Game Day Cavaliers
8:52 AM …Dave Johnson checking in…It’s a new day and in this season that’s the way we have to look at it…forget Boston and move on….we know the challenges and short comings….we appreciated the stretch when the Wizards went 2-2 and could have been 3-1 had they been able to secure the win Christmas night game in Cleveland….yes I am still bummed about it…but it is a new day ….Cavaliers are just plain good….have to play the same way they did on Christmas….have to get back on defense and not allow any easy baskets even if that means giving up on an offensive rebound….concern though about injuries. Forward Andray Blatche (sprained left ankle) will be a gametime decision for tomorrow’s contest against Cleveland. Guard DeShawn Stevenson (lower back pain) will be out for tomorrow’s game and will be listed as day-to-day following that.BLOGCAST–radio and blogging together–starts at 1:00 PM and on the dial can be found in Washington on ESPN 980 AM… 94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia…92.7 FM in Southern Maryland…in Baltimore 1370 AM and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link….and remember we have affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke
12:15 PM….Dave Johnson checking in from Verizon Center….Blatche is a go….so starters will be Mike James, Caron Butler , Blatche, Dominic McGuire and Antawn Jamison….No Zydrunas Ilgauskas because of a left ankle injury suffered in a win over the Bulls…so the Cavaliers will go with Mo Williams, Delonte West, Anderson Varejao will start for Ilgauskas, Ben Wallace, and LeBron James.

i think for us to improve we have to have arenas back
line up should be
arenas, butler, jamison, blatche, haywood
thats our best lineup hands down. no questions asked. thats our best lineup.
and we must improve our bench because its horrible compared to other good/elite teams in the league
every good teams have bench players who 1. used to be very good/all stars but are now old 2. are established bench players/role players well known in the league.
who do we have…
lets see
…
…
no one.
i guarantee you
NO ONE KNOWS WHO OLEKSIY PECHEROV IS.
so my point is
and i mean this since im a hardcore wizards fan whos watched atleast 70+ games every season the past 9 years
please.
we suck. our coach has no idea what hes doing, eddie jordan should not have been fired for some of our mindless players who still had smiles on their faces despite the dismal record. our bench is worthless. we need a jason terry, a manu ginobili, a james posey, a ron artest, a AK 47, etc. arenas has to come back and break gerald wallace’s ankles for not getting out of the way since arenas wouldntve been hurt if he had gotten out of the way.
and yes ill still be watching our games the rest of the season crying in agony.

Tuff one today, especially considering how much effort Blatche has brought lately, so not having him is gonna affect us a lot… Anyway we can still hope considering how they played us last time but still. Less men in the rotation means more fatigue, no Blatche means more Mcgee and I sure love him but he’s not gonna score as much as Blatche would. I’ll watch as usually and I’ll be hoping, see y’all later.
GO WIZARDSSSSSSSS

All this blogging made me read up on it….someone mentioned sending Pech to Dleague. That’s when Caron sprained his ankle. We have arenas and haywood on inactive. The person sent to Dleague would have to be inactive (only three total players can be inactive at one time). If I have erred someone please correct me.

looking at the minutes again there is no balance at all, I look at this and then look at the upcoming 4th. Under Tap the starters CB3 and Jamison play about 40 min a game and James about 30-35, this has to change. Tonight thus far 28 min Twan, 26 min for CB3 and James 23 min

Mike James, terrible game but we won, I have no issues with him, it is about the decision to play him 35 min (with DSTEVE out) and Dixon and J Critt available, Cavs drove all game (no McGee) Caron plays 39 min, Twan 38, this rotation with the heavy minutes is not a good mix, and it must change. We almost lost the game because there is no balance to the minutes played, I am sorry but I am so tired of it. I am happy with the win despite the decisions being made on the sidelines

Good win for the wiz. I was real nervous at the end. We still need to get a real coach. This team is so weak defensively. Cleveland drove to the basket at will very similiar to Boston. We have no exterior or interior defense. Orlando up next.

Game notes
Wizards PG Gilbert Arenas played 2-on-2 for the first time Saturday as he recuperates from a third operation in 1 1/2 years on his left knee. Arenas said he played two games with Washington teammates — and won both. The Wizards have not said when Arenas is expected to begin practicing. … Cleveland’s previous low point total was 85, in its season-opening loss to Boston. … Washington outscored Cleveland 21-11 in the third quarter. The Cavaliers shot only 25 percent — 5-for-20 — in that period, were outscored 10-0 over the final 4 minutes, and trailed 68-54 entering the fourth. … James had his first triple-double of the season in Friday night’s victory over the Chicago Bulls. … Butler finished with 19 points, 15 in the first half.

CB3, ET I think is finally getting his legs under him, and Darius has been solid all year. He also seems to play Howard as well as you can with great position on him, pushing him out of the lane. I just think if we get defensive with them by going big, like McGee and Etan (Darius), with Young, Caron and Dixon or JCritt (2nd unit) it might serve us well

JeffM,
We all feel how you feel. Ed just doesn’t get it.
I think it’s great that AJ is getting props, but I keep thinking of the year that Juwan Howard looked great (it was because everything went through him and we basically didn’t have anything else). I also recall that he was getting his shot blocked by six foot guards and that we paid him all that money, like he was a franchise player, and he was a role player
Gil carried this team and Caron and Jamison are VERY GOOD role players (i think caron is better IMO), BUT this current team can only succeed with it’s bench. AJ having a double double is cool, but if you jack up the ball this many times a game, you should score (plus he is good, but you get the point). It rolls down-hill, so if the coach isn’t putting in the proper pieces, then the end result is…………
AND MikeJames did not finish well at all, but since that’s kind of my first time not being happy with his end of game results, hopefully it was a hiccup.

JeffM,
I am still listening to the call in and two VERY good points were just made.
1) AJ is a “take” what the defense gives ya player and he has excelled in that area by having an inside and outside game. GREAT POINT
Also, on another note, MJames is not an end of game player yet. when the going gets rough, he got knocked out the game. We had Gil to handle those situations….okay, we’re spoiled…lol…

dcbutler-wow Juwan Howard yes I remember seeing many games at the Cap Center and you are correct again, he earned that 100 millon dollar contract because we featured him and it did not turn out well at all. I just think that confidence is so vital to any athlete, they have skill or they would not be in the NBA. That is my issue with Coach Tap, coach up the guys we have the same McGee and Dixon, JCritt and whomever sometimes certain guys just need the confidence from the coach, once they get over the mental hump, there God given abilities can take over (Blatche and McGuire)

dcbutler-great points, and to be honest I have seen more pick n rolls in the offense, the only problen with Twan is that he slips the pick so fast that it allows the defense to step out and contest his shot. Now give me Dixon and McGee in pick n roll, or Etan and Young, Blatche and James we have players that can execute that well, it is just the pick has to be solid, heck our best at it is Darius and Caron. Mike James has been given the green light and minutes, again he can score and he did not have a good game but I am not down on him. If it were me I would love to know I am not coming out of the game (with DSTEVE injured) we should have seen more JCritt and Dixon, and not playing McGee is down right awful.

lol…AJ is thinking about shooting the three, when he sets that rolling pick…lol….but he did pass up the three and passed it a few times, that was good to see.
Well, off to Orlando…maybe the guys picked up how to guard Howard from DSong.

Let me start by saying GREAT WIN for the Wiz but, I want to call some players out. One of my favorite players on the team CB3 has been awful at closing out games this year. Last year I thought he turned the corner when he made the winning plays to beat the Celtics. It was obvious the the games he was out that Jamison is a better closer. NO! I’m not saying we need to trade CB3, but maybe we need to look more to Jamison down the stretch unti Gil comes back.
Mike James- made some horrible turnovers at the end of the game but, he’s new to the team & is still learning his teammates so……….. I’ll give him a pass for now
J. Critt- I haven’t seen anything in his game to be excited about, his last two teams didn’t either. He played OK but his stat line was : FG 1-2, FT 0-2, REB -2, AST -zero, ST -zero, TO -2, PTS -2 in 12mins. I KNOW HE’S YOUNG & 12mins isn’t a long time but, if he’s going to get PT he’s got to produce more!
GO WIZ!!!

A win is a Win.
I digress we were extremely luck with 19 no brainer
turnovers. I wonder if we would have won if Softgaskus
were playing. I donot think so because we have no answer for his height except Brendan. I like Critt but he has to get with Agent Zero and Hopla on those freethrows because we strive for excellence in that department. A win is a Win so lets see how it goes from here forward!

Played pretty good D I thought, but we were very lucky Cleveland had a bad shooting day.
We choked down the stretch, as teams who don’t yet believe in themselves tend to do.
Jamison saved us with that FG. We otherwise did our best to lose it at the end.

I missed the game today. So I was somewhat surprised to see that we won against the Cavs.
My mindset lately has been on Gil and BH. Kinding hoping we can make a run in the second half if Gil is ready to play.
Man when I see the work that DWade put in to get back in shape after working out with Tim Grover in Chicago. I was hoping that we could have the same kind of results with Gil. DWade really surprised everyone with his play in the Olympics. Now he is leading the NBA in scoring and his team is playing good ball with a rookie point guard.
If Gil could bounce back like that it would be great.
Right now it would be great to see Nick, Javaris and Javale get more playing time.

A big plus to having seasoned veterans like Jamison is that they’ve been in so many close games in crunch time that they almost never choke. On the other hand, young guys like Young and McGuire ……
I do hope Arenas comes back soon and is as good as ever, once he gets in game shape and the rust off.

what a satisfying win!
i want to see blatche get more minutes at the 4 spot. that’s his natural position.
i also think they should run more of the offense through andray. he’s shown that not only can he score, but that he is a great passer as well. i hope his ankle is ok and that Tap lets Etan get 5 aggressive fouls against Dwight Howard in 18 minutes.

Nice shot by Antawn under pressure. Zbp18- i was thinkin the same thing. twan has been clutch for us before like in the milwakee game when he sent the game into Ot. We should rest him more early and let blatche do more so twan is fresh down the stretch… In The offseason antawn said there is no reason why andray can’t get us 15-17 ppg.

Today’s win against the Cavs is testimony to great athletes overcoming horrible coaching. It’s hard to argue with a win, but we were a wisker from losing this game after going into Q4 with a substantial lead. We had some horrendous player combinations on the court at various times during the last quarter. Tap almost succeeded in giving another one away.
For three quarters we were able to double-team LeBronze and he made the pass. In the fourth quarter, we double-teamed him and he just went right by both defenders to the basket. We lucked out when the refs called the walk on LeBronze late in Q4. That was a big call and one that usually goes his way. The ref who blew that whistle probably had a phone call from Stern tonight.
We absolutely killed them off the glass; everyone contributed. We boxed out beautifully. The rebounding was the key to the win…one and out.
Finally, CB has got to calm down. He is trying to do everything out there. Once the ball gets in his hands our offense comes to a STOP because the players all know that he is going to try to make something happen on his own. He had several guys open at various times and he chose to fake and spin and whatever and finally either throw up a shot or throw the ball away. That is uncharacteristic of Caron. Contrary to Tap’s thinking, we are much better off when the ball doesn’t go through either AJ or CB every time.
It’s too bad that Tap couldn’t find an opportune time to get McGee in the game, especially with “Z” out for the Cavs. Maybe he just forgot that we have this tremendous, tall, athletic center on the bench.
Finally, did Blatche hurt his ankle again? I didn’t hear anything about it, but nothing else could be the reason why he was on the bench most of the second half. Unless, of course, Tap really does have a problem seeing tall players on the bench.

Glad we got the win but this game had more suspense then it should have. The Wiz were one walking call on LeBron from likely losing. The Wiz were huffing and puffing to get a shot off in the fourth quarter against the Cavs and it was not pretty. The Wiz just don’t react well to tighter defenses during winning time. They need to set strong screens and cut hard to the basket. In the fourth they just stand around at the perimeter and get the passing lanes cut off.
Blatche needs to be in at the end of the game because of his passing and offensive rebounding. Because of his ball handling and passing he is a tough cover.
Other thoughts…
- Now that Javaris is now getting more playing time I can see why he rode the bench so far in his career. Although he has great speed, I’m not seeing him as any better as a point guard then Donell Taylor. To many turnovers. Plus, guards who struggle at the free throw line do not impress me. Bt he is better defensively then Donell – thought to beat off the dribble Maybe he will get better as he gains time on the court- I hope so.
- What’s the deal with DeShawn. Does he have a bad back or not. If so, why wasn’t this addressed during training camp. Did “Dr. Nick” Riviera (the staff doc for the Wiz) miss another one?

Let’s keep Deshawn no matter what, just becaise see below:
Wizards guard DeShawn Stevenson may have missed facing the Cavaliers with a sore back, but that didn’t keep him from heckling LeBron James from the bench. Wearing a colorful velvet jacket and bow tie, Stevenson jawed with James — whom Stevenson called “overrated” last season — for most of the night. Asked afterward about their exchanges, Stevenson said: “I don’t care. It’s whatever. I don’t like him. I don’t like that dude.”

This was a win over a Cleveland team that did not start playing until Mike Brown went ballistic. You can really appreciate what a superstar LeBron is when you look at his supporting cast and the record that his team has. We won inspite of Tapscott and because of Cleveland’s unusally horrible shooting. Sometimes you get lucky.
The coaching and player rotations were especialy terrible. Dominic McGuire, who played a hell of a game, had absolutely no business bringing the ball upcourt during the last two minutes. Mike James and Javaris Crittenton were both non factors on their former teams and today you can see why. For whatever reason Tapscott and Grunfeld are in love with Crittenton, I don’t see it. Getting rid of Dee Brown and bringing in these two guys was ridiculous (long term). Moreover, I am mystified with why Tapscott can not get McGee into the game. He had an opportune time to play him against favorable matchupus particularly against Hickson (another rookie). Develop your talent.
I truly hope that we will be done with Tapscott by the All Star break. I’m not excited at all by this victory (good teams occasionally get beat over an 82 game schedule i.e. Golden State v. Boston and Indiana v. LA Lakers).
All this does is reinforce the idiotic veteran mentality that this franchise had. We are 7-25 and would have to leap frog 7 teams to get to that coveted 8th spot and a date with the Boston Celtics.
The biggest problem is whether management will seek a big time coach which means this present staff will have be replaced. If not I truly get the sense of why this organization has never won anything since 1978. Will Grunfeld replace his buddy and find a real coach?

AB and DMac had the best +/- on the team tonight, a testimony to their rising play. AB led the team with 4 assists tonight?? I hope his ankle is ok, we need him.
DMac and DSong showed their consistent play, as usual (dsong did go to the wrong side of a screen, which led to a Lebron slam, but he’s a stable force for us)
AND NY!!! I don’t know what his stats say, but he seemed to have stepped up his play, and hit some shots at crucial moments.

JCritt did miss two free throws, but he blew past Gibson on the baseline. He was able to penetrate, but he seems to go east/west instead of north/south. I just wish someone would harp on penetration as one of our keys. Coach Hubbard seems to see the same thing that we see (hearing him on the post-game after the games), so it’s not like they don’t know what they need to do, they just need to execute.
E.T. is becoming the E.T. of old, so he should get more time also.

Big Z out of the game, no McGee (priceless) and Juan Dixon has played well for the Wizards this year, he deserves 10 minutes a game, JCritt played well in spot minutes (with Stevenson out) James logged just about all the minutes at PG and was not effective at all versus the Cavs, I try to be objective however I really do not understand the logic?

LOL…It was tight.
MJ has picked up the team since his arrival, but he doesn’t really deserve to be out there as much as he is, expecially if he’s not producing. These personality clashes, if that is the case, is un-professional. Dixon usually is a plus in the +/- meter. That mis-management of the reserves is what led to EJ’s demise….and Ed is following in the same path????

Blatche needs to play 25-30 min a game, he is playing very well. He is more efficent however at the 4. And yes Juan for the most part is always on the plus side, and during the stretch before the 1st DNP’s he was shooting over 50% and getting just under 4 assists a game, those moves have to be questioned just like McGee, just has too.

For some reason, players excel when they leave here???? Gotta let these guys play and get better when they are young, that’s the only way to do it. Our mgmt really needs to take a look in the mirror, or just watch how the other teams are letting their youth play…..Rondo was still green (no pun intended), and he played his ROLE at boston, Mario Chalmers is a rookie, as well as Beasley…no need to go on, but these players aren’t developing in practice, and then coming out and making their team contenders (okay I’m beating a dead horse)…LOL…
Here’s to consistent POSITIVE play on Tuesday…no home cook’n from the refs so they better put on their chin straps
and hopefully come home with a win.

dcb suggests above that Nick has “stepped up his play.” I don’t get that at all. In 28 minutes last night, he managed 2 rebounds and 2 assists, while putting up 10 shots of which he got 4 to go in. No, that’s not good play.
I didn’t expect as much improvement from Nick in his second season as I did from Dominic (I knew he’d come back this year a better player), but I *did* expect Nick to work on his game in the off-season, and especially to work on his understanding of the game. He didn’t, and you can see the results.

Oh, and one more thing about yesterday’s game…Man, I wanted to hit Lebron – but that’s no surprise – when he felt the need for “pay-back” by scratching D-Mac late in the forth quarter – - how female-doggish is that? Yeah, before his ‘daddy’ was ejected out of the game as a result of the justifiable D-Mac foul, where he accidentally scratched Lebron in the face, I guess he wanted “pay-back.” Our Wiz take things like MEN – - grrrrrrrrr!! Damn, I would’ve thought that Lebron suffered more than just a scratch with how long he was on the floor…Oh how I cussed at the TV when I saw that…then laughed, of course because of Mike Brown. It’s so funny, because last season, Lebron’s ‘victim’ (the one he TRIED picking on) was AB. Oh, and another thing about the game – - Stevenson and LBJ…they need to just straight-up take that drama to the boxing ring or something; it may be amusing to some folks – - the amusing that’s like: “haha, that’s funny…”, but for me it’s like “just [profane word that begins with F, with a ~ing~ ending] PLAY!!! I’m really hoping that some “jumper”-female didn’t cause all of this, gosh!
AB is CRAZY for this one: “I’m hurt, but not as hurt as I am in my heart,” Blatche said, seemingly about to make a deep statement. “I just heard that people no longer think 50 Cent is the best rapper out.” – - [Wizards Insiders] …..I know that I caught this kinda late, but truthfully, I don’t go to Ivan and them for a first (well, or second) source because of what they write sometimes. But I can’t believe that AB thinks that 50 Cent is the “best rapper out.” Lmao! C’mon now; we all know that that would be KANYE!; not Jay-Z (*cough cough – overrated! And not just because of the whole Lebron thing last season – - I was just never really a fan of his); not Lil Wayne (also overrated and just throws a lot of *similes* together, and oh, there’s his rap!). The stuff on the DC Sports Bog was funny too. See, that’s what I miss about our guys…I missed our CHARACTER (let’s not become all stale)

Good Morning my fellow bloggers!!
TomM,
I say NY had a good game because he took and hit some shots down the stretch when we really needed them. I am glad that he is getting confidence and that he made it to build even more confidence (he did blow me, with the 1 on 3 fast break (s), but it is his second year). Just like DMac had a good game, but Tapscott had him in the game and he made about two turnovers in crucial moments (Dmac bringing the ball upcourt and dribbling the ball out of bounds, or throwing it over Carons head….). We can all look at the numbers and say either one did good or bad, but it’s how you finish by how you are remembered sometimes

You really keep things from going stale…lol…..
50 cent is a joke, but his hits are good club music. Jay-z is about washed up (for some reason, i feel that he had something to do with “diva” by biance…silly song. Kanye reminds me of prince (deep artist). Lil Wayne has a good backing, but I kind of Like Fabulous, because his stuff is tight (hooks). LOL….Funny part is that I don’t care for rap that much because of the dis-respect for music now-a-days, but I listen to blend CDs and get all my music from New York, so I kind of keep up with the game. The real funny part is going to NY all you hear is MaryJ, diddy and Jayz, like their stuff came out yesterday. But I guess it’s like that every-where, cuz when I go west I hear snoop all the time, etc.

Dcbutler –
If Kanye reminds you of Prince, let’s just hope that he never walks to the stage with those “butt-pants” on like Prince did lol. Besides Kanye, I also meant to put Common, Andre 3000 and Lupe Fiasco. I pretty much listen to everything…except country (not that there’s anything wrong with country music). I mostly like alternative music though (i.e. Gnarls Barkley; N.E.R.D); (I also) like (real) hip-hop and rap – - people have their different reasons for not liking rap as much…mine would have to be, because, it does get pretty degrading towards women (when all women aren’t like that). What’s funny is that I find myself getting into Soulja Boy’s music lately; not so much because of last season, but because of his energy and my (sad) effort to try to learn all his dances…I almost got the “Bird Walk” down…Hey, there’s no shame in my game lmao!
Also, how bout that Drew Gooden? Started all this crap (in my eyes) as soon as he left Cleveland….And now the Bulls are fighting (A. Noc and J. Noah)…hmmmm; wonder if he’s in the middle of that one too. Don’t know if he is, but I’m just sayin’ – – who’s left looking stupid out of all this?? Not him [Drew]; not Lebron. I really don’t try to be mean to Stevenson sometimes – I guess I just want him to prove himself in his game.

GO WIZARDS, if you don’t hit your shots – PASS IT. (Antawn and other vets ;>). And stop shooting threes like its a 3pt contest, IT AINT.
