Game Day Atlanta
5:35 AM EDT…Dave Johnson here in Atlanta and ready to take over the city. Thanks to the kindness of CSN play-by-play announcer Steve Buckhantz and Bruce Levensonone of the Atlanta Thrashers /Hawks owners, I enjoyed the Capitals 4-3 win last night at Phillps Arena..keep an eye on thisOvechkin guy….and keep an eye on the Wizards. There is no claim that one win makes a season but the win over the Mavericks has set the bar for how Flip Saunders wants his team to compete and especially on the road. As we have discussed the 102-91 win against Dallas was just a well managed game and the Wizards did not panic when the Mavericks tightened things up and made it a one point game. The Wizards truly valued their possessions. Randy Foye really enjoyed playing along side Gilbert Arenas and he noted that the two are already building a chemistry that is leading to open shots. Foye also says he appreciates the play calling of Flip Saunders. Foye told me at times he has had trouble getting the coach’s attention because he thinks Saunders is “playing chess in his head” and trying to work out the best match-ups.BLOGCAST starts at 7:30—you regulars know it is LIVE radio and blogging—it is our way to get you connected right to the game–we had over 500 posts Tuesday. I look forward to another busy night….remember on radio our new home if 106.7 FM in Washington and we will provide a LISTEN LIVE link…we also have a network of stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….fun starts at 7:30
6:41 PM Dave and Glenn…checking in from Phillips Arena….it seems most of you have seen the news that the Wizards did pick up the options on Nick Young and Domenic McGuire’s contracts…the deadline to pick up those options is October 31st (actually Monday this year since the 31st falls on a Saturday) and that’s why there was a flurry of activity today….broadcast starts with Flip Saunders at 7:30

If you look at the scoreboard from Atlanta’s home opener against the Pacers, which the Hawks won 120-109, you’ll see that Indiana turned it over 26 times and had only 1 steal. They did *everything else* better than the Hawks.
If we play defense and take care of the ball tonight, we’ll get a win. That will be the key.
Comment from Jaba

Defense and taking care of the ball are not Nick Young’s biggest stengths,
so we might just see another DNP behind his name in tomorrow’s box score.
I sure hope Nick will be able to grasp quickly whatever Flip is asking of him! I definetly want to see the guy work his way back into the rotation.

yup i watched the game and the pacers were hanging with the hawks. then it seemed like everyplay in the fourth the pacers kept turning it over.
this is going to be a good southeast division battle. we need to get this win.
Lets go Wizards!!!! i cant wait to go to the home opener tomorrow!

If we can continue to play defense the way we did against Dallas this should be a very good game. This one could be JaVale’s moment to shine a little given the atheleticism of their front line. We will need a great game from our bigs…. we need our guards to play tough perimeter defense…. and we need to protect the ball. This one should be fun to watch.
Go Wizards

Nick Young defense has picked up a little, don’t judge him too hard on that foul against Phil in the closing seconds of the preseason game . I want to see Nick be more of a catch and shoot player, like he was in the summer league. That way he wouldn’t be a turn over king.
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time October 30, 2009 at 12:22 PM
Nick is so atheletic and so talented. I don’t think his basketball IQ is where it needs to be though. I was hoping Flip could get his head into the other aspects of the game, but, so far all I’ve seen is the shooting. I agree Millie Mill he is starting to move his feet a little better on defense. Let’s hope that is the first step in the development of the other aspects of his game. If he works on his overall game he could be a “great” player.

I think the biggest thing is intensity. The wizards can’t get complacent after one good win. They need to come out with the same energy, focus, and determination that they had against Dalls. They NEED this win to set the tone for the rest of the season…one win won’t do that, but two road wins in a row might. It’s a divisional game, against a team that a lot of people think will finish above the Wizards. They need this to prove to themselves and everyone else that they have what it takes.

If I’m not mistaken our longest winning streak last season was two games.
It’s the second game now and we could already match that record!

Tonight Gilbert will also match his total for games played from last year. Tonight’s game is going to be tough because of the athletism of the hawks, we should use Dom, Slick, adn the Javale because of that factor.

@Jeff Malone I HATE MEL PROCTER!!! HE WAS THE WORST!!! LOL
He was the master of jynxing us on free throws.
One time when I was a like 12 years old my brother got home from work @ like 1am and I was asleep. He decided to watch the replay of a Bullets game. During the game Mel Procter did his trademark, “Haywood Workman has made 10 consecutive freethrows” and of course he missed the next one. My brother told me that in my sleep I screamed out “Fing AHOLE” when he missed the freethrow lol I think Mel Procter still does Padres games

Andray earned himself a starting spot with his performance against the mavs. not just with scoring and rebounding but with the job he did defending Dirk. I thought that would have been his weakness coming into the game but he proved me wrong. He did a better job than Oberto did. hopefully he can keep it up tonight because with AJ out we will need his low post scoring and size especially against athletic forwards like Atlanta has.

The best players that give u the best shot at winning need to play. andray showed last year, against the mavs, thru the preseason, and in the summer league (if you count that) that he is the second best option at PF we have after AJ. The only aspect that Oberto has over Andray is court vision and passing. that comes with basketball IQ which comes with experience which as a coach u want to get Andray a lot of. Javale would be a nice change of pace big man for a punch off the bench. Andray needs to start and finish games untill AJ comes back.

Should be a great game but I hope alot of people dont think we suck if we lose. Listening to Flip, he basicaly hinted that McGee could be used more in this game because of his athletic ability. I also wouldnt be shocked if he started Blatche this game but he will probably still go with Oberto but pull him early if the matchup is bad. The key matchup this game for me is Horford vs Wood. Wood has the big height & size advantage but Al has the quickness and likes to shoot the J’s where Wood doesnt like to come out that far.
Someone on here talked about Smith not having to guard AJ but Smith is usually matched up on Butler and Williams is matched up on AJ. Butler also usually goes off against the Hawks so I would expect him to respond. Im also not 100% sold on Gil like everyone else is. By that I just mean that I dont want to put any undo pressure on him where people expect him to get 30 & 10 every game. I think he very well could but you cant say that after just 1 game yet. He’s still been off for 2 years. Should be fun and I hope we show up. I would love to see more of the Gil-Foye backcourt and I would love to see Blatche & McGee on the court with Gil as much as possible.
Miller vs Johnson should also be fun matchup although alot of the Hawks fans are saying they could switch Johnson onto Gil and let Bibby guard the 2. I would love that. Joe maybe good but he’s still far too tall to guard Gil and I think Miller is too big for Bibby to stop

andray blatche = sixth man of the year
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 30, 2009 at 2:33 PM
Rick — Blatche was sixth man of *one game*. Lets not put too much pressure on this young man, ok?
Andray got *lots* more minutes than Oberto in Dallas, and I suppose he will again. Doesn’t mean he needs to start (or finish); all the minutes are the same.

Tom, right you are.
On another note: I read that Crittenton will be out longer than first expected!
In my opinion by that time, we’ll probably have our rotation all set. It was hard
to imagine Javaris carving out significant minutes before training camp opened,
the chances for him to come back and contribute seem even smaller now.

well looks like i have to disagree with a few bloggers on here. To me Andray has shown that he deserves the #2 PF spot throughout the entire offseason. yes, he has only had 1 game to show what he can do in regular season action, but his wok ethic over the summer as well as his change of attitude to get more focus has shown up in summer camp (i live in richmond and went to vcu) and preseason. Andray is a better player overall than Oberto and I like to see the best players play.. call me crazy but that seems like a stragedy that makes teams better.

Greetings to all of my fellow bloggers and bloggets!..lol, and a special shout to Dave, Glenn and Sportzwiz, what a great Friday and Saturday, a back to back for the Wizards
No as for as the Hawks, I believe with the athletic front line of the Hawks we will see McGee get some minutes tonight, and I even believe that DMAC, and yes Slick Nick may get some time. I really think the theme of this years team will not to have a rotation set in stone, however it will be the best match up versus whatever team we are playing that night. With this approach all the the players will buy in and stay game ready! Love the approach, so I will no longer focus on starting line ups…Now maggicman as far as Oberto starting that move was a great move, his defenso on the block was textbook! And he gives us inside toughness and savy veteran play. What makes the team better is the “coach” and the “health” of our team.

maggicman11, there is no shame in being 6th man. Often 6th man is more important than one of the starters. Three good examples are Ginobli, Terry, JR Smith.
Unfortunately coaching isn’t as simple as “play the best men.” A more effective strategy is to play the best match-ups and keep players on the floor that are playing well. Hence why in our first game Mike Miller didn’t get much time at SG as he’s not really agile enough to handle Terry and Barea.

And yes this news made my day as well
Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has exercised their options on both guard Nick Young and center/forward JaVale McGee. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not released.
Comment from GlingGling
Time October 30, 2009 at 6:23 PM
jeffmalone1990, if you look around the league there are a lot of teams picking up options. Probably has something to do with the economy and the options being cheaper than resigning, though that says nothing about the quality of the players.

i dont understand why the club is exercising options on 2 guys that have potential but are nowhere close to saunders’ 8-9 man rotation theory.
i like both guys and want them to stay a Wizard but flip isn’t going anywhere anytime soon – so, what makes us think young and mcgee will get PT later this season or next season or beyond?
economy aside, i never like the idea of having talent rot on the pine (see mcgrady back in 97-98 with toronto).

7:02 PM…starters are in —no surprises
Wizards–Arenas and Miller in the back court….Haywood in the middle…and Butler and Oberto are the forwards
Hawks– Bibby and Joe Johnson in the back court…Horford in the middle and Josh Smith and Marvin Williams are the forwards
Comment from DJ-WizardsRadio
Time October 30, 2009 at 7:07 PM
wizards fusion I think it is important to remember that the 8-9 man roatation is not in concrete…in other words…that 8th or 9th guy could vary from night to night based on matchups and game situations
mcguire could be called on to guard certainly players because he provides match-up challenges…last year he even was used on chris paul
and young can score….but as flip said yesterday after practice with the team’s depth…you have to do more than just make shots

@ DJ
i’m very disappointed that nick and javale wasn’t selected to get meaningful minutes in dallas. i feel the team is good enough that even if nick and javale make mistakes, other guys can cover for them. like most that blog here, we have high expectations of those guys (along with dom and andray). these 4 guys are “home-grown” and fans always want to see home-grown talent develop into good players for the home team and not elsewhere.
to me, flip isn’t joking around and he’s going to go with the veterans first and development guys second. i guess flip is resonating ernie’s voice too after grunfeld made the trade for miller and foye instead of getting rookie prospects like harden, jordan hill, flynn, rubio, and dejuan blair.
the vets on the wiz are pretty awesome right now. i just dont want flip to create such a huge void between the vets and the young guys. once the vets go elsewhere or retire, the void can cause a lot of problems and i’m hoping the team doesn’t get to that point.
but like you said, if young and mcgee shape up and reduce bad habits, they’ll be on the court. they just haven’t earned it yet in flip’s eyes.

Well, I’m at my mother in laws and I *found* CSN. Terrible reception and no sound — which I’m getting by listening live (a little weird, because it’s about 30 seconds behind the live action).
We were ahead when I tuned in, and we’re 5 down w/ 3 minutes left in the half. We’re playing *terribly* and still are within 5. We better tighten up in the 2d half, or we’ll lose. atlanta does not look all that good to me.

Down 14 at the half. Thank you Brendan (no offense, no defense, no head-in-the-game) Haywood. It seems as though the refs were intent on taking Miller and Oberto (our real defense) out of the game early. Gil is totally out of control.
Caron played great defense early. Combined with Miller, he made it work. Blatche is really solid.

Well, while I hoped for an undefeated season, I really didn’t expect one.
Brendan was responsibile for an 8 point turn-around in the 1st quarter (he actually single-handidly turned the game around). I don’t care what his stats were, he was a negative influence on this game. He looked slow, indecisive and sometimes positively lazy…maybe he’s ill.
Miller had a nice all-around game, 10 boards, 5 assists, and 2 steals is a very nice game.. he’s a very heady player.
Blatche was a positive influence again. Nice solid game.
As I implied at the half, Slick and McGuire have no business on an NBA court at this point in their development. They are both talented, but both appear to have no idea what they are supposed to do to make a positive contribution to this team.
Once Coach Saunders gets into McGee’s head how to play this game, McGee will be an All-Star. He has more talent than most other centers in the league. He shows moments of genius and moments of stupidity…Coach will take that and work with it.
Foye was a downer tonight. While he did have 6 assists, he missed very crucial shots. 3-12 is not good shoting for a point guard…and the misses were at key points of the game.
Gil was absolutely terrible. Sure he scored 23 points, but he shot 9-22 and had 7 turnovers. That is a minus 40 in my book. Give him 4 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals and he’s still minus 26 potential points.
While I’m sure he will win many others, tonight point guard lost the game.

A few thoughts…
- The Wiz only played for 2.5 quarters yet still had a chance to make a game of it. They lost their mojo when Deshawn came in for Miller. He didn’t contribute anything tonight.
- The Wiz need more offensive rebounds. Andray has to get in there and help Brendan out. Andray and Brendan should get at least 2 off rebs/game.
- I think it is very good sign that in their first two games the Wiz held their opponents to 39% and 41%. When is the last time that happened?. Tonight they just didn’t execute on offense.

Well we now have one good one and one stinker. The one positive thing I noticed from the “stinker” Chenier Fan did too. The defense in the 1st and last half of the 3rd into the 4th quarters wasn’t too awful bad. Even Nick had a play or two on defense.
Face it guys there are just going to be games where there is Saran Wrap over our basket. No problem. Gil having 7 turnovers is a problem. Foye with all the assists couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn tonight. Miller again played a brilliant game ( I think he was the “only” one though). Andray came close.
I understand Coach Saunders desire to go with a “veteran” down the stetch, but, JaVale was killing them and Brendan for Brendan was having an off night. I would have liked to see JaVale for a “few more minutes” as we were making our run.
Home Opener Tonight. Spooks, Goblins, candy and the Nets… yum yum.
Absolutely no problem Tom. Glad to help where I can
I’m glad/sorry you found CSN on a non HD 13″ er LOL. I hope the older tv faded/fuzzed/snowed out during the “bad times in the game”. LOL

Oh well… it’s the morning afater and we are no longer an undefeated team.
Home opener tonight!!
Andray continues to look like an NBA player — he has really stepped up so far, and I will be *very happy* if this means I get to eat my words about him.
Great to have basketball again, yeah!

Great blogging last night folks, especially my man JM1990…
I’m a week away from being in Europe for a month & will count on checking this blog the day after for game re-caps because of the time difference (you know, checking the flow of the blog during the game to get a feel for how it went).
Anyway, Gil lost this one.
& I do agree that Haywood was a black hole & a bit disruptive early no matter what his stats.
& also yes, Dom & Slick are lost.
We got in foul trouble (Miller, Oberto & Kimbo Slice) very early trying to keep up with ATL’s athletes & it unwound from there.
We woulda stayed outta foul trouble Flip wouldn’t have had to empty the bench so early. Oberto & Miller killed us mid way through the 1st with foul trouble.
Did I mention we got in foul trouble trying to keep up with their athletes?

We will work it all out and be an excellent team. Great learning experience for us early. Keeps us in check & focused (hopefully)…

We should have played Mcgee for a large number of minutes yesterday, he’s the only one on this roster than can out athlete them…

What happened to Caron with layups? He’s missed a million since the start of the Preseason.

The refs are terrible tonight or they’re just calling everything the Cavs way.

Good morning DJ. I am very happy for you because it must make your job more enjoyable to have our squad mostly healthy & improved. This will be a great game for you to analyze. Going to Dallas and winning is a real confidence builder. But it is only temporary if we don’t take that same same energy and determination into Philips Arena. That is why I like the idea of having a coach like Flip.
This will be interesting tonight because we will be facing a young front line in Atlanta. But if we make defense our forte with whoever we play we will have good success.
As mentioned earlier about the possibility of Javale being in the rotation tonight is exciting.
Hopefully Haywood and Javale can help neutralize Horford. AB may get more minutes earlier for Oberto because Josh Smith may prove to be to agile for Oberto. But you never know Oberto may go old school (mind) with Josh and frustrate him some.
This game definitely has the potential to be a highlight reel I hope comes out in the Wiz favor. Hopefully we can keep Bibby and Crawford from having big nights around the perimeter. We can’t gamble and leave them with open shots. Tonight my key is not Gil or the team but how they respond to Flip coaching strategies. He may even give Nick a shot tonight if he has responded well in practice to his role in the lineup.
