I think Mike Miller is going to be an amazing catalyst for this team. I really wanted Dom to start this year but now I see him spelling minutes for Mike M. and Caron. That small forward position is stacked.
Think about this… the ball movement Flip will bring with three small forwards that are great passers.

I have had nothing but technical difficulties all day! First I had to miss lunch to work on a corrupt document, then I was late to finish a project because of it, traffic was horrendous, I had to pick up my husband because the red line was not running smoothly, etc etc. I am finally home and ready to watch this draft. I was planning to go to ESPN Zone, but then all heck broke loose!
So what do people think about the picks so far? Anyone upset about Rubio? I’m not.

Flynn at 5’11, can score, but cannot play sg due to height mismatch

I think Jermaine has an ugly cap number…

If #31 isn’t Dejuan Blair, I sure the heck hope we pick him at 32. He is going to be a stud in the league and fits our need beyond anyone else I could have imagined.

@ GR
Reason why Blair is not picked by anyone yet:
Blair’s decision [to go into NBA draft] is a gamble partly because he has twice undergone reconstructive knee surgery, a red flag for NBA teams seeking durability in a league where teams play more than twice as many games per season as college teams do.

Come on, Jeff. Faith is great, but there’s no shame in posing the question. We have plenty of backcourt pieces to trade.
Why would we need more backcourt tradebait that is (1) not as good as the guys on the roster (2) not as good as the people available to be drafted.
With JaVale last year you could see his potential. I can’t see this guy’s potential being high as compared to our current players or the 2 Pitt guys.

This has a got to be the weakest draft I ever saw. One guy needs a liver transplant, another didn’t even start, others are playing for some island club teams, what gives? Particulalry no big men to be had either.
What is going on with the Lakers picking for the Knicks? I heard of outsourcing but this is ridiculous. If I was picking for another team I would have selected someone like Angela Landsberry. Oh wait, she was already taken. Now that was one weak draft.

The reasons Blair was not drafted were easy:
1. He is only 6’6″ for a front court player=short as heck

One Analyst describe Blair as “playing under the rim.”
Not good for a power forward.

Tom took one look at the board… saw who we picked… and split (like I thought of doing… but was having too much fun). WAIT till he reads we sold the pick on top of “who” we picked. He is going to go “BALLISTIC”.
Ok.. for real now.
Nite all

@ jmpalomo:
it’s ok – you don’t have to convince to us that blair’s not worth it with his weaknesses. ernie didn’t draft him and that’s that.
as dave johnson said earlier, ernie is going to use free agency or other trades to get a veteran or two. ernie didn’t want to deal with young kids this off-season.

how much cash is cash considerations? enough to pay the luxury tax when we sign a veteran free agent big man?

Sold it for cash? I don’t care where Blair plays if he can get that many rebounds. I don’t get it Ernie.
You guys missed the boat at ESPN Zone. Management was giving millie mill and I free drinks. Then at 10 everyone took off their clothes and danced on the tables. I was glad our Wizards Pom Pom girls joined in but sorry you guys missed it. Maybe next time.

I think a “Boston Celtic” makeover is going to happen when free agency opens. I remember Ainge and Rivers getting blasted during the 07 Draft…then KG arrived and……..

i refuse to believe that the wizard girls danced on table without their clothes *sense the jealousy*. i’m from australia….it is economically unfeasible to go…boo hoo hoo.
rick – i think you can get a max of 3 million for the pick

wizards_fusion, I saw what Grifon said. It wouldn’t have worked. I may be old but I still know what real ones feel like.
It was actually millie mill’s party (aka Steve).
You’ll never know for sure, will you wiz123?

There is a reason why the spurs are year in year out contenders. We just have to wait and see what our GM is going to work out through trade and or free agency. I was bartending to night just like I was on lottery night and each night I’ve had to go in the walk in cooler shut the door and scream at the top of my lungs………………..unfreakingbeleivable No Dajuan Blair

I believe it’s two years in a row that the Wiz “sold” a second round draft pick. Nothing in return except for cash.

Every GM has strengths and weaknesses; Ernie made a good trade for Miller — if you agree with him that “we can compete with anyone.” His intention, obviously, is to compete for the Eastern Conference Title. This year.
This year. And what if that doesn’t work? Or doesn’t even come near working? Then what? Miller is expiring. Do we let him go? That amounts to wasting the very rare chance to get a potential star in the draft (5th pick). At that point Mike will be 30; you’re not going to rebuild around him.
As to trading pick #32, I think that’s about the dumbest thing a GM can do, frankly. It’s the same talent level as late first round, and you don’t have to guarantee the guy’s salary. Along with high first round picks, high second round picks are the most valuable free assets a team has. You earn them by losing 63 games. Throwing an asset like that away for a little cash… I don’t know what to say.

Ernie wasn’t the only one to pass on Dejuan Blair — 1/2 the GMs in the league did. I’m pretty sure that in retrospect that will look like a mistake, but you can’t point the finger at Ernie when everyone else did the same thing.
In this kind of situation, mostly I feel for the kid. Dejuan Blair is an exceptionally nice kid; he must be pretty cast down — or, more likely, pretty generally emotional: after all, he is going to play in the NBA and for a very good team. If things work out, he can make more money over 5 years as a 2d round pick then he would have being picked late in Round 1.
So… why was Blair picked so late? Knees? The same thing happened to Leon Powe. Everyone was worried about his knees. But no one has mentioned Leon Powe’s knees in the last 3 years!

One thing Ernie has definitely done — he has put himself on the line.
Either we have excellent success this year, or he is fired.

Actually, we could have taken Blair and still had another roster spot open.
Pollin is slow to pull the trigger on his employees. I don’t think EG is going anywhere for a while.
It will be interesting to see what big guy we get and whether it will be by trade or FA.

a couple points:
1) No way is Ernie getting fired.
2) The Spurs are good every year because of Tim Duncan.
3) I agree that second round picks are valuable, but they generally take a few years to develop. Look at ours: Andray, Dominic, even Arenas. Since we already have several developing 2nd round picks, I can see the sense in this trade. Why get another project player when the aim is to win RIGHT NOW. With Butler in his prime and Arenas and Jamison waning, we need to add an established player (big man) through free agency this year. And the cash will help us to do that.

Neal I hope you and Millie (Steve) had a great time with the Pom Pom girls
It sounds like you two had a much better time than the rest of us lol.
I understand the need for getting a veteran big. We have a 13 man roster. Had we drafted “someone” lol at 32 we still would have had an open roster spot for said veteran big.
I think Ernie maybe did answer the Phone Neal and in turn missed his boat. lol

With so many guards I would expect a trade over just signing a free agent. You never know though. Ernie is like a bear in the wild. You never know which way he will go.

How can we add anybody through free agency, Rick? We’re already over the luxury tax.
If you add someone and pay him e.g. $5m, then you pay another $5m into the luxury tax fund. So you are paying $10m for a $5m guy. You want to do that?
We can add a big guy via a trade, otherwise *everything* costs double — including a round 2 pick, btw, which is probably why we passed.

With the trade numbers almost even the only real money we saved for this year is the 2.7 mil we would have paid the 5th pick. I see a trade in our future to get said veteran big.
Comment from GrifonRacing

Never thought of that Tom. Second round pick would cost double too. Maybe Ernie is planning to go with a 14 man roster again for financial reasons.

hey last nights draft was terrific somehow i knew ricky rubio was going to fall the #5 especially after the thunder selected harden, anyways i say a report the said ricky’s father said ricky might stay in Spain from two or three more years a hope the wovles can get a deal done with his spanish team i’d love to see him on the court next season, going back to my previous comment about the East especially now that the Cavs acquired Shaq and the Magic acquired Carter and even the Hawks acquiring Crawford, the East is getting stronger i truly believe for the Wizards to have a change no doubt were a playoff team but a real change to become the Eastern Conference Champs or at least go to the Conference finals Ernie has to get rid of Deshawn, Mike James, and Blatche plus i don’t know what big men free agents are availiable but we need help down low gaurding ShaQ and Howard no disrepect to Haywood, McGee or Blatche but get real they have no chance against those guys and they will caught us huge match-up problems especially in the play-offs Ernie please were hungery for a title p.s. i’d love to be a consel for the Wizards i know my grammer and spelling isn’t to great lol but i kno the game of basketball we need help down low hopefully you’ll be able to find something, that is 4 the day ittyl
