Game Day Bulls

6:54 AM  Dave Johnson checking in…first I would like to express my condolences to everyone in the Bulls organization and to the family and friends of Norm Van Lier and Johnny “Red” Kerr. Van Lier and Kerr died this week. They had been fixtures with the Bulls and both had served as broadcasters and ambassadors for the team ….a lot of buzz about the possible visit of President Barack Obama..have to be careful if the Presdent  offers Ed Tapscott a play to run because President Obama is a Bulls fan….as for the game tonight….just have to play smart…with 21 turnovers that led to 30 Sixers points Wizards probably should have lost by 20 but instead were still in the game despite an awful third  quarter….I liked our energy and intensity in the first half but we have to sustain it ( and yes I know you have heard that before)….BLOGCAST starts tonight at 7…we even welcomed back blogger Slwiz to the blog on Wednesday…..on the dial on ESPN 908 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia…and 92.7  FM in Southern Maryland…..in Baltimore 1370 AM and on great affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke…and of course on line as well..

6:00PM…Dave and Glenn court side….Wizards half court game vs. Bulls transition….and they are good offensive rebounding team…starters are in..Mike james, Caron Butler, Darius Songaila, Antawn Jamison, Dominic McGuire….Derrick Rose, Ben Gordon, Joakim Noah, Tyrus Thomas, Luol Deng

Norm Van Lier was a good guard as well back in the day.

I’m sure Barack will become a Wizards fan; he better! :)

Grifon, neal and Tom M., thanks for the education regarding salary cap and luxury tax. Wow! What a great deal for the “League”. Whatever happened to private enterprise? The NBA is a little socialist gang.

I always felt that attempts at creating parity among professional teams was not good for any sport. It is far more fun to have a perennial champion that everyone tries to knock-off. When the Yankees are out of the race in baseball, the interest diminishes. The real fun watching the NBA was when everyone chased the Celtics and/or the Lakers. Having to break up teams because of salary caps and/or luxury taxes is what creates the atmosphere of signing the hired gun to help win the championship. The fun of rooting for the home town team comprised of players that you’ve come to know is lost. The hired gun is usually someone you’ve rooted against in the past.

It’s just so weird because Milwaukee and our President [GO Barack!] seem to be significant/linked in one odd way. Last time when the team travelled here to prepare to play, that was all during the time determining who would become president – - in which the next day (game-day), he was officially announced as our next president. Then 2day before they get ready to travel here again to play, it’s confirmed that Obama might be in the house for 2nites game…weird, but good! No matter who he’s cheering for, I still love and trust our President; he has freewill, therefore he can like ANY damn team he wants – that’s him and his first lady’s [GO Michelle!] hometown; well he’s Honolulu (more technically), but that’s his hometown!

Other than that, I hope that the guys play team-ball 2nite. I know that everyone is gonna wanna put on a show for our President (if he’s in attendance), but from what I’ve seen, he don’t look like a ball-hog on the court – - he LOVES teamwork (I would think). The TEAM has to make him have some interest in the Wizards (besides the Bulls), because I doubt that the ‘coach’ is doing it right now…

GO TEAM; GO WIZARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The President of the U.S. has more important things on the agenda than going to a Wizards/Bulls game, no?

Comment from GrifonRacing

Even the Prez needs to be able to have a little fun :)

I think that would be pretty cool. I can’t remember any other President attending a Wizards/Bullets game. It’s probably my memory lol, but I can’t remember one attending before.

Please can somebody tell me what exactly our worst record ever was?
How many wins do we still need to avoid setting a new all time low?
Go Wizards!!!!!

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 27, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Clinton was at the Feb. 21, 1998 Wiz vs Bulls game also.

Jaba – The 2000-2001 season was the worst. The Wiz had 19 wins and 63 loses for a .233 winning percentage.

Comment from Bridge

Oh, and I can’t forget about our Vice-President Joe Biden [GO Joe!]…He attended a Bulls game this season @ Chicago, so I think that both are Bulls fans!

And Michael Lee was kinda mean under his little picture “caption” 2day in regards to the Bulls. I know that they write for the Wiz and all, but there’s no need to be bitter just because they were invited to the white house. You never know – - they CAN indeed still be in the running to win a championship…Them and the Bucks ARE pretty much rollin’ ‘round on the floor kicking each other, scratching, and pulling hair for that #8 spot; having a real nasty and dirty fight for it lol. Ya never know – and the Bucks haven’t been playing too well lately…I would’ve commented on there, but I’m afraid that all that negativity and bitterness is contagious; don’t wanna catch “bittertivity” – I love life too much lmao!

A Few Questions:

When a player “opts out” of the last year of his contract does that mean he’s basically forgoing a guranteed paycheck for a bigger longer contract?

When Arenas opted out last year did the Wizards have the option to not offer him something bigger/better?

Had they chosen not to do that, would Arenas have been a free agent free to find a new team?

Thanks for the info.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time February 27, 2009 at 12:23 PM

vitality – a player opting out means that they had a player option to stay for one more year.

So Gilbert at the end of last season could have accepted his player option and been paid this year and then become a free agent or he could have become a free agent after last season.

As soon as he opted out he became a free agent and he could have gone anywhere in the league. However when he became a free agent the NBA has rules that allow the home team to pay more than everyone else can.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time February 27, 2009 at 12:23 PM

if that doesnt make sense or if you have any more questions let me know.

Comment from vitality08
Time February 27, 2009 at 12:30 PM

So when Arenas used his option, did the Wizards have the option NOT to sign him?

Comment from SportzWiz
Time February 27, 2009 at 12:33 PM

yes. He was a free agent when the Wizards re-signed him.

i was at a game back in december 1997 against the new jersey nets when it was marbury, kittles, kendall gill on the team and my favorite back in the day rod strickland was playing for the wizards. it was my first wizards game ever and at the time my dad had free box seats from his job and man were they nice! but i remember we won that game and on the way out of our box seats i looked at the tv they had in the bar area and it showed prez clinton leaving his box seats.

Comment from aznzero

i wont be able to watch the game for awhile. but ill try to catch in on the internet or maybe on the radio since i will be up the road.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 27, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Gilbert’s decision to opt out has turned out *extremely* well. Had he played out his contract and become a free agent at the end of this season, his next contract would have been *much less* rich than the one the Wizards gave him.

For one thing, teams have a lot less money to spend — revenue is down and salaries are up. For another, he’d be coming off yet another injury year.

He’d have done well, of course — but less than he got from us last off-season.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time February 27, 2009 at 1:22 PM

Vitality. yes. when a player opts out of the final year of his contract he is essentially an unrestricted free agent. Any team could have bid on Arenas after he opted out.

@ GR:

“Even the Prez needs to be able to have a little fun”

fair enough (he went to a jazz concert the other night, as reported on the radio, so I’m guessing he’s not done settling down); however, do you think going to a Wiz/Bulls game TONIGHT is classified as “fun”? I believe “fun” was last observed when #0, #1, #2, #32, and #33 were running circles all over Eddie Jordan during off-days and on road trips – and that felt like eons ago.

@ Bridge:

Your local Bucks team is going to make the playoffs. CV is pretty much a one man show but he’s unstoppable right now. And Skiles is a far better coach than Vinny Del Negro.

I watched most of the second half and was pleasantly surprised. Much more energy on D. I hope it wasn’t just exitement over the president’s being there.

We could still use more movement off the ball on offense.

I just don’t see why Blatche isn’t our starting center. Am I wrong?

I liked James tonight. He seems like a battler.

I still think we have a lot of talent. If we get a first rate coach and a lottery pick and aren’t forced to trade anyone we could be very good next year.

Comment from datonypony

WIth a healthy roster next year I believe we can be at least a 47-35 team.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 27, 2009 at 10:02 PM

The Wizards played with energy and focus. It helped that the Bulls played terrible, but I’m going to attribute some of that to our defense. Nice win guys. Everyone contributed.

I can’t even bring myself to say anything nice about Tap even when we win. There’s just too much negative about that man.

The Bulls closed the gap in the second quarter because we had ONE bona fide scorer on the court. Does Tap not understand anything about rotations?

MORE IMPORTANTLY, how can a coach, winning by 15+ through the 4th quarter, not play ever man who is capable of playing IN FRONT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. I don’t want to dis Juan in any way, but our not-even-a-human-being excuse for a coach should have seen his way clear to make sure that a home town hero got to play in front of his President. I always knew that Tap is a ridiculously terrible coach; now I know that he is a horrible human being as well.

Comment from getabigboyoffense

neal, you couldn’t be more right about Blatch. Although Darius is the most fundamentally sound player on the team, he simply is not a NBA starting center. He is an off-the-bench stopper at the 4 spot.

Of course, I believe that Blatche is not the right 5 spot player either. That should be McGee, Blatche should be starting at 4, AJ at 3, CB at 2 and Critt at 1. That is the most potent team that we can put on the court.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 27, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Tom M., you missed a good game. Sorry that I didn’t tapping it either, or I’d send you a copy. Maybe another blogger has a tape of it.

Your man Dominic played a very solid game and scored in double figures. He looked impressive.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 27, 2009 at 10:32 PM

We simply have to replace Tap NOW. He is demoralizing a young team with his stupid antics. I can’t believe that this man was ever in charge of player development. He treats young players like dirt. I’ve watched him shout at players during the game, make crazy faces to let everyone know that a young player has made a mistake, and bench them for making errors of commission. That is stupid. Errors of omission deserve reprimand after the game, in private; errors of commission require teaching to limit their reoccurrence. There is no way that Tap could teach any one of the Wizards ANYTHING about basketball. He doesn’t understand rotations, tactics, individual skills, or human relations.

Ernie, get rid of this bum now and hire ANYONE who understands enough about the game that he can teach so we can build something for 2009-2010.

GetaBig:
I got much love for you because you truly see and tell it like it is. Tapscott clearly ruined what was a good night for the team and the city.

For this guy Tapscott to publicly humiliate McGee with his comments in the paper coinciding with the way he has demoralized this young man since he took over is ridiculous.

Other than a night out a win over a very medioce transistioning Chicago team is meaningless. His grade is 14-45 or whatever this squads sorry record is. In two days nobody will remember this team. it says a lot about our squad that Chicago has won 11 more games than us. These victories and the veteran meritocrtacy crap have no benefit going forward.

Frankly, all of the bloggers have pontificated about McGee and his inconsistency, his problem is Tapscott. He has systematically taken away hisconfidence and his game. For anyone who knows ball this young fella has more going talent than anuyone on the squad. If the Wizards sleep him he will be a star elsewhere.

The deal with Tapscott and McGee is personal and you got a grown man trying to destroy a good young player, Tapscott is simply a coward and a punk. And if Grunfeld brings this dude back I’m through with the Wizards. I will not renew my season tickets if he is anywhere in the vicinity (like Arods cousin).

We got some good pieces, I can’t wait till next year so I don’t have to see this short clown on the sideline. Pam McGee ought to kick his little short butt.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 27, 2009 at 10:59 PM

Don’t readily dismiss the following concept. I’m serious.

College and High School coaches are all about teaching skilled players how to really play the game. We have several young players who have not had the benefit of being taught how to play fundamental basketball because they have come to the Wiz with tremendous physical skills but without the benefit of learning basketball fundamentals that would be available with a four-year experience on a college level.

We have enough very good college and high school coaches is this area who would work for a minimal salary and be substantially better than Tap as a coach.

What if we played out the season by giving our vets a lot of rest (limit them to 20 minutes per game) and played the younger guys under the coaching of a teaching coach? Would that not place us in a better position entering 2009-2010 since the vets would be more rested (and have fewer minutes to get hurt) and the younger guys would have learned the fundamentals of how to play the game and gained valuable experience?

Ernie, if I missed some scenario that would allow the Wizards to make the playoffs this year, please disregard the suggestion.

Well, getabigboy, that my might be our best lineup at present. But next year I trust Young, Stevenson, or our draft pick will have taken control of the starting 2 position. I think Butler’s natural position is the 3 and Jamison’s is the 4. For defensive reasons, primarily.

I can’t argue with you about playing the young guys now.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time February 27, 2009 at 11:21 PM

Tom you missed a very good one!

Energy. When we play like that we have a chance to beat anyone. I do have to agree with you Gabbo and Lenman. It seemed almost like the players decided they were going to play tonight in spite of Tap. I don’t think the man has a clue to be honest.

I like your idea of a “teaching coach” Gabbo. It makes too much sense though to be anything the current management would consider.

I doooooon’t know Tom lol. The Dominic vs Rodman thang might sprout legs??? That kid is something else. And now he is hitting his shots too? Wow.

Everytime Andray plays that silly finesse game around the basket I feel like handing the kid a can of spinach. He needs to “go Popeye” on the other team once in a while. I love the way he has developed this season tough.

What’s that… up in the air… is it a bird.. is it a plane…NO It’s PESH! News Flash… Pesh sighting.

Biggest “slight of the night”. Poor old Juan not getting the chance to play even a minute or two (and we led the entire game) in front of the Prez. Shame on you Tapscott!

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time February 27, 2009 at 11:27 PM

As far as Mcgee goes. Wouldn’t you think, given how quickly the kid came off the blocks, that the coaching staff would have slightly increased his minutes from then to now to try to develop some of his incredible talent? I’ll bet he wouldn’t be sitting so much playing for Phil Jackson or Greg Popovich.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 28, 2009 at 7:56 AM

I think the emotions in re: Tapscott might be running a little high right now. I don’t think he is a good coach, but I also don’t think he is a person-destroyer or some kind of villain. It’s basketball here, not Star Wars. Lets lighten up a bit, ok? Or, at least, I personally would be happy if we did….

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 28, 2009 at 8:00 AM

I **wish** I’d seen the game — for Dominic’s performance, for the Prez being there, for a win! I can’t believe I missed this one — maybe there’s a replay on Comcast, in which case I’ll DVR that and view it later.

Terrific line by Dominic — *when* do I start getting props from my amigo-bloggers? I will remind you that I called this kid from the day after the ’07 draft. A great pick by Ernie, whom I criticize often enough that I have to give him his due — he is a good basketball guy.

I agree that Juan should have played; it’s a shame he didn’t. My guess is that the coaching staff didn’t think about it in the context of POTUS in the house. Wish they had.

Comment from lenman
Time February 28, 2009 at 10:01 AM

Tom:

The coach is accountable and should be held to it. In these blogs, folks opine about players and their shortcomings or strengths etc. On this and other blogs, bloggers opine about players, coaches and management on a regular basis (it’s all about our opinion and emotion relevamnt to a certain issue). Its disingenuous to hold 21-22 year old kids accountable and not call out a dude that is supposed to represent leadership.

In my opinion, Tapscott’s hiring and running of the team has been detrimental to the franchise and to the team development. His comments in the press about young players and his player management has been detrimental. A good coach would not have madethe public comments nor would he have the double standard relative to play for his roster. Tapscott has pesonally went after McGee it just that simple. I can recount numerous incidents that rflect this but everyone does.

In reality, this has been a lost season where future development could have been established by bringing in competent leadership mid-season. You tell me what a starting lineup of Songalia, James , Jamison and Butler does, Prepare you for a championship run next year (I think not). This team is on the verge of getting old quickly ala the Detroit Pistons.

The only way this franchise will ever be successful is under new leadership/ownership. Tapscott and Grunfeld both need to be gone. 14-45 with no signature wins are a testament to their competency.

Tom… I’ve always liked Dom, liked him as a pick, like him as a kid, like his potential & am very happy he’s in DC.
I do not think he is anywhere close to one of the best threes in the NBA no matter what numbers you run, that’s where you & I have our Dom issues my friend.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 1, 2009 at 9:10 PM

I never said Dom was “one of the best threes in the league,” M2. I said he was “above average.”

Realize that *by definition* just about 1/2 of the threes in the league are above average threes.

In fact, just because of his rebounding, he is *well* above average. And, if you consider his age — which indicates a lot of room still to develop — he is a heck of an exciting young player to grab w/ pick 47!!

We are critical of Ernie sometimes, so we should give him his due. He doesn’t manage money stuff all that well, but he is a good judge of basketball talent. I’m beginning to think he got another steal in Crittenton, whom he got basically for nothing.

Comment from M2
Time March 1, 2009 at 10:40 PM

Well you of all people know how I feel about the entire Crit situation ;-) I wanted him draft day instead of Nick…
Look Tom, I hear you loud & clear & was a fan of the Dom pick myself from day one…
I just try to bring a little levity to the discussion in his regards.
& I like EG… I like most every move he has made from letting Jared go to grabbing D Steve for peanuts, Kwame for Butler, bringing over Gil, etc etc.
I didn’t like the Thomas or D Steve re-sign (although they did know Eddies system), I didn’t like letting Larry go & I hate the Tap decision…
But YES, at the end of the day, I very much like Ernie Grunfeld!

Hey, Dom & Crit (our guys) both need to work on their shots every chance they get… When that part of their games gets consistent, it’ll be lights out (because they both have a passion for the game that I don’t see on a consistent basis from the likes of Nick & Dre)!
