Game Day Atlanta
5:15 AM Dave Johnson checking in….and yes feeling good…I know we have to get ready for tonight…but Sunday was just a feel GOOD win…and jgarcia104 I read your post yesterday and I am glad the Wizards and specifically Caron Butler were able to make you scream and shout with joy on your drive home….and boy was it fun to call a game winner like the good old days again…my good friends Tom and Patti were even at the game and brought me home baked chocolate chip cookies…..on my drive home I never tasted a better cookie…back to the present and head coach Ed Tapscott says he expects a Hawks team in a bad mood after a home loss……Hawks are very athletic…make them work in half court and not get going will be a key…BLOGCAST starts at 7….and I know this season has been tough but we have a great group sharing a passion for Wizards basketball and we put you in touch with us court side… on the radio on ESPN 980 AM in Washington….94.3 FM in Northern Virginia…92.7 FM in Southern Maryland….in Baltimore on 1370 AM….and on great affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke….and we will find a way to listen online.
6:35 PM Dave Johnson checking in from Phillips Arena…..Caron Butler will be our special half time interview….starters are in..Mike James, Caron Butler, Darius Songaila, Dominic McGuire, and Antawn Jamison…..Hawks will have Mike Bibby back from a left foot sprain….Joe Johnson Al Horford, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams

I don’t know about the rest of you, but, I’m getting just a little tired of the AP sports writers’ lack of imagination and creativity. Is “lowly” THE only word they can come up with to describe us?
We are coming off a nice win where everyone played as a team. Let’s try to build on that.

Thought you guys would like some facts on Wizards LEADERS. Figures are for this season unless noted.

McGee 12.8
Haywood (career) 12.0
Jamison 11.3

Blatche 11.1
McGuire 10.3
Thomas 10.2
Assists Per 48 Min.
Dixon 8.9
Arenas (career) 7.1
James 5.8

Dixon 1.8
Next year Dixon will be gone and James won’t play much. I really wish we had better 3 point productivity projected.
Presumably, with more experience, McGee, Pecherov and Blatche won’t foul so much. And Crittenton will get more assists.

Great to see the wizards get another win, with Butler taking over down the stretch and hitting the dagger over Danny Grangers, lets try to make it two in a row against the hawks!!!!
A blogger on “Wizards Insider” has made a post that Gilbert could possibly recommence training with the team soon with the goal to return for the last 10 games.
Sports Wiz / Dave can you please confirm if you are hearing the same rumours, is there any factual evidence there?
I know the chances are slim, but is it possible to try to get some feedback from Ernie about the upcoming trade deadline, 09 Draft prospects and how he feels the team is progressing towards winning a championship (please no more references to “if we remain healthy”).
I found it concerning that neither senior management nor Arenas have made minimal comments about our current position. Has management placed a gag order on Arenas and why is he not sitting on the bench at home games instead of rehabbing his knee?
Comment from SportzWiz
Time February 10, 2009 at 10:24 AM
Gilbert has been workign out, but for the past few weeks he hasn’t really been viewable by media, he usually waits until people leave so its hard to get a gage on that.

Thanks for the info SportzWiz…
I, for one, would like to take back those comments said about Gilbert yesterday…What if he was given a “gag order” – - I just did research on that…It would all make sense; ticketholders are upset about him not returning, and I’m sure that EG was probably upset with what was said…If a “gag order” did take place though, that’s even stupider because it draws people away even more. People may not like what he has to say all the time, but it does keep the speculation going, which would…keep the people around. Maybe I’m just overanalyzing, but I’m just going off of Kaino’s comment.
If all is true with the gag order, I just wanna first of all say: how stupid on management’s part, because fans, after all, don’t like to feel as if they’re being ignored (i.e. asking about updates and not getting any, or getting the same updates) – - c’mon, we’re not stupid! So yeah, therefore, I would like to apologize for calling out Gil as being selfish because it doesn’t seem to be him. I’m sorry Gil; hopefully my apology could be accepted. Maybe this is how they want his fans to see him as…as some overly selfish person. So Gabbo, maybe he’s not the one that you should be calling “Waldo” lol. What a mess this all is…

To: M2
Hey M2 aka “The Oracle” what’s up man… Yeah, tell Bridge that I definitely accept her apology but better yet tell her that blogging is typically an unfiltered expression of ones feelings both good and bad and thus accepted as such. Therefore, no apology is really necessary. I’m pretty sure everyone knows and understands that emotions run high while blogging as it’s usually about a subject that you have great passion for and thus the people blogging have license to rant accordingly. I think it’s a no harm no foul understanding amongst bloggers. In any event, she seems very sweet and it looks like she brings a lot of positivity to the Wizards blog. So all of that to say, I’m very cool with her but I’m still curious to know if God agrees with me
. Oh & let everyone know that I’m definitely gonna get some burn before seasons end!

Jgarcia104, Hughes is 30 years old and injury prone. He’s making $12.8M this year and $13.7M next year. You really want him? We can’t relive the past.
The only trades for Hughes I can think of that meet the 15% rule and also keep us w/i the luxury tax limit is Arenas for Hughes or Butler and Stevenson for Hughes.
Comment from SportzWiz
Time February 10, 2009 at 4:25 PM
Neal just an fyi , the rumored move on the chicago site was Etan Thomas and Mike James for Hughes.

neal and/or Tom M., help me understand something. Puttting the luxury tax aside for a minute, could a team not simply cut a player (pay him whatever is owed to him, but remove him from the roster) to clear up a spot.

basically you can release a plaeyr but if he’s under a guaranteed contract you still owe him all that money.

Yes, I didn’t think about that possibility, SportzWiz. That trade meets the criteria. I guess I would do it, too, although I’m not sure it would help us much.
getabigboy, the salary of that cut player still would count against the luxury tax limit, unfortunately.

What I would *like* about that trade, if it really is 2 for 1, is that it’d open up a roster spot. I don’t think the trade would *hurt* us, although I don’t know how much it’d help us.
We certainly no longer need Etan this year or next, and Mike James is no help to our team this year or next either. On the other hand, Larry Hughes can’t have many miles left in his tires. He’s been in the league since he was 18 and Phila. drafted him.
Still, Larry might bring something on defense. Maybe he’d be some kind of mentor for Nick, too?
Anybody think it would *propel* the team in some way? I don’t seem to see it.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 10, 2009 at 6:33 PM
I *do want* that 1st pick in round 2 next year, btw. Some terrific players have gone in that spot. Carl Landry, most recently. Gil was picked further down from there, for that matter.
In most ways, it’s a *better* pick than a late first-rounder. I think either pick is a long shot to make the league, and I know there’s not a difference in those odds between a late first rounder and an early second rounder.
But, what really makes it better is that you don’t have to guarantee the 2d rounder, and of course you pay him a good bit less. It’s a great pick for a team to have. I don’t want to waste it.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 10, 2009 at 6:36 PM
Getabig — if we cut a guy and take on another guy, it’ll push us into Luxury Tax territory, which basically means that a) you pay $2 for every $1 on the new guy’s contract, and you *don’t* get to be one of the teams that splits the “tax” paid that way by the teams that *do* get over the limit.
Unless you are going to get a tremendous player *and* a tremendous bargain, it’s bad business. Even at 11-40, I wouldn’t do it.

Okay, they pick up fouls, but if the other team stops getting penetration so much, maybe they won’t foul so much?
And McGee’s man wouldn’t have so many offensive rebounds, because he has to leave his man to guard against the penetration.
Oh well, let’s dig deep and end this on a strong note.

Our defense is bad tonight – so bad that it’s making the Atlanta players look fast…They’re out running us…C’mon guys, this is NOT Golden State (a fast playing team).
And they taking us to the line too much, but we haven’t really seen the line. Why is it so hard for us to get a lil contact (with any team)…

As everyone already knows, I LOVE JAVARIS CRITTENTON!
I continue to contend that there are some bright spots this season with our youngs… They are getting serious court time for obvious reasons & it will pay off in spades next year.
McGee / Young / McGuire / & Crittenton (I refuse to count Blatche because he’s in his 4th freakin’ year already) are gonna be real nice…

Watched the Wiz and then had to watch LeBronze get a fake call with .8 of a second on the clock and he made both to tie it. A pure BS call. Then with .4 of a second on the clock LeBronze fouled Granger on the same type of play. Granger made the first and intentionally missed the second and LeBronze went stomping off the court without so much as a nice game to anyone. BUSH LEAGUE! and this is what we want to represent the NBA????? Come on. I can think of many other players who would be better representatives for sportsmanship.
On to the Wiz vs. Hawks:
I guess that with Darius injured, McGee might get some serious minutes where he will be allowed to make some mistakes and learn. The man is a force. I wish that he wouldn’t try to block every shot within twenty foot of his body, however. He picks up a lot of really bad fouls because he lets his man shoot and depends upon blocking the shot. I wish that he would spend more time getting defensive position so that his man had a harder time getting the ball at all. It would also help if our perimeter defense could stop someone from driving the lane and causing our big guys to try to defend both their man and the guy with the ball. McGee might be better off is he didn’t try to block a single shot for a game, but concentrated on defending his man from getting the ball in a good position to score.
I feel very badly for Antawan because he plays so hard every night and Tap doesn’t give the man any decent time to rest. It was obvious tonight that he was tired. His legs were not there. Without the legs, his shooting was off. That is not the way to treat our best offensive player. AJ played 39 minutes in a 21 point loss. Nice coaching Tap. CB and AJ, between them, played 80 minutes and shot 14/33 from the field (a little over 42%). The rest of the team was 19/41 (a little over 46% and that includes Dixon’s 1/5 and Critt’s 2/5).
Our lack of an offensive strategy was glaringly apparent tonight. On many possessions four guys watched while the man with the ball had to try to score. The Wiz are totally devoid of any offense except, “you’ve got the ball, try to make something happen”. That is not a player lapse, it is a coaching deficency. Caron, Mike, Nick, Critt and Juan look bad sometimes because they have to create something without any help.
We have got the horses. We don’t have a driver.
If we can really get Larry for Etan and Mike, I vote “GO FOR IT”.
I am NOT interested in Amare. We don’t need anyone else (where’s Waldo) who thinks that the team rises or falls depending upon them.
M2, you are breaking my heart with your criticism of Blatche. He is a very good player being played out-of-position by a coach who apparently doesn’t understand the basics of the game. He is the 3rd youngest player on the team. He has progressed nicely. He is a young guy who has to learn how to act and play as an adult. He needs some instruction (his shoooting has improved under Hoppla). I still maintain that bringing in someone like Zo to coach the big guys would make McGee and Blatche 100% beter.
Even though the schedule on the Wiz web site indicates that we played the Bobcats on Feb 11th, I am pretty sure that we’ve got them tomorrow (12th). Watch your backsides B’cats. We’re angry about the loss to the Hawks and we’re after you. Go Wiz!!!!

No criticism of Blatche in that last post (although his Kwame Brown work ethic is easy to criticize)… I was just saying that we have 4 kids with less than 2 years experience (Blatche is young but has been in the play-offs for three seasons now… Hell, LeBron is twenty three). I’m more an experience guy…
I completely hope & pray that your assessment of him pans out. I’ll be cheering with bells on as I clearly see his upside in one of every four games he plays.

Don’t refrain…
Most of the game timers seem to listen live to the blogcast or whatever (I have the NBA package with my laptop on hand to see if any real banter is flying around on this site)…
I’ve learned to jump in & say hello & then see what’s happening with folks after the game. I’m not that interested in, “good pass Caron” or “way to slam it McGee” comments while the game is on…
The best stuff on here is pre & post game.

I turned off last night’s game mid-2d quarter; how much can a fan take? (It’s on the DVR, so no doubt I’ll go through it later today…)
M2 — when we traded for Javaris, I couldn’t see the reason why. Please allow me to eat my words. He is a legit young NBA point with a big upside. I’m glad we have him. You were right about him.
Javaris and JaVale had very nice games last night. The more we play them, the faster they’ll develop. We’re not going to win games on their backs this year, but along w/ Dominic and a top choice in June they are key to our future.
