Game Day Toronto

8:19 AM….Greetings from Canada and Happy Thanksgiving…Dave Johnson…checking in..and yes Monday is Canadian Thanksgiving…After two pre -season games Wizards fans have some things to be thankful for…Gilbert Arenas is back…like all all players he has to get into a regular season rhythm and probably more so for him because he was out so long and returns to a new team… Brendan Haywood’s…sprained right ankle is not serious and he is with us on this trip….I would not expect him to play this afternoon but maybe Tuesday in Grand Rapids against the Pistons…..And yes terrific analysis on yesterday’s BLOGS…it’s good to have the back and forth…and opinions might be different but they are always backed up……I know it is NFL Sunday but hope you can spend some time with us….BLOGCAST–radio and blogging together starts at 3PM–on radio on 106.7 FM and we will provide a LISTEN LIVE  link. See you later.

1:49 PM  Dave and Glenn checking in from Toronto…starters are in…..Arenas along with Randy Foye in the back court…Mike Miller and Antawn Jamison at forwards….Fabricio Oberto will start at center…Brendan Haywood is on the trip but will not play today..and Caron Butler has been given the day off…he is fine..Flip Saunders has said he will rest vets throughout pre-season…..BLOGCAST starts with Saunders comments at 3….on 106.7 FM and online

@GlingGling, you are probably riight, but I’m an old coach and I try to get a read on everything. I could probably share a little less of my opinionated self.

Toronto tonight – I’ll be listening to DJ and GC.
Go Wiz!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gilbert’s skiils are all there right now, and they’ll get even better as the season moves on. The issue is Gil is that his march to his own drummer will not make us better. I only hope that this is some scheme by the staff of not showing too much too early.

going back, i didn’t get to see much of the wizards game, so i can’t give a good analysis of what i saw, but if there’s anything i’ve learned over the years it’s that preseason is a bad way to judge how a team will do in the regular season.

this team is in a feeling out process, with a whole new offensive system, some new faces, new talent, everyone’s trying to find their role. and until everyone finds their own role, the team cannot gel and accomplish the team goals. preseason games are just scrimmage games, the only meaning to them is to learn, and get better from them, and i know that’s what this team is going to do.

from the stats, marion had a great night. dirk probably beat jamison pretty easily, but dirk is arguably the hardest pf in the league to guard, unless his shot isn’t falling, or your name is tim duncan, you most likely won’t be able to stop him. but the defense will get better over time.

one more thing i want to talk about is the new refs. from the little bit i saw of the wizards game, and the 3 quarters i saw of the phoenix game, i am not impressed. there have been a lot of fouls being called, which i felt were either bad calls, or needed to be no calls. but they are in a feeling out process as well, but as of now, i can’t wait to get the old refs back. no need for a season to be ruined over this.

last thing, from the little bit i saw of arenas, he’s doing exactly what i expected, experimenting. but by the time the regular season comes around, i don’t expect those types of turnovers, and i think he’s going to be more aggressive, especially in a game like last night.

Yeah, I think people are too hard on Gil right now. I mean the guy basicaly missed 2 years and 3 playoffs. I think he’s just trying to find himself a little right now. He’ll get it.

When I rewatched the game back, the guy who stuck out in to me was Miller. I have never been so impressed with someone. Everything he did was with mad hussle and he literaly did everything and did it at a super high level. He closed out on D, he ran numerous times from the top of the arch to the paint to grab a board, he put the ball on the floor, he showed range, he passed super well, and just showed great basketball knowledge. The thing he did the most was play super hard and I loved that. He will help us a ton this year

miller is definitely one of those guys that can make a team so much better with his hustle. i’ve liked him as a player since he was in orlando and memphis, and he’s only gotten wiser since then. i expect him to shoot a good percentage as he always does, get some reb, and assists, and do some great things for this team. i also expect him to start by the time the season rolls around.

him coming off of screens with gil at the top of the arc looking for him is a deadly combination. you could literally run that to death, with some pick and rolls with gil/twan, gil/haywood, and even have butler coming off of screens, that would make for an amazing starting lineup.

game on tv anywhere?

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time October 11, 2009 at 1:34 PM

Looking forward to the game today, and blogging with you guys!! Caught the re-play on NBA TV with the Wizards vs Mav’s, and I came aaway impressd. The fire power we have on offense is really something to see, I guess the only thing that worried me as a fan was the defense. The Mav’s seemed to score 30+ pts in every qtr, and we were leaving the shooters on the perimeter wide open for 3’s. But this is the pre-season so hopefully we will get a better effort tonight. Blatche and McGee really played well. and Miller an Foye olayed ok but struggled a but to get into the flow. Caron looked in mid-season from, and Jamison also played very well. And Gilbert played a great fllor game in the 1st half, had some nice assists, and in the 2nd half picked up the scoring. Also had 5 turnover’s but I am sure he will play better. Over all he attacked and really looked good. Nick in my opinion has really made the BIGGEST jump his shot looks so much better, and his decisions and shot selection has really improved, and you can see the effort on defense.

Overall the addition of Miller and Foye, as well as the vet Oberto really seem that it may take this team over the hump. I really like more of the pick n roll sets, and the overall passing of the team. McGee also looked good and as well as DOM.

Interesting starters. That said… all of those players are starters (in the sense that they have been). Nice to have that kind of veteran leadership.

Heck, even Dom was a pretty much a starter last season, with good numbers to boot.

I am “stuck” with the Redskins game until 4:00 but will try to listen after. I agree with gray16 – what little I’ve seen of Miller has been impressive. I also think Blatche looks better. Nothing really specific, he just looks better.

Glenn Here:
Talked to Flip before the game, said preseason is the time to evaluate combinations and players. I think it’s going to br interesting today, both teams have no problems scoring, but must improve defensively. Love to see Arenas come out and look to score and distribute.

Yeah, some day when I got some money+time I’ll come to visit the Wizards too…but not so soon i guess!

Raptors? We can take them, no problem. Don’t really know how Hedo will fit in, but if we can control Bosh, we’re good. And since we got oberto …I think we’re good =)

Saunders does not seem to trust McGee much, he has hinted it in his previous comments as well

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time October 11, 2009 at 3:26 PM

hey 2stepsaway, I really think he is working on parts of his game, like assisting and defense to this point. Scoring, Arenas can do that in his sleep, setting up teamates and making them better as well as being the true leader, it is a work in progress. When we tip it up against Dallas, you will see the combo of pass and assists from Areans, I can see him averaging a double double this years, points and assists.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time October 11, 2009 at 3:28 PM

Comment from mcgeemaniac

Liked the improvement rebounding / FT shooting. Still need to work on the defensive rebounding after missed shots.

Well, great second quarter except for the last 2,5minutes. Antawn was amazing as always, Arenas was showing his skills, oberto got great D, Javale needs to avoid fouls…yeah…it’s ok I guess.

When’s the game against the cavs? ;>

Cya Guys, see ya for the next game. Thanks for the great radio show!

Wasn’t able to listen, alas — tho I probably would have felt frustrated by what was obviously not a very good performance — at least by most of the guys. Antawn seems to have played great, and JaVale just keeps filling up the stat sheet.

Andray reverted to his turnovers and fouls style of play. Obviously, he played Center today.

Who played in the 4th quarter? We went into it w/ a 4 point lead and lost by 7.

Nick and Randy were awful.

Flip can’t be too happy right now.

I hope we don’t rely on Blatche making a winning contribution this year…Still see his play as very good on a street pickup game…

mike miller has 4 pts on 4 shots in 32 minutes? that’s not what we need.

once again, we’re were out-rebounded… but our passing was good.

it’s hard to get a real sense of the game from the stats alone, but it does seem like Blatche will be solidly in the rotation and that McGee is making a case for himself.

Comment from tyrone20000
Time October 11, 2009 at 6:50 PM

Looking at Blatche stat line you would think he is playing well. Certainly shooting well. It is not just one play but when he came in against Dallas and got his lay up blocked that led to a Dallas fast break lay up. No foul called on that play but on the defensive end, the guy completes his lay up. Blatche fouls the guy for a 3 point play. Another play that happened in the Dallas game when Blatche was on Defense. He was supposed to stop the guard from turning the corner and getting to the basket. Not only did he not stop him but he blocked his teammate from getting back to that guard in order to get back to his man who was not rolling to the basket. The guy ended up with a lay up. This is disturbing to me because Blatche either does not understand what needs to be done on defense and/or he is just a slow big guy. I believe he just SLOW on his feet!

alright, i need one thing BRING THE OLD REFS BACK.

how the heck could a team shoot 38% and still get 100 points?

of course i didn’t see the game, but that is an awful lot of fouls called. i hope this doesn’t continue into the season, hopefully players are just making dumb fouls, or the old refs come back, because there have been a lot of fts in this preseason.

Disillusion is rearing its head.

How did Oberto look?

The Post said McGee is third on the depth chart at C, behind Oberto. I don’t get it.

Comment from gray16

that makes two of us neal. i guess oberto’s bball knowledge and experience puts him over javale at the moment, but i think javale, even while not having the experience does a better job.

It sure did fall apart in the 4th quarter. Gilbert played like a drunken wild donkey in the 1st quarter and I believe all four of his turnovers were in that 1st quarter.

He played like a cobra with a rocket pack in the 3rd quarter and was the reason we had a lead going into the 4th. Too bad the 4th quarter guys couldn’t close the deal.

Neal, Oberto was mostly just fouling but he moved the ball a bit on offense.

I wouldn’t be disillusioned by preseason. It’s there for exactly this reason, to give teams a chance to get into the groove of the season. If it wasn’t for Flip and Cassell on the sidelines I would be more worried.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 11, 2009 at 9:16 PM

Whenever you roll the ball out, you want to get a win. No one takes these games at the value of a regular season game — but that’s not our team and not the other team either. But, Toronto — not a good team — won, and we lost.

Still, we didn’t play Haywood, Caron or DeShawn — too early to worry.

I’m not too worried about Miller. I have several seasons of data on him; he should be fine. But either Nick and Andray perform in the pre-season or you can assume they haven’t really progressed.

Don’t know what to say about Oberto, except that he’s not Antonio McDyess. He won’t play much in regular season.

I don’t think Flip can be very happy w/ what he is seeing.

Comment from GrifonRacing

I wasn’t able to hear the game, but, when “given my new favorite stat the +/-” Oberto had the best game at +14 while scoring no points, getting 2 rebounds, and 4 fouls in 15 minutes (by the way why Oberto has averaged 14 min a game over his career… he fouls a lot) it couldn’t have been a very good game for anybody. Gil and Randy were second best at +6. Andray was the worst at -21 with Nick and Mike James tied for 2nd with -13 and Dominic??? at -10. Must have been a good game to miss.

It’s preseason and Flip is trying a lot of new things and combinations. I’m sure we will look a little bit better when opening day comes around.

Comment from neal

The other teams are trying new things/combinations too. That’s not much consolation.

If Saunders & company can’t get a decent defense out of these guys it’s time to trade at least 2 of the big 3 and rebuild IMO.

reddog271, I’m with you. I’m perfectly happy to be watching NBA basketball again, with all the imperfections of replacement refs and preseason rotations.

I’ve got an idea… let’s fire Saunders 33% win record!!! UNACCEPTABLE!!! And trade Jamison cause he’s old and Brendan cause he’s always hurt! Start Stevenson at POINT!!! Bring Caron off the bench for 22mpg so he stays healthy! And PLEASE PLEASE buy out Arenas’s contract!

Grifonracing — that +/- number doesn’t really tell you anything much. Look at what the guy *does.*

Efficient shooting (not number of points scored), rebounding, steals, no/low turnovers — those are the key numbers. Blocks, assists and (lack of) fouls are secondary.

In *every* case — not “sometimes” or “usually” but *every time* — the net of those numbers is better for the team that won the game than for the team that lost the game. And the net is just the sum of what all the individual players did. So, if you want to see whether a guy helped his team win or try to win — those are the numbers to look at.

I’m irate that other fans/bloggers still look at the Wizards players on a game-by-game statistical performance as the basis for their comments.

The box score showed Foye, Arenas, Blatche, and Young shooting a combined 14 for 45. Aside from Arenas, how many times will the other 3 guys shoot more than 10 times in a regular season game? Exactly.

Instead of looking strictly at shooting, some of you guys should take a look at how others fit in the scheme of things during a game. Most people watch the guy with the ball; however, if you start to watch the other guys without the ball, you’ll learn more about what goes on. There is no reason to get moist when you see a successful backdoor cut if your eyes focus on how the finisher got open from his defender. It is a beautiful game.

By next Sunday, Redskins will have faced 5 straight opponents without a win this season. After the first four against the “oh-fers”, they gave up 2 wins instead of snagging all 4 for themselves. Looks like all the positive sports action for DC will be coming out of the Verizon Center only for the next 6 months.

Irate? Everyone here is a Wizards fan.

We’re all interested in how the young players are developing. That’s why we might point out that Nick went 2-11. Flip says he’s earned these minutes with his play in camp. How many minutes will his play in pre-season games earn him?

Comment from Rick
Time October 12, 2009 at 8:39 AM

Hey Tom, *every* time you add up the sum of the individual players +/- it will tell you which team won as well. so not really sure your “net argument” can be used to support your preferred statistical framework.

even jamison, who has shot relatively well, has shot poorly this preseason. guys are just missing open looks. i think they are still thinking too much on offense, as they are still learning the schemes. the shooting pct will get better naturally.

Comment from reddog271
Time October 12, 2009 at 9:10 AM

Tom… theres a lot more to having a good or bad game, than shooting percentage. and as someone has stated, he’s not going to be getting a large number of shots in games. Unless it’s a game where he’s hot and they are going to him. It’s not like Nick can’t score. It’s been 3 preseasons games. people need to relax

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 12, 2009 at 10:33 AM

Yes, Rick, by definition the sum of the +/- numbers will be 5 times the score differential of the game — because there are 5 guys on the floor. That’s the problem. It doesn’t tell you anything about an individual player to know the +/- while he was on the floor.

reddog271 — obviously, there’s more to having a good game than shooting %. There’s also rebounding, steals, assists and blocks; together with low numbers of fouls and turnovers. Those are the things that determine the final score — and over time they determine a team’s “differential”: how much a team scores per game on average, and how many points it gives up per game on average. That number, “differential”, coordinates about 95% with a team’s win-loss record.

That’s what we’re interested in here, right? Wins and losses. Or are you interested in “potential” or dunks on YouTube?

Comment from reddog271
Time October 12, 2009 at 10:57 AM

I’m interested in my team. Win or lose. I’m not a fan that gets mad at the team when they don’t win. I support the team. I don’t support a winning team. So when they win I’m happy, when they lose, I look forward to the next game and hope they win that one. Sports are supposed to be fun. People somehow changed it to life and death. Stop taking it so serious and you might enjoy it more.

Comment from Rick

Tom, of course I agree, but you get my point. All stats need interpreting. In a team sport, there is no mathematical equation based on stats that can tell you how good an individual player is, they are all only indicators. Just as the +/- stat is an indicator of something (what I am not sure).

Comment from tyrone20000
Time October 12, 2009 at 6:00 PM

The +/- tells a lot more than we all know. Does not pin point any thing specifically but I’ll bet anyone that winning teams have certain players on the floor that always scores a +…

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 12, 2009 at 8:16 PM

reddog271 — what you say makes total sense. An excellent corrective. We do get too involved in winning and losing. Thanks for chiming in with that.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 12, 2009 at 8:20 PM

Tyrone — better teams have better players, yes. That’s what makes them better teams. And better teams win more games, so by definition they have better +/- numbers.

But the +/- numbers do not tell you anything about the contribution of individual players.

Take the case you cite that “winning teams have… players… that always score a +”. The other 4 guys on the floor w/ him *also* have their +/- numbers pushed up, whoever they are.
