Draft Week is Here

5:32 AM EDT….A big hello from your humble BLOGCASTER Dave Johnson  and from my partner Glen Consor as we get set for Thursday’s draft…Once again we will take you inside the DRAFT ROOM… I will be blogging in the room with SportsWiz as the draft goes down….we have had a lot of fun the last three years and I hope you help spread the word that this will be the place to really know what is happening…..Obviously we will not be giving out information that would compromise the team but we have been able to get a real indication of what is going on—and we have been able to get reaction from President Ernie Grunfeld and his others.

As for the question about the who the Wizards will take—just don’t know…..I think there are too many variables and yes I think a trade is possible but the pick will not just be given away….With Flip Saunders last week and he told a great story about Kevin Garnett with the fifth pick in what was supposed to be a four player draft…I don’t see the next Garnett out there but it is what makes the draft fun–just never know who we will be talking about in a few years….on the subject of Saunders–did says he has been pleased with the off season workouts of the current players especiallyAndray Blatche…..

On today’s workout schedule:

UPDATE: A few small changes to the workout schedule today. Below are the five participants.

Tyrese Rice G Boston College Chesterfield, VA 6’0”/183 lbs.
Nick Calathes G Florida Winter Park, FL 6’5”/185 lbs.
Sergii Gladyr G Ukraine Mykolayiv, Ukraine 6’6”/190 lbs.
Ryan Ayers SG/SF Notre Dame Blue Bell, PA 6’7”/210 lbs.
Alex Ruoff SG West Virginia Spring Hill, FLA 6′6″/220 lbs

Blatche has been working out with Arenas. That’s some serious commitment.

Mike James, Etan Thomas, 5th pick for…

Hughes, Jefferies, Chandler(or I hope Lee). That sounds good to me. Any combo as long as we get Hughes back.!!!!!!

Great to hear good things about Andray’s workouts.

As to the guys working out, Rice is projected round 2 if at all; Calathes will be in Greece next year, Gladyr is a young kid whom lots of people like *a lot* but will likely be a 2d rounder if picked. The other guys aren’t on draft boards anywhere I can find.

From DraftExpress today:

Minnesota is “targeting Washington’s #5 pick, but are only offering some combination of Randy Foye, Mike Miller and the #18 pick, which probably won’t get it done.”

They are “holding firm on not putting Kevin Love on the table.”

(note: They want the pick so that they can bundle it with their #6 and trade up to #2 in order to draft Rubio.)

Continuing: “The Wizards have been bombarded with trade offers … but it’s not a given that they will decide to trade the pick. If Rubio is on the board, all indications are that the Wizards would take him, and worst comes to worse, deal with the repercussions of him staying in Europe for another year or two until his buyout situation gets resolved. There aren’t many teams that are higher on Rubio’s upside than Washington.”

The rookie salary slot at #5 is apparently insufficient to deal w/ Rubio’s buyout. Gettin’ interesting!

If Love were in the trade, btw, I’d do it in a minute. He’s a lot better than anyone available at #5.

Welcome Back Dave. Now that you are back I know everything is about to start jumping. 3 more days until it all starts once again :)

I wonder why Minnesota would want to trade away one of their best players? Mike Miller’s contract does expire after next season. Still past Al Jefferson and Kevin Love not much really there. It’s looking more and more like Rubio will be playing overseas next season. Would they really want to draft a pick and stash guy? Ernie might be looking at Rubio as a pick and stash guy. Rubio’s buy out sounds like it’s getting messy and some are now saying he might fall to us or farther. Apparently the team isn’t budging off his 6million buy out. I think this whole thing is going to get very interesting Thursday.

@ sharpsburg23

If the Wiz get Larry Hughes back, you can kiss Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood goodbye within a year (when their contracts are up) or sooner. Is this what you want? Do you know what you’re saying?

You can’t keep everyone because the Wiz will go way over the salary cap.

@ the draft

Memphis at 2 and Washington at 5 are the two critical spots in the first round. Memphis has needs in all positions except where Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo play (SF/SG?). I love the fact that the Grizzlies front office is torn among 3 guys: Rubio, Thabeet, and Curry.

If Rubio falls to 5, I would draft him and either deal him this offseason (to purge bad contracts) or hold his rights like the Navarro situation. Rubio and his agent Fagen are turning into the “2009 NBA Draft’s Most Hated”. Both of these guys needs to stop talking and start doing.

In times of uncertainty, I believe most GMs stick with the basics and take guys they know have proven themselves in at least 1 year of collegiate ball. Rubio is the sexy pick but not necessarily the smartest pick. I would not be surprised if Sacramento picks another PG other than Rubio with the 4.

Washington can do no wrong at the 5 unless Ernie drafts Jordan Hill. I don’t see Hill as a successor to Jamison nor do I see Hill as better than Blatche.

ESPN’s “Draft-buzz roundup: What we’re hearing” is saying that Etan Thomas contract is required to be part of any trade for the #5 pick.
Tyrke Evans looks like he is going #4 to Sacramento. “Flynn was at the top of the Kings’ board coming into the workout, but Evans emerged at the top. His physicality was just too much for Flynn, Curry and Calathes to handle. As one Kings scout said, “It was a man beating up boys.”
1. Griffin
2. Thabeet
3. ?
4. Tyreke Evans
I guess the big question for the Wizards is does the organization want Gilbert to play the point or shooting guard?
Hey Sportswiz, what position does Flip want Gilbert to play the majority of the time?

I still have admiration for Larry Hughes but I am not sure I would want him back with us. I definitely don’t want Jared Jeffries back. This is a new beginning not a reunion.
The fact that we have a lot of trade offers I feel the ball is in our court and EG should be patient all the way up to a few minutes before we select. If there is a deal we can’t refuse it will surface.
Other than that I see us going with Harden or Curry. I feel if we take Jordan Hill it is to trade not unless we don’t keep Dray.
I just don’t want the Wizards to do anything real dumb.
The Minnesota rumor is something to think about with Miller and Foye. But of course they are lokking for us to take Cardinal and Madsen if we give James and Thomas.
I am not just sure I want to give up on Dray.
as for the players coming in to workout today I have always liked Tyrese Rice.

I can’t remember a draft like this! where everything is up in the air after the first pick. I mean Flynn could go 4th or he could go 13th; Rubio could go 2d or he could go undrafted!

We could wind up with Harden after all. Or we could be part of a multi-player, multi-pick deal that reshapes our roster.

Man, this is weird!

Larry Hughes last 5 years scoring average:
22
15
14

It ain’t going up. It’s called getting old and moving on with life. At 14 million a year I think Ernie did a heck of a job not matching that horrible contract he signed with Cleveland.

Everyone keeps saying “where do we want to play Gilbert shooting guard or point guard?” like this draft pick will somehow magically impact that…
I mean, are you all nuts?
Do you really think that some 19/20 year old kid is gonna come in & start pushing line up changes around?
Ridiculous…
Draft the best available player on the board & work from there!

Comment from jmpalomo
Time June 22, 2009 at 12:30 PM

The only reason I can think of for Ernie to trade for Larry Hughes 13.6 million one year contract is if the Wiz are going to make a run at one of the Big Free Agents at the end of the year. LBJ, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade.
Think about it:
Put one of these three guys with Gilbert, Caron and who we get in return by trading Antawn (this is a done deal as far as I’m concerned- too many teams want him bad) plus if we don’t trade the #5 pick and get one of the point guards. We would be set!
I might be dreaming but it’s a good dream.

Comment from Tom Mandel

M2 is correct, IMO. The goal is just to improve the roster. The coaching staff will play the right guys. If someone comes in and blooms in a hurry, so much the better — but you really can’t plan on that.

Yes Tom this is weird. EG is probably cool as a cucumber. We are becoming full of anxiety. So many rumors. What are we going to do. What are we not going to do. Chad Ford (ESPN) in his recent mock has a drafting James Harden. NBADraft recent mock has us drafting Curry.
Rumor is DWade wants to sign an extension. I expect Kobe and LBJ to sign extensions this summer.

Comment from jmpalomo
Time June 22, 2009 at 1:24 PM

I can see Kobe resigning but I definitely cannot see LBJ resigning if they have the same roster.
Take LBJ out of their lineup and they pretty much stink.
Not one current All Star (please don’t count Mo Williams who the Cavs and Lebron had to beg the NBA to put on the all star team).
If you take LBJ out of their lineup I probably would take any other teams roster than theirs.

Tom M. – I’m not mad at any blogger. I simply have nothing to add to the discussions about the draft because I have very little knowledge of the draft prospects and honestly don’t care to know anything about them until they become a Wizard. I don’t want to keep repeating myself about various current Wizards and their up/down side, or how I feel they MIGHT perform next season. I’m really only interested in commenting about what happens on the court. However, I am watching the blog and reading some very entertaining stuff.

Ok so I went on ESPN.com and saw on the rumors page the following titles for today: “Picks 2 and 5 and who wants them”, “Wizards Eye Hughs and Jeffris”, and “Finances not an issue for Wizards”……I would really like to know what the first rumor page says (but since I am not subscribed to Insider I can’t!)…..I’m fine with the 3rd rumor, but the 2nd one about Hughs and Jeffris scares me……The Wizards need veterans who can help this team when a championship……last time I checked, didnt we skip re-signing these players back in the day because they were’nt helping the team? What makes EG think they will help us now? maybe he thinks getting them will help us in free agency next year, or he’s just insane if he trades guys to get Jeffris and Hughs IMO.

Comment from Wizfan4life
Time June 22, 2009 at 2:42 PM

I think the Wizards also need to look at possibly trading guys whose contracts expire next year for a late 1st round pick to a team that has lots of cap room…..because the free agency market this summer looks pretty good as well

There is an ESPN Zone event on draft night? Interesting.

For the ultimate fan, how about
1. grabbing a Wizards jersey,
2. jumping on Bolt Bus in Chinatown Wednesday night for $25 (2 blocks from Verizon Center),
3. riding up to NYC’s Port Authority in less than 5 hours,
4. walking or riding the subway down to 33th St. and 7th Ave (aka Madison Square Garden),
5. camping out overnight under the MSG rotunda entrance
6. getting laughed at by on-lookers wondering what you’re doing around 7:30 am Thursday
7. checking to make sure you don’t have halitosis around 8:30 am
8. getting excited around 10:30 am when the MSG box office is about to open for business
9. running to the box office window at 11 am sharp and demanding 1 ticket to the NBA draft that night
10. paying $15 for the ticket
11. wondering what to do in NYC for 8 hours before the draft at 11:05 am
12. crying and wishing the Wizards have the #1 pick so you know who the team is drafting and didn’t have to go through steps 1-11

I’m putting odds at 80,000:1 that Tom M. WONT be at the draft live. My personal odds are at about 2,000:1 – LOL. It is very tempting to be in the crowd “booing” the Knicks’ selection while David Stern acts snarky. This is way better than watching the Red Sox.

From everything I’ve heard the past few weeks, most experts believe the Wizards are trading this pick……some sources even think the Wizards are trading to get the number 2 or 3 pick to get Rubio……personally, I think that’s a bad move…..we don’t need to get a young guy, we need veteran experience for this team!

Comment from Tom Mandel

wizards_fusion — you *had me going* until the part about “camp out all night.” :)

I’ve been thinking and thinking about draft night — but in the end, I can’t drive the 250 miles round trip. :(

But, I hope there’s a good crowd, someone with a video camera, and that we put up links on the Wizards facebook page — really this *blog* should have a facebook page come to think of it.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time June 22, 2009 at 2:55 PM

wizfan4life — you get your draft picks *for free* (well… cheap in nba terms; you do have to pay them). It’s much harder to acquire an excellent veteran. If they’re good they’re making good money, you have to give up someone good usually in order to get someone good, and so forth.

In other words, the draft and trading for a veteran are 2 very different things. And… teams that draft well do well. Every veteran was a rookie once, right?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time June 22, 2009 at 2:56 PM

Getabig — understood, and I’m relieved. I’m also happy to hear Flip’s good report on Andray’s workouts. If everything works out, you’ll get a photo of me eating a keyboard (as long as I don’t have to eat a mouse…). :)

Tom, I think this blog should definately have a facebook page….think of how many Wizards fans there are out there that don’t even realize the Wizards have their own blog page! I can only think of one exception where a team got a great veteran player for a mediocre player…..the Lakers getting Pau Gasol from the Grizzlies…..sadly I think GMs have seen what a trade like that will do to a team like Memphis, so I don’t think teams will be interested in making a trade of that magnitude with the Wizards this week :( …….I do agree that to become a solid veteran, you have to develop over time, but I don’t think the Wizards are in waiting mode anymore…..they’ve seen our young guys develop into more mature players, and the one thing the Wizards are focused on right now is winning!

Comment from neal

I’m going unless something happens that makes the draft anti-climatic for us. Millie, are we still stuck at only 5 commitments?

Hughes is 30 years old and injury prone. I can’t imagine $13.6 in salaries we should trade for him, even though his salary would be off the books in a year. I loved him while he was here but we can’t relive the past.

I can’t believe EG is saying that taking Thomas is a precondition of any trade. That’s a poison pill. Moreover, the ability to dump his salary after next year is an asset for the Wiz, as Tom has pointed out.

Drafting Rubio at #5 is too risky, for more than one reason. Whether he ever shows up, and whether he has that high a skill set.

Ernie, get the phone!

@ Tom M:

The camping out is actually a very real part of getting tickets to the Draft at MSG. Here’s why:

In the last couple of years, a sponsor (this year it is EA Sports) works with the league to hold a pre-sale on draft tickets for people that signed up for some “NBA Insider” type club. The pre-sale tickets went on sale June 11 at 10 am EST for $15. Guess what – when 10 am rolled around, the ticket brokers crashed the system (as usual) and no fan with a regular Internet connection got in. I called MSG’s box office and a very nice lady tried on her end and she couldn’t even do it. I assumed the tickets were already sold-out.

When 12:30 rolled around, I checked the site and the tickets said “sold out”. I assumed Ticketmaster fixed the problem and relentless people (that didn’t have to work – or maybe their job was to click “refresh” until it worked) got the tickets. I was not too happy but that’s how it goes.

The WaMu Theatre in MSG is where the draft will be held. The ground level is for draftees and their family and friends with large round tables. The back mezzaine area is for the fans and people with tickets. It is a very tight and dark area. I’m guessing that it can only hold about 300 fans total. If 200 tickets were pre-sold, then only the first 100 people camping outside MSG will get it. Considering that New York has over 8 million people, the first 100 is going to be tough to break unless you get there really early. It does not shock me if people are waiting there NOW and trying to sell the $15 ticket for at least 10x the price, which is what I saw on eBay and StubHub.

So for those that are going – a big GOOD LUCK!

I heard like 100 more different draft combinations this morning. Here’s my latest guess:

1. Griffin – Clips
2. Thabeet – Grizz
3. Harden – Thunder
4. Evans – Kings
5. Curry – Wizards

From Michael Lee – Antawn Jamison wants DeMar DeRozan; saying something like this kid reminds him of Vince Carter.

At 19 years old, DeRozan does kind of remind me of a 19 year old Vince (Vince was skinny as a pole early in college). Vince wasn’t a good shooter but he worked at it.

Floyd, I’d love to have David Lee but the salaries aren’t close. He’s a restricted FA at $2.7M. James will make $6.5M and Songaila $4.5M. The only way to make that work is to talk the Knicks into a sign and trade deal such that they pay Lee within 15% of the total of the James and Songaila salaries. You willing to pay Lee that much AND give up the #5 pick?

Comment from GrifonRacing

David Lee only makes 2.7mil? Wow now That’s a bargain! Why are they thinking of trading him. After all the brilliant Mr. Thomas is gone lol.

Floydbt… that would be a hard choice between Harden and Curry. Neal, Curry is a player a lot like his Dad and built pretty much the same. Harden has some beef to him. (actually he reminds me a lot of Gilbert). Harden and Curry both have good handles but Curry is more the pure shooter where Harden is a shooter/slasher.

I like the idea of drafting Harden, Curry, or maybe even Evans if we use the pick. I don’t like the idea of Rubio, Hill, or Thabeet. Rubio maybe if Ernie is looking to “stash” and can find another way to free up a roster spot. I Don’t want to give up the 2nd pick in the 2nd round. That’s as good as a first rounder minus the salary guarantee. Dreams of Amare, Bosh, Lee, Miller all dancing around in our heads. What a great time of year.

I’m a bit confused from the last couple of posts:

Why would the Thunder need a Center? They already have Krstic, who was a very good offensive center for the Nets before his 2 knee injuries and his stint in Russia before coming back to the NBA for a couple of months last season. Also, they have their “out of position” Center with Nick Collison, a player they kept from the Sonic days and is an “energy guy”. Plus, they have Robert Swift – the 7-1 center with more tats than Cherokee Parks. The Thunder is going with a guard and his name is most likely James Harden. The Westbrook/Harden backcourt makes sense to me to compliment Jeff Green, Durant, and Krstic. I give the nod to Harden because he has more “meat” than Curry and he can more easily win the starter job away from Desmond Mason.

Why would the Grizzlies need a Point Guard? Didn’t they draft Mike Conley, Jr. 2 years ago for that reason? Jaric is 6-7 but he handles the ball well (think of him as the Serbian version of Hedo). The more I look at the Grizzlies roster, the more I get confused on what they need. I mean, they don’t need a Center if they trust Marc Gasol (who had a very good NBA rookie year). They don’t need Harden or Curry if they feel that O.J. Mayo is doing a good job at SG. And they certainly don’t need a SF because Rudy Gay is the only awesome player they have. If I were Memphis, I would put Curry highest on the list and then Thabeet next and then Harden. But, it seems the draft boards are pointing to Thabeet and the Grizzlies NBA blog has fans not having a darn clue. For reasons unexplained, the Grizzlies fans want Tyreke Evans.

The reality is that Harden will be gone by 6th pick and Curry will be gone by 9th pick.
