Gameday Grand Rapids
SportzWiz checking in…The Wizards return to the court tonight against the Detroit Pistons at 7:00pm…Blogcast will be underway at 7pm with all the usual suspects running the show…We will also have a listen live link up there so of course you can listen to Dave and Glenn announce the game from the Van Andel Arena.
Tonight is the fourth preseason games for both teams…it will also be the first time that Flip Saunders will see his former team, the Detroit Pistons. A lot of new faces on the Pistons roster since Flip was there two years ago…Gone are Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups and in their place are Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva.
As far as the Wizards, today’s game marks the halfway point of the preseason and another dress rehearsal for the team before the season kicks off on October 27th, which is exactly two weeks from today. Once again game tips at 7 and we’ll have a listen live link for you up prior to the game.
5:06 PM….Dave and Glenn checking in from Van Andel Arena…..with the busy schedule there was no formal practice yesterday although the players all worked out on their own anyway…..had a great steak dinner last night…have yet to see any rapids…grand or otherwise….and was put on hold to see if they had any Special K cerial (thought this was the land of Kellog’s) ..they did have Special K….and this is actually a very nice town……Brendan Haywoodwill get another night off (it’s no big deal it is pre season so there is no need to rush)….Mike Miller will start at two-guard…..Caron Butler Antawn Jamison and Fabricio Oberto ….will make up the starting five… we start broadcasting at 7 on 106.7 FM and LISTEN LIVE LINK online….

Quick question any rumblings from the coaching staff about the slow start of Mike Miller..He’s said it isn’t about scoring points with him his main objective is to win but in Sunday’s game I was listening to the radio, PBP great job by the way Dave! you made a comment about Gil going up to Mike and telling hinm to shoot the ball..I don’t want to see him play like he did last season in Minnesota your thoughts!
Comment from reddog271

well Miller didn’t play in one preseason game. He’s done everythign but shoot well. He’s rebounding. passing and playing solid Defense.
Comment from Dakota Wizard
Time October 13, 2009 at 12:06 PM
He can do all of those things I just hope he shoots the ball a little more than a year ago. Hey this guy is multi talented I didn’t want people to get down on him if he doesn’t stroke the rock as much as he has in the past prior to last season in Minnesota.
Comment from reddog271

when the bullets start to fly. I honestly doubt scoring will be an issue with this team. It’s finding people that can consistantly do the little things. Miller not only can do them. He seems to enjoy doing them. Same with Stevenson.

This is one of those “problems” that disappears under a minute or two of analysis. Yes, Mike’s shooting was down last year. But overall he had a great season. By my measure he was the 4th best 2 guard in the league.

reddog — Dakota Wizard was worrying about whether Miller would shoot enough. I’m not worried about that, because we have a zillion shooters on this team. His overall play last season was outstanding.
Dave Berri (my analysis guru) had him ranked 4th among shooting guards:

I was just concerned that the Wizard fans would come down on Mike if he didn’t score. The T-Wolve Bloggers just crucified him last year and I know for a fact that he was terrribly un happy in Minnesota. I love his game and your right there are enough shooters on this team. Miller does so many other things than can help the Wizards win he doesn’t need to score a lot pts every game. The great thing about this board is you all know the game…T-Wolve Fans are another story! It will be fun to watch the Wizards this season consistantly for the first time!

Mike Miller I thought I knew was a sharp shooting machine
with no conscience. However the Mike Miller I see now has no three pointer shooting accuracy but just wants to fit in! This man has some rebounding ability but what did we bring him here for and thats being a THREE POINT SHOOTING MACHINE and keeping the pressure off the All-Stars! I hope the shooting guard spot will bring back Old Memories and he just explodes like he did in college and when he first came into the league! I know Ben Gordon will be shooting like crazy so how are we going to stop him and what counter punch will we have to stop his offensive borages! I would definitely like to also see P.Davis out there to see if he gets into fouls trouble or will thrive offensively when he plays with the real pros out there. Rebounds , freethrows made , fastbreaks will be a factor!
Comment from neal
Time October 13, 2009 at 3:20 PM
Miller is our most accurate shooter from 3 point range, and from 2 point range excepting the centers. I’d certainly rather see him shoot jump shots than anyone else. I hope nothing serious is going on in his head to restrain him.
Comment from AUNDRA
Time October 13, 2009 at 3:57 PM
The fourth quarter disappearing act is a keep sake here in the past but it definitely doesn’t have to be the future. We must turn up the defense and control the clock with penetration and freethows .However most likely the hometown can hack at well and then we’ll have to go immediately to plan B. We have to start the block party and three point borages until the game is over!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 13, 2009 at 4:14 PM
Miller did everything better last year than the year before, except he shot less (4 fewer attempts per 40 minutes), and his 3pt% was a little down. He shot 55% from 2 point range — a great number! Had more rebounds and assists, more blocks, fewer turnovers, fewer fouls, and about the same on steals.
I’m not worried about Mike Miller.
Comment from Rick
Time October 13, 2009 at 4:41 PM
Look at the shooting percentages of the guys supposedly vying for the starting 2 spot:
Young 36%
Miller 27%
Foye 26%
Stevenson 40% (but only a few shots)
I know it is only preseason, but that is pretty ugly.
I’ve been saying this for at least 2 years now, but the best 2-man we’ve got is Caron Butler. Start him at the 2 and slide Andray in at the 4 and that is our best lineup.
People say “But Antawn can’t really guard opposing 3′s”, well he doesn’t really guard opposing 4′s either, but if it is that big an issue, then let Andray guard the 3.

Rick, like you said it’s preseason. Let’s come back to shooting percentages when we hit 10 regular season games.
Like Tom, I like that Miller did everything better last year than shoot. He showed us for the majority of his career that he could shoot, last year he showed us just how good he is at everything else. Combined… can you say starter?

Tom, I just read your response to me from yesterday and I resent that. You basically made it sound like I was being the ultimate homer. What proof do you have that we are not on those teams level? We have just as much talent and are finaly healthy. People said the same thing about Orlando last year and now look. We were with those teams before the injuries hit and I bet anything that we will be in that group again this year

more & more each game Gil is starting to take over. You can tell he’s getting more confidence and starting to feel more dominant. If he plays like this then we will be hard to beat when the season starts.
Im not worried about his turnovers. To me thats a combination of him being rusty, us using so many different guys, everyone trying to learn the system, us using a vanilla offense, and his hand injury. He will be fine. Besides, the leaders in turnovers are always the best players because they have the ball so much. Its always guys like Nash & Wade who are at the top

FisherCob, the weak inside presence is, and this is an excuse, probably a result of Brendan not being in the middle. From what I know of the Wizards from past seasons he is essentially the voice the creates the cohesion on the defense.

Hows the Wizkids freethrow percentage so far!
Comment from neal
Time October 13, 2009 at 8:10 PM
dlts20, Arenas has had a high turnover rate ever since he’s been in the league. His career rate is by far the highest on the Wiz. I think it’s because his confidence leads him to try to do too much, such as by risky passing or trying to dribble between defenders. Similarly, he has often shot too much. Hopefully his maturity will finally teach him to trust his teammates more.

Gil’s high turnover rate is a product of the number of possessions per game that involve him doing something with the ball. He’s not actually especially turnover prone when you look at his turnover rate on a per-possession basis.
Both Jamison and Butler are abnormally good at not turning the ball over, so Arenas looks even worse by comparison.

Defense also makes you use much more energy than offense, so alot of offensive guys tend to slack more on the defensive side. Thats why guys that can do both are that much more valuable.

I notice we see very little of a “young” line up (Young, McGee, McGuire, Blatche, Foye, for instance)….

I wonder how much of an impact Jamison and his style have influenced the post games of Blatche and McGee. I love to watch Antawn but is that stuff something that can be taught?

McGee does some great things but follows that with real bone-headed plays. Must drive a coach a little crazy.

If McGee would take a Chris Anderson-type role, he would be well served — but he thinks he is a much better offensive player than is actually the case. He should be putting back misses and playing defense and bringing energy. He should not be looking for his own shot.

The Mike Miller stuff is serious because if you go to the Wolves boards thats all they talked about. How, he’s supposed to be a top notch shooter but all he did was pass up shot after shot. Now he’s doing it with us too. He’s got to shoot the ball

The good thing is that the wizards are deep enough and have enough vets, besides the big three, to learn from (oberto, miller for example) can teach more than just offense….this is going to be an exciting season

I love Flip & Glenn. I love how Flip is basicaly forcing Gil to be aggressive even when he didnt want to and I love how Glenn just told Miller that he wants him to be more aggressive and finish those drives. Players are human and they listen, espicaly when you know its for there benefit and the benefit of the team

The tell of the tape!
37-79 FG
4-15 3PTS
23-29 FREETHROWS
7 STEALS
15 TURNOVERS
20 ASSISTS
46 REBOUNDS
NOTES: MILLER IS TOUGH HE IS A REBOUNDING MACHINE WITH 8 AND HE FINALLY MADE A THREE POINTER SO I’M RELIEVED OF THAT! THE BALL OF THE GAME GOES TO BIG GUY MCGEE HE WAS TOTALLY AWESOME IN THE FOURTH MIONEY QUARTER. GIL TORN IT UP WITH24 POINTS IN 27 MINUTES AND CONTROLLED THE PAINT WITH DRIVES AND AND ONES! GREAT JOB!!!

Wasn’t able to listen to the 2d half, alas. Great to get a win.
Nick is getting heavy minutes every game, which means that Flip is trying to figure out what he can expect from him and trying to give him every chance to step forward, but it just doesn’t seem like Nick can get anything done.
Andray got 5 fouls in 14:49.

I love beating the Spitons. My disillusionment is gone for the moment.
I really hope Blatche isn’t reverting to being all-world in the foul dept. Did McGee foul a lot too?
Miller has got to shoot.
Comment from GlingGling
Time October 14, 2009 at 2:31 AM
Miller knows he has to shoot, that’s what matters.
Andray is gonna be Andray and Nick is gonna be Nick. They’ll be used differently and of course people learn a little bit every year but they is who they is.

I posted this vid last night of the full game between the Raps & Wiz. IDK if youre allowed to do that on here so take it down if its a problem. Anyways, I hope for a great game tonight with no injuries. I also wonder what vet or vets will sit out tonight. They say that Wood is fine but I may sit him one more game just to be safe
