Blatche Injury Update/Tuesday Practice

2:35 UPDATE: Andray Blatche will miss 2-4 weeks with a strained left knee.

2:20: SportzWiz checking in….The Wizards just finished up practice and Coach Tap and CB3 spoke along with Pech and D-Steve.

Quick injury update. DeShawn Stevenson went through practice and didn’t feel pain, Tapscott said he looked very good out there. Lastly, Etan Thomas was reevaluated and he is expected to resume running in 2-4 weeks. Coach Tapscott said it would be another 2 weeks after that before he could return the court.

A few notes that are in the audio section . Coach Tap was asked about Oleksiy Pecherov and he basically stated that they want to see him play on the block more. Caron talked about maintaining focus and continuing to work hard. If you have any questions let me know.

I don’t know if anyone else on the blog has shared this, but as a fan I’m embarrassed; I would hope that the players would do something about it…

Please read this observation from the Portland media. We don’t get the REAL (outside) observations in DC:

“It’s difficult to imagine a team caring less about winning or playing the game the right way than the 2008-2009 Washington Wizards.

It started with the most lackadasical warmup routine I’ve seen this year, starring an assistant coach who was practically begging Nick Young to focus for 5 seconds so he could hit at least 1 15 foot jumpshot out of a series of 7. In the co-starring role: 7 footer Javale McGee, who, while practicing complex crossover dribble moves on the perimeter unguarded, was challenged by a teammate to make a 3 pointer for $100. He attempted to take up this bet but, before he could launch a shot, found himself running across the court to track down the ball that he had managed to dribble off of his own foot.

This scene was followed minutes later by another Wizard firmly declaring, “male sperm swim harder than female sperm.”

Later, the crowd was treated to Deshawn Stevenson, who had scratched himself from tonight’s contest due to lower back pain, shimmy-dancing in his seat (through the pain?) during multiple timeouts.

The Wizards committed 27 turnovers, most of them unforced; many were taken the other way for uncontested dunks. They scored 31 points in the first half. They demonstrated a practiced ability to hit meaningless jumpers during garbage time (from the middle of the 3rd quarter on) so that the game wouldn’t look like a complete embarrasment in the final box.

The final score was Blazers 100, Wizards 87.

Someone please save the game of basketball from this group.”

Anyway, I just wanted to drop a line and thank all the positive posters you guys got on here. I post on Wizards Insider sometimes, but everyone its so darn negative over there. Re: The Rose City article

I blame the negativity of the article strictly on Gilbert’s mouth a couple of seasons ago. Blazermaniacs will not soon forget that Gil basically quipped “I’m dropping 85 on Nate McMillan’s Blazers for his role in cutting me from Team USA”. Gil’s revenge tour took a beating as the Blazers came into the Verizon Center and whooped up on the home team (I believe it was a 30 point win for Portland). I think Gil was like 3 for 17 and came away with only 9 or 11 points. Things didn’t improve any better when the Wiz went out West and lost the season series to Portland that season.

Anyways, it’s easy to hold a man down when the man’s already down. Portland is labeled the next great team with Oden and Roy and Aldridge; so the last laugh may be back with us if they don’t win a ring. I don’t care for their petty comments even though some of their observations are probably true.

One big misnomer from the pregame warmup observation is that NONE OF WHAT THE PLAYERS DO MATTER BECAUSE IT DOESN’T COUNT. Does it really matter that Nick can’t hit a jumper for 14 minutes before tip off but goes off for 33 points? Does it really matter that Jamison makes 9 of 11 threes in warmups but goes 0 for 6 in regulation? The answer is no. Preparations are supposed to be done well before the guys run out of the tunnel and onto the court. Lastly, what is an injured Stevenson supposed to do anyways on the bench? For him to have fun and dance may help loosen up the suited up guys sitting on the bench.

Portland fans/media needs to understand that they only have 1 NBA championship just like the Washington Bullets/Wizards. And both of these two franchises won it in the 70s. It is almost a 30 year drought for both, so I wouldn’t be talking *@#$@ if I were them.

So, with Blatche out maybe a month, he’ll get to rest up well past the all-star weekend. Tap has no choice but to start McGee – who most fans want playing more minutes. This also means a lot more Songaila (who missed some gimme buckets last night) and maybe some Pecherov.

The thing with Blatche’s injury is that he was already grimmicing well before Shaq’s takedown (you can see it from the jumbotron after he made some previous baskets and rebounds). I think Andray already knew something wasn’t right but he kept playing. He’s lucky it is not a Redd injury – which means he won’t be back until January 2010.

I really do wish AB a safe recovery…

I really don’t try to be negative sometimes, but lately, I find myself favoring the coaches (but not Tap) over the players, and I actually wouldn’t be surprised if, in the future, coaches start to gain more popularity than players – which will be attention well deserved. Basketball has obviously changed in A LOT of ways, and I should be embarrassed to be a fan. Nowadays, players have been injured in what seems like “army amounts”; ‘back-spasms’ seems to be the most occurring nowadays, but one of the only players that I’ve seen play through his obvious back-spasms is little “white-chocolate” [Luke Ridnour] – - I love his work ethic – - Antawn’s also, because he’s just been a soldier throughout all of this, knowing that he has a job to do – true leader in my eyes. I love how nowadays, players could just sit their “injured” a**es down under all the millions that they make – - doesn’t all Americans want that; the original American feakin’ dream. I used to look up to these people – - people born with this God-given talent, set to entertain their fans, but maybe things have changed to where things are just becoming all about them.

I got an email from someone who summed everything up best (after I described to this someone how much I truly care about the Wiz players)…This person said: “They are the ones getting paid millions….I mentioned the money because they are getting paid (coaches and players) no matter what we think or feel, so I’m not sweating anything that I have no control over or getting paid for…” I’ve realized that this person (that I’ll leave anonymous) is exactly right. Why even care as a fan/blogger anymore. Non-resident/international fans don’t get the “luxury” of attending many games, but that’s life…I’m actually sitting here wondering why I’m not supporting the team that I have here…

i dont think this will hurt us much because we have very little to lose and like wizfusion said this only means Mins for McGee if D.song dont get 40+ i dont want to see AB go down but this same thing will happen to AJ and CB3 if they dont keep them off the court so much in a lost season we will be in the same shape next year..
and ill never stop being a fan of this team ever but there is no heart out on that floor other than CB3 and AJ there are no Dunking waving your hands yellin from the bench other than Dixon who never gets off it and its sad that EJ had to be fired so we can watch this crap go down i know one thing if EJ was the coach you would never see a Half Donkey attempt at the game of Basketball

I just read the Mike Wise “Praise Shaq” article in the Washington Post. At least he had the good sense to admit to having co-authored Shaq’s book. He has good reason to try to make Shaq look good in print; however, for a Washington sports writer, Wise has yet to say anything positive about the Wizards.

It’s a shame that none of the beat writers took Shaq to task for his dirty play last night. He has a new trick..he sticks his knee into the thigh muscle of anyone trying to dribble around him. He did it to McGee (and hurt him) and then to Blatche (which will cost Blatche and the Wiz 2-4 weeks). Those were not accidents. Those were flagrant fouls. They were intended to, and did, hurt a player. Shaq is only diminishing his reputation with that type of play.

I don’t know if CB saw what was going on, but once he watches the films he had better retract his Shaq
a– kissing and call him out if he’s any kind of a teammate.

All I can see and hope for is that next season has got to be so much better than this season has been. Could it be that the basketball gods are up to something? Now Andray is out of the lineup. Well now Tap has to play McGee. When I saw the dunk highlights of Javale it was frame number three that really caught my eye. You can see that there is definitely a potential for Javale to get bigger. Man if Javale can put on about 30 to 40 pounds during the off-season and we get a head coach who can come in and revamp this squad, man that would be something.
I believe that next year is going to be so great somebody may say do you remember how we stunk up the league last year now we are back in the playoffs and looking good. Gil wins the comeback player of the year, Blake Griffin is the rookie of the year, AJ is the sixth man of the year. Brendan has the guys communicating on the defensive end. Dmac Dmac Dmac Dmac stop talking in your sleep! Wake up! Darius is starting at center.

Rick, you are right about the psychological makeup of the Wiz. I believe that CB has had an awful influence on this team this year. It is obvious, from his self-promotion about the All-star game, that he is very concerned about his own numbers. He is not a leader, in a positive way; in fact, I believe that he is a negative influence on the younger players. I expected much more from him. He really needs some humility. I would trade him NOW for some future pick(s).

I pray gilbert comes back better than ever never to be injured again. Ipray haywood comes back strong, Javale and Dray gain 20 pounds of MUSCLE in the offseason. IM NEW TO THIS BLOG AND USUALLY ALWAYS READ THE POST BUT I CANT HOLD MY TONGUE ANY LONGER. WHAT THE HELL IS TAP DOING? YOU HAVE A TEAM WHERE THE AVERAGE AGE HAS GOT TO BE LIKE 21 OR 22 AND THEY’RE ALL MILLIONAIRES. OF COURSE THEY ARE GOOFING OFF! ITS TAP’S JOB TO KEEP THEM IN LINE. BUT TAP HAS GOT TO BE THE WORST INTERIM COACH EVER. USUALLY THIS SHOULD BE UR TIME TO SHINE. SHOW TEAMS YOU CAN COACH TO HOPEFULLY LAND A HEAD COACH JOB. WHY ARE YOU PLAYING D-SONG AT CENTER? D-SONG AND AJ SHOULD NEVER EVER BE ON THE COURT AT THE SAME TIME. TIME TO ADMIT IT FOLKS, THIS SEASON IS OVER. IF WE WANT TO MAKE A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT NEXT SEASON WE NEED TO DEVELOP OUR YOUNG GUYS. YOUNG, BLATCHE, MCGEE AND DMAC. THEY SHOULD ALL START AND PLAY 30-40 MINS A GAME. THATS THE ONLY WAY THEY WILL GET BETTER FOR US NEXT SEASON. CARON AND AJ SHOULDNT PLAY MORE THAN 3 MINS A QUARTER AND GIL SHOULD STAY OUT THE WHOLE SEASON ALONG WITH HAYWOOD. HOPEFULLY WE GET A #1 0R 2 DRAFT PICK AND CAN COME BACK AFTER AN AWFUL SEASON THE WAY THE CELTICS DID. TRADE OR RELEASE PECH AND ET . THEY ARE NO LONGER VALUABLE AFTER WE HOPEFULLY PICK UP BLAKE GRIFFIN OR THABEET. WHEN GIL COMES BACK WE WILL BE ABLE TO SCORE WITH HIM, CARON, AND YOUNG (NOT DSTEVE) AND WE SHOULD HAVE AJ COME OFF THE BENCH SO WE CAN ACTUALLY HAVE SOME DFENSE DOWN LOW. HAYWOOD AND A BATTLE FOR PF FROM BLATCHE AND WHOEVER WE PICK UP IN THE DRAFT. BUT IF ALL ELSE FAILS, STOP PLAYING CARON AND AJ BEFORE U GET THEM HURT TAP!!

Nice to have the young an old here. Lot’s of perspectives.

Good news for Etan, bad news for Blatche. This is turning into last year, we’re gonna need a 10-day pretty soon.

Frankly I don’t care what the co-caps say. Both of their numbers are down from last year, though AJ is shooting a little better. For that alone they’re consideration is hurt, even though they have good numbers in general. I can’t speak for their leadership, but things must be tough. I’m not sure anyone could have predicted the loss of Haywood would have such a huge effect. As with the economy, a team doing poorly can certainly have a downward spiraling effect.

Hey aj – I just read your comment, and can’t help but comment back…Not making this some type of “sap” violin post, but, I’m doing this because I don’t want you to feel like I feel – - well, I wouldn’t want anyone to feel like I feel, which is unappreciated…On here, I was once blamed for trying to “solicit” attention to myself, when that’s not even the point of me being on here. When attention is put on me, I actually try to deflect it off because that’s not what [my] life is about. But for what you said, thanks – I really appreciate it ;) . What you wanna do in life – you’ll be successful!! The bad thing about being too loving and generous to people is that, if to that person, she/he feels unappreciated, love turns into apathy, and generosity to…rage. Thanks for “taming” me a bit. I just think that humility in life is important; I just don’t understand why so many people lose that – - but hey. I at least thought that that’s who some of the Wiz players are (humble individuals), but I guess that true colors start to show during times of “opposition” right?? Oh well….

JUST WANTED TO ADD THAT WITH A DEFENSE AS HORRIFIC AS OURS (EVEN WITH HAYWOOD) JAMISON IS PROBABLY MORE VALUABLE TO US AS A BARGAINING CHIP FOR TRADING THAN A MEMBER OF THE TEAM. DONT GET ME WRONG, I LOVE AJ’S GAME, WHEN WE HAVE THE BALL, BUT HIS D KILLS US ON THE OTHER END. DOESNT DO ANY GOOD TO SCORE IF U LET THE COMPETITION SCORE RIGHT BACK. SAY WE DONT LAND #1 PICK. BLAKE IS GOOD OFFENSIVELY AS WELL AS DEFENSE. WHY NOT TRADE FOR HIM AND USE OUR PICK WHICH WILL STILL BE HIGH AND TRADE THAT FOR ANOTHER VETERAN. OR IF WE LAND #2 AND PICK UP RICKY RUBIO AT THE POINT GUARD LET HIM AND GIL BATTLE FOR THE STARTING PG SPOT. FOR THOSE WHO ARE THINKING IM CRAZY RIGHT NOW, YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVNT SEEN RUBIO’S GAME. HE’S LIKE A EUROPEAN CHRIS PAUL. AS GOOD AS CARON IS, HIS DEFENSE IS HORRID AT TIMES AS WELL. WE NEED PLAYERS WHO WILL COMMIT AT BOTH ENDS. I BELIEVE CARON CAN IMPROVE ON D. JAMISON HOWEVER, JUST DOESNT HAVE THE INSIDE BANGER BODY TYPE. NO ONE OTHER THAN DSTEVE AND DMAC HAS THE AGGRESSIVENESS ON D IT TAKES TO WHEN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND NEITHER OF THEM CAN SHOOT THE BALL. WHATS GOING ON?

Early in the season people started talking doom. I tried to abate the comments while defending myself but I was unsuccessful. Certainly doom seems to have come but at the same time I don’t want to see all the hate on here.

OK we stink, it’s not one persons fault. Trading Jamison is not going to fix this team. A new amazing coach is not going to fix this team. D’antoni is a great coach and he can only do so much with what he’s got. Financially their team is in a similar position to ours in terms of how much money is playing every night (though theirs is not through injury, but by choice). For four years we’ve been a +.500 team, one terrible year brings out all this hate. I hope the haters lose interest, why are they watching anyway?

And seriously why are we capitalizing entire posts… it’s so hard to read.

The Portland media comments *are* annoying — how could they not be? At the same time, the remarks about DeShawn, who is *obviously* a dedicated hard worker, reveal how pointless the whole thing is.

As I’ve made clear here, I’m pretty unhappy with Nick’s development. There would be lots of ways for him to use his time to better learn the game, and it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t do it. Nick Young is going on 24; he is not a baby any more. Look at Dominic’s development and Nick’s lack of development.

As to JaVale, now his time will come to bear down, w/ Andray out for a while. Yes, he is a rookie and a kid — but I’ll remind you that Greg Oden is also a rookie, and they were born a few days apart. Oden is not a kid, however; he is a man.

Comment from Rick
Time January 28, 2009 at 11:56 AM

I am a big Blatche fan, and as I’ve said in the past, I believe he is the future of this organization. There is a lot of talk about Dominic and Nick (both of whom I also like), but Andray is by far our most gifted and youngest talent.

I hope that Andray uses his time off the court wisely. He will benefit from a few weeks of not banging against NBA centers (one of which he is not!). His ankle and knee hopefully heal up fine.

While he’s waiting for that to happen he should be in the weight room every day with the trainers working on his upper body strength. If he was stronger up top he wouldn’t go to the rim soft so often and would finish a lot of 3-point plays.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 28, 2009 at 5:37 PM

“Gifted and talented” — should we send him to a magnet school?

Dominic is a *much* more productive player than Andray. But, you are right that Nick doesn’t compare to either of them. Dominic is a well above-average 3 in the NBA in total productivity. Andray is below average as a 4, and further below average as a 5.

You are right, however, that he is younger than both Dominic and Nick.Only Critt, Pech and JaVale are younger on the team.

Tap might try Crit and Nick in the backcourt, in order to see if their might be some developing chemistry. McGee must play enuf to learn what he needs to work on. Surely some plays for him to get some points and confidence can be run. Play Pech more so we can have rebounding and some three point shooting. All this must be managed by Tap who must explain exactly what is needed and when.

I cannot believe Gil is still out. What is the true medical situation?
