Game Day Milwaukee
2:07 AM EST..Dave Johnson checking in…we just made it to the hotel…let’s face it Friday was just fun..one of the moments we won’t forget in a season filled with many nights we would like to forget….in front of President Obama the Wizards played one of their best games of the season…or was it the best game when you consider the commitment on the boards and the way we moved the ball on offense–eight players in double figures..Bucks lost a tough one in New Orleans last night…have bad memories of being here last time..it was second week of the season and we gave a game away…here’s to another post All-Star break winning streak…..BLOGCAST starts at 8:30—radio and BLOGGING together—on the radio on ESPN 980 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia…92.7 FM in Southern Maryland…1370 AM in Baltimore…and on great affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke.. and online as well.
11:43 AM EST….yes Bridge it is cold here in Milwaukee.. and I really appreciate Slwiz comments about basketball family. I did not know Norm Van Lier or Johnny “Red” Kerr but to say hello to but they were always warm and friendly. Still we are all part of a basketball family and that’s part of what this BLOG is all about..Glenn and I miss bloggers when we don’t hear from them for awhile..players change teams but friendships and professional respect remain…we are saddened at losses of greats like Van Lier and Kerr and happy for success for guys like Roger Mason even though it is with another team…..hey it’s been a tough year—and I picked up the Milwaukee paper this AM and there was something about the economy being bad—but it’s pretty cool that through this technology we can hook up with some friends on a daily basis and actually during games—-we can debate, we can agree, we can disagree, we can share etc…….we are all anxious for the Wizards future to get better and brighter..but for now we just have to enjoy the moment and we can do that because we have our own little basketball family
8:00 EST….Dave Johnson and Glenn here…starters are in…Mike James, Caron Butler, Darius Songaila, Antawn Jamison, Dominic McGuire…Bucks…Ramon Sessions, Luc Mbah Moute, Francisco Elson, Charlie Villanuueva, Richard Jefferson

I think for the first time I may understand a little clearer the phrase “basketball family”.
If it weren’t for the University of Illinois I wouldn’t even be blogging, since Dee did spend several months with the Wizards. The recent news of Johnny “Red” Kerr’s fight against cancer also of the University of Illinois brings home that one of his teams was the Baltimore Bullets. Upon researching this was an ABA team, no relationship to the Baltimore Bullets that are present day Washington Wizards. Also, passing away was Norm Van Lier a Comcast analyst who worked with Kendall Gill also from the University of Illinois. So the tie in to the Wiz is since Glen, Dave, and SportzWiz work with the Wizard media I wonder if you feel these losses and if you ever had a chance to meet these men? Or if this is how you feel about “basketball families” and how they grow and go from town to town, college to college, team to team, or even jobs to jobs? I remember early on in blogging SportzWiz encouraging me to stay a fan of the Wiz even when Dee was let go. For me, attending the “Night of Legends” and seeing not just young men honored but also older ones like 76 year old Johnny “Red” Kerr was a privilege for me. I only wish the best for the basketball family and friends of Mr. Kerr and Mr. Lier. It truly is a tribute to them that their names and reputations bring joy to others outside of their own families.
Tonight is Sacramento and my hope is for a Wiz win. You players just never know whose lives you will touch by your actions or how ealy in your careers you may do so. I know from the blogs that you have touched many this year even with all the losses. Go Wizards Go; keep up the fight!

oops, I was looking at the wrong schedule!! So its Milwaukee tonight…no wonder Bridge is talking about the cold…and yep, Bridge loves her Wiz!! A back to back win would be great!
I hadn’t really followed the Obama campaign too much. The other night he gave the State of the Union Address and I can see why people’s emotions are stirred up by his arrival to the Verizon Center. He’s extremely interested in the nation and its welfare and is working hard to cope with the recession, the war, the economy, the health care needs, and energy. I wonder how he can have so much passion and interest and still not just maintain hope but give hope and confidence. For a nation that has been struggling with emotional trauma this hope brings out the best in folks who are trying to believe! For him to attend the game must have been a stress reliever for him; to choose a struggling team in his nation to possibly get away from struggles for a bit, well, that really says a lot for him to trust his Washington Wiz and his Chicago Bulls players to give him relief and entertainment!! To him it doesn’t matter the wins or losses, the location, he still believes in the people of his nation. And all he asks in return is that people try and help him rebuild and recover from the economic and other national struggles. Man, I never thought I’d blog about stuff like this! The Wiz really responded to him. Their excitement really carried over from the locker room onto the court! Now do it tonight against the Bucks!

Awww – people are all sentimental and stuff 2day…I’m all touched
; families MUST have some type of dysfunction in order to be functional – - I’m just glad that I’m able to be apart of all of this! I know that I have my times of “anger” but most of the time, it’s all out of love. And Sl, I HOPE that you do stay with us because like everyone, you bring a lot!
DJ, I’ll try to come up there to visit you guys personally. Don’t be alarmed – - really – I’m a nice person, and pretty nice to look at (lol), so in the end, it’s nothing but a win-win situation…

Great win yesterday! And since I didn’t get to listen to the game, I loved reading all your comments today!
slwiz – what’s Dee Brown doing these days? Obviously his stint with the Suns didn’t work out, but is he playing at all at the moment?
I’d love to see Pech get some playing time tonight! We need to find out what we have in him. And JCritt deserves more than 12 minutes as well!

I’M PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT THE WIN LAST NIGHT BUT COACH TAPPSCOTT IS THE WORST COACH IN THE LEAGUE. THE WIN THEY GET ARE NOT BECAUSE HE DID A GOOD COACHING JOB BUT BECAUSE HIS PLAYERS GAVE A WINNING EFFORT. I CAN’T FIGURE OUT WHY JUAN DIXON ISN’T GETTING ANY PLAYING TIME AN JAVARIUS IS UNLESS THEY ARE SHOWCASING HIM FOR A POSSIBLE TRADE I CAN’T SEE WHY HE’S GETTING SO MUCH TIME, HE PLAYS AGRESSIVE ON DEFENCE BUT GETS BEAT ALOT. DIXON GETS BEAT BUT HE CAN SCORE AN HE CAN PLAY THE PASSING LANES, THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. I SAY GIVE DIXON ATLEAST 15 MINUTES A GAME TO GET HIM LOOSE AN YOU’LL SEE WHAT I’M TALKING BOUT

It’s sorta hard to actually watch Dee play since he’s playing for the Israeli league; his team is Maccabi Tel Aviv. He’s playing point behind a really good player, Carlos; so his minutes are limited but he feels he’s gaining professional experience and he has been in every game except this last one against Real Madrid. The league is quite completive and he’s played against two other University of Illinois players who are in the Spain league, Roger Powell and Brian Randle. Generally Maccabi plays on Sunday’s and Thursday’s around noon our time. Here are a couple links

I’ll check back a little later!! Go Wiz!

Also, txs for the keys!!
Yeah, they’ve won something like 16 titles. This loss against Real Madrid of 4 points was a heart breaker. They lost to them earlier by double figures so ya know they were trying hard to get this 2nd one. Grrrrr… hope they can win some in the Top 16!!

Did I catch that right!! Glen played for Haifa? Wow 39 points!! Glen knows about the rivalries and competition over there!! It’s just different here in the NBA. Some of the USA players are friends off the court; overseas sometimes even wearing the other teams colors is a no-no!

Would like to hear from bloggers re: Grunfeld. While I agree with the majority of posts re: Tapscott, we should keep in mind that he is only the messnger. Nothing is happening on the court (rotations, minutes etc) without Grunfeld’s blessing.
In the only interview I heard from him, he is a supporter of Tapscott and all the moves the interim coach is making. His plan appears to be wait til next year.

Tap just doesn’t get it and anyone who thinks that he does, or is above criticism doesn’t get it either.
The bulk of the criticism for the Wizards performance this year falls on the shoulders of Erine and Tap. Ernie picked, and has stuck with, Tap and Tap is a horrible coach.
The man is the world’s worst regarding rotations; he has no game strategy; he doesn’t understand how to deploy defenses; he has yet to demonstrate any knowledge of offfensive strategy; he is a negative influence on the younger guys (so much for coach of player development)…in short, he has not a single positive attribute that would qualify him to coach a basketball team on ANY level, let alone a NBA team.
The players play hard. They are coached poorly, They are placed in positions from which it is almost impossible to succeed.
I realize that Critt was out of action tonight; and I realize that I was critical of Tap for not playing Juan in front of the President last night, but for goodness sake I didn’t mean that Juan should play 20 minutes while he contributed nothing tonight.
I think that Jamison is an offensive force. He is also a defensive liability. AJ had his (pick a number) triple double tonight (21 points, 14 rebounds, gave up 25 points). AJ has always played defense on his heels. Previously he had youth to help him recover. Might be time to start thinking 6th man award again. He has the tools to score double/doubles off the bench.
CB, once again, demonstrated the lack of humility that was present the past few years that made him an all-star. Like AJ, CB only shot when he had the ball. His turnovers are unbelievable in number and timing. He is becoming a hot dog with this “captain” BS.
Once again, I suggest that AJ and CB be limited to 20 minutes per game; Darius be the back up for McGee at 5; Blatche play the 4 position; Dominic play the 3; Nick play the 2; Mike James be the backup for Critt at 1 for the bulk of the game. I no longer care if we win or lose, I just want to see the younger guys have an opportunity to develop.

Recently on the Washington Post blog I asked Ivan why the Post editors seem to choose to portray the Wiz in the worst possible light. I asked him why they chose to publish the pic of Dominic having his shot blocked when he had a 14 point/ 14 rebound game. I thought that it would have been better to show Dominic scoring, rebounding, or blocking a shot, himself. The Wiz ARE, after all, the home town team.
Tonight we all had to suffer through Steve B. rambling on about some insignificant piece of trivia while the game was in progress and we had no relevant input from him about what was transpiring on the court. It might very well be that Steve B. is simply mouthing the words that some producer/director is shouting in his ear, but I find it annoying. It is also annoying that Steve B. says things like “Blatche just bowled him over on the drive”, when there was actually a blocking call made on the defender. Phil has the right attitude, he minimizes the opposition’s success and maximizes the Wizards successes. Steve seems to go in the opposite direction. What’s his deal?

I will give Caron props as far as trying to get the wiz fired up and into the game…somebody has to do it, and since he’s on the floor the majority of the time, he might as well step up.

Thanks DJ and Glenn – - I put that in your hands because I trust you guys; thanks! I REALLY appreciate it!
Man…For me, the game was just bad in all types of ways – - I don’t know what was worse – my friend embarrassing the hell out of me, or Tap embarrassing the hell out of the players…That had to be like one of the worse experiences experienced at a game. The good thing is that I met DJ and Glenn and was able to speak a bit to AB and McGee, so that was cool!
The line-ups were pretty horrendous; Juan should not have even seen most of the minutes he got last night – - he kinda seems to mess up the flow of how the game should go. Then at one point, I found myself wondering where the hell was D-Song because he SHOULD’VE seen more minutes – - as Mike (because he had a great game yesterday), Dom (he did too), Nick (and him too), McGee , AB, and Pech (OMG, these three did too!) should’ve. I’ve just never seen anything like it; I really didn’t understand what was going on. Nick was doing good in the first quarter, then he yanked him out! D-Song was making the points and creating the flow we needed that complemented Twan and Caron’s game, but he got yanked too numerous times. In the fourth, I noticed something CRAZY happening. I’m like “Ok, why is Dom holding Charlie V. right now?” Then I look over like “who’s our C?” Long behold, Twan was playing in there as C – how BIZARRE is that??? Demoralization can, well should, (now) be added to his résumé because that was just terrible. I don’t even know what to say anymore – - I’ve NEVER seen anything like it. Scott enjoyed out-coaching him yesterday. I mean, I know that Obama is Obama, but man! Fans can’t even see themselves a win like that anymore – - Tap made sure that he was on his A-game in front of our Prez (of course)…

I like Buckhantz; he is one of the best home-town style announcers I’ve every followed. Earlier this season, I tried watching our game vs. NO down there via the net. I could not believe how bad and one-sided their announcers were.
I wasn’t able to watch last night. What a horrible effort it appears to have been from the box score.

DCB that is my biggest Wizards related fear. Ernie has said on more than one occasion that Tap is doing a very good job. If Ernie really believes that and his words aren’t just meant for “the press” the Wizards are in much worse shape going forward than we initially imagined.
We now have two very large hurdles to our teams future success. We are financially strapped and won’t even be able to sign our draft picks. And now it seems we have the possibility of Tap coaching the team again next season if Ernie believes he is doing a “good job”.

Actually, I thought the team showed more energy on D than earlier in the year. Made a lot of mistakes, however. Looked like a lot of ad libbing on offense. And often it was working. The paper indicated that might happen more.
Jamison is a maestro around the basket. I love to watch him. His shooting % down low must be the best we’ve had since Moses Malone and the shots he makes would be really tough ones for most players. And getabigboy, I completely agree with what you say about his D. I do think, however, that last year he improved that aspect a lot. He seems to have regressed this year.
The most encouraging thing about McGee is his energy level. Most guys that big aren’t that energetic. He needs to temper that energy with focus and concentration when he shoots, but that should come with experience and confidence.
Pecherov was playing for a few games and doing OK. Now he’s disappeared again. No one can get confidence and experience just playing 3-4 minutes a game. Maybe they decided he’s just too ugly to be on TV.

Bridge, you were right-on with your comments. No one can figure how Tap will use players. He does some pretty crazy things that no other coach would do. The only thing for sure is that to win, the team will have to overcome whatever he does.

Evening neal,
I read, gain insight from, and enjoy every word you post.
I think that AJ’s defense only appeared to improve last year because he had Brendan (who really improved) to stop some of his mistakes. While Darius has many positives, his stopping power as a last resort is not one of them. It’s probably one of the reasons why he gets a lot of fouls ; we are usually behind at the end of the first quarter, and we are fighting uphill throughout the rest of the game.
I agree with you and I really love AJ’s offensive game also. I don’t believe that he is a slackard on defense. I just think that he simply can’t compete with the quickness of the players he is supposed to defend.
To compensate for the man-to-man defensive weaknesses, the Wiz frequently play a zone. When we do play zone, our defensive rotations in the zone are poor after the second pass and then we get killed by the 3-point shot. I’d be willing to bet three (and only three) push-ups that during practice, the ball seldom gets beyond the second pass so we don’t get to practice what to do after that.
It’s no small wonder that the best coaches are the best teachers. Coaching IS teaching. Good teachers praise in public and criticize in private. Poor coaches let everyone know that a player made a mistake and the coach is going to punish that player by taking him out of the game at a point that emphasizes the mistake. (classic Tap—terrible teaching/coaching, VERY bad for team morale)
The Wiz is composed of a majority of very talented, very young, and very under-coached players. We should take advantage of the fact that there is no pressure to make the playoffs; no pressure to win, and use the opportunity to teach sound, fundamental basketball and let the young guys have some serious game-time to learn. AJ and CB know how to play the game. Give them some rest (20 minutes of playing time max per game). The fans would love it.
Our problem, of course, is that we have very few current Wiz coaches who are capable of teaching basketball fundamentals. If we don’t want to replace any coaches, fine, let’s just hire a few specialists who can augment the current staff. A big man coach (Zo comes to mind), a defensive guard specialist, a rebounding specialist, etc. Come on Abe, it can’t cost that much and we just might find a real coach.
Go Wiz!!!!!

I agree w/ every word Getabig says above.
Don Nelson is starting to rest his veterans. What he does, however, is give them a whole game off; he says that over the years he has figured out that this works best. That way, when the guy plays, he plays his normal minutes. When he gets a day off, that’s what it is.
We could try that instead of just lowering minutes — on the other hand, it doesn’t much matter what *we* think. The man who speaks in big words ain’t listening.
Btw, no one would ever accuse Don Nelson of being sophisticated or an intellectual. He sure can coach, however.
