Wizards Sign Fabricio Oberto
Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed free agent forward/center Fabricio Oberto. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.
“Fabricio is a proven winner with extensive playoff experience,” said Grunfeld. “He is a skilled big man and a rugged veteran that augments our frontcourt depth at both the center and power forward positions.”
Oberto (6-10, 245) has career averages of 3.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game with a .572 field goal percentage in four seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. Originally signed by San Antonio in 2005, Oberto was the starting center on the Spurs’ 2007 NBA Championship team. A native of Argentina, Oberto has been playing professionally since 1993 and helped guide his home country to the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Previously this summer, Oberto was traded to Detroit as a key figure in the five-player deal that sent Richard Jefferson to San Antonio (he was subsequently waived by the Pistons).

I presume he’s irrelevant until/unless we have an injury. But I guess he’s as good insurance as anyone else for cheap for a year.

The good news:
Best FG% on the Wiz
More assists than our other bigs per minute
Only Haywood, McGuire & Jamison have fewer TO’s/min
The bad news:
Fewest rebounds/minute of our bigs
Lowest FT% on team (57%)
Only McGee gets more PF/minute played

Im happy the Wizards have gotten Oberto, but if the Wizards are not going to trade for Elton Brand. Then they should sign free agent David Lee as well.

neal, high PF/minute could indicate a facet of the role he had with the spurs. Can’t defend his low FT% though.

Unfortunately Wiz4Life Coach Hopla is no longer with us.
Oberto is insurance. Not much more. He only averaged 12 to 15 minutes a game as a “starter” for the Spurs. He is here to back up the 4 and 5 in emergency situations and to give a player or two a rest. He isn’t going to set the NBA ablaze. If he doesn’t foul out before half time that would be a plus lol. note: he fouls a lot.

Oberto is our 3-4 minute man lol. Make hard fouls and flop. Whoopies! Well we do need someone like that, we should have Ginobli, Horry, and oberto and make the biggest flop team in the nba…. oh wait wasn’t that spurs?

Hey Sportwiz if you ever see Gil please tell him that he should consider blogging again? It makes my life that bit more interesting.

Anybody who plays in the NBA is a very skilled basketball player so, no, Oberto is not limited to 3-4 minutes and foul ‘n flop. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t wind up playing well over 1000 minutes. It’s a long season, players get dinged up, he’s versatile, matchups vary, etc.

Yeah I meant if there were no injuries. If there is an injury to any of our PF or C then he will obviously get some serious minutes. I like him, as he doesn’t seem to be a play for stats guy, he does smart things and is a capable veteran player with playoff and championship experience!
