Game Day Boston
5:32 AM Dave Johnson checking in from frrrreeezing Boston….looking for a little deja-vu all over again…One of the highlights from last season was the back-to-back wins over Boston in January..If you will recall we had beaten the Celtics on a Saturday night at home and then had to come up here to play them again on a Monday night..It was clear from the start the Celtics were eager to avenge that loss…but the Wizards determination came through in an 88-83 win….Caron Butler practiced yesterday and should play tonight after missing the last three with a sprained left ankle.BLOGCAST–radio and blogging together–starts at 7:30 PM and on the dial can be found in Washington on ESPN 980 AM… 94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia…92.7 FM in Southern Maryland…in Baltimore 1370 AM and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link….and remember we have affiliates from Cumberland to Roanoke.Oh and above all my sincere wishes for a healthy and HAPPY NEW YEAR
6:42 PM…Dave and yes Glenn checking in…Glenn Consor is back in the lineup but DeShawn Stevenson is out with lower back spasms…Caron Butler returns to the starting line-up….have to rebound…in our wins against the Celtics last year we got to the free throw line…in fact in two games we were 27 of 30 from the line.
7:05 PM….Brendan Haywood’s cast is off and he is Glenn Consor’s guest at half time… starters are in…Mike James, Caron Butler, Andray Blatche, Antawn Jamison, and Domenic McGuire…..Celtics….Rajon Rondo Ray Allen Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce

…the last time the celtics lost 2 in a row and then played against a lower ranked team they crushed them with an ~40point lead. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen again today ![]()
I read somewhere Caron Butler will play again today, so…like Dave said, time for a little deja-vu! Beat the Celtics! GO WIZARDS!
Show us some love…especially in the 3rd and 4th Q please.

Happy New Year DJ and my fellow bloggers.
I hope you all have a prosperous and healthy new year.
DJ any truth to Starbury reuniting with KG in Boston?
I know that the Boston team we are playing now is a better team than the one we defeated 3 times last year.
Rondo improved play makes them more dangerous. Tony Allen seems to be taking up the slack for Posey especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Any news on BH and Gil?

Happy New Year Wiz fam.
Let’s start the year off right, with a win tonight!
Things to remember:
1) Ball movement- leads to assist (we need over 20)
2) Def. Rebounding- limits the other teams possesions
3) Off. Rebounding- gives us more chances to score
4) Off. execution- after you pass the ball cut hard to the basket looking to receive the back door pass
5) Defense- Don’t slump off three point shooters &
6) Set picks- make shots easier for your team mates.
7) Hands up- get deflections, force the passer to make a difficult pass.
No and One’s- if you commit a foul don’t let the ball get to the rim.
GO WIZ!!!!!!!!!!!

Keys To Beating Boston tonite:
1) Caron has to match PP
2) MJ has to get his 16+ppg and close to 10assists
3) Garnett has to have a subpar game. This also means Blatche/Songolia need to match him.
4) Limit turnovers to under 10 for the game and have at least 20-25 assists as a team.
If we can do these things above and AJ can get his usual All-Star Stats…Wizards will win.
I think the one thing that holds us back from winning .70 of our games here on out…Assists(share the ball)..rebound on the defensive side(no 2nd chance shots). We have to run.
P.s. Mike James had been a great addition. I hate to say I told you so!!!
Go Wizards!!

Tom, James won the Cleveland game for us, oh but wait the refs gave Letravel and the Cavs the most phantom fouls i have ever seen.
Regardless of how many games we have won, he has been a solid addition and no doubt he will be dealt again at the deadline or we use him as a 2010 expiring contract around draft time.

No problem Bridge.
Letravel? I love it.
I expect Boston to play very well tonight, and the Wiz as well. If both teams play to their potential, we lose. But if Boston doesn’t and we don’t choke at the end we could win.
Comment from dcbutler357
Time January 2, 2009 at 4:52 PM
If we play with the intensity of the last 3-4 games (minus the last game’s fourth quarter), we can win any game. TEAM play is a big key, that is the only chance for a victory. In and out offense, and cut down the opposition penetration……We have NBA caliber players that can do this!!
TEAMWORK!! Go WIZ!!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 2, 2009 at 5:19 PM
Without a doubt, that was Mike’s best game as a Wizard, and surely one of the best games of his career. Had we won the game, he would have been one of the reasons — maybe *the* reason.
Thing is, we didn’t win that game. What do you think Mike’s FG % is in the rest of the games he’s played as a Wizard?
On the other hand, here’s hoping he shoots and assists well tonight, avoids turnovers, shuts down Rondo, etc. — and that we get a W. That’d be great.

MJ has helped to add penetration on offense, he is making jumpers, and he has given us more hope than we had previous to his arrival. He isn’t perfect, but it’s more than we had (this season) prior to his arrival.
Some things you just can’t measure, and putting numbers to it REALLY doesn’t give his contributions justice, thus far. Keep the faith and i’m hoping for more good things to follow.

Glenn here: GREAT to be back!!!!! Keys vs Celts, keep ball in the middle of the floor, Celts love to force sideline, have to make the extra pass, swing the ball, keep Rondo in front of you, be disruptive, dont let him penetrate or look, no easy task. Have to hit the boards, no easy baskets, try one shot and done.

Young and Dixon are both 2\3 from the field and both played less than 5 min in the 1st half, please help me with the logic w\ DSteve out? Jamison at the half 15 shot attempts (4\15) so far no one else on the team with more than 6 attempts (Mike James 2\6) we need team play from the vets, ball movement and you have to play Juan and Nick and not Javaris (nothing against him) but Juan and Young can get there shot and in spot minutes are playing well.

rnbrown4, you hit it right on the head. Tapscott has absolutely no clue. Hell and I am beginning to wonder when Grunfeld will pull the plug on this experiment. They have turned this franchise into the reclamation project for old jumpshooters. The theme for the rest of the year is for this franchise to develop its young players (after it gets a real coach).
Tapscott violated the golden rule of for an interim coach, that is basically do no harm. He has transformd Nick Young and JaVale McGee into error prone, looking over there shoulder ballplayers. This play my veterans and give the ball to my make-believe “All Stars” and hope we can win a game at the end is ridiculous. No other team in the league with even one All Star has lost more games than us.
He clearly has a “thing”| for McGee. I mean the kid can’t get five continuous minutes in a 30 point blowout. As outlined in the Post today, this kids minutes and the level of his play are so drastically different over the past 15 games. Go back to the Chicago game when the young fella had 4points and 4 blocks in the first two minutes yet sat the rest of the first half. This coach has ruined this kids mental aspect. They get jerked in and out of games like walk-ons on a major college basketball team.
Nick Young was playing outstanding ball despite our record before Tapscott came. It is clear how bad this guy has messed this cats head up.
Despite the records, there is a distinct difference in the way Eddie Jordan handled his players and Tapscott does. BTW Ibelieve EJ would have had a similar or better record as Tapscott with the schedule over the last 15 games.
Can’t wait until the AllStar break so we might see some real changes.

What is wrong with the wizards? 2 people out of their lineup and they can only win 6 out of thirty one games. good call firing Eddie Jordan. I could have done at least that coaching the team myself.
Comment from michaelSCARN
Time January 2, 2009 at 10:26 PM
The team needs a true veteran to play for them that wants to win. When your record looks like the wizards’ does you can’t put players in there that just try to get theirs. Nck young may have looked good his first few games but everyone else looked like garbage. The team doesn’t revolve around getting the kid ready for the NBA he is already there. as a young player he needs to realize how to get his teammates’ respect and give them the ball.

Worst offense in the NBA (actually nonexistent)
Worst defense in the NBA (again nonexistent)
Worst coaching in the NBA (sorry, but it DOES exist)…
and now, to make it a complete sweep, what I’ve suspected all along,
Worst medical staff in the NBA.
What the heck are they doing (1) making Blatche walk off the court with no assistance, and (2) putting him back into a lost game when he has an obvious ankle injury.
This team can do NOTHING right.
There are SOOOO many things to blog about, but it all boils down to management. From the top down this group has no idea what they are doing.

rnbrown4 and lenman, I agree with you 100%.
As I’ve stated before, Tap is completely out-of-his-element and has placed the responsibility for success squarely on the sholders of CB and AJ…Not fair “coach”. AJ and CB and good players who have had all-star seasons and can compete at the highest level, but neither of them (nor both of them together) can carry a team. For the Wiz to be successful we have to have a coach who understands and can install a NBA offense. The Wiz are still a 1 pass, 1 pick and watch whoever has the ball try to do something. Did anyone watch the Celtics: 1 pass and EVERYONE moves…that produces easy baskets. We were 1 for ? from 3-point range because the Celtics always had someone in our face out there. The Celtics were unbelievable from 3-point range, It’s not that hard for a NBA shooter to make 3-point shots when he is wide open because his man has collapsed to try to block the lane to prevent a layup from the man who has just gone around one of our all-stars unhindered.
Damn, we’re bad!

One last thing…
What is the deal with Gil. People have paid a lot of $ (season tickets) in anticipation that he will play this season (to say nothing about how much the team has paid him). While I’m not suggesting that he rush things to get back before he is healthy, I do believe that the fans who are supporting this team are entitled to know if, and when, he is returning. This BS about our “crack” medical team evaluating him on a day-to-day basis has gotten old. Any medical person worth his salt is able to provide some prognosis about a patient. Has Abe gotten screwed out of $100M?

I missed the first half of the game (Eucharistic Adoration – first Friday of the month) but saw it on tape. Here are some observations:
1) The Wiz once again have terrible luck with Andray going down. He was well into the flow of the game. I hope the injury is not serious. It is obvious the Wiz really need him. After he left the game it looked like the Varsity playing the Junior Varsity
2) The Wiz are a really bad team right now. The defense is terrible. No one can stop dribble penetration one bit.
3) The Wiz offense is worse than bad – it’s boring.
4) Crittenton needs time to develop his game. He has the athletic skills.
5) When was the last time the Wiz took a hard foul on someone to start the game?
6) The matchup of putting Jamison on Perkins was a lousy idea.
7) If it makes anyone feel better, somewhere Charles Barkley is off getting drunk and looking for some sort of “adult” companionship . And he has the nerve to call the Wizards pathetic

- you are right on point about Gil. My expectations when I bought my tickets was that he would be playing around December. It seems disingenuous not to give fans an honest assessment of when he will not be back.
As regards young players gaining respect, this organization has always had a hiearchy concerning veterans and young players. Most teams are willing to go through the pains of developing young players (see Portland Trailblazers, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers for example). On this squad the veterans get the minutes, the shots and the opportunities. The development of Brendon and the ongoing inprovement of AB DID NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT BUT BY GIVING THESES GUYS SUBSTANTIAL CONTINUOUS MINUTES.

WOW!! I saw the end of the first quarter from home and the club had a big screen and it was 80 something to 50 something and I just stopped trying to look. From what i’ve read thus far, we shouldn’t be giving the “all-stars” a green light. But I guess since we don’t have any discipline, this season is done ladies and gentleman. I tried to have hope, but if this team didn’t harness the last three games and build on that, management needs to really take a look in the mirror. Okay, it was the celtics, but from what I’ve read, there wasn’t a plan in place, or one enforced…….THIS is really sad. Tap is just a “figure-head” and it’s really showing.
Well, here’s to next year…Might as well trade one of our all-stars and get something, since two of them are basically small forwards…and we weren’t going to win a championship with what we had anyway…..
A good coach may not have gotten us a win, but would have made us more competitive. Might as well have left EJ as coach and made him play the young’ns more.

I take that back; actually, AB, I HOPE YOU TAKE YOUR TIME – - the season seems to be getting ‘thrown’ anyway…I’ve always felt this way about the season, but I always try to be hopeful and positive. Well, at least we’ll get a good draft pick right?….that’s sarcasm of course – I really hate it when front offices try doing this…really unfair to the (current) players…oh, and us, the fans. The bad thing about trading 1 of our “all-stars” is no one wants them. Jamison makes to much money and is getting old. You might be able to trade Caron but I think only a team that need a scorer would want him coming off the bench. Due the offseason contracts we are hosed.
Tapscott is clueless. We need a real coach that imploys an offense that runs through the post. There is not another team that play the way we do on offense and defense. Most other teams would love to have McGee and develop him into a very good PF or center. Not the Wiz.
This go back to Wes Unseld coaching days. Wiz have not had a center for a while. The last I can remember was Ruland and Mahorn. Remember we had Ben Wallace, Chris Weber, Rasheed Wallace and got rid of all of them. We had the #1 pick and still could not get a servicable center.
The curse of Wes continues. Wes was a good undersized center before he kness went. During the Bullets glory days Wes got a lot of the credit but if I remember Elvin Hayes was hitting those turnaround jumpers in the post. Wes was either hurt or standing at the top of the key where he counldn’t shoot. Don’t this offense look familiar. No center in the post because they are at the top of the key. Oh that’s right Jr is on the bench.

We played the champs last night, and they are also one of the 2 best teams in the league (if not the best). We played them on their court. We played them on a night when they were hungry, having somehow lost 3 of their last 4 games.
If you expected something different from what you saw, that’s a bit naive. I was sure we’d get pasted, and we did. The Celtics are a *much* better team than the Wizards.
A couple of people above commented that Nick was playing well until Tap came along. No, that’s not true. He was playing terribly, and he still is. His shot dropped last night in garbage time, so the shooting part of his line looks ok. Give him credit for that. But, as usual, there is *nothing else* on his line to indicate that he played. In 17 minutes, he had 1 rebound, no assists, no steals, no blocks.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 3, 2009 at 9:18 AM
Even though we got outrebounded, if you look at our net possessions (rebounds plus steals minus turnovers), we did better than the Celtics.
We also had 7 more shots and 10 more FT attempts. Even shooting badly, you’d expect a closer game from that stat.
We also had 22 assists on our 31 buckets — a good ratio.
But, if you give a team an adjusted FG% of 63.5%, you really can’t expect to win. If you counter with 39%, end of story.

Despite the warnings above (before I saw them, really), I did watch the game. I note that even when McGuire is not at his best, he contributes. Can’t help but be impressed by his basketball IQ.
Crittenton had the best game of anyone on the team. He did have 2 turnovers, but otherwise he was solid, with 4 assists and 4 rebounds plus a steal and solid shooting in 21 minutes. You have to wonder how many assists he’d have had if shots were dropping.
Critt also looks very solid — strong and quick and pretty much under control. It’s hard to tell anything from minutes in a blowout, but still…
Ok, get this one behind us. No point in complaining about who got what playing time; it was in the loss column half way through quarter one.
Hope Andray is ok!

This team and players have history. Some players never change. As much as I like Caron and Jamison neither has ever been noted for playing D nor have they been the leading man on a team. That’s where Gil should come in. Problem is he is not noted for playing D. Champions play defense and do the nonglamorous things regardless of the sport.
This team with Gil has been bounced out of the playoffs by the Cavs because James has been allowed to go baseline anytime he wants. Tough minded players play D. They take it personal when the other player score more than they do. Until we get players that feel this way it’s going to be tough and now we even have a clueless coach who don’t know his players strengths and weakness. This after being an assistant and watching film.
With all that said GO WIZ AND BEAT CLEVELAND. I know we have the players to do it. Ed recognize your talent and use them wisely. We can beat this team.

1 horrible game in like 5 and everyone is goin CRAZY. We did kinda play da celtics. Out of the “ALL STARS’ twan and caron are not the type that can take over a game. They need someone like GILBERT to win games. Antawn needs 2 stop shooting three’s. I just hope this game does not crush our morale so we can beat the CAVS. GO WIZARDS!!!

That’s the whole point. The LEADERS are not setting the example for the youth to follow. How are the youth to get better if the “all-stars” are jacking up shots when-ever and how-ever they deem necessary. We don’t need them to “take over” the games, we need them to play team ball and not “try” to win it on their own, because every one knows that they can’t. Not a bad thing, but it is what it is. Ok, time to move on…

I have been a Bullets\Wizards fan allof my life, and I can honestly say I remember when te Bullets and Wizards had some rough years, but at the very least thay had idenity. I have looked over this year and I honestly am not sure what we are trying to so on offense and defense? Coach Ayers, ” What defense are you teaching?”, Dave Hoopla, ” Are you sill working with the team on shooting?” I have a long list of questions for Coach Tap so I will not other to post (to long) I understand that we had Gil and Haywood out, but I am sure that this team is better than 6 wins without them, and I tought leaps and bounds ahead of OKC! Hey Coach Thompson, would you still like to Coach in the NBA? How about coming to the Wizards and coaching defense?

This coaching staff kills the confident of young players. They don’t know their roll. I watch poor McGee and he does not look like the same guy at the beginning of the season. They must have told him to run from basket to basket as fast as you can even though you’re not going to get the ball. Oh don’t worry about being tired because you’re not going to play anymore. We are going to pull you in about a 1 min and if you want a shot get the rebound. That would be frustrating to any big man.
I’m a longtime Bullets/Wiz fan but I’m not going to another game until changes are made. I can handle losing if I see a plan to make them better but this group is clueless. Maybe I’m missing something. The answer isn’t the young pups don’t know the offense or defensive schemes. We went through that with the Saunders 800pg playbook. If it’s that complicated it’s not needed. Teach them the fundementals and let them use their God given talent to get us some wins.

Fellow Bloggers,
All I can do is just hope for better days. The only consolation is that we played the world champs. Without Gilbert and Spencer, at this point, we are worlds apart.
Keep the Faith
Beat the Cavs!!

dcbutler357, you are a funny person and showing your age…trying to slip Spencer Haywood (Washington 1980) past us as Brendan. Come on, while Spence would be an asset in his prime, I think that at 61 he might not be able to hack it…then again, he came to play! LOL!!
This is not to say that Brendan does not come to play. Quite the contrary, I think that, if healthy, Brendan would have made a tremendous difference in our W/L record.

Too many times they just drove through us, and too many times we left shooters upon.
Apart from that they shot with confidence and we shot like we were afraid we were going to miss.
The Celtics are a terrific team. Pierce and Allen are outstanding but what makes them great is the glue provided by Garnett, Rondo and Doc Rivers.
I agree – it would have been an ideal game to give McGee extensive minutes.
