LOTTERY ROOM FACTS
The lottery determines the top three picks, with the remaining teams picking in inverse order of their regular season records.

There are 14 certified, weighted and sized white balls numbered one through 14.

The 14 ping-pong balls are deposited into the machine and allowed to tumble for exactly 20 seconds, at which point the first ball will be extracted. Subsequent balls will be withdrawn every 10 seconds repeatedly until four balls have been removed.

For the purposes of the lottery, the order the balls are drawn has no bearing on the result, thus 1, 2, 3, 4 is the exact same as 4, 3, 2, 1.

In the event the machine breaks down, there is a second machine in an adjacent room. In the event both machines break down, there is a power failure or another unforeseeable event, the balls will be drawn manually from a basketball which has been lopped in half.

If more than one ball pops out of the machine at any one time, only the first ball will be official and any others will be returned to the tumbler.

Four balls are selected to represent one combination. There are 1,001 possible combinations. Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations based on how few amount of wins it had in the regular season. One thousand combinations are doled out, the 1,001st combination, 11-12-13-14, is not assigned to a team.

This year's lottery chances: Miami (250), Seattle (199), Minnesota (138), Memphis (137), New York (76), L.A. Clippers (75), Milwaukee (43), Charlotte (28), Chicago (17), New Jersey (11), Indiana (8), Sacramento (7), Portland (6), Golden State (5).

Only two times since 1991 has the team with the most chances landed the top pick (Cleveland in 2003 and Orlando in 2004).

The Bulls became the biggest

Not quite true my friend. Love ya Bud, but, just 2 years ago the worst 3 teams in the league were Memphis, Boston, and Milwaulkee (Atlanta was the 4th worst team). Of those the highest to pick was Atlanta at 3. Memphis the worst team picked 4th. It's all about those darned ping pong balls and the percentages. No longer is the worst team guaranteed the top pick. Used to be that way but no more. Theoretically, although unlikely, we could slip past 4th with the worst record.

(I've re-entered the above suggested trade -- and a follow-up comment -- in the comment thread of the next post. Lets discuss it there.)

Hey, how would you guys like the following trade with Portland:

portland gets: Caron Butler, Mike James, Nick Young and Oleksiy Pecherov.

We get: Raef LaFrentz, Rudy Fernandez (or more likely Sergio Rodriguez), and Channing Frye.

Hint: LaFrentz has a $12.72m contract that expires at the end of this year.

Portland needs a stud player to contend for the championship in the West -- that's Caron, obviously. And they have too many point guards already (blake, rudy, sergio, bayless), and Frye isn't playing.

We get a premium FA next year, an extra roster spot and get rid of some problem players.

Anyone else like this trade?

You are right, of course.

But, first pick does give you the best shot at the first pick, and it does guarantee you pick one of the first 3.

Tom... worst record does NOT = First draft pick. Have you ever won a lottery, state, county, between friends? Lottery is the Cosa Nostra's answer to the numbers game LOL. With our teams luck I'd be planning (just a little) past the lottery. Unless "OUR" ping pong ball hits!

Tom... the bright spot was that Pesherov was a total "BEAST" in his 23 seconds!

sorry guys .... made me laugh anyway.

I wasn't able to see the game tonight. But, the box score tells you a lot. Basically, if JaVale had played Darius's minutes and vice versa we might have won the game (assuming JaVale hadn't fouled out).

Terrific game, obviously, from Javaris Crittenton -- I guess that means we won't see him again for a while, huh? Good game from Dominic as well -- could have been better if he'd rebounded, but really there weren't enough rebounds to go around. We let Philadelphia shoot an effect FG% of 60%.

Terrific game from Antawn as well.

If Ernie's master plan is to get the first pick in the draft, he is doing a good job of it.

I hope Crit finally opened some eyes. If he didn't tonight there is absolutely no hope for the coaching staff. If Mike James starts tomorrow night then maybe GetaBB is right :)
