Game Day Pacers
6:08 AM….Dave Johnson ready to attack the week on a Monday….and again my apologies for not being able to get on the BLOG once the game started Saturday …we kept trying to get back on and kept getting knocked off—-great night all around huh—but thanks for keeping the BLOG jumping—Wizards have had losses this season when they deserved to get something out of the game but needless to say Saturday was not one of them…. it was a choppy game and the Wizards did not contain the dribble asGlenn Consor noted in the broadcast….here’s to a new week and a new start…..BLOGCAST….radio and blogging together starts a 7…..we know the internet works at Verizon Center…..ESPN 980 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia….92.7 FM in Southern Maryland… and 1370 AM in Baltimore….
6:20 PM Dave Johnson checking in from Verizon Center…numbers to play with ….first and third quarters have been key.. when the Wizards win they hold opponents to 24 points in 1st quarters…when they lose they allow opponents an average of 29 points in 1st quarter….in third quarter of Wizards victories opponents have been held to average of 20 points…but in losses opponents have scored 28 ppg
6:30 PM..Starters are in..It will be Andray Blatche starting and Javale McGee will come off the bench…Juan Dixon, DeShawn Stevenson Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison….Pacers will go with TJ Ford, Marquis Daniels, Danny Granger, Troy Murphy, and Roy Hibbert will make his second start….

i am so tired of hearing antawn jamison talk about how upset he is with the young guys when he scores 17 points and plays zero defense in 40 minutes against the SIXERS.

Hello everyone, here’s yet another german Wizard’s fan writing to you from Stuttgart , wishing the Wizards the best of luck for tonight’s game against the
Pacers. I still have thet feeling that all the pieces will come together soon and we’ll be able to turn this season around! Go Wizards!!!

Maybe ET wont take mcgee out after 3 minutes and start him in the second half only to take him out again after 4 minutes…
but who am i kidding?
Comment from Agent0
Time December 15, 2008 at 5:55 PM
I must disagree. Although Jamison might not have put up the numbers we wanted to see against Philly, he still does all the other things we need done, and I can understand where his frustration is coming from. He DOES play defense, but he is out there mainly to provide offense, which we cant seem to find.
Anywho, I am looking forward to tonight’s game. I know that Pacers are a good team right now, regardless of their record. Kinda like us! Our Match-Up’s should work out perfect. One’s to watch in my opinion will be McGee and Hibbert. 2 Young guys that have been stand-out rookies.
Point Guard’s: T.J. Ford vs Juan Dixon. That should be a really good match up. Two very good, speedy guys that are very familiar to each other (Both in Toronto 06-08), who can both score very easily.
Shooting Guards: Marquis Daniels vs DeShawn Stevenson.
I think that both guards are struggling tremendously, and not much need be said. These 2 need to step up thier games if they plan on getting valuble minutes.
Small Forwards: Danny Granger vs Caron Butlerrrr
This will be extremely exciting to watch. I can see both putting up about 30 tonight. Each are doing superb this season and really providing the “lift” for their teams.
Power Forwards: Troy Murphy vs Antawn Jamisonnn
This will also be a good match up, but I have to give the edge to Jamison. The Pacer’s taller lineup will be a good test to all of our younger players.
And finally the Centers: Roy Hibbert vs JaVale McGeeeeee:
Two young guys getting good opportunities to get the starts, and valuable playing time. Although McGee will be the best choice to play, he may need some help, due to shortness in both height and bulkiness.
Overall, it should be a great match up. LET’S GO WIZARDDDSSS! Now is our time to shine!

Crittenton better play tonight. He didnt even play in the garbage minutes against Philly.
Come on Taps play him!!!
I bet EG is pissed that Taps is not playing him.
J Critt was so excited when he got here that he was going to get a chance to get minutes, and he is on the bench, and i dont care about knowing the plays, when you are 4-17, its apparent you cant win with players that do know the plays

If the Wiz are going to make the playoffs, they must win games such as tonight.
If they are going to make the playoffs, then they must get better at defense and rebounding. To do that they need to go for size. They need 20+ minutes a game for Javale, Andray and Dom. The Wiz over the last few years have not had a good defense, not becuase of poor rotations, but that they are undersized and teams can pass right over them and grab too many contested rebounds. This is frustrating because they have the players to remedy this situation but don’t use them.

Well I am looking for player rotations tonight and minutes, will it be the same or will it be a change? Nick has to play more than 4 minutes tonight, and maybe Mcgee can at least play 15??? Match up I look forward to is Murphy against Blatche, should be fun.
Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 15, 2008 at 7:29 PM
Crittenton is not playing right now because he doesn’t know the offense yet, he’s working very hard to learn it though and i expect his time to increase throughout the year,
its hard to pick up this offense in two practices.

Time December 15, 2008 at 7:31 PM
Tom, I REALLY hope you’re wrong about the reason for drafting Pecherov. I would lose a ton of respect for our management if I really believed they drafted him because they wouldn’t have to pay him for a year.
I know two things about Pecherov. One: When he gets the ball he’s looking to shoot from the perimeter. Two: Both Jordan and Tapscott have had him as #4 on the depth chart at PF. That’s enough for me not to expect anything from him.
A lot of teams draft tall guys, hoping they develop into their bodies. A few make it and the GM looks like a genius. Most don’t. It’s kind of a double or nothing thing.

On Javaris: “He’s come in and only had one or two practices and he knows less of what we do because he hasn’t played in the system. You see, MIke being in New Orleans, knows some of the stuff we run becaue they run our stuff. They run “forwards out”, they run “chin,” so I can put Mike in the game and we’re still organized and collected. We can run the basic stuff. He knows the basics sets, basic cuts, the basic timing. Javaris, at this point, doesn’t know any of that. And so, it’s going to take him awhile to learn some of that. It wouldn’t be fair to put him in the game and say we’re disorganized and point the finger at him. I’ve got to get him up to speed and get him in shape too because he hasn’t been playing. And then we can take a look at him.”
-Ed Tapscott
It’s not rocket science folks… The kid is not ready to be thrown into the fire.
As I stated in an earlier post. Doesn’t anyone remember Butler saying he needed a year to figure out our “system”?

since we just traded for james, he now cant be traded with a package of players for two months. After two months it will be right before the trade deadline. I bet James is moved with maybe Etan to a team that needs 2010 expiring contracts. Also Stevenson too.
Trust me its bound to happen. Or we dump stevenson and james takes over at 2 guard behind Young.

our best defensive and scoring line up, McGee, Blatche, DMAC, CB3 and Dixon (maybe DeShawn) if we want to get stops, we need to put the stoppers in the game! And let the unit play more than 5 minutes, please not another script like previous games.

this is just a disgrace. washington sports–with the exception of the capitals–are failing miserably. the redskins are choking, the wizards and nationals need a federal bailout. i’ve already switched favorite nfl teams from the redskins to the cowboys.. please hope i don’t switch from the wizards to another team.

Clearly, its personal with Tapscott and McGee. I have watched every game this season and JaVale is not close to being the same player he was two weeks ago. Tapscott is absolutely destroying this kids confidence. The reason we are not winning and will never win is because of this organization is an amateurish crew. This ain’t the league of old “washed up”, no defense playing, jump shooting veterans.
PS!! I hope no one in this organization ever talks about the two All Star fantasy again. Every team with two potential AllStars has more than 4 wins.
Ridiculous, Tapscott must go!!!!!

33 in the 1st for the Pacers and 29 in the 2nd, I mean we have seen this all year, we will not win until we can hold teams under 100 ppg, I dont care if we are shooting over 50 plus percent, means nothing is you give up well over 104 ppg, this is amazing to me that our defense is actually playing WORSE under Tap! Coach Ayers will not be back really for a few weeks, I have no idea what we are doing on that end of the court

Why would Tap have the phiphosy that Caron and Jamison must play at all times? One must be on the court, huh???They are leaders on the team, so the bench needs to have the leadership and coaching staff’s confidence in them allowing them to come out for at least 10 minutes a game (together) the teams with All Stars on them (Boston, Detroit etc) they make sure that the bench MUST bring it everynight and the starters will sit for long stretches, crazy!!!

dcbutler-if you remember I talked about having Jamison off the bench since Tap wants one of them on the floor at all times, and I got flack for it, will we keep losing with what we have and what we are doing. We need to put out effective line ups for sustained minutes to win, erratic minutes and spot play will have us losing more than winning

I hear ya Jeff. Our two all-stars playing together is not the answer. We are not 18-4, we are 4-18, so obviously it ain’t working. We need a fresh mindset on how this team should be ran.
Comment from jeffmalone1990

I will say it again the James trade hurt the Wizards, look at what it has done, scoring he had a good game last one out, but tonight 1 pt 6 assists, and the biggest reason it is killing the Wiz it is taken all of Youngs minutes, I cannot believe it at all, Blatche only 2 rebounds at the 5 not good, but 17 pts that was good
Comment from dcbutler357
Time December 15, 2008 at 10:46 PM
Also, I wouldn’t put it all on AJ and CB3, THEY are not provided the proper resources to HELP them get out of this rut. I agree with AB being a starter on the court, BUT DSteve should no longer be starting. Once they change that, lets see how a game goes, if it ever changes.

Comment from jeffmalone1990

dcbutler-I am not putting it on Twan or CB3, again they are doing all they can to help us win, my issue with them are the minutes (that’s all) I think when Tap said we need to have one of them on the floor at all times, that is killing our rotations (with the James trade)

Comment from dcbutler357
Time December 15, 2008 at 10:54 PM
I understand. I was just looking at it from both angles. The main issue is team mgmt. No matter who our players are mgmt should know their strengths and weaknesses and roll with it. NY should get more minutes, with what we have in MJ. We just need to run plays to exploit his strength. Another glaring problem was putting that small ball in the game again in the second half, after it being destroyed in the first half. That is a sign that our coach is kind of limited in his style of mgmt. I’m just ready for mgmt that will start out from scratch and get this thing turned around. If analysts can watch us and call everything out, what is the big “to do”. I understand hind-sight is 20/20, but now we can forecast the future….

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 15, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Actually, Andray had 19 points, and no it wasn’t particularly good. To get his 19, he needed 15 attempts and 7 shots from the line. Antawn took one more shot and got 7 more points out of his effort.
Andray also managed only 2 boards and 1 block. Not a good game from him. But, his effort was ok, and he doesn’t look like he has a conditioning problem any more.
Juan returned to more normal (well, even worse than normal) Juan numbers — 2-8 and 4 turnovers.
Darius continues to play well. McGuire played well too — he had 5 rebounds, a block and an assist in 15 minutes.

They fired the head and assistant trying to say they wanted to go in a new direction….but the replacement is no better and honestly no “moving forward” change.

I only saw the last 3 mins of the game but I got the picture.
The team needs JM (5), AB (4) AJ (3), CB (2) and JD (1) with Songailia, Dom, Nick and Crit coming in off the bench. The team needs size and length out there. That means JM and Dray out there together. Antawn and Butler are undersized for their positions and it is getting to be too much for them. Andray is a bit undersized for the 5 position. The enormous number of points this team gives up is ridiculous.
This is really a sad year for the franchise. But you gotta give us fans tons of credit for hanging with it!

No but he was definitely too winded to grab any rebounds..
The following is a post from the Wiz Insider blog because I couldn’t say it any better myself (talking to another blogger about Blatche’s “trade-ability”) :
Blatche is a thin, jumpshooting finesse combo forward with poor work habits and unsteady focus. He’s soft and shies away from contact and likes to pretend he’s a PG on the break. He’s a skill player whose skills aren’t good or polished or dependable enough to overcome his regular lapses in judgment or court sense. Basically, he’s still a project, which is why only a developing team would take him. Contending teams want guys who can be counted on the help in a concrete way. There’s nothing about Blatche that says he can do that on a good team. He needs to be on a bad team, because that’s the only way he’ll get enough PT to hone his skills. On a good team his blunders would be too costly.

i was glad to see blatche starting. he needs 30+ minutes per game the rest of the season to set us up for next year. although he did not do a good job on the boards, he was a threat on offense and blocked a shot or two.
now if only we can get some scoring out of the backcourt we can be competitive because it seems like defense is just hopeless so we will have to outscore opponents.
mike james seems pissed off that he was traded from a contender to come off the bench for the worst team in the east, and he looks selfish and clunky on offense.
i say play crittendon. sure he’ll screw up, but he is a quick, longish point guard and he is willing to focus on setting the other guys up. dixon turns the ball over at inopportune times and takes bad shots out of the flow of the offense. oh, and TJ ford simply abused him at the other end. i repeat: dixon was not wanted by any other team in the league and he is currently starting for us. put him on the bench and leave him there.
deshawn stevenson? i think it’s time to break his streak of consecutive games started. maybe that will light a fire under him.

I haven’t read anyone else’s blogs. I am a little too ticked off at tonight’s performance, so…
1. As much as I like to think that Juan can help us at certain times, he is a streak player. If he makes two mistakes (missed shot, turnover, etc.) in the first few minutes of the game, get him out of there at put him at the end of the bench…he is cooked. However, if he is successful on his first two possessions, ride him; he can contribute greatly.
2. I’m not sure how many points CB scored, but a close review of the tape, I’m sure, will prove that he gave up just as many. I don’t know if he is hurt or tired or simply doesn’t care (whch I doubt), but his defense is horrible. His defense consists solely of playing the passing lanes looking for a steal. That type of defense really puts the pressure on the big guys in the back who have to compensate for his poor play. I’d place his hustle rating at 2 of 10. He really looked like he was loafing at times.
3. Does coach T have any idea of the problems he would create for the opposition both on offense and defense if he played McGee and Blatche at the same time. I hope that Coach T realizes that Blatche can play the four spot. If he doesn’t, its time for a coaching change.
4. Apparently, Stephenson, himself, has realized that he is not an outside threat and he drives as often as possible. While that is in itself a good choice for him (his outside shot is in never-never land) , he is not a threat off the drive either. Sorry, I’m sure that he is an excellent teammate, but he too is cooked. Sit him next to ET (when he returns). That consecutive games starting record is a farce. If I were DS, I would ask not to start. It has got to be embarassing for him.
Does coach T really thing that Slick Nick would not be a better choice at shooting guard?
5. After trading for two point guards we still have no NBA point guard (of course we havent given Critt a chance yet. If he can’t play, why did we take him?) EG, who is doing our scouting? Do they communicate with the coaching staff?
6. Five AJ’s would be an NBA championship. Guts, hustle, desire, dedication…love the way he plays…although he does have a slight problem playing one-on-one defense against quick forwards.
7. Even thought CB got two assists on passes to AB off drives, it is obvious that he doesn’t want to pass the ball to non-vets unless he absolutely has to. On at least two occassions he took a pull-up jumper on a four on two break rather than pass the ball (CB was one of two in that situation)…I don’t consider that great teamplay.
8. CB and AJ are averaging 40+ points per game, but seem to be taking 60%-70% of the shots during key times of the game…during that key time when we usually we end up falling very far behind. Come on All-Stars, you have to produce more than total points.
9. This team is not a team. It is not entirely the fault of the players. The front office has made some horrendous decisions in attempting to rectify a bad situation. The choice of coaches is truly bad. While it was a good decision to eject EJ, to replace him with a clone was stupid. To be bull-headed enough to refuse to replace an interim non-NBA coach with an NBA coach is irresponsible. There are several (PJ excepted) NBA coaches available, let’s get one of them at least until the end of the year. Tell them they have a chance to turn the franchise around…produce or look for another job next year.

Just looked at some of the blogs…
Criticisms of Blatche:
In Blatche we have one of the most skilled, under-coached players in the league…a seven footer who can dribble, pass run, rebound and score. Come on folks, this is not a problem with Blatche; this is a problem with the little-man offense than we are using. Get Blatche the ball in a situation in which he can be expected to succeed, and he will succeed. He is caught in the EJ BS Princeton offense. Until we get a big-man oriented coach, our offense will still be geared for Gilbert…but Gilbert is not playing. Don’t blame Blatche, blame the management (coaching).
We are still trying to match up with inferior teams. Good grief, let then try to match up with us. Play Blatche and McGee together.

justgetanoffense-I spoke to Glenn about this on the post game show (Blatche and McGee) I to must agree that as much as we talk about the offensive stars we have, we have been lacking in defense for years! The one way a team with injuries can compete on a nightly basis in the NBA is to play D, for 48 minutes! So I think if you do not start Blatche and McGee at the very least you should lay them in 10-20 minute stretches together.Coach Tap really needs to trust the bench more, I understad you want to win with the vet’s, however we just need to put the best line up on the floor regardless of expreience! We also talked about playing zone and man to man D, and more pick n roll, none of the buckets we are getting are easy (unless we get the back door cut) Not having a convential point ,ay come back and hurt us without a clear objective on offense.

Jeff, I heard you on the radio! Good job! I only heard part of it because I had to get out of my car, though.
So, our answers to the problems seem to involve PLAYING BLATCHE AND MCGEE TOGETHER. Moving AJ to the 3 and CB to the 2.
And I want more DMAC, PERIOD. He is our best defender and rebounder. Give him minutes at the 2 or 3, it doesn’t matter.

I wonder why coach doesn’t play McGee more. I don’t see why Stevenson starts; he is not a defensive stopper. If M. Daniels or any person that you are suppose to guard scores more on you that the average than you are not a defensive stopper. God please let the Wizards start
PG: Dixon
SG: Butler
SF: Jamison
PF: Blacthe
C: McGee (he needs to get 20-22 min. a game)
Bench
James
Young
McGuire
Songalia
Thomas (I don’t know why coach isn’t playing him either)

I like that line up alot millie mill. I TOTALLY agree. Stevenson does NOT deserve the start, and should give up minutes to someone else, whoever it may be. He is out there for only 2 reasons, which are ASSISTING (thats what a guard does) and playing DEFENSE. He isn’t doing either. He also isnt providing nearly enough points we need to win.
I like Butler at guard, it seems to be in his favor. He plays the stlye of a guard, but has the ability to slash/drive/penetrate and FINISH getting to the rim, creating MANY 3 point plays the old-school way. I also think that Blatche at PW and McGee at Center makes a great combo. They can provide good height, leading to more rebounds and more blocked shots.
And for everyone who says McGuire should get wayyy more playing time, you are most certainly CORRECT. The guy is a beast at rebounding, and can block a whole lot of shots for someone his size. YES, he doesnt score, but then again, does Stevenson score? BAM. CASE CLOSED.

I am in agreement bench deshawn both he and dixon got dogged by both of the guards of the Pacers. Loyalty will only take you to our current record. Plus Caron is playing more like a 2 than a 3 so a starting line up of 1. James 2. Butler 3. Jamison 4. Blatche 5. McGee would give us experience in the backcourt and size in the front.

I like that line up..but I don’t know about James as a starter. We still haven’t seen what we want from him, except a whole bunch of missed shots. I think Dixon is slowly by slowly getting better each game, and should continue to start until we see some improvement from other players.
Here’s my version of the starting line-up:
1.Dixon 2.Butler 3. Jamison 4. Blatche 5. McGee
