9:11 AM EST…..Dave Johnson checking in  from OKC…with the Sonics now the Thunder it is like we have a third “west” coast trip  becuase now we are clumping the Spurs, Mavericks, and T-Wolves on one swing and it is just as long as a west coast trip just not as far away from home…we wish DeShawn Stevenson the best in his recovery from back surgery..as he was struggling with his shot early on we were wondering if something was bothering him….he loves to play and plays through pain like he did last year when his knee kept swelling up to the size of a grapefruitCaron Butler  is with us but will not start and not sure if he will play because of his strained hamstring…Wizards are 5-9 with a lineup of James, Butler, Songaila, McGuire and Jamison…and here is to the kids….Dominic McGuire will start tonight at 2 guard and he really showcased his passing with 9 assists against the Hawks….JaVale McGee handled the pick and roll defense better and received more playing time and ended up with his big night…BLOGCAST starts at 8….we welcome all new bloggers as we connect with you court side…..on the radio on ESPN 980 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia …92.7 FM in Southern Maryland….1370 AM in Baltimore and on great affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke…..and of course online….you can listen while you do your taxes

7:15 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in from the Ford Center…no Caron Butler tonight so the Wizards will go with Mike James, Dominic McGuire, Darius Songaila, Antawn Jamison, Andray Blatche…..Thunder will not have Kevin Durant and Jeff Green….so Thunder will have Russell Westbrook, Kyle Weaver, Nenad Kristic, Nick Collison, Thabo Sefolosha….

Deshawn is a true warrior. I wish him a very speedy recovery. Caron should sit until he is fully healed. No sense rushing back and possibly injuring the hamstring more.

With Dominic, Crit, and JaVale we have a very exciting young group. We have a good shot at a win tonight. I’m sorry Mr. Green and Mr. Durant won’t be suiting up but we can certainly identify with the injury thang.

Go Wiz

regardless of his ability to coach this team, i really like tapscott. in my opinion he is doing the “right” job by losing as many games as possible :-)

i like pat ewing, but i think it is risky to go with an unproven coach with so much else up in the air this summer. i think a choice like flip saunders is better and much more likely to happen. my #1 pick would be jeff van gundy if he can be convinced to take the job.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 4, 2009 at 12:20 PM

When we talk about the “young group” lets not forget to include Andray — he is almost a year younger than Dominic, and more than a year younger than Nick. In fact, he is only 16 months older than JaVale!

Comment from Jaba
Time March 4, 2009 at 1:28 PM

“you can listen while you do your taxes”….Haha! My taxes…That’s exactly what I’m doing right now! Hello from Germany! Hopefully I’ll be finished with this by gametime! GO WIZARDS!! So, I guess if Dominic plays the 2, Andray will finally be starting again! We definetly need a huge game from him (and from everybody else, of course) if we want to compensate for Caron’s absence. I’m also hoping for good things from Javaris and Nick Young! Please, Nick, come to play tonight!!!
Is this correct: we still need six more wins if we don’t want this to be our worst season ever?

Comment from Jaba
Time March 4, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Woud love to have Flip Saunders as coach!

hello dave and blog crew,

its good too hear stevenson is getting the surgery. might as well fix it now and hopefully will get rid of the pain for next year. i heard he doesnt like getting surgery and thats why he has been playing with pain forever!

ill try to keep up with the game while im at my evening class tonight. sometimes its hard when the teacher keeps looking at me. lol. GO Wizards!!!

Comment from GlingGling
Time March 4, 2009 at 1:42 PM

This is a critical game, it may help determine our lottery pick. That said I’m looking forward to the young guys. I’d like to see Dominic get more aggressive on offense, he is definitely pass first.

I’ll be in class but record the game and flip through it. Good luck Wizards, Good luck Thunder.

Comment from neal
Time March 4, 2009 at 2:08 PM

I agree, Rick. There are several excellent proven coaches available. Surely we can attract one of them. I don’t think Ewing has even been a principle assistant yet.

Comment from neal
Time March 4, 2009 at 2:14 PM

If I were a coach considering the head job in Washington I would make it a condition that the team not be torn apart to get under the salary cap next year.

Comment from GlingGling
Time March 4, 2009 at 2:32 PM

I second Neal’s condition. I know people want change, but it’s a little early to be tearing down the house. There are many teams that go through terrible seasons. Based on Ernie’s reluctance to trade players away thus far hopefully that means he’d like to keep our core intact.

Comment from neal
Time March 4, 2009 at 5:26 PM

Actually, I don’t think I’d make the Big Three impervious to trade. Just not make changes

Comment from neal
Time March 4, 2009 at 5:33 PM

JUST NOT MAKE CHANGES TO GET UNDER THE SALARY CAP. I don’t mind a trade of one of the big three if it makes sense for other reasons. But let’s get back value for value. Not just a cheaper player.

Comment from Rick
Time March 4, 2009 at 5:34 PM

i understand the reluctance to breakup arenas, butler, and jamison (on purpose). but in reality, they have already been broken up by injuries.

i think the simple fact is that the entire organization has pined its hopes on Arenas. he must be able to return to his pre-injury level of play. If he is an all-league player again, then many options will open up for us. if not, it will be many years before we can even think about competing for a title.

Comment from GlingGling
Time March 4, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Rick, I think your statement is pretty accurate, at least the latter part. If Arenas cannot return to his previous level this team will be hobbled for as long as his contract.

At this point I can’t say how much his returning to 28ppg/6ast/5reb/2stl will help in opening up options for us. I couldn’t hurt though, he is a sensational player at that level of production.

Comment from Rick
Time March 4, 2009 at 6:07 PM

well one big option is that it makes him and his contract tradeable. right now it’s just dead weight.

Comment from neal
Time March 4, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Yep, Gling and Rick. We’re riding with Gil for 5 more years, for better or worse.

Although I don’t think we can avoid going over the luxury tax limit next year, the year after that I expect that we’ll be forced into that straight jacket again.

In order to resign Haywood and McGuire after next season we will have to use all the savings from expiration of the Thomas and James contracts. There will be no money for a Knight in Shining Armor to save us. If we are to sign our draftees, there won’t be a roster spot either.

So we’re going with what we got (plus draftees), for better or worse.

Comment from 2stepsaway
Time March 4, 2009 at 7:21 PM

Best wishes to Stevenson…

I have confidence in the young bunch… they play much better when they are 80 – 100% on the court.. It is like they punk out/punk down when the vets are running along side them…

yes, McGuire’s offense will improve. He does need to take more shots…

I love Crit. He is quick, thinks on his feetd. Now if only he would shoot the ball more than he passes, esp when he is right at the basket…

I say keep the team as it is… Yes, Boston bombed then bought their players (PJ Brown was my fav :-) ), which to their championship. We need a tried & proven leader & we gotta give them something to work with….

Be back @ game time!

Comment from ChenierFan
Time March 4, 2009 at 7:21 PM

What’s this nonsense about Pat Ewing becoming the head coach of the Wiz? He isn’t even a very good assistant. I’m sure Ernie will make a good pick. I wouldn’t mind Flip Saunders.

Good luck to Deshawn on his back surgery. I hope he has as good a surgeon as Darius did. Look forward to seeing him back at full strength next year. WHen you think about it, we were really missing 3 of the 5 starters all year long.

Let’s hope the Wiz play with some hustle tonight. If it is true that Green and Durant are out tonight, the Wiz (at least on paper) should be able to bring home the bacon.

Win #15 (and counting) comes tonight!

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 4, 2009 at 10:35 PM

2STEP,

You hit it on the head…we didn’t get back in this because of AJ, and we blew the game because he became a “go-to-guy”…I saw more energy (jumping up and down POUTING) out of him when he didn’t get a call, than I saw out of him all night.
Going to AJ and Mike James AT THE END, when they didn’t get us BACK into the game, and basically killed the momentum did us in.

AND WATCHING AJ stand behind Collinson, etc on their offensive rebounds was something to behold. BUT WHY DON’T WE HEAR about “his” deficiencies…ugggh,

How many games are left? I can’t bear too much more…The man that decides who goes into the game (i can not and will not call him any type of coach, regardless of his mission) really needs to take one for the team and just resign.

Comment from neal
Time March 4, 2009 at 10:36 PM

Too many low % shots by Young, but most of all it was poor defense.

I wish I had a nickle for every time Jamison created a problem on defense because he was slow to get back because he was whining to a referee. Why don’t the coaches call him on that? Is he above being “coached”.

We are last in the league in defensive rebounding, but do very well offensive rebounding. We have McGuire, McGee, Jamison, and Blatche. So is the problem coaching or effort? I know one player who is a lot more interested in offensive rebounds, but that’s not the whole story.

Comment from r55
Time March 4, 2009 at 10:45 PM

So let me get this straight Jamison is getting the blame for this game??? Jamison became our go to guy thats weird because my count he took 4 shots when he came back while nick took 6 and turned it over twice…wow ive never really post on this blog but the way jamison becomes the scapegoat for every game is ridiculous but whatever

Comment from dcbutler357

Comment from dcbutler357

Basically, just like the players have to get a feel for the game and adjust to it, so does the person that sends in the players…approx 24 games left, YES!!!!(as I drop the microphone and walk away)

Comment from wizardsallday
Time March 4, 2009 at 10:54 PM

How i would like to blame NY and AJ for this game down the end but they was only try to do what the do best and that is score. What really to me lost this game is the 3rd peird and the Defence (nothing new).

Comment from neal
Time March 4, 2009 at 10:54 PM

I just looked it up. Antawn has a lot more defensive rebounds than offensive ones. So I was very wrong about that. I stand behind my comment regarding his whining.

The reason we lost the game was team defense, not any one player. Not even Young’s playing individually, rather than with his teammates.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 4, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Make that 21 games (EVEN BETTER)

Comment from r55
Time March 4, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Well judging from your post you basically put the blame on jamison shoulders i dont think he became the go to guy he came back into the game at 7:05 left in the 4th quarter and didnt take a shot until 4:41 left in the quarter was he perfect no but he was hardly the go to guy

Comment from wizardsallday
Time March 4, 2009 at 11:03 PM

r55 u are right about jamison not taking a shot but it was because Oklahoma City was making sure that he did not recieve the ball. So this to me lead Ny to believe he had to carry the offense.

Comment from ChenierFan
Time March 4, 2009 at 11:12 PM

The guard play was awful tonight. Nick could not get it going. MIke was a non-factor. Javaris wasn’t agressive enough. The Wiz allowed the depleted OKC team to shoot 50% from the field.

I think this is my fourth or fifth time writing this, but why does Andray spend is time wandering around the 3 point line on offense? He needs to be around the hoop to get some offensive boards and maiking cuts to the hoop like Darius does. Is this a coaching decision or what?

I’ve got to give Tapscott credit. He does provide fodder for the bloggers. I’m not sure what kind of BS he will spout tonight or tomorrow to throw some (or a few) Wizard players under the bus, but this entire loss, as have been many others, is on his head.

As the Wizards were getting out rebounded, Tap chose to go small and had essentially three guards in the game; not on one occasion, but twice. He choose to rest AJ at the most inappropriate times. He seemed to forget that McGee is on the team; he played Mike James for extended minutes when the guy was having a really bad night…no offense, no defense, no leadership.

This was one more in a long list of games that have been lost by the coaches. I’m certain that Tap will talk about energy and concentration and whatever other BS intangibles he can think of to place the blame on the players and deflect the blame from himself.

I played and coached for many years and I know a poor coach when I see one. Tap is the kind of coach that I would absolutely know that I would beat almost every time. I could almost guarantee that he would do enough stupid things that his players would not be able to overcome and even if I had an inferior team, we would win. This guy is a farce.

Tap is a lawyer. In the legal profession, just as in the music profession, being “first chair” means that you can lead. Believe me, Tap is not only not first chair, he would not even have a seat at the table.

Once again, the guys played hard. Some of the players were not at their best, but that was due more to not placing them in a position to succeed rather than them not being successful. AJ was great on offense…he had another triple double (points scored, rebounds, points allowed), but I want him on my team. Blatche was the most effective Wizard on the court. Darius was solid. Everyone else played well enough for the Wiz to have registered a win…but we didn’t…wonder why?

The best NBA coaches have been in the trenches. They know what it is like to play against very large, very quick, very intense athletes who are making a lot of $ because they want to, and know how to, beat your butt. If you haven’t been there, you have no business telling those who are there how to play. Tap has never even been close to “there”.

ChenierFan -Q. “why does Andray spend (h)is time wandering around the 3 point line on offense”

A. Because that’s what Tap has instructed him to do.

More stupid coaching by Tap

The entire league (exception Wizards) understands that Nick Young is a scoring machine. There is no time that the guy touches the ball that the opposition does not immediately double-team (sometimes triple-team) him. It would be nice if the coaching staff would provide instruction to both Nick and the rest of the Wiz players how best to defeat that double/triple team.

Which of the Wizard coaches does any of the bloggers believe ever faced a double or triple team? LOL

We really should have won that one. Playing Antawn and Darius against Krystic and Collison isn’t going to work at any time in any game. Could Crittenton have had a good game? Who knows. He never got enough consecutive minutes to find out. Why was Juan off the bench before Crit? Must be a 7 game thing. Thank you Dominic for being our rebound and assist leader tonight. And thank you for playing with the heart of a lion every single night. It’s very sad that we have the guys to get the job done, but, don’t. It’s not the “guys” Abe. Time for Ernie’s buddy to bow out. This is really getting painful to watch. At least we are now in the Lottery lead?

Gabbo… who would you like to see as coach next season (please let there be a new one). I know about the Ewing pick, but, past that. How would you feel about a guy like Jeff Van Gundy? I think Avery Johnson and Gilbert would clash. I like Flip Saunders but I don’t think he would be the best fit here.

This is the key…if you’re a NY, you’re taught to pass the ball when more than one man is on you. When you’re AJ, you still try to shoot it over three people and nothing is said….Of course, AJ is being put in a bad position, because he was no match for Collison, and if you noticed, he switched out on picks and left a smaller man on his man…He has heart, but neither he or Caron can get on the court and take over a game, the way mgmt or everyone else would have liked for them too (has reality kicked in yet??) NAW, because all they can say is our youth this, our youth that….so what’s wrong with saying our veteran didn’t do this or didn’t do that. Call a spade a spade. You can call it blame, you can say I said whatever, I stand by what I said, because I saw it on the t.v. set…lol…and at the end, they put in AJ and MJ to close out the game, after others fought hard to get us back into the game. I didn’t say how many times he shot I noted what I perceived. I will call out any player any time, no matter who it is, that’s the beauty of blogging. Speak your mind and move on. Get over it, this is a business.

lol…like I said earlier 21 more games of this mess and we can call in the sweeper!!!

dcbutler, I share your frustration.

Grifon, I’ll take the guy who has been in the trenches every time. That experience is worth more than any thing else. For my $, I’ll take Patrick.

We have a soft team and Patrick and Zo (if we would hire them) would provide the fire that is missing. We need a new start…a home-team start. We need to instill some pride in this franchise. Maybe Flip or someone else would be a safer pick, but currently WE STINK, let’s go for it all…hire Patrick and Zo.

DCB… not gonna happen. With this kind of season nobody inside the organization is going to realize anything. Too close to the forest to see the trees. The only thing that typically happens from here on out will be all of the finger pointing. Tapscott has the advantage because he does it so eloquently LOL.

I don’t think either Patrick or Alonso have enough “true” assistant coaching experience to be a head coach (although either of them would be a leap over Tapscott). Has John Thompson taken himself completely out of the Game? If he hasn’t I can’t imagine him not wanting that “one shot” at an NBA head coaching job. Especially “HERE” where everyone loves him. He would obviously hire either Zo or Patrick as his “big man” coach.

I found myself conflicted between wanting the Wizards to win and wanting them to lose. Most of the game I was siding with the Thunder (for lottery purposes only, ok maybe a little because I like Westbrook) but towards the end I thought… wouldn’t it be nice if they won a close game. Oh well.

Give last night’s loss to Nick; in less than 19 minutes he went 3-13, turned it over 2 times, and committed 3 fouls.

Good morning Tom M.

Did you have a chance to watch the game or are you attributing the loss to Nick based soley on the stats?

Comment from Rick
Time March 5, 2009 at 8:29 AM

i watched the game, and I give the loss to Mike James (if i have to pin it on one individual). he is a liability on defense and when he makes no passes and then misses a jumper on the other end (multiple times) it makes me understand why New Orleans was willing to part with him in exchange for an ailing Antonio Daniels.

but we all know, it is the team who lost. can’t say i am upset though, that was an important loss vis-a-vis lottery positioning,

Nick certainly didn’t have a very good game, but, I don’t know that you can blame one player for any loss unless he is shooting baskets at the other team’s goal.

Small ball has always killed this team and last night was no exception. They had 9 more rebounds and pretty much controlled the paint. Collison and Krystic are tall but they aren’t real atheletic. Andray played a fair game, but, way too often it was Antawn and Darius against Collison and Krystic. A little size in the middle may have helped. I heard through the grapevine Pesh was doing cross word puzzles.

The irony of that Rick is we don’t have the worst overall record. I believe the Kings do.

Comment from GrifonRacing

I didn’t complete my thought from above. I think Pesh would have matched up pretty well against either Krystic or Mr. “Tattoo”.

Grifon, Isn’t it too bad that we don’t have any size sitting on the bench that we could have used to get some rebounds?

Like u state Nick did had a bad game but for him to lost the game is over the top. Nick was only try to do what he do best that of course is to score. Yea he may have force some shots and try to create something out of nothing but I give the cerdit to Oklahoma City defense for seal down Nick and Antawn down the end.

The bottom line is we lost for our poor defense, bad coaching, and bad offense down the line (but i guess you can put that with the coach). All of these is nothing new to us so until the year over we have to deal with it.

& Tom M… We/I usually don’t include Dray as a youngin’ because our/my criteria is NBA experience. He could be 20 for all I care, we KNOW what we have in him after 4 seasons…
Crit, NY (for the most part, although I know what we have in NY), Dom & McGee are all guys that the verdict is still out on.
This season (& each passing week in the season) gives us a better & better understanding of those four. I am excited about those four because I’m constantly seeing upsides…
Dray is Dray (Kwame Jr for the most part) & I like him a lot, YES, he should DEFINITELY be a 20/10 guy in this league. Not sure he will be though… ?

Getabig — I watched the whole game, yes. Nick went 3-13 and had 2 turnovers. If those shots (most of which were forced) had been spread around the rest of the team, you would expect to make 6 of them, based on the % of other players’ FGAs. Both his turnovers (from dribbling right into trouble) led to uncontested buckets on the other end. Good enough for you?

I like Nick; he is a nice kid, and he is incredibly gifted athletically. Doesn’t make him an NBA player.

M2 — I understand that Dray has experience; he has one more year under his belt than Nick and Dominic. I put him among the young’uns, because he is part of the future team, the one we’re rebuilding to.

The rotations didn’t help last night either — once again, if Critt and Mike’s minutes had been switched, we might have won the game that way as well. For that matter, if JaVale had played 25 minutes instead of 12.

But, of the guys on the floor, Nick did the most damage to our cause.
