Game Day Timberwolves
8:45 AM….Dave Johnson back from the break and ready to go. Yeah Florida was nice for a couple of days but I missed hooking up with our BLOG crew. We know the tough season bit but I think we have enjoyed sharing opinions and making friends. Here is to a strong finish..I am not worried about the record….just want to see some progress….We know Jamison and Butler…again Butler is with LeBron James as the only players to average over 20 points 6 rebounds and 4 assist per game…I don’t think there are many pros that would score 35 and will a team to victory while still shaking off the flu. And Jamison played in all 53 games before the break..including getting a double-double with one hand when he sprained his thumb against Detroit back in December…And here’s to more improvement from the younger guys–again we have six guys 23 years of age or younger..Ed Tapscott even mentioned last week that he could see JaVale McGee eventually get time at the four and there could be times when he could be out there with Brendan Haywood. BLOGCAST starts at 7…you connect with me and Glenn Consor court side……on the dial on ESPN 980 AM…in Warrenton and Northern Virginia on 94.3 FM ..in Southern Maryland on 92.7 FM and in Baltimore on 1370 AM and on great affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke.
6:26 PM….Dave Johnson checking in…Andray Blatche will play tonight…and just to clear up any confusion Gilbert Arenas has not been cleared to go full out in practice but continues to do drills and play one-on-one
6:30 PM…starters are in…Mike James, Caron Butler, Darius Songaila, Dominic McGuire, Antawn Jamison…..TWOLVES…..Sebastian Telfair, Randy Foye, Mike Miller, Ryan Gomes, Kevin Love

Ok, I’m not tryna rain on the parade or anything, I’m just about to be real (like I always am). Yeah, eventually, I can admit that, yeah, it would be quite easy to just sweep our record under the carpet because it’s just that bad, but that’s also, (IMO) saying that it’s ok to be losers and saying that it’s ok to just make some excuses. You can’t just settle for less in life…I really liked what Twan said: “The most important thing is that the maturity of this team really needs to improve. We all need to take responsibility for what goes on out there on the court. What would make me happy is when you lose games, you should come in here pissed off, not acting like you’ve won five in a row” [Washington Times].
As far as the excuses part, here’s what EG had to say: “Over the course of the last four or five years, we established ourselves as a winning organization, and we want to keep going that way. Once we get everybody back, get all of our pieces together, we can be a very competitive team” [WT].
I’m sorry, but every team in this league is quote-on-quote – a – “competitive team.” Bucks fans started to go CRAZY here when Michael Redd went down with injury, then Luke Ridnour – - so here, that makes: 1) Bogut (our C); 2) Redd (our SG); and Ridnour (our PG). Technically, Bucks fans and Wizards fans are in the same boat as far as being injury struck. But even with having (primary) guys out – - which the coach and everyone else is aware of, there are (at least) still some wins happening. So injuries…I’m SO SICK of having to hear about that excuse! And YES, we DO [the Wizards] have (most of) the players to get it done, so something else must be (obviously) wrong…
But yeah, I hope that we could get a win 2nite…(a very flat) GO WIZ!!…

SportzWiz, Good idea about the polls.
Tom M. I agree that it is a sad situation when the possibility of getting the first draft pick would end up with us trading him because we can’t/won’t afford to sign him.
I’ll be at the game tonight so I won’t be able to post any interactive “Blogger Bumps”. I hope that there are many opportunities for the rest of the bloggers to bump away. Maybe I can catch up after the game.

Here’s an idea maybe we can have nominations for blogger bump Play of the game, that people can post after each game. Then we can have a poll the following day for the blogger bump play of the day that everyone can vote on.

What do you all think of this? I personally on many levels would hate this deal. I understand it gives us cap space, but we lose Jamison and we basically help the Cavs get a ring. Not a fan at all.

Hi everyone. Haven’t been around in a long time (a month or so) and I’m sorry about that. I haven’t forgotten you nor the team I just don’t have anytime for fun anymore (damn studies…).
I’m just stopping by to say hello and I hope we can keep all our all stars for at least an other year to see all three of ‘em play together you know.
Again hi everybody and as usually go wizards!!!!
Comment from GlingGling
Time February 17, 2009 at 5:17 PM
@BigA, don’t believe any news until you see him playing (ideally in a real game).
@bridge, regarding your post several posts ago, there is something else wrong: we don’t have a good coach. When we beat the pacers, that was single handedly through the will of Caron Butler, nothing else. As good as Caron is and I love him, he can not do that night in and night out. When your go to guy isn’t on then that’s where you need a good coach. We just so happened to have fired our, at the very least, decent coach.
@everything else, as much as I dislike seeing the wizards lose, the prospect of a high draft pick is enticing. We’re not going to get another chance at a #1 or #2 with Gil and Brendan back. I understand this is part of the problem with the lottery system, but the situation is what it is: we have the second worst record in the league, the only thing left to do is not get any more injuries and hope for a high draft pick. Sorry if it sounds like I’m giving up, but this is what teams do. Does anyone remember Miami’s D-league team at the end of last season?
Does anyone think there is a greater value in splitting the the rest of our games (which historically will require about 40mpg out of Antawn and Caron) and potentially dropping to 5th, 6th, or 7th in the draft?
Comment from Jason C
Time February 17, 2009 at 5:34 PM
Gonna miss tonights game for work…as for the rumored cav deal, as much as it pains me to say it, our longterm future cap wise is more important than handing the cavs a ring. Ultimately I support Jamison, and would venture a guess that him with a real defensive supporting cast would put a good team over the top. Plus getting Etan’s contract off the books faster helps us for the big 2010 FA class. Just my opinion though.

Comment from aznzero

this year they update the roster at least once a week. they also have the new feature were the players in real life are playing well, they will also play well in the game and vice versa. also if in real life if a player comes up with new moves those will also be put in the game for that player to do. its pretty realistic this year. so realistic that it is hard to play with the wizards at times

Glenn here: Wiz need to stay with the front court players, the are helping too early, and the guards have to dig in! Can’t let guards get in the paint.

Glad that Caron is ok (as it appears); great games by AB, Critt, and D-Song – - even Dom hit some key shots! Twan, as always, is his usual self…Even Mike James did good! See, this is what I mean – some of EVERYONE steppin’ up…

In his interview, Eddie Jordan said “winning is fun.” Well, watching your team win is fun too!
Great 4th quarter by the Wizards — and how often have we been able to say *that* this year?
Terrific game from Dominic; great 4th quarter from Mike James. And Crittenton played really well too. Actually, everyone played well tonight except Nick and, for the first time in a long time, JaVale who managed 3 turnovers in 13 minutes.
In all, tho, it was a terrific performance when it counted — and as I say a very very fun game to watch.

Blatche is a third string player at best. He does okay in there because the Wizards do not have another experienced shot blocker other than Haywood. That is why Mcgee does well except his inexperience kills him most games…

Is there any truth in that the Wizards would not have cap space to sign a top draft pick? I just don’t believe a draft pick is what this team needs anyway

Yay! My guys are on (Gary P., Chris W. and Ahmad R.); they are SO funny (and much better than Kenny and Charles IMO).
You know, this time has got to be hard for some of the players – trade deadline time, especially with teams being over the tax and stuff. An example is this: I was just watching the Bucks/Pistons game. After the Bucks’ victory, Scott Skiles walked up to Richard Jefferson (who has been in a lot of the trade rumor stuff) and gave him a handshake and hug that was more like a “it’s been nice” type of thing. They were both obviously very emotional – hell, I almost cried! But yeah, I hope that things work out for the better – not only for Rich Jefferson, but also for Caron, Twan, whomever. Things happen for a reason…
Oh, and why can’t the man (AB) just get his props for cryin’ out loud! I just don’t understand. He and McGee and TWO SEPARATE players who are on the SAME TEAM and therefore NOT competing with each other – - I just wish that people would learn how to keep those two names out of the same sentence/statement!

The players stepped up when needed and TAP, YES TAP!! Put another guard in the game when foye was torching whomever guarded him (that wasn’t a guard). TAP also got JCritt in there to stop Telfair and got AB back in there to stabilize the front-court.
I don’t know where the 3rd string for AB came from…essentially, this is AB’s first year getting minutes (steady) and he’s producing (I don’t even know why I’m giving that comment energy), but since we can all agree to disagree, it’s all good. AB threw crucial passes, used his length at the end to stop second chance points…heck, okay, he can be third string, but right now we needed him to deliver at the end, and he did (it’s not always who starts but who finishes). Peace.

the draft pick has nothing to do with cap space, you always can sign your picks its the luxury tax situation, but that’s a story for another day

Except for the 3rd quarter that was a fun one to watch ! I agree DCB it was great to see Mike James getting killed out there…… Tapscott realizing it…. and putting Crit in with him. Imo he should always use Crit at the one and James (when he is in) at the two. Crit is quickly turning out to be one of my favorites. Like Aznzero says though he should dunk more lol.
Very good to see Andray back and not seeming to miss a beat. I think he had about 5 or 6
’s tonight.
SportzWiz… my pick for Blogger Bump play of the game.
When Crit stole the ball from, I think Foy, on their end (steal – stat)…. rushed up the court….. met at mid court by two defenders…. spin move to avoid both
…… off to the rim for an alley ooop to JaVale (assist – stat).

The Poet has maket value but its has depleted due to a huge body that has failed to respond to the rigors of a NBA schedule. First it was pulled abdomin and then heart this and that now nagging leg injuries but he has true value. The true value comes in his books and out reach to the community and maybe politics later on down the road. He is like Tracy Mcgrady whose body just can’t get right so one has to be true to one self and not selfish because the cards where dealt for a reason and thats how we grow and adapt to something new and fruitful. I will not judge but just be a real to the situation and that is it was a great run but its time for a change!

Andray is not 3d string, but he’s still got work to do to become an average starting 4 in the league. On the other hand — like absolutely everybody who plays in the NBA — he can definitely ball.
I most enthusiastically agree w/ the
to Crittenton for the play leading to JaVale’s dunk. I’m *really* starting to like Javaris Crittenton.
What I *don’t* like is our having maneuvered ourselves into a corner re: the Luxury Tax. If we can’t add one of the top picks in the draft, it’ll be shameful. The *only* way you get top players w/o having to pay for them is by being in the top few of the draft. For that reason alone, I’d be willing to give up one of our good players for an expiring contract.

aznzero,
I forgot to ask what kind of system you have I have and Xbox 360.
Tom,
I hope the front office is thinking like you. It would be a shame not to be able to afford a draft pick. Cavaliers wants Jamison for Wally Szczerbiak and his $13.8 million expiring contract. I don’t like helping the Cavaliers but I do like that 13.8 million. Portland wants Butler. Just something to think about.

We already can’t use our second round draft pick. Now with our “financial planning” it is possible we won’t be able to afford our first rounder. Those are the primary reasons I suggested packaging the picks with some contracts we are trying to unload to free us up a little money wise and roster spots.

Good morning Dave,
Honestly I haven’t been looking at our record at all this season. I just forget about it and look forward to each game as how our young guys will improve. And its exciting for them to pull off nice moves like Javale’s dunks or Nicks ability to score. Looking at them now and seeing how this team will be when everyone is back and healthy just excites me. Lets get a win tonight. Go Wiz!!!
