Game Day Dallas
5:58 AM EDT….Dave Johnson ready to go….here it is…it all starts for real tonight and with a big test—an improved Dallas Mavericks team…The Wizards did lose to the Mavericks in pre season but as the saying goes–that was pre-season….I thought in that game Fabricio Oberto did a nice job when he was matched up on Dirk Nowitzki…Flip Saunders did not announce a starting lineup for tonight but the last pre season game had Oberto starting for Antawn Jamison and Mike Miller starting at two-guard…..Saunders did talk last week about possibly starting the season with Andray Blatche coming off the bench since that will be his role when Jamison is healthy….. and I look forward to trying to get into regular season BLOG form—-this is the place where to go straight to the source–you are connected court side….BLOGCAST–live radio and blogging–connect with us…..broadcast starts at 8:30 with Flip Saunders pre-game show. There will be a LISTEN LIVE link and on radio our new flagship station is 106.7 FM…..And on our network….in Annapolis 1430 AM…in Baltimore 1370 AM….in Cumberland 1450 AM.. in Lynchburg 1050 AM…in Martinsburg…740 AM…..in Richmond 910 AM...I will check back later….
7:30 PM EDT…Dave and Glenn here at American Airlines Center..one hour from the start of the regular season!!!!!…Wizards starters will be Gilbert Arenas and Mikke Miller in the back court…Caron Butler and Fabricio Oberto are the forwards and Brendan Haywood the starting center……

Hello from Stuttgart/Germany! Let’s get this season started the right way!
It’s going to be tough without AJ, (does Dallas have any health issues?),
but if Andray comes to play, we can do this!
I know I will regret this tomorrow, but I’m going to try to stay up
for this one! GO WIZARDS!!!!!!

this is a tough first game for the wizards. but there are matchup problems either way.
jamison is out, and i believe j-ho is out as well, but not sure. i’d have to get clarification on that one.
dirk poses a big matchup problem for the wizards, but at the same time gil poses a big matchup problem for the mavericks.
i think that oberto should start against dirk, with blatche coming off the bench, and javale or paul davis playing small filler minutes. the wiz could even fit some minutes in for dmac at the 4 if needed.
caron vs marion should be a good matchup, and the bench’s could play a major part in the final outcome. both teams are very deep, so the second quarter and beggining of the fourth will be huge. i think if terry comes off the bench, putting deshawn on him would be a good option.
all in all, just glad the season is finally here, and i’m ready to see this team get right back into the playoffs.

thanks for the news tom;
josh howard being out is a big help for the wizards imo. so that probably means marion will start. depending on how blatche plays, this team could definitely come out with a win tonight.
hopefully oberto will get some playing time (and even the start) tonight, he seems to be a great compliment to the other players. even though i think blatche could do well offensively against dirk, defensively i don’t know if he would do well.

Personaly, the biggest thing to me is Gil. This Dallas team defensively still struggles with that high screen just like it did with Wade in the finals. Who on there back line is going to stop Gil off the high screen when he splits the double? Dirk, Gooden, Dampier, and Humphries? If Gil is aggressive then he can shoot 20ft’s by doing this and could possibly get Dirk in foul trouble which would be huge. I hope he doesnt back down from Kidd like he’s done in the past and just settle for half hearted jumpers all game. If he attacks these boys at full speed then we will be in it and then the pressure falls on them

Another thing is, we keep talking about Wood missing his FT’s and how he needs to get back to how he was a couple of years ago but no one is mentioning his wrist injury. Maybe that has screwed up his FT’s and Jumpers again
Comment from dlts20
Time October 27, 2009 at 1:38 PM
gray, Id rather take my chances with Howard being out also but trutfully, no one in Dallas cares. Pretty much all of there fans think they are better without him and wants him traded. I know they have been dominant this Preseason without him so maybe its true
Comment from gray16
Time October 27, 2009 at 1:40 PM
dlts i think that’s the great part about gil now, he has said he going to attack instead of settling for 3s. and he has shown it in the preseason, and i feel kidd is in for a rough night. kidd can no longer stick with quick guards, so gilbert can pretty easily beat kidd all night long.
as for wood, i think your right that the wrist injury has something to do with it. being out that long with that injury, he probably wasn’t able to practice his ft’s much, and that set him back in his ability. i think the more he is able to practice them, the better he’ll get.

Hey, did any of you catch NBA TV Fantasy Insider last night? Kamla was on there with Dennis Scott again and at the end of the show they had a bold prediction segment. One of Scott’s predictions was that we would be in the ECF. They only got 2 predictions apiece so that was pretty big. I also remember last week when they were doing the Fantasy Guards thing and Kamla had Gil rated as the #2 PG behind Paul, Scott kind of took exception. He was nice and said that he loved Gil but no way should he be ranked that high when he hasnt played in 2 years. Thats why it was shocking for me to hear him give us props like that. It got me hyped

Tonight, Flip is going to show that the Wizards are going to be one of the most exciting teams to watch. “If you don’t score at least 95 points a game against the Wiz you can forget it.”
Caron is going to be able to play the 3 for every minute he is on the floor until Jamison comes back. That’s a great thing.
Comment from Brickjp

Yes! The day is finally here. This is going to be an exciting year for the Wiz. It’s too bad Jamison is out for a while, but we have a ton of weapons right now. I expect Haywood and Blatche to play at a high level. Also excited to see if Miller’s shot is falling. He hit 5-5 from three in a recent preseason game so that’s looking good for us. Hopefully Gil can get to the basket with ease, like he always could. Cant wait for tonight! ZARDS

O.k., Crittenton and AJ can’t play. But who’s the third guy who’s not gonna get dressed? My guess is, it could be Mike James. They’ll might need Paul Davis more

Mavericks preparing for Arenas
Rick Carlisle said today after shootaround that the Mavericks will use different players, and maybe different defenses, to try to contain high-powered Washington guard Gilbert Arenas.
Arenas missed virtually all of last season with a knee injury but has come back this year with renewed vigor. Quinton Ross said he’s expecting to guard Arenas quite a bit tonight.
“From what I could tell in the preseason, he looks like he’s back to his old self,” Ross said this morning. “But preseason is preseason. I guess tonight, he’ll try to turn it up a little bit and we’ll find out if he’s his old self.
“If he’s himself, he’s definitely one of the top players in the league, period. He’s a great challenge.”
Carlisle, who turns 50 today, said the Wizards’ point guard is a rare talent.
“He looked great to me,” Carlisle said of the preseason game the Mavericks played in Washington. “He was in more of a playmaking mode in the first half, then he got his high-beams on in the third quarter. He looks great physically and sort of emotionally and spiritually, too, he looks revived. He’s a guy who can beat you, basically, single-handedly.”
As for his birthday plans, Carlisle said he has nothing major planned.
“The opening game is probably big enough.”
He did get a social visit from Warren LeGarie, his agent. It’s not a business call to Mark Cuban, Carlisle said.

smart guy that would be the best thing to do is lock down Gil but the next thing to come up is how do you stop Caron after you put a lock on Gil if you want to call it that i dont think you could ever stop him just slow him down a little..
is it Tip off yettttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment from gray16

the only person that stops caron is caron. if he’s feeling it, he’s just as unstoppable as melo, if he’s not, he’s going to make mistakes and miss shots. so the only thing you can do with him is defend him the best you can, and hope it’s not one of those nights. but i think the best way flip can get caron going is have him coming off of screens, getting him open shots (inside the arc), then letting him isolate and handle the ball more.
as for arenas, he too was this same way, but now he has to prove he is still that unstoppable guy he was three seasons ago. but from what i’ve seen in preseason, it’s going to be harder than ever to stop gil from getting 20 points, due to his ability to get to the ft line. even on a bad shooting night he will be able to get around 20, factor in a good shooting night and you get 25+. arenas needs to be on attack mode though, because when he is, the wizards are at their best.
the main factor though will be the wizards defense. as we saw in that philly game, when the wizards are putting a concentrated effort in on defense, not only does their opponents struggle to get points, but the wizards’ offense runs better. so if flip can convince caron and gilbert to put in a good effort on defense, and they don’t go to the zone defense that has plagued them in the preseason, they can beat any team in this league.

Eric Snow has us 5th in the east, Brent Barry has us in 4th, For some reason ea sports listed the Wizards as the #7 seed. Go Wizards!!

Dallas is going to be a tough challenge tonight. They whipped us in the preseason, and they are at home this time. Still I think we can compete with anyone this year, and this would be a great victory to start out the season.
My keys to the game are:
1) Gilbert not only playing starters minutes, but excelling. if he gets to the line 10 times, I think it will be a good indication that we can win.
2) Bench mob. Especially with Antawn out, we will need solid production from at least 2 guys off the bench. I hope Andray and Randy are up for the game tonight.

When Paul Davis was with the Clippers, he always played well against Dirk. It was always a good match up.
Having said that and this being the first game, I don’t know if Davis will even be active. I hope not, because Davis matches up well with Dirk.

Paul Davis is a great player and a great guy. He allways puts put 100% and will try his best to contribute to the team. He is a legit big man and has a nice soft jumper as well. We NEED his size and scoring touch if we want to beat Dallas with their big men.

Arenas looked like his old self on that first possession. He drew the foul on Kidd very nicely.
Wiz looking sluggish on O tho. They don’t seem to be moving the ball around for the open J. Lots of jumpers taken with a hand in their face.

Dallas is so cheating. Everyone knows that the TV clock and the scoreboard arent exact but its only supposed to be like 2tengths different. I have the game on DVR and I rewinded it. On the TV game clock he got it off with like 4 or 5 tenghts. How can the scoreboard be that far different?

Won’t count, alas.
We didn’t finish the quarter the way we wanted to, but still… what a great first half. Especially, we played some very good defense.
Andray Blatche is playing *great basketball.* Mike Miller too.

Dallas wouldn’t be in this game w/o Barea, would they? Those of you who have been on the blog for a long time will remember that I called J.J. Barea in ‘06. Not drafted but a guy who was great in college and was a lock to be an effective NBA player.
How did I know? Wages of Wins analysis, that’s how. Believe.
Meanwhile, lets hold him scoreless in the 2d half!!

the Mavs tonight played like the old Wiz – where there were 2 focus guys (dirk and barea) and when those two started to miss shots late in the game, the other players couldn’t come in and continue to chip away the deficit.

The Wiz made it look pretty easy tonight. It felt like they won by 20.
Did I not blog a couple of days ago that Gil and Randy would be tough to handle and that they would play of each other like Gil & Hughes did. (I’m rarely right, so I have to call out when I am)
Was it just me but I never got the feeling that the Wiz would lose the lead, it would be just a matter of winning by how much.
Andray looked like a real power forward out there tonight. Just goes to show what the right coach can do.
Miller & Foye look like clutch shooters.
Too much depth to Dallas to handle.
Sweet dreams to all us Wizards fans.

Tremendous way to start the season — beating an *excellent* team on their home court, and beating them pretty good too.
Andray and Mike played *great.* And everyone else played well too.
As to Gil — WOW.

time to move on from dallas and let’s travel to atlanta

Finally, a collection of players that look like they can play together and have fun. One game, but man, the new additions look like no-brainers tonight. Makes me think back to the days of Big Gheorghe and Chris Webber..Juwan..Brent Price..Tim Legler..Ledell Eackles…except better.

This was a GREAT win for the Wiz!!!
We won dispite missing AJ and with CB3 being less than I’d like him to be. I still think that Caron feels as though he has to score every time he touches the ball…he doesn’t. It almost looks as though he is being selfish..he missed AB more than once all alone under the basket on a break. CB3 was okay…not an All-Star performance.
Good grief, we won with only one of the big three being super productive!!!
Gil was great. Blatch and Foye were spectacular!!!!!

YAHTZEE
We Got a Big Boy Team this year! That was just flat out fun to watch. I guess that answers a few questions about the rotation… I like it. Foye and Miller were teriffic additions. Oberto increased his average minutes and played amazing basketball defensively. Defense? From the Wizards? I don’t know what Flip is putting in their corn flakes but keep putting it in lol. IF Andray keeps playing like “that” ….. wow guys. I know it’s only one game, but, it was against a very good team in their house and we were never really threatened. What a Game.
WELCOME ALL THE WAY BACK GILBERT

I wonder if I went and looked at film of Caron during his all-star year, if I would see him with a lot of ISOs? moreso than him benefiting from Gil pulling in the D and him hitting open shots….

I don’t know or care so much about numbers DCB but I’d guess Caron would have been involved in more Iso’s or more to the point just taking his man off the dribble. I don’t see many plays run for Caron. He seems to work at his best as a free lance kinda guy.

39 points off the benh and only 9 turnovers were keys to victory.
Unbeleivable that ESPN gave Lebron didn’t even win his game queen james the “performer of the night” I guess Gils 29 and 9 after missing almost 2 full seasons and getting an opening night win against Dallas wasn’t considered by ESPN to be as good as a Losing Lebrons performance

This was a great game to watch. I would have joined you guys on the blogcast if I weren’t finishing up a paper for school. Unfortunately my busy schedule will prevent me from blogging on most nights but I will try to get on here with you guys here and there… from what I saw tonight it looks like it’s going to be a promising season.
Disappointed that Nick Young and JaVale McGee didn’t get any playing time. I’m surprised Mike James never saw the court either, seeing as James is a veteran with experience. But I really liked the production our offseason acquisitions made. Mike Miller nailing 3’s, Randy Foye scoring 19 off the bench, and although Fabricio Oberto didn’t really fill up the stat sheet he was sure harassing Dirk Nowitzki all night long. Sucks that Oberto did get hit with foul trouble right away but Andray Blatche more than picked up the slack for Oberto. I like Blatche’s attitude this season, reflected by his jersey number change to 7.
We’re only 19 wins away from surpassing all of last season’s total.. 1-0. Let’s keep this train rolling!!

The nice thing is that everybody played well. Caron’s shot wouldn’t fall, but otherwise he was very productive. You could say the same thing about DeShawn.
Certainly, Gil and Randy both played well — and Randy *definitely* has the position of first guard off the bench based on that performance — but really the games of the night were by Andray Blatche and Mike Miller. Especially Mike, who only played 22 minutes, yet managed 8 boards and 2 steals and got 6 points off of 4 shots.
Coaching and substitution were outstanding too!! Flip may be a keeper?

It seemed like Caron was taking the offense out of its rythm a few times…good thing is that he stopped doing it…..

dcbutler357, it looked like Caron was suffering a bit with Antawn out. They play off of each other a lot. But Caron is going to have to have to figure things out because even though I am a HUGE Caron fan, I too saw him impeding the flow of the offense. I don’t really have any doubt that things will smooth out.

Caron’s “shot” (& everything else about his game) will be fine…
But Tom, DSS can rarely find his shot (minus that miracle season of course – you know the one where he vanished in the play-offs, so no stat quotes from then please)..
If Flip is willing to let him come in from time to time & provide some defensive intensity while throwing up a few prayers that might actually drop on that rare night, fine…
But I doubt Flip will call on him to do much more.
If he does, then that means DSS is playing great ball & I’ll be overjoyed.
