Should be a real party tonight. The game is also on Comcast SportsNet. No Gilbert and Miller again?

someone last week mentioned they hoped the cavs didn’t infect the wiz with the flu. well, looks like some guys got hit with it; unless “flu-like symptoms” really mean “my homies and i were out partying till 4 am and we got no energy to play a game”.

from michael lee’s wiz insider, he mentioned that the only person that got excited for the hawks game was coach saunders.

“But Saunders provided more entertainment afterward [after calling an Oberto foul "horse s*@#"]. When Hawks guard Mo Evans missed the technical foul, Saunders channeled his inner Rasheed Wallace and shouted, “Ball don’t lie!” The coaches on the bench chuckled.

Smith went up and missed the first free throw and Saunders shouted again, “Ball don’t lie!” Smith missed the next free throw and Saunders shouted, “Ball really, really, really don’t lie!” Sam Cassell nearly fell out of his chair.”

with gil keeping a belichick-ian media relationship, flip is providing the trash talk and humor. if this doesn’t get guys motivated tonight (the eddie jordan factor helps too), i don’t know what will. and how “convenient” that gil is not playing against his mentor for about 5 years.

I don’t mind if they don’t have to win tonight, but it would be really nice to see them play better than last night. We turned the ball over way too much, but the Hawks did look pretty good last night even though we had so many injuries. They could be a 50 win team this year. But of course we had three guys out and we can beat the Hawks with a healthy team.

The sixers are a test with or without Gil, Antawn, and Miller, so gotta bring our best game tonight. Great story by the way, wizards fusion. Hilarious.

Man, I am so tired of the “if only our guys were there” storyline. There’s no excuse for playing such poor defense, in fact, without Jamison and Arenas, the defense should be better. I would be ok with a poor scoring effort, but allowing the Hawks to shoot such a high percentage, and allowing them to hit so many open threes has nothing to do with the personnel that suited up (or didn’t) last night. It’s about effort and execution, but both were missing.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time October 20, 2009 at 1:05 PM

We can analyze and dream all we want…it’s fun. But until its over and done, we won’t know how many games we can win with Gil and a healthy squad (perhaps we won’t even get the chance)…and I don’t smoke anything anymore.

BTW, Larry Hughes played defense below average on-man and cheated into passing lanes for the steal which made him look better on “D” statistically than he actually was. While it is the only defensive statistic kept it is probably the worst indicator of a player’s ability to play defense.

Question guys. Would you be upset if we benched DS & NY and gave those minutes to James. I ask this because on another Wiz board a guy who went to the game last night said that James was the best player on the team and that Foye struggled running the O. That prompted alot of other Wiz fans to say trade Foye. Thats when I responded with this:

Are you guys insane? Trade Foye? I cant beleive people keep saying that. Again for the hundreth time, Gil is going to play like 36-38mpg. That means Foye will only be the point for 10-12min and the rest of the time he will be at the 2. 1 thing you cant argue is that he has been a monster at the 2 and if you put him beside Gil then he would dominate.

If you want to make a change in the rotation then you could bench DS & NY who arent doing much of anything and have James & Foye come off the bench together so that Foye is always at the 2. Just like James play those 10-12mpg that Gil isnt playing. That will leave like 60min between that 2 guard spot and the backup Caron minutes where you could just let Foye & Miller split it 30-30 or whatever. Infact, if you wanted to play James in that role then you could also for the 1st time really decide to go with Foye as the starting 2 and bring Miller off the bench to play with James on that 2nd unit. Seriously, Im not trading Foye because I think he is a junior Wade at the 2 and will end up playing more at the 2 anyways. Stevenson & NY havent impressed so lets go with James in that stretch. That lineup sounds pretty darn good to me

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 20, 2009 at 2:17 PM

James had *one* good year, earning himself a way too big contract. He is a proven non-contributor.

Nick is earning pine by his play. But I think DeShawn deserves a shot at returning to his level of play before injury — in other words, ok-passable, nothing great but certainly better than Mike James or Nick Young.

As to Foye, you think he has been a “monster” at the 2? I’m lost. Wade junior? You’re watching the same guy the rest of are watching — the one who went 6-17 and had 3 turnovers last night? Like Mike James he is streaky and once in a while gives you good results (4th quarter vs. Cleveland).

Comment from dlts20
Time October 20, 2009 at 2:37 PM

Dude, he played the point the whole game. Thats the whole theme of the story. If he’s at the 2 then he’s a different guy. Why do people act like positions dont matter. People think that they can just put you anywhere and you will perform the same way at evey position. It doesnt work that way. Its just like when the Cavs had Lebron running the point. They realized that he’s not Magic like they thought and he’s a true 3. The same thing with our boy Laron Landry. People get on him but he’s a SS that has to play FS because of the Taylor death and we have no one else. If you put him back at SS then he dominates

Comment from dlts20
Time October 20, 2009 at 2:47 PM

Tom, this is what I wrote in yestersday thread to respond to you but Ill just bring it here so we wont get confused:

Thats not true Tom. I think we were 27-17 and I dont think you can say that projects to 49 wins for the simple fact of how we got to 27-17 in the 1st place. If you remember, we started off that season slow. Its not like we were on a 27-17 pace the whole way. I think we were something crazy like 4-9 at the start and then at the time of AJ’s injury we were 23-8 in the last 31 games. It was something like that. Thats what people forget. We were like in last and came all the way to 1st.

You said the Pistons werent hot yet but thats a lie. The thing I remember the most is that Detroit was already playing well and then they made the trade for C-Webb. Everyone went crazy and booked them to win the East. They had just won like 5 straight games against good teams with Webb. We then played them 2 times in 4 days in a home & home series and won both games. Thats how we became 1st and even all the analyst were saying that we were the best team. The problem is in that last Pistons game, the same game we took over 1st, was the same game AJ got hurt and missed a month. As soon as he came back, Caron went down, and then Gil.

People act like weve had the same exact team for 10 years, have been fully healthy, and havent done anything. Its so untrue. Ernie is not that dumb. He kept us together because he doesnt think we had a full shot to prove if we are average or great and the last time we were healthy we were on a 23-8 run against beast teams like the Pistons twice, the Lakers on the road, the Suns on the road, and so on. Gil himself hasnt played in the last 3 playoffs. People dont even realize this. He’s played like 2 games in the last 3 playoffs and came off the bench for them until he had to bow out. He’s only really been in 2 playoffs series his whole career and you can argue that its only really been 1 since that 1st year was everyone’s 1st time and he was dead tired by time the playoffs came. He had nothing left. People rip him like he’s had so many chances and has done nothing but its so untrue

dlts20 — There’s really nothing to bicker about here. I’m sure we both know what “woulda coulda” is worth.

I’ve already said that if we do better than we’ve done in decades, better than 45-37 and into round 2, I’ll consider it a successful season. If we win 50, I’ll be just as happy as you. If we win 60 I’ll be just as happy as Gabbo.

In fact… if we win tonight I’ll be happy! And why isn’t the game on CSN, I wonder?

As to starting lineup, we can agree to disagree — I think, in fact, that I’d like to see Dom start at the 2, and have MM get his 30 minutes as 6th man backing up both wing positions. Don’t think that’ll happen, alas, though I’m convinced we’d win the most games that way. No, I don’t have much faith in Foye (guys don’t get lots better just because they put on the logo of my team) and even less in Nick.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 20, 2009 at 4:06 PM

That’s an incredible play by McGee — and by Nick as well. If they gave him a missed shot on that, it’s a crime: I’m pretty sure that was a backboard alley oop setting up JM. Very pretty!

Comment from SportzWiz

i think one of the best things about this blog is everyone has different opinions and see the game so differently.

IF we all had the same opinion what would be the fun of that, so whether your a stat guy (nobody in particular :) ) or a former coach (again nobody in particular :) ) it is just interesting to hear your perspectives and in my opinion there is no right way, and i myself feel as though you learn from the box score and from watching the game…

And again as wizards4life has said and DJ/GC have said and Flip Saunders has said….this team is not necessarily running everything they would in the regular season. the preseason is an adjustment period and a time to work on things and for a new coaching staff and a team with a lot of new faces thats definitely going to be the case.

in closing keep up the great conversations/analysts its always interesting to read all your thoughts.

There isn’t a basketball man alive that would start Dom at the two spot on the Washington Wizards 2009/2010 squad. there are very few basketball men (I suppose I’m considering you one Tom) that would “start” Dom at the two (or start him at any position) on any team in the league.

I also like Critt too, even though Im in the minority. I think the O may look better with him running it. The problem is that I dont think Flip really wants to play Critt or James. I think he wants Foye to be the backup PG with DS or NY beside him but its looked horrible in every game so far. I keep saying that the good thing though is that Gil will play 36-38mpg so that means Foye will only be playing 10-12mpg at the point so it shouldnt hurt us too much and I think he will improve at it game by game. I think Foye will beast when Gil comes back in the game in the 2nd quarter and Foye is beside him though

I remember I was on the Raptors board when we played them a couple of games ago and on the floor we had Dom, McGee, Blatche, and NY, and there fans were saying that group had to be maybe the most athletic in the NBA.

Butler- I really hope they can win without Gilbert. It’s nothing against Gilbert. I just remember all those years without Gilbert and us not getting anywhere. I don’t want us to be a team without our super-star… but I also don’t want our team to only be able to win because of him. I don’t want the Wizards to be that kind of team. That’s where I stand.

NY was horrible on that last defensive play. Getting him up in the air was bad enough but even before that he was done and wouldve fouled. He had his hands all over Greene and you could tell that he was scared to death in that situation. He was playing so high and looked so awkard. It cant be that hard to play D, it just cant.

On a positive note, the Sixers fans were talking non stop about how Foye was using Lou Will and how they would much rather have Miller & Foye than Rubio

WTF we won? What the hell? I thought we lost. So Mike James hit free throws with less than a second left? Lol. Wow we really need the refs back. I disliked the old refs- but this game was ridiculous.

I mean… it’s good that we won but does anyone else feel like we should have lost? I really think we should have lost after all that. I’m not being ungrateful here. I just think that none of this stuff with the fouls should have happened.

Chris Miller was asking NY about the foul but NY thought he was asking about that last FT where James shot it with the left hand and air balled it. NY told him to miss it and James shot it left handed as a joke. It almost cost us because if he wouldve hit the rim then the time wouldve ran out but instead he gave them another shot

Gilfanatic, yes & no. Should we have lost at the end right there? No doubt we shouldve definatly lost but I dont feel bad because we outplayed them nearly the whole game so we deserved the win. Even the guys on the Sixers board said that. They said that endind sucked and they need the refs back but that they didnt deserve to win anyway since the Wiz outplayed them most of the game and were without 3 of there main guys

wow, thanks for that link Gray. What is this anyways? Can you get any game you want any time you want or does it just show certain games every once in awhile?

during the season it will show games any night there is a game, but i doesn’t necessarily show every game playing that night. it was like this last season at least.

it has been showing any televised preseason game this season, so i don’t know how it will be this season. but a lot of games will be on there most likely.

i don’t know if it has archives, but it doesn’t show any games that aren’t on tv. it only shows televised games. it’s basically a stream from the channel the game is shown on.

oh ok, thats still pretty cool. so its still all good for the regular season and you wouldnt really have to pay for the league pass or does it still get you some how?

sorry to keep bothering you but Im a sports junkie. I have Direct TV and usually have to get my boy to hook me up with illegal boxes to watch things like that. Like I got the NFL Sunday Ticket without paying for it and I get all of the Premium channels but he’s having a hard time finding a box for league pass

its completely free, but as i said, last season it didn’t show all the games.

and of course, league pass has much more kicks, like archives, hd, better quality, more games, etc.

i’m still considering getting league pass broadband, but that’s a lot of money. if i had the money though, i would definitely get it, but that’s just my opinion.

Haywood was terrific, the best I’ve ever seen him. He should have a career year.

They have to have McGee in the rotation. He’s just too good. I know Oberto is solid and makes few mistakes, but McGee more than makes up for the few mistakes he makes. He make be the first future all-star we’ve drafted that I can remember.

Foye is making a believer of me. The first game he was forcing shots, just like his reputation. The last two televised games he played much better – good shot selection and playing with confidence. He’s quick – on both ends of the court.

James is playing well too, as is Stevenson.

Blatche looks tentative to me. I’d love to see him really play with passion and confidence.

6 guys in double-figures with Gil, Jamison and Miller all out…WOW!

McGee shows flashes or genius but also flashes of stupidity. Hopefully, he’ll learn as he matures. He damn near lost the game for us. But, let’s hope that he doesn’t try to learn maturity at the knee of Mike “for laughs I’ll shoot this free throw left-handed and miss everything so that the 76’s at least have an outside chance of pulling the victory out” James.. I know Mike is

CB3 and Brendan both had solid games. Brendan makes a great difference in the way we play “D”.

‘Dray 5/8 from the field, 6 boards and 2 assists in 22:14. Better than 20 12 4 extended. Really nice.

Dom had 5 boards, but also 3 turnovers in 16:32. He was 0-4 from the field. He has to be able to score or he won’t play much.

Oberto, DeShawn, McGuire and McGee dragged the field goal percentage down but contributed in other ways.

Nice work Wiz!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, its weird because I just watched the game and everyone acted like Dray sucked but I thought he looked pretty darn good

neal, i can’t see javale being an all star tbh. he has a lot of talent and skill, but he has very poor bball iq. he just tries to swat shots, jumping all over the place, and then tries to do too much on the offensive end.

if he could play within himself, he would be a good player for the wizards, but oberto is doing 100 times better out there. oberto is doing better defensively (rotations, fouling, denying passing into the post/lane) and offensively (screens, rebounds, position, passing, court vision, court presence) he’s just doing a great job out there.

mcgee will get his some day, but this season won’t be it. i will miss seeing all of his amazing dunks, but dunks surely don’t equal wins. we need someone out there who knows how to win, and oberto’s that guy.

It’s unfair to JaVale to compare him to Oberto, who is 34.

It may also be unrealistic to imagine Oberto as a major-minute rotation player in regular season. Is that what he was acquired for? No, as has been stressed repeatedly by Ernie and Flip.

OTOH, if Antawn is actually out for a while, that may change things.

As to JaVale being raw — I totally agree w/ that.
