Actually, forget Rodriguez — I’d only do this if it were Fernandez or Batum in that spot in the deal.
The resulting Wizards team — w/ a premium FA and esp. if we get the #1 pick in June (i.e. Blake Griffin) — contends for a championship w/in 3 years.

Fernandez takes Mike James’s minutes. Frye takes Caron’s minutes. LaFrentz is injured.
Btw, 80% of LaFrentz’s huge salary is paid by an insurance company because of the injury. This is a great financial deal too!

I love of some the trade but not the whole trade I would add Gilbert Arenas to the problem group
Comment from Tom Mandel

I don’t think anyone would trade for Gilbert because of the combination of his contract and injuries.
Obviously, I’d hate to lose Caron, but you have to give up something to get something, and $12.7m to sign a big-time FA is a big “something” to get.

Did anyone notice that we made the comback last night without caron in the game. There were less turnovers and the ball moved more without him. Maybe thats why our ONLY 2 GAME WINNING STREAK came without caron. The positives from last night : Dominic Mcquire was a stud on offense and was really aggresive going to the basket. Also we all know Javaris played great and there is no reason why he shouldn’t be starting. Lastly we got a healthy body back in Deshawn but his shot wasn’t there. I hope we start to see the deshawn of last year.

Tom, Caron is coming off back to back all stars & is putting up numbers only a handful of other players in the league are able to put up.
So ultimately he IS the “big time FA” you’re looking for…
My point is, NO, Caron is NOT on the block for any trades.
You guys all keep looking for draft picks & free agents… What the h%ll?
We have a nice team when healthy. Some solid youth that’s developing in the midst of this miserable season & veteran leadership.
I said, “when healthy”…
Let it rest already. Blake Grif, Steph Curry, or some “big time free agent” doesn’t mean squat. Just ask Toronto. & Philly is playing 500 & they brought over Elton Brand… NONE of that matters. It’s health, chemistry & coaching (in that order).
We’re missing our franchise guard, our big man in the middle & essentially his back up (Thomas for the last 2 seasons really), Butler, Stevenson & Blatche have all been banged up at one point or another, etc etc.
This season is a wash for anything other than letting our youngs play & develop.
I like McGuire & Crittenton better than Blatche & Young… & I love McGee… but, I LIKE THEM ALL!
Under normal circumstances these kids would be getting spot duty at best. Look at this season as a developmental one.
I do think Tap is / was a really bad idea & his role with the organization (currently as coach) is really jeopardizing the youngs growth. I hope a new coach is able to work with whatever damage to these kids his ultimately doing. I hope they aren’t picking up any bad habits that will take a season to reverse. My guess is that they are not..
So look all that said, I’m optimistic.
Haywood, Jamison, Butler, Arenas & Crittenton would start for me next season.
With McGuire, Blatche, McGee & Young getting heavy minutes & vets like Stevenson, James, Songalia, Thomas & maybe even Dixon ready for spot duty (nice to have vets mop up & play spot duty, just ask San Antonio).
Sorry, I have no use for Pech (neither does any other team in the league) so lets dump him & have room for our AMAZING draft pick
…
In any event, I think thats a pretty nice core in this league & a nice mix of young & old (but still not even that old).
WE JUST NEED TO GET HEALTHY!
Watch next season… Crazy a$$ turnaround that the entire league will be talking about!
Enough of the doom & gloom already… We need a new coach to light a new fire & WE NEED TO GET HEALTHY!

TomM, I don’t have a problem trading Caron Butler, Mike James and Oleksiy Pecherov. I do have a problem trading Nick Young (I’ll get to that later). But to state “We get a premium FA next year, an extra roster spot and get rid of some problem players.” is a bit much.
We don’t have problem players, we have problem management. Caron is a bona fide NBA first-rate player who is being forced to play way more minutes than he should and it is effecting his game. How can Pech be a problem when he does everything that is asked of him, but he doesn’t get to play. Mike James is not a problem, his shot isn’t falling.
Nick Young has been in the league two years. He got minimal playing time last year and is stuck in Tap’s ridiculous 7-game rotation scheme this year where it is hard for anyone to get established. He had three straight great scoring games and then the LOTTERY COACH decided to limit his playing time…BRILLIANT! A coach with any sense of how to take advantage of his players’ skiils would have devised some offensive sets that would isolate Nick one-on-one with the ball. Nick could be a 20+ point-per-game scorer with a real coach.
Nick’s defense has improved this year (again, ONLY his second). He is a better defensive player than either of our former all-stars. However, trading Nick would be just like the Wizards who have traded away any number of great players because coaching could not figure out a way to take advantage of their skills.
Good coaches don’t force players to adapt to the “system”. Good coaches devise a system that make use of the players’ skills. A good coach places the players in a position where they can best succeed, not in a position where they have to overcome to be successful.
Box scores don’t tell the story. A player with great skills who is not being used correctly can easily post bad stats. You have to watch the games to determine who can be an asset and who should be replaced.
Tapscott lost last night’s game just as he has lost many other games this year. AJ played 40 minutes, CB played 42 minutes. We got beat in the 4th quarter AGAIN. During that quarter, Tap played AJ and CB and DeShawn along with Mike James at the most crucial times. AJ and CB were exhausted. DeShawn admitted to being winded (23:29 after being out for a couple of weeks). Mike still can’t throw a pea in the ocean. Critt and McGuire had their best games EVER and he took them out when it really counted.
I don’t know if Tapscott is the worst coach ever, but I have seen many, many coaches and he gets my vote.

Once you put your ego aside, game-time coaching is a very easy job. Properly coached, a basketball team knows what it is supposed to do the vast majority of the time. However, bad coaches seem to have a Napoleonic complex where they think that they have to impose their will on every offensive and defensive set. If it requires someone yelling instructions on every possession, the team hasn’t been prepared properly. Watch Tap during the game.

Hey, I did say that “I’d hate to lose Caron.” I didn’t include him in my fantasy trade, because he is a “problem player.” Far from it.
The trade — which would be a long shot to happen, obviously, even if Ernie were pursueing it, which I’m not saying he is or even should be — would give us $12.7m to sign a premium FA. That compensates for losing Caron (again, I *love* Caron).
It also would give us Rudy Fernandez (a high-level player already) and Channing Frye (who was very highly thought of until he somehow lost playing time in Portland) in place of Mike James, Pech and Nick. I’m pretty sure that’s a good deal, guys.
And… it’d give us another roster spot, which we can use for our (in effect) other 1st round choice next year (i.e. one of the top picks in round 2).

M2 says “some big time FA doesn’t mean squat… just ask Toronto”.
I assume you are referring to the trade for Jermaine O’Neal. Anyone who was on this blog knows that I *laughed* at that trade and that I predicted Toronto would be much worse this year because of it.
Comment from M2
Time January 31, 2009 at 1:05 PM
12.7 to spend on someone so that we can see if he ends up contributing in DC… DOES NOT COMPENSATE FOR LOSING CARON!
Not even close…
EVERY team in the league would love Caron on their roster! Especially for his 10 million dollar salary (actually less than 9 this season & less than 10 next season)… ARE YOU KIDDING? He is NOT on the trade blocks.
You have to look at your roster & figure “who can I get for what I pay this guy that’s better?”… In Carons case, probably nobody!
I’m glad you thought that Toronto made a bad decision Tom, & h%ll, maybe you didn’t think Philly needed Brand etc. but I think you get my point? Run the numbers

Sidebar – Thomas & James are STEALING money from us right now & I would give D Mac a long term extension RIGHT NOW!
Everyone elses money I’m relatively cool with… “relatively” because while I’m not that troubled by his salary, I do wish Stevenson wasn’t on the roster.
Comment from M2

Oh & Tom… That trade would never happen anyway… It’s a ridiculous concept. Nobody is gonna trade for James unless they’re looking to dump players & then dump James… & in that fantasy trade you’re proposing, Portland isn’t looking to “dump” any of those guys. They would want solid compensation for any & all of them.
Okay, I’ll go about my day now…

When we got James for Daniels I thought the trade made sense for us. Daniels is only 3 months older but has a lot more miles on him and is beginning to be injury prone. In spite of that I’ve certainly changed my mind. Consider the stats (James’s figures first, then Daniels):
FG% 37,40
3Pt% 35,42
FT% 78,80
Rebounds/48 minutes 3.9,3.4
ASSISTS/48 minutes 5.8,8.9
Steals/48 minutes 1.1,1.2
TO/48 minutes 2.8,2.7
Pers Fouls/48 minutes 3.2,2.1
Oh well, James, along with Thomas, will be gone after next year, and either would have been over the hill when this team peaks. More serious are the three more years on Jamison’s contract , who is the same age as the other two and will be over the hill and VERY tired by the time his contract is up. And potentially very serious are the five more years on Arenas’s contract unless he comes back good as new.
What would work would be to trade Jamison to a playoff team for an equally expensive but less productive player with only a year left on his contract. A win-win for both teams.

News flash for everyone who has yet to understand the trade… It was all about getting Crittenton… It took a three team deal to make it happen.
Yes, Daniels has a lotta miles on his tires… His money is pretty much the same as James so I’m sure management was hoping for a wash…
James came over healthy & was able to provide instant minutes (much needed at the PG position)… I still have no problem with James for Daniels because ultimately it was about CRITTENTON!
& I certainly don’t care about losing Dee Brown because of it all…
Understand, I love Dee & Antonio as people.
& if Jamison stays around (which I think he will), he will provide nice veteran leadership without the burden of being our “ace” in the next couple seasons… He can still get it done offensively. If he becomes a 6th man down the home stretch of his career (in say 2 seasons) for the Wiz getting say 15 & 5 / 15 & 8, I will be happy!

M2 — I’ve been saying since the beginning that the trade was about getting Crittenton. Still, I’m not sure how the terms of the trade were necessary for us to absorb Crittenton. IOW, if I remember rightly we gave up AD and our memphis pick. NO gave up James. Memphis gave up Critt and another 2d round pick to NO.
I’m thinking that w/o the james for daniels part, the salaries in the trade wouldn’t have been w/in 15% as they need to be?
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 31, 2009 at 4:10 PM
M2 — Oh, I’m *sure* Caron is available for the right deal. If you are a GM, you never say never.
I’m sure, as well, that Portland would *love* to deal a point guard and Frye if they could get a stud player in the deal. If they *can’t* then they will certainly hold on to the $12.7m expiring salary of LaFrentz.
Realize — Portland’s whole strategy going forward changed a few weeks ago, when Darius Miles stuck w/ Memphis and now has a guaranteed deal. That took $9m off their free dollars (wch they got when the league granted their request to call Miles “retired” because of a career-ending injury).
Comment from M2

No one can really no what we need in terms of draft picks and trades until they happen. I remember celtics fans desperately wanted the first pick so they can get Greg Oden. If they got him they would never be this good. I really do not like the trade because if we give up young we will be sorry. He will be a superstar and we should be patient with him. Also why should we trade caron. Our team will be great in the east after we get through this season and get healthy.

M2 I love how you say the Wizards are good “when healthy”……When was the last time this current Wizards team was healthy? 2, 3 years ago? Other teams like Cleveland, the Lakers, and Utah have big injuires to their roster, yet they seem to do pretty well…..i wouldnt mind a trade on this team as long as it doesnt involve gilbert, antawn, caron, or blatche…..they r 4 guys that I personally believe can help a franchise contend…….The Wizards just need to get that number 1 pick, let etan thomas go (hes never really done much), offer a couple trade deals to some teams before draft night, and see what happens. Go Wizards!
Comment from M2

Sounds great…
Few things though:
- The Wiz were relatively healthy (as healthy as a team can expect to be understanding that there are always injuries) two seasons ago at this very same point & Eddie Jordan was coaching Arenas & Butler in the All star game because they had the easts best record so that’s what I mean by “when healthy”.
- Etan is not going anywhere because he has a guaranteed contract paying him crazy money that no other team in the league will pay.
- For the right deal, Blatche & Young can go away. H%ll for the right deal everyone but Arenas & Butler can go away, but you know what I mean when I say Blatche & Young (they’re potential trade bait)…

Ok I got a trade that doesnt even involve our 3 all stars and involves us shedding an additional 6.75 mil (which would mean we would shed a total of about 13 mil if we decided to let James go after the season): Wizards trade Thomas and Mcguire to OKC for Chris Wilcox and DJ White, Wizards then trade Songaila and Stevenson to Charlotte for Emeka Okafor, and Charlotte trades Shannon Brown to OKC. What this does for the Wizards: gives us some help at the center/powerforward spot, gets rid of etan (I mean i love the guy, but he doesnt do much and his contract is pretty hefty), gives us a role player in Wilcox, and potentially gives us 12 mil and change to work with for the draft/free agency (well about 7 if we decided to resign james). what do yall think?
Comment from Wizfan4life
Time January 31, 2009 at 5:46 PM
this trade could also open up the possibility of Jamison coming off the bench as a sixth man (this would really deepen our bench and make it stronger and more in-sync during crucial parts of the game), and it gives Javal McGee the potential to shine at the center spot if we decided to let Wilcox come off the bench

I love the trade where charlotte gives us a stud for 2 spare parts!! That’s great.
Plus, trading McGuire would be just about the dumbest move we could make. Nick yes, Dom no.
We don’t get to “let James go after the season” W4L. He has the option.
M2 — you’re going ballistic over my trade! I love it. At least I got people focused on something besides losing
As I’ve said, I never suggested that Caron “should be traded,” only that he could be. Portland really would like to have one more stud on their roster in time to compete for a title this Spring. We’ve got one. They also have a lot to give. A package could be created.

Ok ive got another one and it only involves us trading 2 players: Ok so we get Okafor from Charlotte, OKC gets Etan from us, OKC also gets Shawn May and Nazr from Charlotte, and Charlotte gets Wilcox, Joe Smith, Pecherov, and Sene……Charlotte would have to be idots to turn down this offer because Charlotte gets about 15+ mil to work with during free agency

Unless I miss my guess, I think that the only people associated with the Washington Wizards who have ever won the champianship are Abe and Wes, Sr. and neither of them is directly involved with the day-to-day activities of the players.
The Wizards could use some leadership from someone who has walked the walk…Alonzo Mourning immediately comes to mind. Alonzo was with the Heat when they won it all in 2005-2006; he was a 7-time NBA all-star; no one played with as much intensity as he did, and he has a following the the DC area.
Ernie, give Zo a call. See if he is willing to take a job as an assistant coach for a while. McGee and Blatche would improve dramatically, and everyone on the team would benefit from his experience.

Recap: Gilbert is whatever & Daniels was battling injuries so we were struggling at the PG position with Dixon & Dee Brown thus we decided to go after this kid Crittenton through trade… & package Daniels for James to get the trade done while thinking that James can do the job for us temporarily while Crittenton learns what little system we have in place.
Okay… mission accomplished… Crittenton knows the system… James, sit your a%$ down!

McGee played well but you can’t play him against experienced centers that can score big points at this time. That is where the Wiz need another experienced shot blocking center not draft pick
Comment from M2
Time January 31, 2009 at 11:00 PM
We’re 10-37… We can play him against anyone we want to play him against & let him learn. Also, he should have some slight advantages athletically versus the big centers in the league.
LET HIM PLAY REGARDLESS!
All the kids should play this year & get the necessary experience… Experience that, under normal circumstances, could take two or three seasons of spot duty behind healthy starters.
Capitalize on SOMETHING this miserable season & let the kids play!

To your trade scenario Tom I like the idea financially, but, only financially. I don’t think it’s very likely we are going to be able to replace Caron that easily. I think we have a better chance of freeing up roster spots by packaging our draft picks (room in the inn as things sit only has room for one) with a player or two we are trying to unload. That way we have 3 roster spots open, one filled by who we trade for, leaving 2 open. Lets say we package Etan and James with the picks. That frees up cap space to fill the spots, and , given Haywood is coming back next season and possibly Gil too we may have a team that can compete next season and not 3 down the road.
Were we guaranteed Griffen or Rubio my mindset might change, but, there is no guarantee in the draft if we have the very worst record we are going to pick 1st or 2nd. With the worst record we could pick as low as 4th or 5th. With the worst record two years ago Memphis picked 4th.

Gotta start by saying that Blatche was a page out of GQ with his three-piece suit tonight. You looked like a pro AB.
A win is a win is a win, and at this stage we’ll take any win that we can get. However, this was the Clippers, fans, and we didn’t blow them out, we just beat them, so let’s not get too excited. The Clippers had a tough game in Cleveland Friday night and were obviously tired. They played tough in the first half and then, with the exception of Baron Davis, resorted to outside shots in the second half. They beat us off the boards in the first half and we beat them off the boards in the second half. There were two reasons for that: (1) they wore out, but more importantly, (2) we actually played McGee extended minutes in the second half and he really responded.
McGee rebounded, tipped rebounds to AJ and CB, altered opponents shots and blocked shots…and, oh yes, he also scored. He had 18 points in 24 minutes; shot over 50 % from the field; had 9 rebounds (5 offensive), and an assist…a great game. Good grief, TomM will tell you that those are Kareem numbers when extended to 48 minutes (36 points, 18 rebounds).
Slick was outstanding also – 22 points in 24 minutes; shot 73% from the field (8-11), and played solid defense…”Noodles” Benson would tell you that that looks like 44 points for 48 minutes…GREAT numbers.
AJ played his usual great offensive game 25 points (8-16) and 12 rebounds. Caron played a good first half and a less-than perfect second half. He definitely contributed to the win – 16 points on 6-22 shooting and 13 rebounds. He had 7 assists, but also 7 turnovers.
McGee changed the game with his size, effort, and agility; Slick changed the game with his offense. Critt (the Critter) was VERY instrumental in making the Wiz run. Anyone who didn’t keep up with him, missed scoring opportunities. The young legs kept up. I like Critt’s game. He forces the play on offense and we don’t end up with everything going through one of the two former all-stars.
Tap gets a checkmark in the win column, and, in this case, he might deserve it because he actually went with what was working. However, I still consider him the worst of the worst.
Comment from getabigboyoffense

Enough of the trading Caron…the man is a genuine NBA all-star who can put up double-doubles every game. We need that. The Wiz have the players to win it all. We just don’t have the management that will make it happen. Abe has to lean on Ernie and Ernie has to select a coach who has the experience and understanding to install a NBA offense and defense that will take advantage of the skills of the Wiz players.
We have the players with both the skills and the desire to win it all. We just have to get a management team that wants to succeed.
If Gil, Brendan and Andray are healthy for the 2009-2010 and we are not SERIOUS contenders, Ernie MUST go.

Jcritt and McGee really made a difference. We’ve been harping that for so long. Glad to see that they got a chance to run for a longer time frame, AND the most important element was that they were in during CRUNCH time and delivered. JCritt played with confidence and used his skills to elevate his game beyond the D of the opposition. Good showing young man. Whether it was against the clippers or Lakers, it was the NBA. Javalle, we knew he altered shots and was a force on D, glad to see you get extended play also. That’s what was needed, regardless of any excuse about WHY you weren’t playing, keep playing your game and getting better. Congratulations to those two men for keeping their confidence and showing why they are in the NBA!!

LOTTERY ROOM FACTS (Reality of getting top pick)
http://www.nba.com/features/lottery2008room_080520.html
The lottery determines the top three picks, with the remaining teams picking in inverse order of their regular season records.
There are 14 certified, weighted and sized white balls numbered one through 14.
The 14 ping-pong balls are deposited into the machine and allowed to tumble for exactly 20 seconds, at which point the first ball will be extracted. Subsequent balls will be withdrawn every 10 seconds repeatedly until four balls have been removed.
For the purposes of the lottery, the order the balls are drawn has no bearing on the result, thus 1, 2, 3, 4 is the exact same as 4, 3, 2, 1.
In the event the machine breaks down, there is a second machine in an adjacent room. In the event both machines break down, there is a power failure or another unforeseeable event, the balls will be drawn manually from a basketball which has been lopped in half.
If more than one ball pops out of the machine at any one time, only the first ball will be official and any others will be returned to the tumbler.
Four balls are selected to represent one combination. There are 1,001 possible combinations. Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations based on how few amount of wins it had in the regular season. One thousand combinations are doled out, the 1,001st combination, 11-12-13-14, is not assigned to a team.
This year’s lottery chances: Miami (250), Seattle (199), Minnesota (138), Memphis (137), New York (76), L.A. Clippers (75), Milwaukee (43), Charlotte (28), Chicago (17), New Jersey (11), Indiana (8), Sacramento (7), Portland (6), Golden State (5).
Only two times since 1991 has the team with the most chances landed the top pick (Cleveland in 2003 and Orlando in 2004).

Hey, how would you guys like the following trade with Portland:
portland gets: Caron Butler, Mike James, Nick Young and Oleksiy Pecherov.
We get: Raef LaFrentz, Rudy Fernandez (or more likely Sergio Rodriguez), and Channing Frye.
Hint: LaFrentz has a $12.72m contract that expires at the end of this year.
Portland needs a stud player to contend for the championship in the West — that’s Caron, obviously. And they have too many point guards already (blake, rudy, sergio, bayless), and Frye isn’t playing.
We get a premium FA next year, an extra roster spot and get rid of some problem players.
Anyone else like this trade?
