Game Day Philadelphia

10:01 AM  Dave Johnson checking in….got to run to catch a train…but this is the place  for  the BLOGCASTradio and BLOGGING at the same time…you can hear on ESPN 980 AM in Washington….94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia  and 92.7  FM in Southern Maryland…1370 AM in Baltimore and  online there will be a LISTEN LIVE link

4:40 PM….Dave Johnson checking in from Philadelphia……again it is 7:30 start…need the extra time because the Flyers played the Penguins this afternoon here…change with the Sixers too… Maurice Cheeks, one of the most popular players in Philly history, is out as head coach and word is Assistant General Manager Tony DiLeo will be the replacement….it was last December that the Sixers changed general managers and it was the December before that they traded Iverson

4:50 PM…I know I am dreaming…but I keep thinking of the 2004/2005 Bulls–they started 0-9 and were 5-15 after 20 games and finished 47-35 and of course played the Wizards in the first round….the Wizards  have plenty of work to do….but I just like to be reminded that the season has hope….if they find a way to get on some kind of run…..

6:20PM ….Dave Johnson court side…interim coach Tony DiLeo said defense and igniting fast break will be his key with the Sixers…quick shots will be especially deadly if the Wizards fall into that trap tonight.. and they will try to press us….

7:05 PM….starters are in..Wizards  will go with Juan Dixon, DeShawn Stevenson ( Tapscott talks about Stevenson and his shooting slump on radio pre-game) Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison…Sixers will go with  Andre Miller, Willie Green, Samuel Dalembert, Andre Iguodala, and Elton Brand

Attention wizards fans anybody see super nanny last night on ABC because our newest Wizards player Mike James and his family were featured on last nights episode. It is sure amazing to see happens when a basketball player live happens off the court because he get yelled by the supernanny.

Comment from neal
Time December 13, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Yes, I saw it. It sure gave me a good idea of James’s personality. Reminded me of Arenas. Lots of drive, lots of talent, lots of ego. But he’s not as personable as Arenas. Gotta hand it to him for agreeing to be on the show. He must have known he would take some shots from Super Nanny, and he did. I’m not feeling very good now about getting James for Daniels, unless he has matured. Daniels is more of a team player, and we’re short on those.

James’s wife is sure better looking than Mike. She’s a fox. And she’s apparently smart too. Partners in a contruction business with one hand while trying to raise four kids with the other hand, and w/o much help from Mike with either.

We could all probably agree that our biggest problem is defense. Jordan, Ayers and Tapscott are all good coaches and all are married to this game. Any one could draw up a good defense on a chalk board. The challenge is getting guys to put 100% into it that haven’t been doing that for years, maybe ever.

Im going to be at a party so I will be unable to blog or even see the game. MAURICE CHEEKS HAS BEEN FIRED so we will see a new coach for the sixers tonight.

LETS GO WIZARDS!!!!!

Time December 13, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Neal, I’m not entirely sure this trade was about making our time noticeably better. It feels like a shake up. When things are going well you shake things up. Contrast is good for figuring things out.

As for me, I’ll keep watching and seeing how things go. Young players can be fun. If the Wiz are high on Javaris we’ll see what they give him in terms of playing time.

According to Steven A. Smith, it sounds like the Sixers really want Eddie Jordan at the end of the season. He basically guarantees that EJ will be on the sidelines for philly next season.

I definetly see Eddie getting a head coaching job next year. He is an excellent coach and will probably make the Sixers very good.

I agree. EJ is a really good coach and esp with the personnel in Philly, I can see him being very successful there.

I wish Coach Cheeks well, he is a great person and a good coach. From the rumors I guess Coach Jordan will stay on I95, lol. If he does land the Philly job, I wish him all the best, he is a players coach. Tony DiLeo said at his presser that he wants to play a fast break style of basketball, open up the floor a bit. Well I guess we will see it up close in a few hours.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 13, 2008 at 6:52 PM

I wish Eddie Jordan the very best. I was hoping he would land with a Western Conference team. If he goes to Philly he will have too many opportunities to play us every year. Eddie is a good coach and should be a good fit in Philly. I wonder who is on our short list for head coach next year? Maybe they are planning to keep Taps, but, he is more of a front office guy than a coach.

We traded Antonio for a journeyman and picked up another 2 guard that needs to be developed if he is to turn into an NBA player. I think GlingGling is right. It didn’t make us better so they must be trying to shake things up in hopes the “other” players will play with a little more desire. Even though it didn’t make a whole lot of sense lets see if it works.

I heard someone mention Taylor Griffin as a future pick, a while ago. He’s on ESPN2 right now. He’s a man among children right now…..the pros is a whole different level. I think he has a twin on the team also. Pretty cool.

Thanks for the inspiration (2004/2005 Bulls). That reminder could serve us well.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 13, 2008 at 7:57 PM

That Tony DeLeo is a smart guy. Let’s hope we match him as that is exactly what our game plan should be against the Sixers. With our 5′s being as fast as they are we should be defending, running, and pressing too.

I wonder what we have in mind to do with Brand? He is going to create a large match up problem for us. Anyone we put on him is going to be at a large “bulk” disadvantage.

Comment from BruceO
Time December 13, 2008 at 7:57 PM

dcbutler. It’s blake griffin thats the prospect. his twin is taylor who’s the worse player Here is his profile on draft express
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Blake-Griffin-1268/
He needs to improve his ability to jump shoot and his defensive effort and positioning. Monster rebounder though and I have to watch him in the post more. Psycho T is now playing for North carolina so that should be interesting to watch to see why he’s falling so low in draft yet is in the running for national player of the year and is about to pass North Carolina’s all time scoring list. He’s compared to a better version of songaila which i think is funny. But I think songaila’s good nowadays.
Next year I hope we get our starting SG. Either Harden, or Rudy Fernandez, or Nick steps up, or stephen curry, chase budinger or Vasquez of maryland. If we are going to get a defensive stopper it better be dominic, Battier or Jamario Moon. He brought vince to a screeching stop yesterday

on other stuff I came across this and had forgotten how good gil was (here’s his game against phoenix last year where he scored 54 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atvzq5mhoAo&feature=related

Hi to new bloggers, some of you guys may not know me. I’ve been around and I still read all posts here but I’m on realgm more nowadays

Grif,

That’s a good question. What is the wizard’s approach to tonight’s game?

There’s a short leash on the coaches this season, I wonder who else is on the “hot-seat”.

Comment from DJ-WizardsRadio
Time December 13, 2008 at 8:04 PM

hey wtop welcome… and thank for the phone call the other day..as for the approach tonight….ed tapsoctt emphasized dealing with the press that the sixers likely will bring….they will use a zone press so he does not want any diagonal passes…sixers want to run….so controling the tempo will be key….not that we don’t want transition buckets…but we do not want to go at the sixers pace…

Stevenson IS the problem… His man sags off of him on D (because he sucks & doesn’t have a respectable offensive game) thus clogging the middle & screwing up our movement & ability to get in the lane. He didn’t wait for Jamison to set his feet on an early high pick (result: foul on Jamison/turnover). He has thrown a couple of ridiculously bad passes leading to turnovers.
Etc.
Everyone STOP making excuses for him… He is BAD!

What is the strategy with McGee?

They put him in for like 4 minutes in the first quarter, and he does not go in for the rest of the half. Now he had 2 early fouls, but even with no fouls sometimes he is taken out and not put back in until the start of the 2nd half

The “no center” team is also a no defense/no rebounding” team. If you go small you have to be skilled enough to play that way. The Wiz small team is not skilled enough.

This is frustrating because the right substitution patterns would produce more wins. Need to go big. I don’t know how many games the Wiz have to sacrifice before that happens.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time December 13, 2008 at 10:02 PM

CF-I agree I do not understand why we see this in every game, the subsitutuion pattern is crazy, you need Blatche and McGee 20 plus minutes in every game, same with Nick Young, DMAC has earned 15-20 a night, what the???

Comment from jeffmalone1990

We got a couple of miracle years out of Stevenson since Larry left… Because he was able to fly around under the radar while surrounded by so much talent… The minute injuries kicked in (Butler & Gil two seasons ago down the stretch), he was exposed (play-offs vs Cleveland when Jamison averaged 35 & 12 & Stevenson shot like 20%)…
He SUCKS & his gas tank is empty. Everyone in the league knows what to do with him.

JM1990 – Nick & James have similar explosiveness… James is better then Nick RIGHT NOW so I’m not concerned with his contract (if you’re looking for immediate wins?)… Nick has a bigger body sure… But is not as NBA mature as James right now.
& DSS is “making shots” when it no longer matters (I believe they call it padding the stat sheet?). DSS needs to go hard at the basket from minute one & not when we’re down 20. He’s just a mess… Flat out mess!

At a certain point, we can’t even blame the players. This rotation is not part of the player development program. WHo is making the rotation decisions. We already know who’s in charge of the offense and defensive coordinations…

Of course… A backcourt mate that can get you 30 / 6 / & 5… I could run around out there a knock down a few threes with Gil as my floor leader. That’s my point… He’s the WORST starting two guard in the league hands down. A two guard is supposed to PRODUCE! A few injuries & he’s called on to produce… NOTHING EVER… He SUCKS!

Gil takes alot of D off other players on the floor not to say that CB3 is not a allstar of Jamison for that matter but to have that Shooting guy who demands double teams and over loads make the system 10x as easy for other players wait till Gil and McGee get on the court at the same time

dcbutler-we all are fans and love the Wizards, IMO the thing that hurts the most is to watch the team and them have no direction, the rotations are horrible and is Coach Ayers still running the defense? The Wizards from the top down need to be accountable, they have been a resilent bunch in past years however it means nothing this year, even with the roster we have today we are not a 4 win team!

Take Gil & Larry for instance… Larry went down, Gil got to shine & ended up an all star… The season before Gil was out 55 games & Larry was a stud.
When you’re a good guard, you pick up the slack & shine when your backcourt mate is out. Every guard in the NBA should be able to do so… In Golden State last season when Baron was out, Ellis shined… It’s not rocket science.
DSS is not capable. & this from a starting two guard in the NBA? I’m sorry.
On an offensively loaded team that’s healthy sure… Make him your “defensive stopper” & let him knock down a few open shots when the defense isn’t paying attention.
Right now… BENCH HIM!

YES… I LOVE THE WIZ!

We don’t have the talent at the guard spot though… Juan is the 4th guard on every other NBA team (hell, he wasn’t even that coming into the season because we were the only team offering him a job) & he’s STARTING for us alongside the worst starting two guard in the league.

This debacle falls squarely on the shoulders of Ernie Grunfeld. He is forced now to make a long term decision to go out and get a real basketball coach and develop an objective for this team. Tapscott is an articulate guy but what has he accomplished in this league. Clearly, he did not get it done in Charlotte. Ed Tapscott is way over his head and represents the definition of interim. His philosopphy pof veterans play irregardless of how well they play and are not accountable is ridiculous. There is no way you lose this badly to a mediocre Philadelphia team.

Because he lacks coaching experience the younger players on this team are playing worst since he has been here. He has absolutely killed the confidence of McGee who gets pulled whether he plays good, bad or ok. Nick Young barely played. Nick’s playing time has been taken by a guy who has been here for 15 minutes!!. These are your No 1 draft picks for the last two years.

DCBUTLER joked that Gil might want a trade as bad as the team is playing. Guess what, if he can find a team willing to pay a guy who has not played in two years 111 Million dollars, we should help him pack. 2010 will be packed with first class free agents.

Caron and McGee are the only players on our team that are not expendable. Antwain is a good player but lacks the all around game to carry a team. We should do for him what we did for Antonoio and give him a chance to play for a championship. There is a reason he was a sixth man at Dallas before he got here.

By the All Star break we should have Avery Johnson as our coach. Before then Ernie Grunfeld has to give Tapscott some direction on player personnel. But then again who says Grunfeld should be here. He put this squad together. He signed a 32 year old power forward, who can’t defend (Brand had one of his best games of the year) and a point guard who has not played on two years to one of the largest contracts in the league.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 13, 2008 at 11:43 PM

We are 4 and 17. It’s time to see more of Nick Young, Dominic McGuire, Pesh (if he is still on the team??), and Javaris.

Let’s develop some of our young talent. Let’s see who can play. The young guys have outplayed the starters ever since training camp. That should be an indicator of this team’s direction. For whatever reason the starters are not getting the job done. Let’s see if the young guys can do a better job.

I feel bad for the Wizards; they must feel totally beaten down and without any idea of how to turn things around.

Dominic played a terrific 12 minutes — why he doesn’t get 20 minutes instead of 12 a night I don’t know.

I also simply don’t get why Tap would *start* JaVale night after night, and then yank him after a few minutes night after night.

I have to say, I’ve rarely enjoyed watching a game less than tonight.

Think about it from the other direction — Antawn and Caron are proven, productive NBA players. Songaila, who is playing well, has never been more than a guy off the bench. DeShawn has lost his game (hope he finds it!).

Who else do we have who has proven himself to be a genuine, quality NBA player? No one, really. Mike James is one of those guys who bounces around from team to team. Etan is coming off a *serious* health crisis. The rest of the team is kids. Dominic looks the best among them; he is going to have a long nba career, it seems. Dray, Nick, JaVale, Critt — these are guys who still hve to develop, with Dray being the closest to ready. Oh well… :(

grifon — Juan had 3 good games in a row. Other than that, no, he is not putting up similar numbers to Roger. M2,
Jamison does have heart but he has aged and can not compete with the younger bigger players. As I recollect, Dallas made it to the finals after Jamison left and we have not made it out of the first round in two years. Lastly, the All Star team is also political. There are a number of players who make the All Star team every year but should not. Thats just the politics of the league. His contribution as a 6th man was nowhere as significant as Ginoblii’s whose team won several championships.

I agree Caron has heart also. But, the reality is we don’t know what the other players on this team can contribute because they have not been given a chance to play sustained significant minutes.

Just like the coaches want consistency out of the players, can we get a lil consistency from the coaches….LOL…..Sad thing is, the consistency of playing the wrong players is hurting the teams chances of winning a ball game. I know this won’t last for long. We are all saying the same thing each night. Doesn’t make for good blogging either. We can’t even talk about player development, because the players that need developing aren’t on the court long enough to see them develope. We are wasting Caron and AJ’s careers asking them to endure mediocre coaching.

The thing about last year was that there was the offense that was ran by AD, but this year it’s the green light for the vets and they don’t even get picks to get a little space for their jumpers, let alone run a play….its clear the side of the court and they are shooting jumpers….As mentioned earlier, it gets old typing or reading the same problems with the team, each night.

AB AND MJ should be starting, whether we like them or not. It may be better for JM to play with another big man to get on the floor coaching. Watching him is rough, he’s getting pushed around and he’s standing BEHIND the offensive player trying to rebound. His athletic abilities can’t overcome that. Ed talks a good game, but what is he implementing to ensure that what he is saying, can come into fruition. You dont’ have four players standing on the perimeter and say that you told your team to “drive” the ball. Po thang, he may be over his head. Juan is doing a heck of a job, but he also had a good amount of t/o. If we go totally young, it’s going to get rougher, but if we go young, we need a foundation to begin the process, no matter who we trade or who we draft. Continuosly relying on individual talent will not bring a trophy our way….but it will get an entry on the ALL STAR BALLOT.

Who’s next on the schedule btw?

Hi Guys,

Long time Wizards fan from Melbourne Australia here…..

As DC Butler has pointed out, I can’t seem to figure out ET’s rotation.

One game Nick Young and Javale will get 20 minutes each and then the following game the will get 5 minutes, it just seems out of whack. I know both are fairly young and continue to make silly mistakes, but I believe they are the foundations for the Wizards moving forward along with Blatche and McGuire.

If I was EG and we continue to play like this for the next 10-15 games, I really think we need to throw the kids to the wolves and see who are the one’s we can rely on going forward.

At the moment my starting five would be: Dixon, Young, Butler, Jamison and McGee.

I would give serious burn to Young, McGee, Blatche, Critteron and McGuire and limit Jamison & Butler to 30-35 minutes per game.

‘Sportwiz’ can you pls ask management why we picked up ‘Pech’s’ option for next year if he continues to rack up DNP’s every game. I think we need to give him 10-15 minutes a game to show Wizard fans why EG took his as his first round pick 2 years ago. If the coach continues not to play him, maybe we could trade him with another player (preferably Etan) for expiring contracts this year and/or future draft picks.

What does everyone else think???

Guys — time to give up thinking about the playoffs. We’ve lost 17 of our first 21 games.

The question is where is this franchise heading? We just got rid of a productive veteran point guard, because we wanted to acquire a 20-year old “potential” player. That’s a rebuilding move. Yet, in the off-season we gave an almost-max contract to Gil and signed Antawn to a long-term deal. Then we brought in a well-known shot-hoister who has trouble getting along?

I don’t understand what our GM has in mind. Somehow the guys running the Knicks have turned them from a joke to a reasonably good nba team in a matter of months. Do they just have more imagination and business ability than Ernie? I do have a sense of where they are going, for example, but I have no idea in our case. None.

A bright spot.

I wonder how many of us realize just how incredibly well Dominic McGuire is playing this season. He is rapidly becoming one of the best young wing guys in the league.

I know some of you think “how can that be, when he is only averaging a few points a game?” But, scoring is not all of basketball. And, what scoring Dominic does is *efficient.* (his only *bad* stat is FTA — he’s 1-6 from the line; that’s bad w/ a capital B)

Dominic is shooting nearly 50% — 14 of 30 (and one made bucket was a 3pointer, so his effective fga is based on 14.5 of 30.)

He averages almost 12 rebounds per 48 minutes! One key stat I like to look at is “net possessions.” That’s rebounds plus steals minus turnovers. An average small forward has 6.46 net possessions; an average 2 guard has 4.6 possessions. Dominic has 11.2 net possessions!

An average small forward gets .8 blocks per 48. A 2 guard gets .5. Dominic averages 2.9 blocks per 48 minutes!

Right now, outside of Caron and Antawn, Dominic McGuire is the best player on the Washington Wizards — by a lot!

What I noticed is that there seems to be no rhyme or reason out there. Everyone looks confused, and the team looks very disjointed right now. Maybe it’s from all the changes. Whatever it is, it was just ugly.

I knew Dominic was doing well. I didn’t realize he was doing THAT well. You would have to assume the Wizards have their stat people to tell management the same thing Tom tells us. Why then isn’t Dominic getting more playing time?

Tom I hope my gut feeling is wrong. Bringing in James, the shooter, and Crittenton, the Nick clone (possibly), doesn’t speak well to me. Is it possible Gil’s recovery/rehab isn’t going well? Why else would we give up Antonio basically for a journeyman if we werent looking to replace “points”. We give up on Dee’s potential and get an unproven guy who is supposed to have this huge scoring upside…. maybe. I’m getting a very bad feeling about this.

I see that Princeton offense influence creeping back into the Wiz game (probably never left)… dribble hand-off and cut (but don’t look for the ball unless you are AJ or Darius); pass to whoever is on the wing and cut (but don’t look for the ball unless you are AJ or Darius); dribble to the corner and try to dribble back out (unless, of course, you get double-teamed, in which case you throw a pass toward anyone in a Wizards jersey and hope); finally, get the ball to a big man at the top of the key where he has about a 10% chance of scoring and get out of his way…or let Caron or NY try to create something on their own while we all just watch.

Why, if, by some fluke, we do get the ball to McGee or Blatche in the low post, do we, by all means, move closer to him so that our man can be in position to double-team him and still get back to us if we get a return pass. How about a pass to the post and an exchange of position between the passer and the player closest to him? It just might free one of them up for a return pass and open shot.

When are we going to screen off the ball to allow someone to get free for a shot? When are we going to set some serious picks for a pick an roll (only Darius does it right)? When are we going to get the ball to the post and cut off it? When might we have more than one player at a time actually moving?

Why do we always try to avoid contact on a drive? Gil did it best. He created contact with the opponent on his side (not in front of him) and went to the line frequently.

Why do our opponents get SO MANY open shots and the Wiz have to struggle to get a shot with someone’s hand in our face? Are the opponents better athletes? I don’t think so. Does the opposition have a real offense that gets open shots for players in a position where they can suceed??? yep! Does the Wiz??? Nope.

Why do we have a front-office admin guy coaching a professional basketball team? Why don’t we get a real fresh voice to run the team, not an EJ clone? In all fairness to coach T, he didn’t have to think Xs and Os for years and then overnight we expect him to become a coach again!

The Wiz is a very bad team that has a nucleus of very good players. Why can’t we get better rotations? When are we going to see McGee and Blatche get extended minutes on the court at the same time?

WHY? Why? Why? do I sound like getabigboyoffense? Because I had a computer problem that destroyed the file where I stored my Wiz blog password, and I just created a new account hoping for a password that could be remembered…HAHAHA fat chance, but it’s me.

Last why for today. Why can’t we create our own password for this blog?

He should stay down in the blocks keeping balls alive & reeking havoc a la Anderson Varejao in Cleveland. McGuire will never be a Ron Artest (a guy who can practically do it all) or a Caron Butler. Wake up from that dream.

As far as Antonio, can you honestly say that he didn’t play a role in keeping the ship afloat, when Gil was hurt last year (regardless of his stats last year)?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 14, 2008 at 7:22 PM

I wonder whether the Wizards *do* have someone analyzing statistics, Grifon. I’m sure they track stats, but not every assessment of their meaning is related to results w/ the same accuracy.

I continue to recommend that any sports fan (and *certainly* any sports executive involved w/ managing talent) read The Wages of Wins and follow author Dave Berri’s blog (where you’ll find a link to more about the book itself).

Dave and his cohort are economists, and they use sophisticated stat software to analyze player performance as it contributes to team wins. That stat is called WP48, and is created using statistical software that’s beyond my ken. Dave has posted another measure — the one I *do* use — which correlates closely w/ WP48. It’s called Win Score, and you can calculate it easily. I’ve posted it here in the past and will again if you like.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 14, 2008 at 7:35 PM

NBA plus/minus stats are basically useless. They don’t weight stuff right and they don’t correlate with contribution to wins. The point of Dave’s work is that it correlates *very closely* w/ how teams actually do in wins and losses over a season. NBA stats, Hollinger’s PER stats — none of that stuff actually tells you is really performing well.

To get Dom’s Win Score so far this year, you add all his points, rebounds and steals plus 1/2 his assists and 1/2 his blocks. From that total, you subtract his FGAs and turnovers and 1/2 his FTAs and fouls. Divide the result by the total of his minutes, then multiply it by 48 so we have a “per 48 minutes” measure for any player.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 14, 2008 at 7:53 PM

Obviously, the more minutes you have to work with, the more useful the result is. Pecherov has played a total of 36 minutes this year. His numbers are pushed up by one good stat — he has 12 rebounds. I.e. a rebound every 3 minutes, which is great.

But for his career he rebounds at about half that rate.

M2 — wing is what McGuire plays. You might want to play him somewhere else, but you aren’t the coach. McGuire doesn’t take many shots, but he is shooting almost 50%.

Above all, the idea that he should “stay down in the blocks” is pretty funny. He is producing like blazes at what he’s doing, but you’d like him to do something different?

As to AD “was not productive” — do you mean when he was injured and not playing? Or when we went 37-26 w/ him starting last year and his numbers were in the top about 15 point guards in the league?

I don’t think he is intended to be – nor wants to be – the coach beyond this year, but I don’t think our problems can be laid at his door either. Except for a very few great ones (and a few terrible ones!) coaches don’t make much difference.

I’ve given up on any hope for real success this year. I’d like to see the kids play. I think that might be what most of us feel — though I don’t want to speak for others. But, for example, M2 and I aren’t agreeing about much except that we want more PT for the young’uns.

Tom I love you because you love the Wiz…
& Daniels DID hold it together last year while Caron & Jamison had CAREER years & DSS only fell of slightly but was able to because of those career years (this season DSS is completely off)…
The rubber on Daniels tires is GONE as it relates to what the Wiz are trying to do (because I’m sure he’ll do great “statistically” in N Orleans playing 10 minutes a night running pick & rolls, which is what we originally brought him to DC to do. Play 10 minutes a night that is).
The rubber on DSS’s tires is gone as well but he’s somehow able to ride on threads when surrounded by the right guys? Probably because he’s tough & stays healthy & available…
McGuire can play any position he wants but that doesn’t make him proficient at that position. Your gonna tell me subbing D Mac for Butler makes good sense?
D Mac is doing everything he can considering the circumstances & doing it well but he is NOT an NBA wing!
He has played in 18 games & taken a total of 30 shots (making 14) & 10 of those makes are directly under the basket stick backs due to his 19 total offensive rebounds. If you wanna blah blah blah your 50% shooting based on that, have at it, but I’m busy watching the games. The kid has promise but c’mon?
Speaking of kids, yes, I’d like to see the them play but this is the NBA & kids need to be brought along the right way no matter the circumstances. If not, confidence could be affected long term. They’re athletes yes, but at a certain level most of the game is between the ears when you really get right down to it.
Ex: I’m so tired of hearing J Crit had 4 turnovers in 6 minutes on his 1st night in uniform. He got zero shoot around, borrowed a pair of Gils shoes & was being told by D Mac where to be in offensive sets. He SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN IN THE GAME!
Part of your love for the Wiz makes your vision a little blurry even with statistical support. Take thinking Dee Brown is an NBA player for instance…

Tom M. I can’t believe that you would write “Except for a very few great ones (and a few terrible ones!) coaches don’t make much difference”. I challenge any statistical analysis that leads to that conclusion. Have you not played the game on an organized level? Have you never coached?

A coach at any level, Biddy to the NBA makes a tremendous difference in how the game is played. Great players can sometimes be successful despite poor coaching, and good coaching can make mediocre players into good teams; but the coach always has a tremendous impact on the game and the team.

The coach decides who will play and when, and which players will be on the floor at any given time. The coach decides the rotation and the positions the players play in any rotation. The coach calls the defense and the offensive plays. If the players don’t comply, the coach can remove them…no negotiation…no votes…do it the coach’s way or sit down.

What you wrote is the same as saying that an orchestra would play the same regardless of the conductor; a government would function the same regardless of its leader; a company would succeed or fail regardless of its president.

I read every one of your posts. I think that you are very analytical and usually rational, but you are speaking about numbers, not basketball players. You continue to disregard the human element, the chemistry, the trust that is invloved in team sport and concentrate on the numbers that are the result of the play, not the cause of the play.

Statistical analysis is great to use to see what is the probability of something happening based upon the number of times that it happened before, but it still does not replace trust, desire, heart, determination, pride…human elements at game time. That’s why we play the game.

Coach’s decisions are at the root of most of the blogs. Why didn’t Juan get more time?; why doesn’t Pech get any time?; why does McGee get only 12 minutes per game?; why not get AB and McGee more court time together?. If not the coach, who do you think makes these decisions?

The coach can only compensate a little for a poor team, but a coach can certainly make some decisions that can cripple a good team. We are crippled. We have no offense; we have terrible rotations; we remove players who are contributing; we have no continuity; we place too much pressure on CB and AJ…coach T is quoted as telling Dee Brown”you can’t go wrong by passing the ball to CB or AJ” (see how far that got DB). Coach Jordan was a small-ball coach and coach T is following in the only footsteps he has known in a long while.

My suggestions:

Somehow (I don’t know how it is possible) get rid of ET and DS (if not possible, just don’t play either); let CB and AJ understand that they don’t have to carry this team, and they should do what made them All-stars and let the game come to them; get some consistent minutes for Slick Nick and DM; play McGee and Blatche together for extended minutes; MOST OF ALL, develop a professional basketball offensive scheme that put players in a position to succeed.

Comment from neal

Yes, Tom, I’m talking about Tapscott, as well as Jordan. And I disagree. I think coaching can make a big difference. For instance, I think we have enough talent on this team to compete. Our guys aren’t playing up to their potential, and it’s not about the x’s and o’s.

I like McGuire a lot but who are you going to sit down in order to play him other than Butler? The only other possibility is to have him spell Jamison also and take minutes away from Blatche and Songaila.

M2, I just read your reply to Tom M…I too like McGuire’s heart, etc. and I like it when he is in the game because I know that he will give it 100% every minute, but I agree that he has yet to show that he is a good NBA player. It is, once again, a case of using statistics to reach a faulty conclusion. Until McGuire develops a better mid-range shot, he has to concentrate on hustle, desire and strength to stay in the NBA, never mind be considered in the top group at any position.

I find it hard to evaluate a players talent in street clothes. I may agree with you but I want to see the guy play first. Crittenton plays the first day he gets here with people telling him where to be on the court and Pesh sits in street clothes. I just don’t understand that. Crittenton will get his chance, but, Pesh already knows the offense and defense not to mention he is a 7 footer with a little beef in a time we are crying for inside help.

The Red Sox hired a “stats” guy named Bill James. Mr. James had a “little different” view of how stats should be read and interpreted. Because of his insight the Red Sox broke the curse and won the World Series. If the Wizards management reads this blog, there is a certain person here that can possibly help the Wizards the way Bill James helped the Red Sox. Sportzwiz, FantasticWiz, Dave, anybody Tom should be considered for the position. If there is no position create one like the Red Sox had the insight to do. The possibilities are limitless.

Thanks for stopping by troll…
But we’ve got the 2nd longest consecutive playoff appearance streak in the east behind Detroit right now.
Why am I bothering?

Anyway Grifton, I know Pech sucks because among a few reasons I wont mention here, I’ve been to practices in Richmond, summer league games in Vegas, & don’t need to see too much more actual regular season game burn to figure it out. Our coaches have also figured it out.
He’s not ready & I’m not sure he ever will be?
We can ask for more Nick burn & complain about some rotations but Pech?
Lets stick to a workable script!

wow i have not seen doom around here like this ever but this was not around when the wizards were the bullets so that might be why.. come on guys we are not doing good this year its not the end of every thing i have seen this team lose with alot more talent than this no joke and i have seen them win when no one said they could but its times when your down and it dont seem that you can get back up that might make you a better team in the long run stick with it we got to make this happen or watch it fly by and wait till the next year rolls aroun

Read this article for research on coaches in the NBA (please note that it is *in the NBA* I’m discussing — not in Biddy). We all hold many truths dear that are not true.

neal — yes, Dominic would be my primary backup for Butler and for the 2 position as well. Players who perform better produce better overall team results. Finding minutes for him at the 2 should be no problem, as our team has *no guards!* :)

Mike James needs to play 10 minutes a game — at most. That leaves 86 guard minutes. We should be able to get a look at Crittenton and see lots of Dominic. Especially given that DeShawn should never get more than 25 minutes.

getanoffense/bigboy — I agree w/ your rotation suggestions.

M2 — right back at you! :) One of the facts about blogs like this is that to make things interesting (and vent frustration!), we all write in the most extreme versions of everything we think. What we have here that makes it ok is *a lot* of good humor!

Pecherov is a great kid and a hard worker. He is a bust to this point as an NBA player. He was also a *terrible* draft choice. We took him, because we wanted someone we could stash for a year — not put on the roster and not pay for right away.

Rajon Rondo and Josh Boone were both available when we picked Pech; i.e. a good point guard and a rotation big. Of course, hindsight is always 20 20, but I don’t think we picked the guy because he was the best player.

The only time I’ve seen him play was when he was hurt with the ankle last season. I’d at least like to see him play a little before I make a decision.

You can’t expect J Crit to get any burn anytime soon. It’s not realistic. Remember Butler last year explaining that it took him a season to fully understand our offense?

On Javaris: “He’s come in and only had one or two practices and he knows less of what we do because he hasn’t played in the system. You see, Mike being in New Orleans, knows some of the stuff we run becaue they run our stuff. They run “forwards out”, they run “chin,” so I can put Mike in the game and we’re still organized and collected. We can run the basic stuff. He knows the basics sets, basic cuts, the basic timing. Javaris, at this point, doesn’t know any of that. And so, it’s going to take him awhile to learn some of that. It wouldn’t be fair to put him in the game and say we’re disorganized and point the finger at him. I’ve got to get him up to speed and get him in shape too because he hasn’t been playing. And then we can take a look at him.”
