Game Day Philadelphia
6:44 PM Dave Johnson checking in…possible DeShawn Stevenson could play tonight….team practiced here yesterday….Sixers are playing well…they are coming off a win over Houston and recently had a seven game winning streak and now Elton Brand is back…key for me tonight is how we handle their pressure…the Sixers will press the Wizards and that has provided challenges in the past…as Caron Butler told me yesterday…a win tonight would be huge and would provide a lift heading into a home stand…this team needs some joy and maybe a little home cooking will help….BLOGCAST starts at 7:00 PM…..and let me repeat this from the other night but…. I really appreciate every one staying together and keeping our basketball party going and listening too…..on the dial in Washington it is ESPN 980 AM…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia….92.7 FM in Southern Maryland….1370 AM in Baltimore…and on great affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke.
6:27 PM Dave Johnson checking in from Wachovia Centre…starters in….Mike james Caron Butler Darius Songaila Antawn Jamison and Dominic McGuire……Sixers Andre Miller Willie Green Samuel Dalembert Thaddeus Young Andre Iguodala…and yes DeShawn Stevenson will play

Its an unbelieveable story. Call me what you want, but everytime I see something like that the eyes get a little watery.

Back to the rookies/sophomore teams, please read Dave Berri’s article.
Kevin Love is 3d best rookie rebounder — in the history of the NBA. He is averaging more rebounds per 48 than his age, something nobody has ever done. He is also overall the most productive rookie.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 30, 2009 at 12:31 PM
No, not more rebounds per 48 than his age. A higher % of rebounds than his — which no one has ever done. I.e. when he is on the floor, he gets 21% of all rebounds!

Hey everyone, a few vids for you to check out before tonight’s game
Gilbert Arenas, is it possible to eat 6 saltines in 60 seconds
Comment from Jaba
Time January 30, 2009 at 3:41 PM
SportsWiz, I like the Super Bowl Predictions….especially what Pech has to say about it. Tried the thing with the saltines myself, and there’s no way you can
succeeed. When Gilbert is finished with chewing, can’t he say something about when he’s actually going to come back and help us be respectable again?
Comment from Jaba
Time January 30, 2009 at 3:47 PM
And another question: what has Mike James done lately that gives him the edge over Juan Dixon? If it’s really all about EARNNG the minutes you play, he should be sitting at the end of the bench by now. No matter what….I’m hoping for a win tonight! GO WIZARDS!!!

Ed tappscot has not always been a man of the truth. I cleary remember when he said the rookies will be taken off a leash. I hope tapp is fired soon and we get a no nonsense type coach during the all star break. DO ANY OF YOU THINK THERE WILL BE A TRADE IN WASHINGTON DURING THE BREAK???
Comment from Aj
Time January 30, 2009 at 4:52 PM
on yea gbkdc i saw that before. J mac was at a game between the heat and mavs, and dirk was giving him an autograph.
Comment from Jaba
Time January 30, 2009 at 4:59 PM
Aj- didn’t you change that name yesterday?….Who are they going to trade and for what? They are definetly not going to part with either AJ or CB…and what else is there that would really get us something in return?
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 30, 2009 at 5:15 PM
SportsWiz — on a per-minute basis, Dominic is the 4th best sophomore in the league. Only Noah, Moon and Horford are more productive than Dom.
I might add that JaVale deserves to be on Dave’s list of best rookies — he only counted guys who’d played 500+ minutes, and when he did it JaVale was just under that number — but not on the rookie team, as Oden, Brook Lopez, and Marc Gasol are all more productive rookie centers (ditto Marreese Speights, if you count him as a Center).
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 30, 2009 at 5:23 PM
Btw — obviously the all star game, and the rookie/soph game are both meant as *entertainment* more than as basketball. They are strongly tilted towards guys who shoot and score rather than those who rebound and defend.

Starters that should start tonite just a thought
Javaris Crittenton
Caron Butler
Dominic McGuire
Antawn Jamison
Darius Songaila
only reason y i say J-Critt is b/c we need some1 to go strong to the bucket
Anyone agree
and please get some 6ers in foul trouble early please

I changed my name at first because i thought i needed to have my original name to change my pic but it didn’t work. I guess your right Jaba we don’t really need trades we just need good luck with all these injuries.
Comment from Aj
Time January 30, 2009 at 6:00 PM
Tom if it were really totally true about the entertainment factor in the all star game then vince carter would have made it over devin harris because their stats are almost identical. I still pretty much know what you are saying though.

Do not get me wrong – I am huge Arenas fan, but come one now… if it hurts that badly, just come out & say so… at least come out & sit side by side your TEAMMATES… I can get on the metro & get to the games. Haywood appears to only have missed games when he was out of town with is wrist work, Stevenson & his bow ties were present & accounted for, & now Thomas is there in support.
Whatever plan the Wizards come up with do not start or end with 0….
Dang, what shall I do with my 4 Arenas’ jerseys?…

I’m going to blog tomorrow after I digest this mess.
There is no way that the Wiz should have lost this game unless management intended it so.
I fell sorry for the players. Everyone of them (dispite their short-comings) tries to win. Management should be investigated for fraud for the way that they coach and play the players…I believe that management’s intent is to lose. Some combination of Abe/Ernie/Tapscott is responsible for deciding that the Wiz will play just the appropriate rotations to ensure our loss. I stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, with the way we’re playing we are not going to beat The Clippers sorry, sad but true! I can not wait for this year to be over, one of the worst I’ve seen sense the old Bullets days! Ugh this is painful to already be out of the playoff picture this early on! Well if Agent Zero does not come back this year it really will not matter, he might as well sit out this year. I have never been big on him anyway but at this point we can only hope he comes back 100%!

I hope Crit finally opened some eyes. If he didn’t tonight there is absolutely no hope for the coaching staff. If Mike James starts tomorrow night then maybe GetaBB is right

I wasn’t able to see the game tonight. But, the box score tells you a lot. Basically, if JaVale had played Darius’s minutes and vice versa we might have won the game (assuming JaVale hadn’t fouled out).
Terrific game, obviously, from Javaris Crittenton — I guess that means we won’t see him again for a while, huh? Good game from Dominic as well — could have been better if he’d rebounded, but really there weren’t enough rebounds to go around. We let Philadelphia shoot an effect FG% of 60%.
Terrific game from Antawn as well.
If Ernie’s master plan is to get the first pick in the draft, he is doing a good job of it.

Tom… the bright spot was that Pesherov was a total “BEAST” in his 23 seconds!

On to a west coast team televised on a tv station that resembles the radio shack version of the crystal radio set we “older folks” grew up with. VIVA the Blog

Tom… worst record does NOT = First draft pick. Have you ever won a lottery, state, county, between friends? Lottery is the Cosa Nostra’s answer to the numbers game LOL. With our teams luck I’d be planning (just a little) past the lottery. Unless “OUR” ping pong ball hits!

You are right, of course.
But, first pick does give you the best shot at the first pick, and it does guarantee you pick one of the first 3.

Hey, how would you guys like the following trade with Portland:
portland gets: Caron Butler, Mike James, Nick Young and Oleksiy Pecherov.
We get: Raef LaFrentz, Rudy Fernandez (or more likely Sergio Rodriguez), and Channing Frye.
Hint: LaFrentz has a $12.72m contract that expires at the end of this year.
Portland needs a stud player to contend for the championship in the West — that’s Caron, obviously. And they have too many point guards already (blake, rudy, sergio, bayless), and Frye isn’t playing.
We get a premium FA next year, an extra roster spot and get rid of some problem players.
Anyone else like this trade?

(I’ve re-entered the above suggested trade — and a follow-up comment — in the comment thread of the next post. Lets discuss it there.)

Not quite true my friend. Love ya Bud, but, just 2 years ago the worst 3 teams in the league were Memphis, Boston, and Milwaulkee (Atlanta was the 4th worst team). Of those the highest to pick was Atlanta at 3. Memphis the worst team picked 4th. It’s all about those darned ping pong balls and the percentages. No longer is the worst team guaranteed the top pick. Used to be that way but no more. Theoretically, although unlikely, we could slip past 4th with the worst record.

LOTTERY ROOM FACTS
The lottery determines the top three picks, with the remaining teams picking in inverse order of their regular season records.
There are 14 certified, weighted and sized white balls numbered one through 14.
The 14 ping-pong balls are deposited into the machine and allowed to tumble for exactly 20 seconds, at which point the first ball will be extracted. Subsequent balls will be withdrawn every 10 seconds repeatedly until four balls have been removed.
For the purposes of the lottery, the order the balls are drawn has no bearing on the result, thus 1, 2, 3, 4 is the exact same as 4, 3, 2, 1.
In the event the machine breaks down, there is a second machine in an adjacent room. In the event both machines break down, there is a power failure or another unforeseeable event, the balls will be drawn manually from a basketball which has been lopped in half.
If more than one ball pops out of the machine at any one time, only the first ball will be official and any others will be returned to the tumbler.
Four balls are selected to represent one combination. There are 1,001 possible combinations. Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations based on how few amount of wins it had in the regular season. One thousand combinations are doled out, the 1,001st combination, 11-12-13-14, is not assigned to a team.
This year’s lottery chances: Miami (250), Seattle (199), Minnesota (138), Memphis (137), New York (76), L.A. Clippers (75), Milwaukee (43), Charlotte (28), Chicago (17), New Jersey (11), Indiana (8), Sacramento (7), Portland (6), Golden State (5).
Only two times since 1991 has the team with the most chances landed the top pick (Cleveland in 2003 and Orlando in 2004).
The Bulls became the biggest
