Game Day Cleveland
1:51 AM….Dave Johnson checking in late (or early)….we just arrived here about an hour ago from Grand Rapids….Flip Saunders most pleased with 3 specific things…the defense is getting better…the play of Gilbert Arenas who managed 24 points on 11 shots…and the way the “second unit” was able to finish the game led by JaVale McGee who had 8 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter….Mike Miller told us after the game he will look to shoot more (he has been passing up good shots)… and he says he may have to play in socks…..he still wears the LeBron James shoes….he says he has had ankle problems in the past and he is comfortable with those shoes—I told him if it will keep him healthy he can wear what he wants…not sure about tonight’s lineup…we asked Flip about it after the game since it is a back to back but said he had not made any decisions on who plays and how much here in Cleveland…THANKS AGAIN for a fun night on the BLOG….BLOGCAST–radio and live blogging court side start at 7—-listen on 106.7 FM …..there will be a LISTEN LIVE link and Steve Buckhantz and Phil Chenier are here from Comcast SportsNet
11:15 AM…..Greetings again from Cleveland…Brendan Haywood again will have the night off. But it is a not big deal. He is okay and would be in the lineup in a regular season situation. He has been dressing these last two games and continues to work out…check back as I know it on who else will be in or out..and THANKS SO MUCH for all the nice comments….it really means a lot when we are here in Cleveland
5:21 PM Dave and Glenn checking in from the Q…we know Mo Williams is out with a strained right groin …and LeBron James has been a little under the weather…we will update you on his status when we have it
5:32 PM….Wizards starters are in….the Wizards will go BIG tonight….Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler in the back court…Fabricio Oberto starts at center… Antawn Jamison at small forward and Andray Blacthe at power forward
6:40 PM..
cavs starting lineup
Daniel Gibson, Anthony Parker are guards Shaquille O’Neal in the middle Anderson Varejao and Jawad Williams forward…
LeBron James is out with the flu

NBA Live just straight up dissed Gilbert Arenas. His rating this year is an 84!?!?!?!?!?!?! They gave him almost a zero dunk rating late his name was John Stockton.
The folks at EA sports must not have seen any of the Chicago training videos or Gil playing pick up ball.
I know he has been injured for a couple years but when he’s healthy he’s got some serious skills.
This is even further proof that nobody thinks we will be any good and everyone has forgotten all about us.
Don’t worry, it’s better this way. It’s easy to ambush when no one is paying attention.

5 observations:
1) For the second straight game, Young and Blatche had very sub-par games. Let the hate begin.
2) Blatche got outplayed by Kwame Brown.
3) Arenas does it again – this time at a jaw-dropping 9 for 11 shooting efficiency.
4) Stucky and Gordon had problems throwing the ball into the ocean.
5) Jamison should get a night off. He played like the last 18 in a row against Cleveland. He’s one of the few players on the team that is already lock-n-loaded for the next 6 months. There is no need to worry about his professionalism and approach to the game.

Kwame seems to have finally turned into an NBA player. He keeps it simple, plays defense and rebounds. I’m happy for him.

Good morning Dave and fellow bloggers. It was fun listening to the game online and having a wizards win! Like what Glen was calling last night… Gilbert is back! Let’s win tonight. Let’s Go Wizards!!!
@Babakism
I’m a big fan of Javale, but I think it’s going to be a match up thing every game. I would rather have Oberto being physical on Shaq or Dwight. But on other games Javale should definitely play over Oberto. He alter shots, run the floor, and jams it home.

Good morning all.
I listened to the game last night. I was very pleased with the finish from the reserves.
I was very pleased with Gilbert takin’ over the game.
I hope we come to play tonight even though it is preseason, this is still a rivalry game against the King and Shaq.

Did anyone see that scrap between Elton Brand and Jared Jeffries?
Comment from reddog271
Time October 14, 2009 at 11:38 AM
yeah i saw it. Brand elbows Jared, he had to get stiches. then brand calls Jared soft. Brand could’ve at least acknowledged that he was wrong for the elbow. mistake or not.
Comment from wizards_fusion
Time October 14, 2009 at 11:47 AM
lol @ brand-jefferies scuffle. it is a non-issue. brand grabbed a rebound after a knick player missed a long jumper (may have been a 3) and was using his elbows to clear out space. jefferies’ head just happened to be right at elton’s elbow area and got nicked. some words were exchanged and that’s about it. it’s like there is a game-stoppage scuffle every year at msg. how sad when nba fights dominate the headlines at the mecca of sports arenas.
elton’s play was not dirty – jefferies’ head was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. etan swings his elbows all the time after each rebound to clear space and that’s just what elton did. jefferies is a bit sensitive to getting hurt since he’s been hurt a lot after leaving washington for isiah thomas.
i think gil knows he’s back a couple of weeks ago. he’s just pacing himself and not showing everything he’s got at the moment. guys are getting more aggressive – which is good and being aggressive seems to be what coaches are preaching at the moment (i.e., saunders to arenas; jordan to brand).

re. Brand-Jeffries.
Sure, there is no problem playing hard. The problem is there are players who have entirely unnecessarily undisciplined arms and legs. They throw them about purposely with the problem being they are endangering the careers of other players. Swinging elbows and scissoring legs – they hurt players. Ask Arenas.

My feeling about tonight is we are going to be outrebounded, and pushed around in the paint – a lot.
Haywood was the only guy to get in Z’s way, and now with Shaq the Cavs only got stronger.
I say just for this game, put Paul Davis in and have him get pushed around. don’t think for a moment Dray or Javale can do the job.
Comment from Rick

That is what we got Oberto for, to not get pushed around.

Rick, I agree. Didn’t Dave say last night that Oberto wasn’t getting pushed around by Kwame and was getting position on him? Kwame is 270, I think that is exactly what we got Oberto for. He is great in certain match-ups.

I dont care about beating the Cavs. I hate playing them now in the regular season and I hate it even more in the Preseason because in both cases we are in a lose-lose situation. I say that because people always try to clown us both ways. If we win then they always make fun of us and say that we can never do it when it counts and that the Cavs arent playing hard while we are playing like its the finals. If we lose then they say that the Cavs own us every time. Thats why I hate playing them now. Ill just see them in the playoffs

From what you guys say Oberto was not as bad a pickup as I thought. I think I still prefer McGee. If he plays a lot this year he could be a part of getting us being one of the really good teams, as opposed to just a playoff team. But Oberto might be a better choice for tonight.
If we are going to make noise in the playoffs we also need Young and/or Blatche to play better. Good article on Blatche in the Post this morning, IMO.
Yes, it looks like K. Brown has become a legitimate NBA player. I guess the Spitons won’t like my proposal of trading Dan Snyder for him.
The Wiz on TV tonight. Yippee!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 14, 2009 at 4:18 PM
Well, as must be obvious, Oberto and McGee are kinda different as ballplayers, and they fill different needs. Not to mention that with one of them you know what you’re going to get, but not with the other one.
Very few players reach their potential. Most don’t develop much beyond what they bring to the league as rookies, and many get worse — especially the ones who depend on their physical gifts. That said, if JaVale does develop, he can be all world.
Comment from Rick
Time October 14, 2009 at 4:25 PM
javale certainly is a crowd pleaser. he’s great in the open floor and would be amazing to watch on one of don nelson’s teams.
however, most teams play defense, and on that side of the ball, javale must learn to use body position and foot work rather relying so much on agility and leaping ability.
you don’t have to be the strongest guy to play good defense. look at marcus camby — one of the best defensive centers in the league and he’s always been on the skinny side.

Guys this team is different then years past. We are deep. It would be nice for those guys to be spectacular every nights, but we dont need young and blatche EVERY NIGHT just to win. Looking at things I see lower than normal averages for everyone. Some like Gil looking better in a way, others like Jamison and Caron which deserver all-star status will be blended in will all the firepower we have. Our defense HAS to be top 12 to even have a chance to win the title. Thats the key. I believe we have it in us, we just need to play our hearts out when the season begins and dont stop till we hold up the trophy. Just dont be down in the preseason and think things are 100%. Just wait and see.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 14, 2009 at 4:41 PM
A good comparison for JaVale is Tyson Chandler. The two players’ first year production was very similar. If JaVale develops the way Chandler did, he’ll become one of the best Centers in the league in a few years.
Worth mentioning that Chandler was taken 2d in the draft in ’01. We got JaVale w/ the 18th pick, where the pickings are pretty slim — the last ten picks at 18 were: Quentin Richardson, Jason Collins, Curtis Borchardt, David West, JR Smith, Gerald Green, Pech, Marco Bellinelli, and Ty Lawson.
Don’t know about Lawson yet (tho I think he’ll be good), but you can see what I mean.

Good…our big 3, should rest too. Play the ones that need work. Just play our starters the last quarter to make things odd and see what they can do. Let Blatche and Mcgee and Young , with Foye and Miller playing around 30 mins to get them in the groover. In between the 4th just mix and match and you do and see what you can pull out!

Bad D right there by Gil and horrible by Blatche. Gil has to no that Parker loves the 3 so why play so far off. Then Blatche was bad because Boobie was dribbling, picked up his dribble, and Blatche still laid back and gave him the open 3. Why do that? If he picks up his dribble then rush him hard because he cant move then. You dont have to worry about him going by you

AJ with the sprained shoulder. I knew we shouldnt have played this game. Its just a bad feeling. Still, I think Blatche would be ok while he was out, as long as Gil is still healthy. The bad thing is that even if AJ is fine, it will probably affect his shooting for awhile since its on his right shoulder

malone & gray, I know I was overreacting. I wouldnt care about any other game but I hate the Cavs fans. I dont want to hear them talk non stop about how they didnt have there guys and still beat us or stayed with us. Thats why I hate playing the Cavs now in the Preseason or Regular season because we are always in a lose-lose situation. If we win then they clown us and say that we are playing hard like its the finals while they could care less and if we lose they try to say that they own us. I am glad to see the guys play though

One thing I have always hated is our knowledge. We play off everyone on the 3pt line even if they are some of the best shooters in the game or have no dribble to go by you. Its weird. Guys should be smarter than that. I understand the concept of the further out, the harder it is to make the shot so you want to give them some space but know the guy your playing against and the situation. Stop backing so far off good 3pt shooters
Comment from DJ-WizardsRadio
Time October 14, 2009 at 8:15 PM

@Rick that is my issue the Wizards over the pre-season are allowing teams to score 30 pts a qtr at will, I get it’s the pre-season and we may be vanilla. However defensive intensity should always be there rather pre-season or not, we are seeing the same mistakes each game with no improvement, am I crazy?

@jeffmalone you are crazy right! i will say that it seems like we are playing a lot of straight zone which will probably be used more sparingly in the reg. season where i hope to see more man-to-man and matchup zone. but no matter what the scheme, defense is almost always about effort, so it is disappointing, even for preseason.

Comment from dlts20
Time October 14, 2009 at 8:23 PM
malone, thats the main thing in every game. The D can definatly get better but I can live with it at times. What I cant live with us getting stops only to let the team get the Offensive board and score with the 2nd chances. Not only that but the opponents come up with every loose ball and score that way also. We have to have better hustle plays and defensive rebounding

@Rick the purpose of the zone is to allow jump shots and make it tough inside, funny thing is with Crab dribble it plays to the Cavs stregnth, so why???? Let’s go man to man, let’s mix it up, again I am in for vanilla, but the Wizards have been horrible in “D” for too many years to continue not to show improvement, we MUST SEE it in the pre-season to carry over to the regular season, there is NO light switch for defense!

I say that because we almost take this part of the game for granted as I stated earlier like a light switch, let’s see this team be consistent on D every game, we need to establish this NOW and let it carry over, this pattern of giving up 30 pts a qtr will kill us in the regular season. You know they say, “Injury is a part of sports.” With the Wizards it seems more like a mantra, but this year we’ve got great personnel and if a guy like Jamison has to sit for two weeks it’s not going to be a big deal.

Magic fans are scaring me. They keep saying that AJ’s injury looked like Nelson’s last year when he dislocated it and missed a ton of time. When they found out that it was a sprain they said, “they said that Nelson’s injury was also a sprain initialy and then they found out it was dislocated”.
I hope it is just a sprain and they dont change it

I’m with you guys… I hope Antawn’s shoulder is only a flesh wound. The way Z came back into Antawn as Antawn was going for the block make is look a little ugly. He is strong and in good shape… hopefully he will be ok with a few days rest.
Wow.. what a game. That one was fun. Miller for president
And how about “Fourth Quarter Foye”? How clutch was it not to miss any of those free throws? I don’t think there is a bad stat line in the bunch.
I forget who they had on point…. but my favorite play was when said point was bringing the ball upcourt as Nick and Deshawn decended on him …… Nick getting the steal….. passing the ball to Foye… who immediately lobbed the alley oop for Nick who threw it down.
We are going to be a team that is going to be fun to watch this season. All the combinations. Good Stuff.

Sorry to miss the blogging tonight — was out. Just back and watched the game. Some comments:
Andray Blatche had an *excellent* game, especially coming after a poor game against Detroit. I’m impressed w/ the work he is doing. If he can sustain this attitude and effort level, he will have an excellent season and really establish himself.
I guess we don’t have to worry about Miller’s shooting, huh?
Not to mention the rest of his skill set.
Really solid effort from Randy Foye. When he plays the 1, the offense gets a little static; otherwise, good minutes from him.
Oberto was terrific.
Antawn didn’t play much (hope he’s ok), Caron didn’t log a lot of minutes, Haywood didn’t play, and Gil wasn’t much of a factor. That means Blatche and the 3 new players won this game! Nice!
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time October 14, 2009 at 11:01 PM
Neal a labrum is the cartiledge that goes between the bones in a joint. Remember when Caron tore the labrum in his hip last year? Hopefully it isn’t nearly that severe. Cartiledge doesn’t regenerate so a labrum tear can be a significant injury.
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time October 14, 2009 at 11:10 PM
Oberto played great AND only had 1 foul. That has never happened to him before. I think he may have found the right home and coach
I’m getting excited.
Blatche’s reported off-season rededication to the game seems to be paying dividends. If he continues to remain reliable and Nick continues to play a little defense the sky is the limit for us.

@ Tom Mandel…… ” When Randy plays the one the offense gets a little static”. When compared to Gilbert well … YES

Really good game. The Wizards shot 55% from the field, 66% from three and 80% from the free throw line.
If Mike Miller can play like that he will be the starter.
I really wanted Nick or Stevenson to start because I feel Mike will be better playing the back-up SF, but you can’t deny his game.
That’s the Randy Foye I’ve been waiting to see.
The box score has Blatche playing under 6 mins. That can’t be right, but good game anyway.
Lastly I pray Jamison is ok.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 15, 2009 at 8:04 AM
Well, Miller will certainly start if Antawn is out; lets hope that doesn’t happen.
Assuming Antawn is good to go, there may be too many shooters on the floor if Mike starts. Right now, I’d probably start Dominic at the 2, and let Mike get his 30 minutes backing up the 2 and 3 spots.
Comment from Rick
Time October 15, 2009 at 8:08 AM
jamison will need to get an MRI once the swelling goes down to see if there is a tear in his shoulder. there are so many tendons and ligaments in the rotator cuff, that he could probably play even if there were a tear (depending how bad), but it might make his shoulder more likely to dislocate again.
Comment from M2
Time October 15, 2009 at 8:13 AM
Tom, Dominic?
You’re still on that?
With this roster as loaded as it is, Dom will be pressed to get 12 mins & you think he should start at the two?
Arenas, Miller, Butler, Jamison, Haywood… Without even blinking.
You put your five best players on the floor for most of the minutes (& also typically start them), it’s quite a concept.
Blatche, Foye & Oberto first 3 off the bench…
Oh & on another note, all year long i’ll constantly have “we passed on Blair?” running through my mind. It is going to drive me nuts. The kid is a beast & a lot of us here knew it (Tom M included).
Comment from wizards_fusion

I’m trying to be optimistic about Jamison’s injury but it didn’t look good at all.
He had his arm fully extended trying to win the loose ball over Ilgauskas and got wacked. Remember Wade’s shoulder injury when he was also fully extended trying to steal the ball and then got wacked? Wade never recovered that season, but he did have a dislocation + nerve damage. I don’t think Jamison’s is as severe but you never know until the MRI.
If Antawn is only out 2-4 weeks, I’ll take it.
Comment from millie mill

@ M2,
Try not to think about DeJuan Blair too much. Personally I think the Spurs did some underhanded things to convince other teams not to select Blair earlier in the draft. After all this is the NBA, the league with the best basketball scouts in the world and all those teams passed on him. Right now in the preseason Blair is looking as good as Griffin. I think he is playing with a bigger chip on his shoulder than Gilbert.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 15, 2009 at 8:40 AM
M2 — it’s not atypical to think of your starting 5 in terms of roles — not just your “five best players.” Obviously, positions, but more than that. Bowen started for SA on teams that won a ring. He didn’t shoot.
There are only so many shots to take. When the b3 were all healthy and starting, we had *no trouble* scoring. We had trouble defending and rebounding, however. That’s why I like Dom starting, and why I assumed Mike would start if Antawn is out.
You could argue for DeShawn instead of Dom, but I don’t think DS is really there physically, and in any case, Dom is longer, more athletic, a better rebounder and even a better defender, and he passes well too.
Anyway… we’ll see — but please remember: I am a *huge* Mike Miller fan. When guys like Babakism were calling him a throw-in in a trade targeting Randy Foye, the opposite was obvious to me. I think he’s one of the best wing players in the game! I’d be happy to see him start.
That said, we’ll win more games if Dom starts, we take control of game tempo, and Miller gets 30 behind the 2 and 3.
Implied in my position, obviously, is the unfortunate fact that Nick seems to be playing himself out of the rotation w/ his preseason performances.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 15, 2009 at 8:44 AM
M2 — I read somewhere that all NBA GMs were advised to pass on Dejuan Blair in the first round, obviously because of his knees (no ACL in either knee).
Passing on him in the 2d round, however!!!!!!! That escapes me.
For that matter, only a small proportion of first round picks have a long NBA career. I’d rather have a guy like Blair whose career *may* be shortened by his knees but who is a certified monster, than some guy who may not ever turn into anything at all!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 15, 2009 at 8:51 AM
millie mill — San Antonio is a very well-run NBA team, maybe the best. They’re in a relatively small market, and until this year have never gone over the luxury tax border, yet they win rings and *always* win lots of games.
RC Buford doesn’t have to do anything underhanded to outsmart most of his GM colleagues. He’s just smarter than they are. That’s what got them Blair — brains. Maybe just common sense instead of running w/ the herd?
Comment from M2
Time October 15, 2009 at 9:46 AM
Exactly… These guys are all so guilty of running with the herd. It’s really pretty pathetic. Kudos to an organization like SA for continuing to have confidence & think for themselves. It’s really ridiculous to think that it’s an unusual position.
& Tom, Dom wouldn’t start for any team in the league, let alone a loaded Wiz squad. Now I love Dom & his energy/upside but lets be realistic.
Comment from DA-Wiz
Time October 15, 2009 at 10:07 AM
I was bitter about passing on Blair as well. Especially since he would give us toughness and a physical presence which is sorely needed for us to go far in the playoffs.
I can’t imagine what a GM can do to keep the rest of the league away from a guy. All GM’s had the same info. Blair was a beast on the boards and inside scorer. Downside- a bit undersized and potential knee issue. SA just took a chance, and late in the second round it was a no brainer. Some GM’s can afford to take more chances than others. SA was pretty solid already.
The only thing I can say for Ernie, is he was looking to save money to pull in veterans to bolster the team for a deep playoff run.
But if you think Blair will have a short career, it still helps a team if you are trying to win in the next 2-3 years. He could have an impact while they are making their run at the title. just don’t give him a long term deal.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 15, 2009 at 10:42 AM
M2 — take a close look at Dom’s stats per 48. He is very, very productive. He even brought up his FT % to a quite respectable level in the last half of last season.
Yes, his FG% is still a little too low, but for his role that’s a good thing — we don’t have shots for him on the starting 5, and he doesn’t need to shoot to be effective. *Everything* else he does is stellar.
Please understand, I’m *completely* analytical about this — I don’t “like” Dom for some reason that for example I *don’t* “like” Nick. I like them both — good guys, both.
I’m *only* interested in their per-minute production across the board — that’s what wins games. One of the most common mistakes in understanding the game of basketball is thinking that scoring determines how good a player someone is.
*Obviously,* Mike Miller is a better player than Dom, for example — and a *way better shooter*.
But… won’t there be more shots for him if he comes in when at least 1 or 2 of Gil/Caron/Antawn are off the floor?
Comment from M2
Time October 15, 2009 at 11:27 AM
Ball movement… Open shots… Everyone needs to be able to knock them down…. Everyone needs to play unselfishly… Fire power at every position keeps the defense honest… Best (when considering all aspects of their games) players on the court at every position.
This is the NBA!
Dom, Dre, Nick aren’t that right now.
Another example: It’s been a damn shame to have DSS as our starting two for the last few years. Ridiculous. He is NOT a starting two in this league.
I am fired up for this season. Minus some extra low post beef we are ready at every position. I have been a Wiz fan since Wes Unseld basketball camp in 1974 & this is the deepest team we’ve had since. Keeping in mind that the young squad of C Web, Howard, Wallace, etc in 94 had me excited for a minute (& only a minute) as well…
All this said, NO WAY Dom starts at the two in 09/10!
Everyone get last years rag tag team & anything they supposedly accomplished (relative to growth) out of your minds.
We are gonna be VERY good!

I feel like Javale needs to play over Oberto. Oberto culdn’t fill up a box score if his life depended on it. I know he does alot of smart things on the court and I am happy to have him on our team. The point is that while Oberto might be a smart savy veteran player who won’t make mistakes on the court, he also won’t be a difference maker either. Javale has the potential to be a game changer. Sometimes he might make silly mistakes that will hurt you but other times he can make plays that no one else is capable of making. you just have to hope he does more of the good than the bad.
It’s like Zorns offense. Whats the point of being so damn conservative if your going to lose by 3. Why not take a chance
