It seems as if a plague is sweeping through that organization with all the injuries that’s occurring….

At first, I was in that “I hope that this team stays together” boat, but now, it’s just to the point where I’m hoping that some guys are considering a move, so that, in the long run, they’ll be happy. It’s sad because I looked at a team like OKC, and they’ve got 13 wins (I think) – - We only have…10…I’m just sitting here thinking about how much of a force OKC could be in the future because throughout their losses, they really seem to be coming into their own. The Wizards though, seem to be taking steps back; becoming different players, but for the worst. I’m tired of the “injury bug” excuses; yeah, Haywood is now the added (huge) addition to the list, but man, we should have more than just 10 wins – - 20 at least! Then we have a guy just sitting there on the bench, much like Damon Jones does here…Give me 3 mil and I’ll just sit there on the bench with a damn bow-tie on, while laughing a joking occasionally when your team is like 10-100!

I hope that certain guys DO move (i.e. Twan, Caron, Dominic, AB, and Pech); just for their own benefit…This is ridiculous…They don’t even have a real coach and then sometimes I’m convinced that EG just don’t know what the hell he’s doing. Excuse my anger, but I just think that some of these guys deserve A LOT better. Man, I can’t even express how HAPPY I am for AD and Roger Mason right now!

The Bobcats have traded two non-rotation players (Morrison and Brown) for Vlad. Radmanovic — who definitely has some game. They’ve improved.

Amare Stoudemire will wind up in the East playing for one of our rivals (the Bulls and the Heat are the strongest suitors, according to reports).

On the other hand, according to Ernie (quoted in the Post): 1) Tapscott is doing a heck of a job, 2) “when we’re healthy, we’re very competitive” (boy, am I getting *tired* of hearing that!), and 3) we’re getting lots of interest in our players, but we don’t want to make a trade.

Now, given Ernie’s penchant for revealing… absolutely nothing!, we might still be the ones to wind up with Amare.

Problem is, according to reports Phoenix wants expiring contracts, youth and draft picks. Then again, who doesn’t?

What would you guys give for Amare? Would you include our upcoming 1st-rounder? How would you make the salaries work?

Comment from neal
Time February 8, 2009 at 10:19 AM

I can’t imagine how it could work. The two high-salary guys I think we can do without (Arenas & Jamison) definitely do not have short contracts.

We have to do something drastic about our D. I don’t know if a new coach can pull it off w/o trading a couple of our defensive liabilities.

“Getabig — I don’t think the Nuggets are a “mediocre” team; they’re a good team…” – Tom Mandel

Nets 114 Nuggets 70
(Yep that’s a 44 point loss…to the Nets)

You’re right TomM, they’re not mediocre, they’re pretty bad, but they’re still 20 points better than a Tapscott-led team.

Yes, Tom M., I saw this this morning also:
“On the other hand, according to Ernie (quoted in the Post): 1) Tapscott is doing a heck of a job,…”

That is absolutely irresponsible of Ernie to say something like that. If he’s trying to get us to renew season tickets with that bull, he’s got it all wrong. If Tap was doing any kind of a decent job, the fans would not be after his head.

Ernie is telling the big lie and he expects the fans to believe it. WRONG!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Getabig — the Nuggets definitely got pounded last night! On the other hand, they are 34-17 overall, 7-3 in their last 10, and 14-11 on the road. A good team, in other words.

neal — we can “do without” anybody! It’s all whom we get back.

Comment from Tom Mandel

Getabig — we’re in agreement about Tap and about Ernie.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:28 AM

I think it might be as much being “blind” as being “irresponsible,” Getabig, and that worries more!

I think he actually has convinced himself that we’re a good team, crippled by untimely injuries.

In his head, Gilbert is the player he always was, and so forth. Yet, to me, the team is a long series of questions not answers. The biggest one being: “Is Gilbert Arenas going to be the player he was before 3 knee injuries?”

That’s not the only one, however. There are a zillion open questions and no apparent strategy for answering them.

Some random thoughts…

- Although I missed the game on Friday (Eucharistic Adoration) I taped it – The Wiz remind of that iconic character in the old Charles Atlas ads. You know, the 98lb weakling who gets sand kicked in his face and does nothing about it. Well, tonight the Pacers will get a chance to play against the Wiz’s tissue-paper soft defense. The Pacers will get a bunch of uncontested layups and dunks. Some of those dunks will come at the end of the game when the point is to show disrespect. The fans will boo and the Wiz players will display downcast body language.

This team has no fight, no hustle, no moxie. Darius is the only guy who hustles on both ends of the court.

- Jamison’s recent comments sound like a guy who wants to be traded and not committed to making this organization a winner. These remarks cannot instill confidence in the younger players

- Dominic used to be a good defender, what happened the last few games? Plus, he is releasing the ball off of his ring finger, not the pointer finger. That’s why his jump shot goes short and off to the right (do we bloggers have to tell the coaching staff everything?)

- Can someone give an update on Andray and Brendan’s return? Or Gil’s return? The fans are owed an update.

- A trade I would like to see is Pech for the Net’s Sean WIlliams (a player with some moxie)

“Oh, I think Antawn gets to vent, yes I do” -Tom Mandel.

Tom M., I agree Antawn can vent all he wants and as loudly as he wants…behind closed doors. That’s how a leader handles things. To complain about teammates in the press is NOT providing leadership.

Antawn is publically complaining about guys only playing one end of the court. LOL. I know that Antawn must watch replays of every game. How can he miss #4 standing around on “D”, or #4 waving his arm as an opponent drives around him, or #4 not getting into defensive position to take the charge?

Antawn is publically stating that the Wiz have to “move the ball” and not settle for jump shots. Do the replays not show #4 jacking up shot after shot every game; how does he not see #4 shooting almost everytime that he touches the ball; can he see that#4 only goes through the motions of setting a pick to free up someone else for a shot (hence, the phantom pick made famous by #4 and #3)?

If there are any mirrors in the Wizard locker room, AJ should take a LONG look.

Good grief, imagine if I didn’t like the guy…Tough love.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:40 AM

I’m sure the Nets would be happy to trade Sean Williams — they don’t like his development so far and I think he’s down in the D-league (or was).

But, I don’t think they’d want Pecherov would they? That is, they have *a lot* of bigs, including Josh Boone (whom we could have taken instead of Pecherov *right off an NCAA championship team!* — assuming we hadn’t instead taken Rajon Rondo or Kyle Lowry instead of Pecherov), not to mention 2 big rookies (Lopez and Anderson).

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:46 AM

Again, Getabig, we don’t disagree: Antawn has his set of weaknesses. But every player does; to me the question is whether you produce with your set of strengths!

Like Caron, Antawn’s productivity is down this year. Given that teams stack their D against these 2 guys, we can’t really be surprised by that.

The only way either Caron or Antawn can return to normal levels of produtivity is if *someone else steps up his game.* Hence the frustration.

More concretely: if two other guys on the team had been as productive as AJ for as many minutes against the Nuggets the other night, we’d have had a good chance to win the game. Instead we got blown out.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:46 AM

Tom M., you are right about our draft picks. Whoever does the assessment of available talent for the Wiz must be pretty bad. It’s totally a reflection on management.

If we managed to get the #1 pick, we’d probably use it to take the second best player of the pygmy league on some remote pacific island.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:50 AM

Tom M., I didn’t express myself correctly.
I like AJ. I just don’t like the fact that he is holding himself out as some model of perfection (which he is not) while publically criticizing his teammates. That is NOT how a real leader leads.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:51 AM

One self-criticism I should make, because I keep forgetting:

we are down to 9 guys right now. 5 of them are rookie/2d year players. 1 of them is a dependable 9th man type. 2 of them are veteran guards who have not had productive NBA careers.

We have one player dressing for games who is a proven NBA starter — only 1 player! It’s kind of hard to compete on that basis.

Comment from Bridge
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Well said ChenierFan…

At first, I was pretty upset with Twan also for his remarks; yes, technically, people should be “looking in the mirror” (as people like to say); yes, his defense needs to improve – we all know this. But his remarks, IMO, are completely justifiable – - hell, I’m glad that someone is “speaking from his soul” as opposed to always PR(ing) his statements up. This sounds like a man who’s simply TIRED! And he should be! IDK who his comments were specifically referring to, but, as far as the young guys, I’d cross out: Dom, Critt, AB, and Pech…These guys seem mature and focused (on the court) at least.

….And yes…Dom’s defense seem to be suffering…

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 8, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Fair enough, getabig — I give Antawn a pass, because this must be painfully frustrating for him and because he phrased it in terms of the fans.

Comment from Tom Mandel

A note on Dom’s defense:

When a guy starts playing heavy minutes, teams begin to have tape on him. They start to see his tendencies, little weaknesses, shortcuts, etc. And they start to exploit them.

The only real question is how does Dom *respond?* That’s partly up to him and partly a question of the support he gets from the coaching staff in figuring out what he has to improve on and how to do it.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time February 8, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Tom M., You are on target about Dominic. Problem is we don’t have a coaching staff that could help anyone improve at anything. With the right coaching, DM could be very good. ChenierFan spotted the shooting technique issue. I wonder if the coaching staff did?

Hello everyone,

Here’s my issue with what AJamison’s comments…..

Why in the heck did he wait to only have 8/9 players on the bench to act like he’s frustrated. Call a spade a spade. I guess there was nothing wrong in the other 26 losses (is it 26 or 36…heck in a few months it will be 72) when all the veteran’s that have won a championship (sarcasm), were on the floor ending games, gasping for air, taking all the shots. Whether you lose by 1, 10, 20, 30, etc….guess what sherlock????? You and YOUR TEAM HAVE A 10-30 RECORD!!!!!

Get REAL, IF YOU WANT TO CALL SOMEONE OUT, TALK TO YOUR COACH!!! CUZ ya still playing close to 40 minutes in all the wins/losses

I think there are some tough decisions to be made with the Wizards because if management wants to keep the team together and wait for everyone to get healthy then that is one thing.

The potential deal that can be made to get Amare has to be on the minds of management.

I guess everyone needs to realize that this will be the first non-playoff season for the Wizards. So I guess what I am tryin to say is that not all hope is lost yet for the long term.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time February 8, 2009 at 5:01 PM

Wiz4L,

I understand what you’re saying. It’s not like they have given the youth directions and have shown that they have a consistent system in place. All of the problems are being pointed at the youth, but when the vets were in during crunch time, who do you point the finger at then? The problems existed way before this, so the fingerpointing could have happened 25 losses ago…and i wonder who they would have blamed then?

It may be what’s needed, among other things, but let’s try to be a team. All I hear Caron, Tap, and now AJ say is that it’s the youth. All I need to hear now is MJ say it….lol….then I’m REALLY through.

Is AJ giving guidance out there or during practice? What is he doing to make it a better situation and to help make the youth better?

Dave and Glen, first-off, you do great work calling and analyzing the game. I listen on WTOP every game.

Glen has continued to remind us we’re playing short-handed, especially when one of Caron or Antawn is down. This is important. But there is talent there regardless; this is the NBA, almost anybody can bust for 30 on a given night. My concern is the mental approach/component of the players. First, mental preparedness: I attended the Wiz-Magic game when we were 1-10 or so and our guys were laughing, fooling around in warm-ups, while the Magic were dead-serious, and of course, then took us apart. Second, mental discipline: over the last three years, the Wizards have regularly launched jump shots off one pass or without penetration—even despite coaches’ instruction. Or, as with the recent Grizzlies game, we knew to avoid playing their kind of game, but don’t discipline ourselves, and played into their strength (quick, pressuring, guards).

I know a season like this can wear on anyone. I don’t know that mental stuff can be taught, although someone like Antawn can be a good model to younger guys. It’s probably also hard to draft it. I don’t have an answer. But I think it’s a problem our players have that makes them uncoachable to an extent. It’s akin to baseball where you have a lead-off hitter consistently swinging for the fences when their job is just to get on base. It’s the thing I find most frustrating about the team; I mean we are going to be short-handed, overmatched, outsized, on occasion.

Do you agree it’s a problem for us? Why is it? If so, is it as bad or worse than other teams?

Finally, given where the season is, why not start Javale McGee? I’m glad he’s getting more minutes. He’s very raw—almost trips on himself running—but offensive instincts are there. He does need Wes to instill box-out instincts…

Thanks, and keep up your good work!

All these discussions about how to solve the problems just shows how confusing and disjointed things are.
My Solution: 1) no knee-jerk decisions which could only make things worse. 2) Fire Grunfeld and Tapscott 3) Rehire Jordan and look for a new GM.

If things remain as is, nothing will change. It reminds me of high school intramural basketball. It’s hard to create a team with individuals. AND don’t make any decisions about players now. We could regret a decision made in haste later when two or three of the folks we trade are All-Stars in three years!

Active hands on defense, but soft D going on when Pech was there.

Since the easiest 3-pont shot to make is the one in the corner (because it is shorter) I would suggest cutting off the passing lane to the corner if the defender can’t get back to the shooter. Teams have scouted that they can get planty of corner 3 attempts against our Wiz.

CARON BUTLER!!!!!!!!! I just got home from practice and all I saw was 110-103 pacers. Then caron butler showed everybody what heart was about. What a finish. Can we please get some consistency???

…..Ummm, WOW…I at least thought that more people would be happy about us winning a game…I know that it’s just 11 (now), but this is our team right? Well, at least I thought it was. My anger just be out of pure passion, and NOT because of bitterness and wanting to see them fail.

I’m still proud –
GO WIZARDS!!!!!!!!!!

Nice 4th quarter Caron. Give that man a Hibachi. Winning buzzer beating shot included.

It was great to watch them be competitive all four quarters. We got down by I think 12 early but tied it up at 44 and made it a close ball game the rest of the way. Aside from way too many fouls (but the refs called a lot of fouls on them too) it was a very well played game.

Nice to get a Win

GlingGling I noticed that too. JaVale was open for about 12 alley oops his team mates missed. Crit should have been in more with him maybe? James has some nice assists but seemed to miss JaVale at the rim a lot.

Chenier Fan poor old Pesh was running around like a head with his chicken cut off. We have to get that guy some more court time so he gets comfortable interacting with the rest of the team. Too many pine splinters in his arse.

Had the pleasure of being at the game. Everyone played hard and with great focus. It’s probably hard to believe that even though we gave up so many points,we had a very nice defensive effort.

AJ was terrific, especially in the first half. He kept the Wiz in the game in the first quarter; Nick helped him out in the second quarter and together they kept the game close. Darius was very solid on both ends of the court. Dominic had 4 blocks. His block in the fourth quarter helped to set the tone down the stretch. Mike hit a couple of timely three’s; and did not have a single turnover. AJ and CB played great in the second half, and then Caron just took over. It was like days of old. The phone booth was rockin’. It helped that it was Kids’ night because they can certainly make some noise.

I’m happy for the team. They really enjoyed the win and mobbed CB on the court after the winning shot at the buzzer. I think that he may have had the last 12 Wiz points.

Blatche appeared in uniform, but did not play. I wonder if his teammates hid his clothes while he was working out and he had nothing to wear to sit on the bench so he suited up?

Nice game Wiz!!!

Great game! Great duel between Granger and Caron! Caron with the big time heroics!

Can’t wait for the next game. Hopefully, Andray can get back in there.

That Granger is something else. Dominic played exceptional defense on him but his shots just kept falling.

Hooray for the Wiz.

I looked up something out of curiosity. Every Wizard with the exception of Dixon, James and Thomas is shooting at a higher FG% this year than his career average. How about that?

SO IT’S ALL ABOUT DEFENSE!

Good teams… the ones that win the big games always play good defense. We are getting there. Crit is quick and rarely lets his man by him. Nick, surprisingly, isn’t letting his man have an easy pass either. His offense isn’t too bad either :) The other guys seem to be catching on inspite of their coaching. We have some real talent here no matter what our record is. A little guidence would be nice, but, I’m not counting on any.

I’ve been meaning to ask….. Getabigboyoffense. Would you prefer Gabbo or GetaBB? I’ll go along with the flow. Gabbo just seems (to me) to be a little to close to … Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Zeppo, and ??? Gabbo?

GrifonRacing, lol…they’re all okay by me. Sometimes I do feel a little zany, so Gabbo works well at those times.

You are right about Crit and Nick. They are working very hard on defense. Problem is the opposition has better offensive schemes than we do, so they continue to be able to get their hot shooter open. We have a tendency to give our hot shooter the ball and wish him well, That’s what was so amazing about Caron; he just went one-on-one each time.

M2 – last 15 points…WOW!. I just lost count. Very exciting game.

neal, the FG% stat is really interesting. I would not have guessed that that would be the case. Given that we really don’t have a NBA offense, that is a real tribute to the quality of offensive players we have.

In light of what happened after Butler got a few days off seems to me we should give the veterans a day off from time to time, particularly when we have back-to-backs.

What a gratifying win, and what a fun game to watch.

Basically, this game is kind of what Tapscott was apparently hoping for: everyone plays ok, and Caron and Jamison win the game. They both played great games.

Nick had an all-star first half, showing unbelievable quickness and athleticism w/ the ball in his hands.
