Why haven’t the Washington Wizards made any attempts at a call up for Will Conroy, James White, Joe Crawford, Walker Russel, Trey Johnson or Courtney Sims before Pheonix called him up. We need scoring and defense in the post along with rebounding. We are dismal and it wouldn’t hurt to even try to bring a D-league player up.

Comment from Adnanajanah
Time January 28, 2009 at 9:22 AM

I hope tapp does not go with darius, we need athletism from Mcgee

Comment from SportzWiz
Time January 28, 2009 at 11:28 AM

dcfats, the Wizards actually don’t have the ability to do that. They have 15 players on their roster and you can not go over that limit. They would be forced to cut a guaranteed contract player.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 28, 2009 at 11:43 AM

About Andray’s injury — I wonder whether asking him to play Center night in and night out is what led to his injury? He is not strong enough for that position.

Comment from GlingGling
Time January 28, 2009 at 12:42 PM

Tom, maybe. He did alright last year splitting his time between center and PF, but had a couple “close calls” as well.

Comment from Jaba

Maybe Pech will get to play career minutes tonight. Maybe we’ll get to see how good he REALLY is. GO WIZARDS!!!

Comment from llballa19

unfortunate that blatche is out. He has obviously done his best in playing out of position at center. Maybe this will be a wake up to Tap that Blatche needs some relief from the center position when he is out on the court. He may prove to have more an impact on the game if he does not have the burden of guarding the other teams center.

Tom any chance you can give us a wages to win breakdown of the guys that made it vs. JaVale, Nick and Dom?

Comment from Adnanajanah
Time January 28, 2009 at 1:58 PM

Aj here and I can’t beleive darius songailia is listed as a starter tonite even though it was only the probable starters. Has anyone noticed that Udonis Haslem is only 6-8 235 and has maned the paint pretty well for the heat this year. Antawn is 6-9 235, so they are about the same height and weight but Udonis appears way bulkier than twan. Also, twan struggles defending the paint. Big ups to Udonis.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 28, 2009 at 4:08 PM

SportsWiz — maybe a little later on; that’d be fun (but it takes a while). One thing I can say is that Dominic is *by far* more productive than any other wing player on that sophomore team.

I’m pretty sure JaVale’s numbers are better than Brook Lopez, but he hasn’t played nearly as many minutes.

I’m sure all of you think O.J. Mayo is a big deal — he isn’t. And Russell Westbrook has done nothing. Eric Gordon went off for 41 points a few nights ago, but I don’t know what his season has been like overall.

The rookie team is missing Kevin Love, who was having a great first season last time I looked (at about 635 minutes; so that’s a while ago).

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 28, 2009 at 4:36 PM

Eric Gordon, in 1400 minutes, is playing at about the same level Dee Brown played for us in his short stint (of course Dee had far fewer minutes, so he might have gotten worse — or better).

JaVale’s numbers are a bit better than Marc Gasol’s. But, he has only played 530 minutes to 1325 for Gasol. Both of them are not quite as good as an average NBA center. JaVale’s big problem is being low on assists (.5/48 minutes vs. 2.2/48 for an average center), shooting more than he should, and sporting a low FT average. He does many things well, and he should be playing lots more minutes.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time January 28, 2009 at 4:41 PM

Gotcha Tom. Thanks for that info, great stuff as usual.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 28, 2009 at 4:47 PM

Everyone’s upset because nick didn’t make the sophomore team? Nick has had 4 or 5 good games this season. Overall, he is just terrible. He is an average % shooter (but he shoots more than average), he gets fewer rebounds, steals and assists than an average 2. He’s average in a few other stats (a bit better than average in turnovers).

In all, if he played on a good team, and they put him on the floor for say 20 minutes a game, they would start losing more games. It’s that simple.

That said, Nick is better this year than last year. That’s cold comfort when a guy is playing as badly as he is.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 28, 2009 at 5:09 PM

I don’t know whom to compare his number with on the soph team, as they don’t really seem to have any 2 guards. But, I wouldn’t say any of the guys they do have are all that good.

Thadeus Young played well in the first 1/3 of the season but has dropped off considerably. I’m sure Kevin Durant is better; he couldn’t be much worse. His getting rookie of the year was one of the great travesties.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time January 28, 2009 at 5:37 PM

Tom, I’m guessing you disagree with Bill Simmons then when he called Kevin Durant one of the few underrated players in sports today :)

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 28, 2009 at 5:42 PM

Durant? What a joke! Last year, Kevin shot the ball 1366 times in 2768 minutes (that’s a shot every 2 minutes of playing time!) and went to the line 448 times. Out of all that, he managed 1624 points. In those 2768 minutes, he pulled down less than 350 rebounds and turned it over 250 times.

You like? You want that guy on your team?

Comment from Aj
Time January 28, 2009 at 6:07 PM

What does tapp really have against Javale Mcgee and Juan Dixon? They can only help and Javale’s development is going to be vitale if our big men keep getting injured. Juan is such a class act but I will not be suprised if he wants out. Jason I will do the same if Darius gets big minutes.

It’s easy to see why to like JaVale and why he drives you nuts. When he gets the ball off the board, he almost *always* shoots — no matter how impossible the situation. The result, often, is that the other team winds up w/ the ball. If he’d just learn to turn and get the ball out, he’d up his numbers and help his team.

I agree Tom, McGee forces shots. Better from there than from outside, but he still needs to learn good choices between shooting and kicking out. Maybe he’s not used to opponents who can block his shot.

Pecherov can rebound. And if he’s coordinated enough to hit threes he ought to be able to learn some inside moves and be effective inside. I understand he doesn’t mind being physical.

A telling point in leadership during this game:

Juan Dixon who has been on the bench for ??? games was telling AJ and CB what to do…and they set ghost picks…lol….

Comment from Tom Mandel

I thought they played with great intensity through the middle of the 3d quarter. They’d have had a nice lead except for turnovers. I imagine that when things start to go south in a game, it must be hard to believe in yourselves.

We also just don’t have enough good players. Juan is not a good player, neither is Mike James. Nick is… fun to watch once in a while, but he doesn’t help you win a game at all, not one bit. JaVale is raw; he makes *lots* of mistakes. Pech is to forget. Darius — how many minutes do you think he’d get on a good team? Critt might turn out ok, but from tonight it was obvious that you can’t depend on him yet.

Right now, we have 3 good NBA players: Antawn, Caron and Dominic. JaVale, raw as he is, is our next best player. I don’t know what anyone could do w/ our roster right now.

Hollins said having the permanent title rather than the interim tag will enable him to install a system.

“Any time there’s an interim tag in front of someone’s name, the players feel like it’s the substitute teacher. They feel like it’s time to play, and they don’t have to do their work the same way,” Hollins said.

“No matter how hard you try, there’s always a few who aren’t going to be on board because they know you’re not truly the boss.”

Look, we have 15 players. 5 of them are injured. 4 of tehm — Pecherov, McGee, Crittenton and Nick — are unproven raw young players who will not win games for you. 2, Dixon and James, are marginal veterans who have *never* regularly commanded extensive minutes. 1, Songaila, is a heady vet who would be 9th or 10th player on most teams.

That leaves 3 guys who play NBA caliber ball. Tonight, those guys did their very best on the road against a team with a winning record.

It appears that the Wizards give up as soon as things are not going their way… how else can you explain continous possessions with no points or even rebounds to show for it?

I think with guidance, the Critter (Yeah, that is my name for him…) will be an asset to the team. He runs the ball from one side of the court to the other in what appears to be under 5 seconds… McGuire is MUCH better – his sophmore year, not much exposure last season. Mike James – well, when he cared he did much better. But now I think he leads the charge of “scrap it” (w/ Jamision not too far behind). Blatche has shown that he can play with the big boys. Dixon… I cannot figure out/recall why he was put in time out way back when…

I really did not see the season going down like this. yes, I did shed a tear or two or three when Hawyood got hurt, but what we are seeing here is a result that far exceeds news that one player will be out for an extended period of time (I am an Areanas fan, but I am also no fool – he has not been a factor for over a season now).

Going to my bed. I am really battling with myself – will Saturday’s game be my last? With this economy, I need to make better decisions & a night at at Wizards’ game with my girls is no longer a fun thing to do… :-(

I’ll break this down on one level. When MJ first came, his driving and kicking it out was working, now he’s jacking up jumpers, and stays in the game. JCritt comes in and does well, shoots one jumper and is done.
Let the true point guard stay in and learn the game. Rondo was green, Chalmers is green, just to name a few. This he’s too young or he’s winded or he hasn’t earned it yet, to describe why they don’t get time is ludicrous (and not the rapper).
We need our coach of the future to come on in and stabilize things (rational decisions) that doesn’t have everyone wondering WTF…LOL…and i’m out.

I wouldn’t let Tapscott coach a pre-school hop-scotch team, let alone a NBA basketball team.

He has no idea of how the game is played and he is constantly talking about “I and Me”..they let me down” and “they don’t listen to me”. Me, me, me…Hey Tap wake up, it is NOT about you. Nobody gives a pig’s snout about you. We just want to enjoy NBA basketball where the home team has a chance to win…that’s entertainment.

dcbutler357, I agree. Next year’s coach should be appointed during the All-star break so that he can get to know the team and start to install some type of NBA offense and NBA defense (everyone knows we currently have neither). It doesn’t matter if we win another game the rest of the way.

Ernie G. – If your son was a good b-ball player in high school would you want him to be playing for Tap, or would you transfer him to a school with a real coach?

I agree with most of the other posts, so there is no sense reiterating what everyone can already see.

dcbutler357 – I love the “ghost picks”. You are absolutely right. CB and AJ don’t want to play team basketball. I’m not sure about AJ, but I’m fairly sure that CB is playing for a shot at the all-star team (FAT chance, and he doesn’t deserve it). Both of these guys set the “ghost pick” and immediately roll to the basket hoping for the easy layup. The man with the ball has to figure out how to beat the double-team on his own. They are focused on passing the ball to each other. I lost count of how many times other players were wide open and both #3 and #4 ignored them.

AJ and CB both have a nice offensive game. However, AJ can’t play “D” to save his life; CB doesn’t seem to care about any “D” unless it involves a steal. Limit their time; don’t risk injury; play the future – AB (when he recovers – until then play Pech) ,DM,NY,JM, JC until they drop.

I disagree about the squad having only three NBA caliber ball players, which is summized to be the biggest problem. Clearly, the biggest immediate problem is coaching or the lack thereof and the lack of direction of this organization. This coaching staff inclusive of the bench assistants are incompetent and so is Grunfeld. The whole culture of this organization is screwed up and it was simply a matter of time before the organization was going to implode and it has imploded. To get blown out by a very mediocre Miami team (with one All Star).

Tonight we saw Caron Butler and Antwain Jamison play one of the more selfish basketball games (even at the NBA level) and the coaching staff was powerless or complicit. The proof of their value is in the records, its that simple. They are both highly overrated.

Tonight when McGee would have benefited from the confidence boost of a start, Tapscott went with Songalia (and I truly like Songalia). BIG PICTURE!!!

When I watch McGee now it is like he is not the same player as when Eddie Jordan was here. Tapscott has took this kid from an athletic and assertive ballplayer to a tentative ghost of what he started out to be. Part of caoching is player development. And on 9-36 squads that has to be your first prority. Some of his deficiencies can be blamed on rawness but poor coaching plays a big role in this kids regression. Tapscott has to be the only coach to confuse basketball players on basic man to man defense.

At any level, confidence is critical. Hell Nick Young is so bad he is dribbling balls off his own feet.

It seems to me you have a franchise that is run by Arenas, Butler and Jamison, who basically do what the hell they want to. The organization conned the fans with the Arenas injury return and can’t even tell us when he might return even if he is healthy. I firmly believe that Butler and Jamison have a large part in deciding rotations (no other coach in the league would play these guys this much).

The bottom line is that not only must the franchise be cleansed of Tapscott and his crew but I don’t see how you can attract a strong teaching coach with Grunfeld at the helm. None of the veterans on this team takes management serious. This is an attractive franchise in the best city in the country, our new coach might want organizational control as well as leading the team on the court.

IT IS TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE, I HOPE MR. POLLIN WILL DO IT OVER THE ALLSTAR BREAK. IF YOU CAN KICK AIR JORDAN TO THE CURB, GETTING RID OF THIS CREW IS CHILDS PLAY.

Oleksiy Pecherov was in his favorite spot — standing behind the three-point line, watching shot after shot splash through the net after the Washington Wizards concluded practice yesterday. After each made basket, Pecherov turned to teammate Nick Young to hoot, scream or shuffle his feet in an awkward dance he surely must’ve picked up in his native Ukraine.

Pecherov was having fun in one of his fleeting moments on a basketball court. On game nights, the 7-foot Pecherov is often relegated to sideline cheerleader, dressed in uniform and warmups mostly for show. Pecherov has played just 67 minutes in 10 games in this, his second season. And except for one game against Indiana, the only time fans at Verizon Center have seen the Wizards’ 2006 first-round pick is when a video is shown of Pecherov grinning and flailing his arms during Dance Cam breaks.

“It’s hard,” said Pecherov, who is averaging just 3.3 points and 2.1 rebounds this season. “I’ve been healthy, but for some reason, Coach don’t play me. But I stay positive. And I hope he will give me a chance.”

Btw, I’m not *against* finding a new coach and getting him in place for the rest of the season. I just don’t think it’ll make much difference in our record this year.

It’s hard to look at Daequan Cook, who is not a great athlete or player but who understands the game of basketball, can play a role and can fill in and give you some productivity, and not think of the fact that we took Nick Young 5 positions earlier in the draft and he can’t do *any of those things* despite having played nearly 1800 minutes of NBA ball.

It’s hard to look at Mario Chalmers and realize you are seeing a guy who looks like he will have a 12-15 year NBA career as a starting and productive point guard and realize we made *no* effort to manage the draft in such a way as to get him (in the 2d round!).

It’s hard to look at Pech struggle and get no minutes and not remember that Rajon Rondo and Kyle Lowry were on the board when we took him….

Hindsight is 20/20, of course. But it would really be nice to be a better team than we are, wouldn’t it?

Comment from neal
Time January 29, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Tapscott was a mistake. He’s a very smart guy but that’s only a part (and not the most important part) of NBA coaching IMO. Grunfeld took a shot with him and it didn’t work. But I can’t fault EG for firing Jordan. He was never able to get the team to consistently play team ball on either end of the court. When we had one key player out we still had enough talent to compete. But with Haywood and Arenas out we are outmanned. When the losses began piling up we lost confidence and things imploded.

I hear you Tom, about the player choices. But with a different coach/system the guys we have might be doing much better. I’m not convinced we’ve done worse than most teams over the long run.

My 2 cents:

Pech had what, 1 minute last night, he made a shot that didn’t go in, big deal, a LOT of our players do that, and yet he was yanked pretty much immediately. So, how do we really know if he’s good or not? I’m NOT saying he is, but shouldn’t we give him a little bit more time than that? What do we have to lose? Really…

Comment from Tom Mandel

Pech had 8.5 minutes last night; he pulled down 1 rebound. Still, I agree that he should get more minutes. 10-15/game so that we can see what improvements he can make.

I can’t take anymore. The powers that be have to put an end to this. This is the NBA and these guys make to much money to play the way they are playing. This is clearly a team that has quit on its coach. He is not getting the best out of these guys. The happiest guy in the locker room right now is AB, he did not want to play and now is does not have to play. This city deserves more and the fans, we are just sick. Mike James was just throwing up shots last night and I don’t see why he is allowed to do that and not be pulled to the bench the way McGee and Critt are. Let these guys play and make mistakes, I’ve seen enough mistakes from lazy vets. Play the kids, at least that will be a new way to loose.

James Slumping
Veteran guard Mike James, who was acquired in a trade from New Orleans in December to provide some much-needed scoring to a Gilbert Arenas-less backcourt, has chosen a particularly bad time to enter into a slump.

In last night’s loss at Miami in which the Wizards scored a season-low 71 points, James was two-of-eight from the field and one-of-four from three-point range. He finished with five points and three assists in 32 minutes.

In the last six games, James is 12-of-44 overall and two-of-16 from three-point range and while he’s not turning the ball over at a high rate, he’s also not getting to the free- throw line, generating steals (one in the last six games) or otherwise impacting games. Even worse, I watched him closely in the first half last night and a couple of his shots weren’t even close to being on target.

Not that the team’s struggles can be pinned on James or any other single guy. No way. Right now, this team has two guys who could be called legitimate night-in, night-out NBA starters (Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison), a handful of role players who would get minutes only here and there on a playoff contender and a bunch of young guys who are far from polished.

James 33.3
Jamison 31.1

What Will Oleksiy Be When He Grows Up, cont’d.

It seems that Pecherov gets neither assists nor turnovers because when he gets the ball he shoots it. That’s not as bad if you’re playing under the basket.

I think that his best possibility for earning minutes (unless we trade one of our PF’s) is to compete with McGee and Thomas for backup minutes at center. This summer he should hit the weight room and also work on FT’s and inside moves.

I really miss eddie jordan because tapp treats caron and antawn like kings. Last year on the road vs the blazers antawn was wide open but blatche waited to long to pass HIM the ball and turned it over. Antawn yelled at dray and eddie jordan sat twan down for a good 8 minutes. Tapp would never do that, we need some leadership on the bench and on the floor. NO one is too good to be benched especially on a 9-36 team. Which brings me to mike james, if he is hurting us right now sit him down. Also someone needs to step up on the defensive end since we clearly can not score enough points. I would love to see some blocked shots. If 6-4 Dwayne wade can get over a block a game why can’t 6-7 Caron , Or 6-9 Antawn. I think it is just effort and commitment.

At this point who cares give em a shot. The least thing that can happen if we just played the young guys or just play them more, it will build confidence or build trade value.

I think Jamison and Butler should develop injuries like D-Wade did last year. I think Miami just go to the point last year and just shut down their stars.

yea fake a knee injury and just shut it down cause if they only win 18 games then they will never be the same I think caron has already lost it cause he is “looking for Ashton Kucther”.

I agree, millie mill, that it would be fun to see those five start, and probably beneficial in the long run. The only comment I have is that only 1st and 2nd year players are eligible for the D. League.

the d league players are just to have a 12 man roster

millie mill — we have a 15 man roster; we can’t add anyone from the D league (not that it matters anyway).

What exactly is an “injury list” and why are Antawn and Caron on it?

scroll up a little Tom. A little “mystery” injury thing lol. You can’t do that guys. Even in the “old” days, when a player was on “injured reserve” his salary still counted. Just because they have changed the term to “inactive” the players who are on that list are still on the team and cost as much as if they were scoring 50 a night.

yours is a 17 man roster Millie Mill… can only be 15. That being said… I’D LOVE to see the lineup of Crit, Nick, Dominic, Andray, and JaVale together!!!

So you guys are telling me that we can’t add a 10 day contract guy if we were to lose another player to injuries.

Tom

I was only playing around with the roster. Right now we have five injured players. Two might come back after the all star break Blacthe and Steveson. Like I said earlier I think Miami shut down D-Wade last year when they realize that they had no chance to make the playoffs are anything higher that third to last place in the league. Right now our record is 9-36 that’s 45 games into the season more than half. We have 8 more games until the all star break. I can’t see us winning 25 games this year. Surely Butler and Jamison has something hurting on them that can keep them out for a while.

It’s almost February when was the last time we heard an update in Gilbert Arenas or Brendan Haywood?

Right Millie, even 10 day contracts count against the 15 player limit.

I’ll bet Arenas would be back by now if we were near the top of the conference.
