if the damn wizards loss tonight they need to rap the season up and start all the new young players to get them ready for next year and find someone that will make a deal for Deshawn and Etahn and mike james and draft the best def. player coming out next year and Gil needs to play also this year even if we have no chance at the playoffs just to get his MOJO back and he stealin money right now lol waste of two good players we could have picked up instead of signing him to the crazy contract payin him like hes the best player in the nba money

great to hear more minutes for NY. i was really getting worried about his playing time. I say we play the way we played them last week (except the first quarter) and we should win :-) lets go wizards!

I have to admit that Dshawn isn’t his usual vocal or efficient self offensively or defensively but we can still make this season respectable for all concerned. First since we have a very young core coming off the bench then lets play to there strengths which is run baby run . We should be in attack mode from beginning to end! The basic fundaments such as fighting for every Rebound. Roll the video tape Tap show the squad some of the old Chicago Bulls tape with Rodman,Jordan and Pippen and watch how they scraped for every rebound and every possession. I want you to write down there body language, there attitude/swagger and mental mindset during all those games. The one thing that stood out was the teams can do attitude no matter what. Everyone had everyones back on and off the court and the captains kept everyone on the same page! I believe you have to look into the hour glass of the past to mode the future! Who can play Jordan ,who can play Rodman, who is versatile enough to be Pippen and where are the Scappers at!

mcgee and dee brown were starting and then playing about 5 minutes the whole game. combine that with stevenson’s horrendous play and it accounts for the 28th in starters points and 2nd in reserves. i’d be willing to bet that our starters were playing some of the fewest minutes of any team.

blatche starting and getting significant minutes will affect those numbers. just please start someone other than Dixon in the backcourt. Nick Young, Mike James or even Crittendon make more sense to me. And if Stevenson hasn’t played himself out of the starting lineup yet, what does he have to do to accomplish that?

Comment from Wizards4Life
Time December 17, 2008 at 11:05 AM

i just dont get why we needed to trade AD for James if you got N1 on the bench to score the ball an lets be real about it he passed the ball more than James the only + that i see that James may have over N1 is he played more games.

the rookies need to get in early and do a good job and get us a lead or keep us a good lead let AJ and CB3 rest most of the 3rd and let them run it out in the 4th

Comment from dmac
Time December 17, 2008 at 11:11 AM

I don’t know what the big deal is about why Nick should not replace DS in the starting lineup. has anybody seen our record and DS lack of contribution offensively. Tom I know defense wins games. I agree with you on that. But how long shall Tapscott let this go on. i am tired of the excuses the coaches have been making and some of the excuses the players are making for themselves. To me it is evident that we will need a new coach this offseason. To me it is almost like Tapscott other than shuffle the lineup around without inserting Nick. It is business as usual with the Wiz.
Now there are a number of coaching candidates out there. Avery Johnson, Mo Cheeks, Flip Saunders, Jeff Van Gundy. Patrick Ewing, Mark Jackson. They could hire Patrick and bring big John T out of retirement to assist Patrick. What is it going to take to turn this franchise around? Somebody tell me. People laugh at me and say you have a Wizards bumper sticker on your truck. Bad enough you have the Skins on your truck!
Still I am a devoted fan. But it hurts to see them lose the way they are losing. Even being in the lottery does not necessarily gurantee anything. NBA DRAFT HAS US DRAFTING THABEET FROM UCONN. ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT ANYONE? DO WE DRAFT THOMPSON FROM OKLAHOMA OR JAMES HARDEN FROM ARIZONA STATE OR CHASE BUDINGER FROM ARIZONA OR THE KID FROM DAVIDSON. THAT’S RIGHT WE ALREADY HAVE JUAN DIXON AND MIKE JAMES.

I think that mock draft is from espn.com because they have on a link on their website also I think before the all star break if Eddie Tapscott does’nt get the team getting a lot more wins than I might be time to bring a new head coach someone from outside the organization.

Love this post from WizInsider:

None of the young guys are lottery picks, what do we expect? We have a 2005 49th pick 22 yr old with no work ethic (Blatche) a 16th pick 23 yr old in his second year (Young) an 18th pick 23 yr old in his second year (Pecherov) a 47th pick 23 yr old in his second year (McGuire) and an 18th pick 20 yr old in his first year (McGee).
Then we have Mike James (has avg’d 11 mpg the last three seasons), Etan Thomas (not an NBA rotation player anymore), Deshawn Stevenson (a guy who in summer 2006 could only get a one year contract for the league minimum), Juan Dixon (would not be in the NBA this season were it not for the Wizards), Javaris Crittenton (4th-string PG on a Grizzlies team thats 9-15; also 19th pick in 2007 draft in his second yr, 21 yrs old), Darius Songaila (who’s out of position at well…every position), and then two allstars.
What do we expect?
Six non-lottery picks in their first three years in the league. Four players with zero demand in the NBA (Mike James, De-Brick, Etan Thomas, and Juan Dixon). Then Darius Songaila and the two all-stars in Butler and a 32 yr old Jamison.

I can’t understand why Stevenson is even playing much less starting at this point. Tapscott has been on the bench and it not a new comer to this team. So what is he trying to figure out.

Let McGee, Nick Young, and Mcquire contribute 18 + a night at least. Unless one is in foul trouble.

You can’t win with a shooting guard who scores 6 pts and 2 assists. Even if he is ok defensively. The Wiz are clearly not a defensive team so we are going to have to SCORE!! Please sit D. Steve down until he gets his game back.

DJ
I have to apologize for my fellow bloggers they know not what they speak but just want some redemption and are venting more than usual. The Wizkids have played 4 complete games this year from start to finish but the last game against Detroit was a prime example of getting it done from the rebound, steals, scoring ,and just getting it done at the freethrow line! The captain maintained control /flow by scoring and assisting, the other captain rebounded and scored and set the example by not turning over the ball in 38 plus minutes and the team followed suit. There teammates got atleast 5 rebounds and scored six or more points and played tenacious /solid defense. It was a total team effort and all concerned were happy but the team has to mantain this kind of effort to atleast have any chance away from home!We need that showing every night so what is it going to take!

Comment from dmac
Time December 17, 2008 at 2:35 PM

M2 I was not referring to the high draft pick as though we are looking forward to it. I know our track record concerning draft picks. What I am referring to is the fact if we don’t start winning some games we will be in the draft lottery this year. Even though Gil and Brendan are out we have enough talent to turn this thing aound. I just feel it has to start with management and the coaching staff to motivateand get these players motivated to perform at their very best night in and night out. I feel like the Wiz players not all but enough have got accustomed to losing. I say that because they do not even have one two game or three game winning streak this season.

Comment from dmac
Time December 17, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Carlos Boozer will be available next year. I would love for us to be able to get him. We probably would have to ship AB and that possible lottery pick to make it happen. I would do it. Could you imagine a healthy Gilbert and Brendan alongwith CB and AJ. I would make AJ our sixth man.
Wiz4Life I know you would love that.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 17, 2008 at 2:56 PM

M2 — that’s pretty funny (and unfortunately it’s pretty true).

Realize that the #16 pick in the draft, only about 1 of every 3 guys turns into a real NBA player.

Still, give Ernie credit for getting extraordinary value from picks in the mid-forties. Dominic is a genuine NBA player in the making, and Andray does seem to be improving (but he may be a perennial heartbreaker).

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 17, 2008 at 3:12 PM

dmac — trades have to match salaries w/in 15%, so no we can’t trade AB and a pick for Carlos Boozer. Also, he has a player option for next year at $12.5m, which I wouldn’t be surprised to see him decline. We wouldn’t be able to sign him.

We are butted up against the luxury tax ceiling. That’s why we had to swap AD for the inimitable Mike James for Ernie to get Javaris Crittenton, on whom he is high (why?).

The only guy on our 15-player squad who isn’t signed for next year is Juan. To sign our first round draft choice, we’ll need to let Juan go. Now, Mike James has a a @$6.5m player option for next year, so he isn’t exactly *signed.* But, unless he loses his mind, he’ll pick up that option — it’s a lot more money than anyone will pay him as a FA.

So… we are in a corner. We have 2 very tradeable players, Caron and Brendan. But they’re the heart of our team. We *might* be able to trade Etan and/or Mike, because they expire next year. But, we’d have to take back longer-term contracts.

Did anyone catch the post-game interview with Blatche the other night? He looked REALLY upset to me. I have to say, I think that is a good thing for him.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 17, 2008 at 3:26 PM

gbkdc it is definitely the most emotional I have ever seen dray after a loss.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 17, 2008 at 3:29 PM

Actually, it’s worse. We have $76m in guaranteed contracts for next year. If we get the 3d pick in the draft, he’ll cost us almost $4m. That’s very likely to put us into luxury tax territory, where Abe and Ernie (rightly) won’t want to go.

Look for us to trade our next year’s pick and an over-priced mid-pay player for a (hopefully) under-priced mid-pay player.

It doesn’t even get better in 2010, when we’ll be over $70m before we blink, and that’s for 12 guys (including re-signing Haywood and Dominic).

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 17, 2008 at 3:32 PM

I agree about Andray. And if he brings that emotional level to the game for 25 minutes, night in night out, we are a *much* more effective team.

Comment from dmac
Time December 17, 2008 at 3:34 PM

Well Tom it looks as though we been scrooooooooged with these contracts.

Comment from dmac
Time December 17, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Tom if we are in this shape contract wise then Gil needs to play the role of Saviour for the Wiz when he comes back . How much does he make? Actually if Gil can come back and resurrect this franchise then he will be on his way to the HOF.

Comment from vitality08
Time December 17, 2008 at 3:50 PM

I thought if you went over the cap to sign your 1st round pick, you aren’t charged the luxury tax. I think that’s one of the “exceptions” to the rules.

I am in Detroit on business and I am really going to try and make it to the Palace tonight to see my beloved Wizards defeat the Pistons. It is cold and snow is on the ground so if not in person I will be on the BLOG and watching through there cable channel FSN. Glenn and Dave (SportzWiz) I wanted to thank you for the mention above maybe if I am lucky I will catch you at the Palace, and Glenn I really enjoy how candid you are in the Post Game Report (Green Turtle, lol)

Now about the game, I think it is great that Coach Tap will take the short leash off of Young and let him play no matter, that will be great for this team, I wish he would do the same with McGee but at least progress is being made. As far as trades and contractd we do not have doom and gloom guys you really have to look at the contracts and there conditions and restrictions, if EG wanted to he could make some moves. And as much as I love the draft, unless a Tim Duncan type is coming out it is a crap shot, the Wiz do not need more talent with potential we need some vets that can get it done! Here’s to also seeing DMAC on Rip tonight for some extended time, should be a great game and believe it or not we match up well with the Pistons since Coach Curry decided he wanted to play small ball! Let’s have energy and effort and more minutes from the bench and get a great win in Detroit!

Somebody disagreed with my thinking that Brown would have been a better keep than Dixon. After reviewing the stats I agree that Dixon makes more sense. Even considering that Brown moves the ball a little better, Dixon is better at everything else.

Comment from Rick
Time December 17, 2008 at 6:57 PM

What Crittendon has is potential. He is 6-4 or 6-5 and fast with the ball. He’s got a pretty good handle and gets to the basket. If he develops his jumper he will be a solid addition to the team.

Songaila might be tradeable. He is a serviceable role player on a good team. On a bad team (like ours) he is just a waste of minutes. So trading him is a win-win in my opinion.

Comment from M2

C’mon folks… Potential. J Crit is now the youngest guy on our team. Be just a little bit patient. Not that he’s the next Gil but I sure do remember everybody moaning & groaning when we brought him over as a free agent.
J Crit needs to sit & learn our system.

& he doesn’t have “needs to develop his jumper” on his profile page ;-)
It’s just that he’s been a drive & dish / pass 1st type of PG. He can shoot.

I have faith that EG can get this straight. Didn’t he bring in the players (stars) that we have now? The injuries didn’t give him a warning before they hit. The current coach is trying to change things, and yes, no matter what the rotation is, it’s time for EVERYONE to take charge, not just the All-stars. Maybe they need to get Phil Jackson to have a talk with them or something. We have what it takes, it’s just not showing in the effort.

I personally think the idea of “waiting for Gil” is not helping the team. I believe this group of talented players can Win!!! They don’t have to wait; but the staff really needs to make some changes. These changes aren’t normal. IMO CB3 and Jamison need to set out together some. Andray and JaVAle need to see some minutes together. Nick needs more, too. Same with Dom. If James will pass the ball he’s fine by me. If he drives and gets fouled fine by me. If he’s going to go 1-6 with 2 assists; won’t help us. Darius keep hustling!! Rebounding is a must; stopping the 2nd chance points is a must; and I can just hear glen; not shooting “non rhythm jump shots”!! LOL I’ll check back a little later; glad that jeff will catch the game! any students blogging during class this game!! Phemy, haven’t seen you, you okay!! Any cell phone bloggers tonight!! Go Wiz!!

The Pistons are playing us without a center so either we:

A-go small and run them off the court (to match them) and change tempo

or

B-go big and pound them inside, we will see in the 2nd half

gbkdc-I would love to see option B myself, Coach Tap said he will be looking at the most effective line up, well you give me Blatche, McGee, Dixon, Young, DMAC, as a line up it will force the Pistons too match up or stay small where we have the advantage. I still am unclear of what offense we are running, but whatever it is we are not getting anything from post ups. Let’s come out and still this game.

NY is looking really sloppy tonight. tawn isn’t playing well because hes’ only playing with one hand. he needs to sit out the rest of the game, put in d-mac and the rest of the young guys.. we don’t need to risk injury to tawn.

Comment from M2

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time December 17, 2008 at 10:06 PM

M2 I am not happy with James, I am not happy from the assists, the ball is not moving, one on one offense will kill us, I am happy with him scoring. The 2nd unit needs to play extended minutes again they were the reason we beat the Pistons last game not the starters. Jamison is hurt this a perfect time to play McGee and Blatche together

Comment from jeffmalone1990

M2-we have not seen our true bench play, our bench would consist of not hacing Caron and Jamison on the court. My thing is let’s play the young guys to get back in the game, rest the 2 All Stars get the game close, and bring in the All Stars to seal the deal.

Comment from M2

Comment from Wizards4Life

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time December 17, 2008 at 10:13 PM

M2-I agree with you on 2 of your picks, sit Caron and James and give me Dixon (against his old team) and McGee to give the team an anchor in the paint. The earth will not explode if Jamison and Caron are on the bench, lol. James has proven with his assists totals that he is a gunner (scorer) he will not get us into our offense or sets, Juan is a better option because he can score and run the offense.

We don’t have a low post player people… We feed Jamison & he throws up some awkward stuff & we feed Blatche & he backs his man down a bit & then shoots a step back fade away. The Wizards do not play low post basketball & haven’t for a long time. Last year from time to time if Haywood showed that he had it going, we’d feed him but… But to say we have any sort of post up game (starters or bench) is crazy.
We run a princeton offense that relies on ball movement & back cuts.

We can’t yank a young guy out because he makes one mistake. We see the results (lack of confidence). Heck if we take them out, the vets lose their legs in the end. If we leave the learners in, we may get down, but we’ve gotta let the youth play, and let the chips fall where they may. We have to build them up. Let them stay on the court and get it right. We are losing anyway, so what is the point???

Jeff – no disrespect but good low post play usually means finishing at the rim & not shooting a fade away when you’ve posted your man up & received an entry pass.
We don’t really have anyone (save Butler depending on his match up) that “finishes at the rim”… It’s that simple.
Just because we’re taller doesn’t mean that our “taller players” have post up abilities. & I didn’t see us as taller tonight anyway. Sure with Stevenson vs Iverson we’re taller but Stevenson can’t do anything with the ball.
I’d love to watch a game with you Jeff.

Okay, I just don’t get it.

How can we consistently put the better rotation on the floor and always lose?

How can we always match up and still lose?

How can we get out rebounded when we have three 7′ players on the team?

Oh, wait a minute…I DO get it.

We never put the best rotation on the court.

We always manage to match up so that we have no advantage.

We never play more than one 7 footer player at a time.

THAT WAS A PATHETIC DISPLAY OF COACHING.

Comment from Agent0

It seems like a never-ending pattern. It’s not that we can’t play, and get blown out every game, because that is NOT the case at all. We are in almost every game, and ATTEMPT a comeback, but can never MAINTAIN control of the game. In a handful of games, we have come back from deep deficits, or even take the lead, but just can’t keep the game going.

THIS is where Gilbert is missed the MOST, but since he’s not in the picture right now, I am not going to go off topic.

What we need to do is ROTATE players that are not doing so well, [cough-cough STEVENSON cough-cough], and slow down and take high percentage shots. This is where our POST play comes in to play. Our big men need to be able to finish when it’s most needed, and if not, find ways to get easy baskets.

If we don’t do this, our outcome is obviously going to be what it is right now, that being UNACCEPTABLE.

I now believe that Coach T. has taken the easiest way out..he is going to place the responsibility for success or failure squarely on the shoulders of CB and AJ.

CB and AJ should be told that they DO NOT have to carry this team (while each is a good player, neither is capable of carrying a team). Currently, because they think that they have to, they are pressing because the coach expects them to get 20/10 every game. When there is only one of them in the game, he expects that he has to compensate for the other and create more scoring opportunities.

This is a TEAM game. It requires a TEAM oriented offense and a TEAM oriented defense. As a coach, you cannot simply say “You can not go wrong passing the ball to CB or AJ.”

That was a grandstand play by Coach T. to tell the media that that he spoke witrh NY and told him that he was not going to be constrained by the offense. Now he placed undue pressure on Slick Nick to free-lance every time he got the ball. Come on…how about establishing an offensive set that allowed Slick to succeed? For that matter, how about establishing an offensive set that allowed Andray to succeed?

PLEASE get a real NBA offense that is not small-man oriented. Is there NO ONE on that coaching staff that understands a post offense??? We are, on average, bigger than the vast maority of NBA teams. Isn’t it time to take advantage of that??

All we see on offense is more of the BS EJ Princeton offense. Let’s stick it in the trask can.

EG, you, and or, Coach T. is in WAY OVER YOUR HEAD. Either he does not know how to coach a NBA team, or you do not know how to select a coach that does.

The days are numbered for one, or both of you.

M2, surprising as it may seem to you, when Dmac comes in, he actually makes his minutes worthwhile. He brings great energy, outstanding defense, blocks, terrific rebounding, and even nice penetration to the basket. It’s people like him that we need playing more often..getting the little things done makes a HUGE difference.

I’d definitely rather put him in than DeShawn anyday.

Comment from jeffmalone1990

M2-I agree w\ that however I will tell you I like Dixon over James, but Dixon and Young play better with each other, I have over-blogged that we need to play McGee and Blatche!

I still believe that the trust that Tap has in our 2 all stars to play 40 minutes a night will come back to bite us. We really do not need to have one or the other on the floor at all times, I think it sends something negative to the bench players and too date it has not produced wins.

I think we are running back to AJ and CB3 as our saviours too much. We are running them into the ground. If/When Gil gets back, they are going to be in the need of a break themselves. Then Gil is going to be in the same position they are in now.

Play the youth and teach them how to play (and something other than Princeton)

Mike James is a gunner who can get buckets (M2) he brings us scoring, and that is good with the starting unit, my issue with him is ball movement, if he had that some aggression on passing as he does on shooting he would really stick on this team. Much like Juan (verson 1) when they go in you are the hero, 0-4 to start you are the goat. Ilike version 2.0 of Juan and he is playing well for us and his role, I am sure that it will benefit us later in the year when we are healthy.

We’ve fired our tenured coach & replaced him with a guy trying to do the very same things, have 3 guys that weren’t here last year (James, Dixon, J Crit) &
5 guys that didn’t see a lot of action last year for obvious reasons (Thomas, Blatche, Pech, Young, D Mac)…
That leaves D Song, Butler, Jamison & the worst two guard in the NBA.
I love everyones expectations but man, we just need some time.
I think it’s great that we want to exploit the lo post but our guys just aren’t ready or able to do that on anywhere near a consistent basis. Most of them don’t really have NBA lo post games to exploit yet.

Hope James gets more familiar with us & is less of a ball stopper soon…
But our biggest ball stopper is Butler. He’s pressing because he’s competitive (like Kobe 2.0 – the current Kobe is 3.0)
Love the Juan 1.0 & 2.0 analogies & they are correct. Shows he’s coachable & can adapt. Lets hope James can at some point as well.
We just need steady point production some way some how from the guard position. The worst two guard in the NBA isn’t getting it done & he won’t start to anytime soon. Nick is too young & sketchy (you can call it coaching but i’ll only attribute part of his inconsistency to that & the other part to youth & inexperience) right now. i can’t believe I’m trying to rely on James… Damn, what a season…

We competed for a long stretch of last night’s game, which is good. Not much more good to say, however.

We have lost the last 4 games by a total of 83 points. That’s horrendous. It’s time to say that we were a better team under Eddie Jordan. We lost 10 of 11, but we were actually *in* lots of those games down the stretch. No more. Oh, and we are 0-4 since the trade.

close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades. we’ve got a better record under tapscott and are therefore a better team.

i know that we dont have the privilege of watching practices, but i’d really like to see some of Crittendon. i believe he is the only point-guard we have on the roster. Every other guard is shoot first (some are shoot only). Juan might be trying, but he doesn’t have the instincts or the handle to be true point guard. His DNA is scoring.

Comment from M2
Time December 18, 2008 at 2:22 PM

Crit’s not ready…
& we were better under Jordan… Couldn’t close out then but we would have figured it out.
Early on we were up late in a lot of games. Back then we gave away leads, now we chase. We were up 14 vs Mil, 9 vs Houson, 8 vs ATL, 11 vs NJ, gave away 1 vs the Knicks, etc. Yeah, we were 1-10 but it was different. We missed Gil down the stretch of those games because with a guy like that, you put it in his hands the last few minutes & let him create / keep you in it. We would have eventually figured it out better than we since have under Tapscott. He’s “interim” & that’s useless.
We can still get it together relatively speaking.

Crit is deff. not ready to play. Even if he learns everything, I think that we should keep him on the bench. I’ve seen what he can do, and honestly, it isn’t all that great.
