wizards are contesting the shots…….this could be a concern against Cleveland.
