Game Day Orlando
5:22 AM Dave Johnson checking in…..had a coffee outside with Ed Tapscott last night…so European…a lot to be pleased about…able to win a game against the Cavaliers despite only 3 made field goals in the fourth quarter and 8 turnovers….as Caron Butler said on the radio post game the Wizards need to become a team that can grind out wins….or as Ed Tapscott has told the team…evolve or lose…the Wizards are no longer a team that can just out score the opponent so extra emphasis has been placed on defense and rebounding….oh and by the way we are still trying to work on the “crab dribble” theory…I thought I was out of touch because I had never heard of it..still as LeBron James said it was no surprise to him that it was another close Wizards/Cavlaliers game…on to tonight and Dwight Howard will certainly present a challenge…but the Wizards do not want to be hurt on the outside by Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu….and yes it is great the buzz about Gilbert Arenas playing two on two and we have been sharing with you bloggers that Arenas is on every trip shooting but I think the time to really get excited is when we hear he is cleared for practice….hopefully I can tip you guys off first…BLOGCAST..the wonderful combination of radio and blogging together starts tonight at 7…..on the dial in Washington on 980 AM…in Warrenton and Northern Virgnia on 94.3 FM…in southern Maryland on 92.7 FM…in Baltimore on1370 AM.. and on stations from Cumberland to Roanoke…and we will try the LISTEN LIVE link that the NBA is struggling with or
6:20 PM Dave Johnson checking in…Keith Bogans is not starting because of a bad right ankle…rookie Courtney Lee will start instead..Bogans still might play….
6:32 M…update Bogans is not active..he will not play at all
6:45 PM…Starters are in…Andray Blatche will not start(team issue) but will play….so it is Mike James, Caron Butler, Darius Songailia, Domenic McGuire Antawn Jamison…..Magic will have Jameer Nelson, Courtney Lee, Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis

We need a tall team tonight, with Blatche and McGee in at the same time as McGuire. Thomas or Songaila in with either Blatche or McGee.
Sit Deshawn, play Crittenton more. Tell James to pass that ball, lol.

Bold predictions for 2009, Agent Zero will come back with a vegence and by the end of the season regain the “Take Over” campaign, and I was in Houston and met a Rockets player for drinks, and by all accounts Steve Franchise is healthy (both knees) and he is HIGHLY motivated to have a strong close to this season. I love both players and cannot wait to see them both in action.

I think we should constantly rotate bruisers in to play rough with Dwight Howard. Let Blatche play the 4-spot and stay on the floor. Let McGee, Thomas and even Pecherov all use their fouls against Howard. Make him earn it all from the foul line and stay put on the shooters instead of double teaming.
Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time January 6, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Rick love your thinking, I say keep Blatche at the 4, and put Darius,McGee and ET on Howard.
Comment from dcbutler357

Rick,
Good point, Howard has a low free throw percent, and by his last comments, if he makes one out of two, he’s cool with it.

Comment from dcbutler357

Man, we are so mechanical. JCritt should be penetrating on Johnson (he’s been in the league about 15 years (seems like it)). The lack of penetration doesn’t enable us to get easier shots (one problem). We don’t let our success carry over to the next game. We need discipline in trying to execute our offense. At least try it before saying someone can stop it, or we don’t match up well. Really need to get it together.

I am watching the game through NBA League Pass which is carrying the Magic announcers. Their color commentator, Matt Goukas, is lambasting the “Princeton Offense”. He is saying that it is demoralizing to the players to run it. All it does is generate a lot of wasted movement away from the basket while the clock runs down then at the end the wrong person gets the ball in the wrong place. He says it (the “Princeton Offense”)doesn’t work at the pro level.
I think he’s right. This team is better than a measly 30 pts in the half. That makes it a grand total of 42 pts in the last 3 quarters.
Comment from Bridge
Time January 6, 2009 at 8:21 PM
Yep, I heard him talking about that too and I must agree.

The Wiz run the worst ofense in the league. Until they install an offense where the ball go to the post they will continue to struggle. When did Princeton win anything. Get a big boy offense. At the rate this game is going we will get to see McGee for 2 minutes tonight maybe in the 4th.

If you give more minutes to McGee who do you take them away from? Actually, when the game isn’t close, I agree with replacing Thomas with McGee to let him develop. Otherwise, I can’t blame Tapscott for playing Thomas, who is playing well. McGee still plays like a rookie.
I agree that poor 3 point production is almost as big an issue for this team as defense. It’s an important part of the game.
I totally agree that we shouldn’t burn out the veterans. In order to really be good, I think we’ll need the young guys to be quality contributors. And that means they have to be experienced.
We should presume that every year we’ll be w/o one of our key starters. That’s probably the league average. We’ve done worse than the average lately, but we shouldn’t wish for “all the pieces”.
I don’t think you can blame EG for replacing Jordan. The team had totally lost its confidence and once that happens IMO it’s almost impossible to get it back w/o shaking things up. There was no guarantee that Tapscott could turn things around but it couldnt get worse.

Q. How does a NBA basketball team manage to score only 6 points in a quarter?
A(1). The coach plays rotations that have 1 NBA quality shooter on the court at any one time and the defense focuses on him.
A(2). The team has no real offense.
If CB doesn’t completely zone out in the second half, the Wiz lose by 30+. It was a great performance by CB, but he had no business taking/making a lot of those shots…for that matter, the coach had no business allowing him to take those shots. As a coach, you might want to ride the “hot hand”, but you also understand that you can’t go to the same well every time down the court and be successful.
We have some very good basketball players on the Wiz. It’s too bad that the team was burdened by both EJ and Tap’s lack of offensive coaching. The Tap experiment should have ended several games ago.

dcbutler-what else can really be said?? That is why that 4th qtr stat bothers me so so much, once or twice is a fluke, 17 out of 33 is a HABIT. As far as MJ, he was out played all night by Nelson and JJ, however all of the PG’s of the Wizards had a bad game. McGee not playing and Juan getting 3 min, in a qtr in which the team scored 6 pts, you bring him in with 3 min to go before the half? I try to be objective with Coach Tap, man it is really getting harder and harder.

LOL…If I were Gil and BH, i wouldn’t want to come back and play for Tap. I would sit back and get healthy, and wait to get a real coach.
This man can’t get consistent play, because he won’t even play a consistent EFFECTIVE line-up. His press conferences don’t even make sense. He’s focusing on the fact that the second quarter burying the team and that the team didn’t have the energy to finish. Your two players didn’t have the energy because you didn’t sub properly and two MJ gave up two layups, committed two turnovers, and whatever else went down. This team had a chance and once again TAP blew it. Same thing, different day…..I’LL BE SO GLAD WHEN HIS TENURE IS OVER.

getabigboy-I agree with you, when we put up 6 pts in the 2nd, aafter launching jumper after jumper, all I can say is wow. When every game we have 0 sub’s in the 1st qtr and play your bench in spot minutes without mixing up the match ups, is beyond me. To me Tap is esentially saying to the bench, I do not trust you on the court and I would rather ride the starters till the wheels fall off.
Neal-ET has been playing well, Darius had 5 fouls in the 1st half, McGee should have got the call, Blatche did not start and needs to play close to 30 minutes a night. We need to get a mix of different line ups, with what we have been doing here latley how can we expect a different result?

If Jr. is really coaching this team, put him out front. Let’s see what he can do.

dcbutler-rotations, rotations, rotations, and situational sub’s are all but missing. Blatche is a low post threat, the entire team is a jump shooting team (except ET, Haywood and McGee) we need a low post threat in the WORST way. Our offense comes way to hard, as my coach would say live by the J, die by the J. So when they fall we win, when they do not we lose. How hard is it to game plan for a one dimensional team?
Dixon needs to play more, McGee needs to play more. I have watched JCRITT he is not ready yet, let him continue to get reps until he is confident. Blatche needs minutes, and Nick needs to play his game, so many people are in his ear he is not attacking, he needs to post and slash then get his J going. And work on filling out the STAT sheet.

I hear you dcbutler. This team needs some life. I think that AJ and CB in their attempt to make the “kids” grow up have taken away some of that young spirit. We need Gil’s enthusiasm, fortiture, guts, confidence, fun-loving spirit to get this team going. We appear to be a very old YOUNG team.

IMO McGee will never have a favorable match up, he is just a baller. That is why he needs to play, he will make mistakes (all players do) however he will give you energy and effort, his confidence is shot, and only playing time will get it back. Maybe he can get some run on All Star weekend Rookies vs Sophmore game, lol

It was a good trade, but there is no discipline on the team. Meaning MJ can penetrate and dish or get to the rim. That should be his main objective. This was a game where the matchup dictated more time for JD because of Nelson’s quickness, since they want to preach matchups so much….BAD COACHING lost this one.

JeffM,
I’d still rather have James than AD running the offense. At least James doesn’t slow the game to a halt. He attacks the basket; he has a decent outside shot. I think that he is anxious to prove himself but is playing too “excited”.
If we had a real offense that allowed scorers to get the ball in the best position to be successful, I believe James would be very valuable.

I respect your points on James, I really do. I watch him trying to run the point, he is not the answer. I look at his turn overs and over all decisions out there, nothing against him he is a scorer. That is why I say it was not a good trade thus far, there is no ball movement and when your SG or SF leads the team night in and night out in assists, we have a problem Houston, lol. Run high pick n roll, trap more on Defense (it requires McGee to play) And try to get 4 passes on offense and work it to the open man, no matter who he is (hey they get pais too) We have lost the priciplies of team basketball, it is one one basketball and jumpers.

Guys none of the people we have playing point guard really have a good enough handle to play the position. They would drive to the rim more if they didn’t get the ball stolen so often I think

Grif-that is my point and why I do not like the trade, we really need a pass first guard, the reason I scream for Juan because out of all that we have, he actually gets us into some kind of offensive sets and can score. When the Wizards shoot 12 FT’s in a 48 min game, that tells me we do not attacj the rim. And most guards in the NBA can get into the lane and create something?
And the Magic team shot 20 FT’s and 10-26 from the 3pt line, we have a lot of holes on this ship, I wonder how many free fingers we have left?

Hey guys… Circus Act of Game
Tap doing the bunny hop in the first quarter-Priceless
Yeah that was a trainwreck of a game but I want to point out one thing.
At around 7:29 in the third quarter Mike James tried to do a layup and thought he was fouled.
He had a little fit…He was stumping and screaming like a two year old…
I know why he needed Super Nanny LMAO.
Phil Hubbard was on the bench trying to get him to run down to the other end. It was classic…
It represented our team very poorly-it kind of expressed how out of control we are.
Till next game…
Come On Wiz Yall are better than this.
Some positive, I am happy to see someone stepped up in the second half..Thx Caron-if you were not there it would have been a bad,bad game…

This season is lost. We are about half-way through the season. Brendan is just starting rehab and our 111 million dollar man doesn’t need to come back and be a hero (since they want to use that line also)….and for what, to lose in the first round again.

When MJ doesn’t run back on d, when AB does fade-away layups, when AJ shoots jumpers cuz he has the ball, they should come out of the game. That’s a big reason we are so helter skelter….no accountability, from the top down.

The only good thing about tonights game is that we get another step closer to mathematical elimination. For any objective fan , we know that this season is over and now the key is to determine where you are going as an organization to develop a competiive ballclub.
I’m curious as to what is up with Tapscott and McGee, he is pledging this kid like I have never seen before. It has to be presonal otherwisw its unbelievable. The bottom line is the Wizards are 7-26 and are focusing on the wrong vision going forward. In the larger scheme of things if they win a few less games and give their younger guys heavier minutes, that will spell progress
First step is to determine not only who will be the coach and also who will be incharge of player development. This group has done more damage than lose games it has degraded the development of its two best young atheletes.
Look at our caching staff and compare it to any successful team. You got Tapscott, Wes Unseld and Phil Hubbard. To the best of my knowledge niether Tapscott or Wes Unsweld Jr. have coached at a major level nor have they played at a major level. I’m curious as to whatcould have been the thinking behind hiring Tapscott. Not to be redundant but this Tapscott experiment must end soon. His veteran philosophy is absolutely ridiculous..
Tonights gane was indicative of a team that had no vision or philosophy as to what they were trying to accomplish. The offense was Caron is hot lets give it to him every time and every one else stand around and watch. I knew that we were going to lose because sooner or later he was going to miss. Almost wins and first round playoff series are not models of success for a NBA franchise. There was no interior defense as Jameer Nelson got to the rim on 4 of 5 possessions late in the game. Darius is a reliable heady player but he is not capable of defendding the rim.
The All Star break is a perfect time to bring in a new coach and new staff so that they can begin to implement their offense and get the players that are going to be a part of this organization.
If you do this then it makes sense to bring Gilbert back and Brendon Haywood so that w can start to rebuild our team. Otheriwse what is the point to risk injury to these guys and further confuse an already confusing situation. I mean really what happens when Gil comes back. Will Gil, cARON AND aNTWAIN TAKE TURNS SHOOTING THE BALL on offense.
They got to change the entire staff and bring in real basketball guys. This squad now reminds me of the Clippers, nice pieces on paper but totally dysfunctional.

JeffM, I don’t think that MJames is the answer, but he is a far better choice that AD. At least he wants to run with the ball. With Gil, the Wiz used to create offense by pushing the ball (like most other NBA teams). We’ve stopped running to play possession/small ball under the coaching philosophy of EJ and Tap. We walk the ball up the court most of the time. Consequently, we have to work very hard for our shots. If you push the ball every time, you will get a lot more open looks and the other Wiz will be hustling down the court to get into offensive position so that they can take part in the scoring opportunities.
Also, why not play full-court man-to-man defense EVERY time the opposition has to bring the ball upcourt? It doesn’t have to be in-your-face-pressure, but how about “if you mis-dribble, I’ll get the ball”, or “if you throw a lazy pass, I’ll pick it off”. That are many times during a game when the guy bringing the ball up the court does something stupid that would result in a turnover if only there had been SOME pressure. Lord knows that the Wiz throw some of the worst passes without any pressure…imagine a pressure situation.
We simply have no coaching imagination. Does the entire coaching staff sleep during game reviews?

Jeff now that I think about it you are right. Juan may just be our best option at the 1. James is too much of a 2 and Critt is playing too over his head right now trying to impress. Juan is the logical choice.

Jordan was the scapegoat and never the problem. I agree with that ESPN980 person flat out. The problem this season is pretty simple. In case anybody wondered why Blatche did not start, the Washington Post stated:
Andray Blatche was replaced by Darius Songaila in the starting lineup. Tapscott called the decision “a team matter,” but the decision was likely a response to the way Blatche reacted after being removed from the game in the late stages of Sunday’s win over Cleveland.
As he left the floor, Blatche appeared to yell something in direction of the coaching staff, and he had to be calmed down by teammates.

And look at this quote from the Magic’s rookie Courtney Lee (on guarding Caron tonight):
The quote of the night goes to Orlando rookie Courtney Lee, who was on the receiving end of some Butler as well. “He was having his mental right and he was just able to elevate and shoot over unoncontested.”

I was not saying anything about the coaching because it was quoted that he’s here for the rest of the season and that he was trying, but at this point, he isn’t getting any better, so I’m going to call him out, just like we call the players out. This is so sad, we scratch claw and fight to win a game, despite the lack of coaching and he makes us lose games, because he makes our chances of winning late in the games worse, with his “I don’t believe I’m seeing this” rotations.
May be his job is to ensure we get a lottery pick, and shorten the length of Caron and AJ’s careers at the same time (by running them into the ground). If that’s the case he has my nomination for COACH OF THE YEAR……He shouldn’t even go in the records as a coach

I know Antawn can’t score 25 every night. But the fact that he went 5-17 and we were still in the game in the 4th qtr, shows me how much this team has improved on the boards (and on defense) over the last 5 or 6 games.
Oh and by the way, Eddie Jordan was the problem, because he wasn’t playing/developing the youth. At this point, i’d try to limit Caron and Antawn to 30 minutes per game and write the season off in terms of hopes for a playoff spot (WHO WANTS THE 7th or 8th SPOT ANYWAY!! I WANT THE DRAFT PICK!!). There is no way our guys will make the all-star team anyway since our record is so pathetic.

EJ only had 11 games to adjust to the problem. TAP has 22 and counting. Both coaches had athletes that went out and did their thing to make the team better(Tap can’t even figure out the proper players to put on the floor, not even mentioning his personal issues with players(start calling him Hillary)) EJ can go and coach any team in the league right now, can TAP? that would be your answer

And if the reports are true about Blatche showing some passion about being taken out of the Cavs game, I actually love it! On Mike James — yes, every once in a while he has a terrific game (wch doesn’t mean we win that game, btw). In between those games he is a turnover-prone, low percentage shooting guard who thinks he is better than he is. To ask whether the trade was “good” or “bad” seems idiotic to me. What’s our record? What has Mike contributed to any of our very few wins? Antonio is certainly the better ball player, but for that matter he was no help either this year.
The trade was about Crittenton — and you can see me scratching my head asking why why why? He might wind up a passable point guard, but I don’t see why anyone would think he has big time potential.
The season was effectively *over* by the time we made the trade — now we’ve hamstrung our roster for next year too. Realize, Crittenton was available for essentially nothing. Does that mean he becomes a tradeable asset when he is in our hands? I don’t think so. Not too bright, I don’t think.
