Game Day Chicago
5:31 AM (Eastern time) Dave Johnson up and ready for the final pre-season game of the 2009/2010 campaign. As noted after practice yesterday Gilbert Arenas and Mike Miller are back and likley to start tonight and Fabricio Oberto could be the other forward tonight along with Caron Butler. Oberto started against the Sixers as well. Antawn Jamison is traveling with us and in great spirits. He was even offering to carry Oberto’s luggage yesterday—so just another sign that he is feeling ok despite a sprained shoulder. Again not clear on when he will be back in the lineup but just great to see him looking like he always does–anxious to play basketball. BLOGCAST–radio and blogging together continues tonight—-you can listen on 106.7 FM and we (cross your fingers) should have our LISTEN LIVE link back working so you can listen online…This is our third year of BLOGGING and doing radio together– and we are still having fun and growing—here’s to great night on the court and online tonight…check back later.
2:30 PM….Oh and by the way BLOGCAST starts at 8 eastern with Flip Saunders interview.but we will check in once we get to the United Center….and sorry Tom Mandel you can’t join us at the game….
SportzWiz checking in…: Just got news on Antawn here is the official presser.
Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that forward Antawn Jamison’s right shoulder has been re-evaluated and that the findings were consistent with the original diagnosis of a subluxation. He is expected to miss from four to six weeks from the date of the injury (Jamison sustained the injury in the Wizards’ 109-104 win in Cleveland on Oct. 14).
6:27 PM Dave and Glenn here at United Center….it is actually good news about Antawn Jamison ..in other words his shoulder is not more serious than first though….and we watched him lift weights two days a go in Philadelphia…..could be a challeneg tonight for the Bulls in the back court—Derric k Rose, Jannero Pargo, Kirk Hinrich are out with injuries.

Hopefully we start the year out strong so that we don’t rush Jamison back from this injury prematurely cause we all know how that can end up. I wonder how often Flip will go to small ball. Miller and Butler at the 2 forward spots.

Time October 23, 2009 at 3:10 PM
ditto on Antawn: I hope he gets the rest and rehabilitation he needs, no need to rush him back. If that means bringing him back in December to ensure his continued health the fans will be behind him 100%.

AJ heals fast. Like others have said, We are deep and may have to play smaller at times. This team is still talking championship even with AJ hurt. They believe it. I feel as if tonight will kinda show us what we are going to get until AJ gets back. I think Flip will go small and see that works. As long as EVERYONE is aggressive and hit FT’s….We will above .500 when AJ comes back. I see AJ coming back against Cleveland or Detroit mid November. Thats the real idea, but I also hopes he comes back @ 100%. Wizards go beat up the Bulls, thats where we were before the injuries…lets start it out again against the dabulls.

I’m with the rest of you in hopes that Jamison retures 100% healthy. Now we have two starting jobs to fill. I don’t understand why Blatche is not a shoe in at starting PF. I like Oberto but Blatche is not bad. I really want to see him play along side Haywood.
Comment from dlts20
Time October 23, 2009 at 4:21 PM
millie mill, I dont think its just about that. Its about the team. I think its still up for grabs but maybe Flip feels that if we start Blatche, and are benching NY for Stevenson then we will have no other scorer on the bench than Foye. I will say that I think Blatche dominates if he starts. Ive always said that if you put any of our young guys on the floor with Gil then they will look 10x better. Blatche would produce if he starts, without a doubt.
I think Flip will start Oberto tonight probably just to see what it looks like. How good will our D be with Wood & Oberto starting and can that lineup score enough points. 1 reason why I like it is because I think our D could be good with that lineup and it will force Gil to be aggressive. He would probably average 30 with that lineup and still be a solid passer. However, if Blatche starts then Gil can still be the more pass 1st guy that he wants to be now and Blatche is still good enough defensivley where we should be solid but how much does it hurt our bench?
Its a tough call but I think Blatche plays alot anyways and I think he should probably start
Comment from dlts20
Time October 23, 2009 at 6:12 PM
I also dont understand all the Blatche criticism when he has played well in every game except for 1. There is no doubt in my mind that if he started then he would put up great numbers. So much so that I bet alot of people will start saying that AJ should come off the bench since Blatche is putting up solid numbers and plays better D. Oberto could still start though

dlts20, Blatche criticism goes back years, probably since his second season when he started “not living up to his potential.” People said that even though he was a late 2nd round pick.
The reason, I have stated here before several times, is that Blatche is insanely talented… like freakishly talented. But at the same time he is amongst the most inconsistent players in the league (historically).
He has played well under Flip and I think he will continue to do so. Regardless of whether he starts or not I believe he will see some serious minutes while AJ is out, Flip seems to really like the “kid”. If he does well those minutes will continue.

Thanks DJ, I’m also liking the fact that we have a lot of weapons. We have a lot of options, and I’m glad that we have players with different “make-ups”, whereas we can change our methods of attack, and even though we’ve been talking about who starts, or gets the most minutes on the blog, I think it’s going to be who can we put on the floor and get a win

The Wizards need to really step up their D right now. It would really be nice to close the preseason out nicely.

If those shots start to fall for Gilbert I think he’ll be able to get back to scoring 40+ pts per game easily with how he’s playing.

Hopefully, it will be great to be 5-3, but I can live with 4-4 for preseason. Pretty dissapointing 3rd quarter though, so many rushed shots etc.

This looks like one of those games where teammates hear bad news about there teammate and come out flat. It also looked like one of those games where the team is just looking for the season to start. Its like when teams lay an egg on the 1st game back from a road trip.
Here are some things I noticed in the limited amount that I watched:
1- Gil is quick but he’s still not at that same light super quick level he was at when he was scoring 60 but I like the way he is attacking and he will get better & better as the season goes on.
2- The great thing about Gil is that he’s back to going to the basket like he did earlier in his career. Even when he was healthy at the end he stopped driving but he’s back doing it and thats great.
3-The bad thing is Gil is still turning down open shots. He use to be money at the 3pt line when he came off the screen. Today I saw Oberto set screens for him at the 3pt line where Gil was wide open and he never even looked at the basket. He just passed it on the perimiter. What made it even worst is that he would get the ball back later in the possesion and take a long contested jumper. It made no sense. Its like he said he’s not going to take 3’s so he’s passing up open 3’s and ending up with contested long 2’s. I hope he rethinks that.
4- We settled for the J way too much tonight. I hope that doesnt continue. Everyone needs to drive more.
5- We were way too selfish tonight. Everyone was out of sync and going one on one all game. I hope that was just a fluke thing. Everyone was hoging tonight.
6- I hope Flip doesnt go too crazy with the lineups. He’s an offensive guy and he shouldnt abandoned the D but dont go too crazy with it either. By that I mean with the AJ injury we cant start Oberto, then have MM get in foul trouble, and we bring in DS. That killed us in the 3rd. We had the lineup of Gil, DS, CB, Oberto, and Wood. Only 2 legit scorers and those 2 were cold. During the seaon I hope he brings in Foye at the 2 if Miller gets into foul trouble. Again, if AJ is playing then you can bring in DS but if its Oberto then you have to bring in Foye if Miller is out.
7- The best thing about this game is that weve bounced back this preseason from every bad game and there is no doubt that these guys will come out with a different mindset and play better in the next game. In some ways its a blessing that we played this bad because you know they will be pumped to play well in that opener.

I don’t think we should over-analyze this game. They’ve been better than this throughout the pre-season… we know they’re a better team than this. They’ve just had an off night.

I am a little worried about the FT’s though. IDK if that problem will go away in the first 20 games or so and I could see Wood being bad again all year.

That’s true. Also, the score of the game right now is misleading. We know that this game was a blow-out. We just need to take better shots throughout the game and also…
I was wondering- do they set enough screens for Gilbert Arenas? If not that’s what they need to do- they should have Oberto set screens for Gilbert… so he can get more open shots and hopefully he’ll be able to get his shots falling easily again.

SportzWiz – once again I created a blog only to find that the page was not available when I attempted to post. What are the chances of doing something to determine if there is activity on the blog before disconnecting? This is very frustrating.

Gabbo — when that happens to me, I use the backspace key to return to my comment (which is still there in the box), then I hit F5 to refresh that page, then I hit “Submit” again, and it works.
Obviously, I don’t know whether that’d work for you, but you might give it a try next time you have a problem?

Another method is to simply copy your block of text before you hit submit. I do it reflexively because I’ve been burned many times before (not just on this site).

re: jamison’s re-evaluation
missing about 1/6 of the season is real tough for a guy that loves to play no matter what the situation is. it was a fluke injury and that’s all you can really say about it. my initial guess was actually correct that this is a bit more serious than missing just 2 weeks of pre-season (adding pre-season to the mix and it turns out to be 2 months). like caron said – hopefully the others can hold down the fort until the captain comes back.
re: gabbo’s problem
for those that likes to write essays here (i.e., me, mandel, gabbo, doclinkin), be aware that those page errors are a result of missing the 10 minute refresh mark. what this means is that if you don’t click submit after writing for about 10 minutes or so, you’ll be booted out and hence getting the page load error.
what i usually do is before i hit submit, i highlight what i just wrote in the message box (whole thing), right click and select COPY, and then click submit. if it goes through, great. if it doesn’t, you can refresh the page and then just right click in the message box and select PASTE, and then submit. your words are still there and you won’t get pissed as much.
re: Wiz and the regular season
i’d say bring on the Nets and bring back the old refs! it’s time! espn has predicted the Wiz will be 5th or 6th in the east and that’s at least what i’m looking for.
