Game Day Celtics

7:18 AM…Dave Johnson ready for a BLOGFEST on the BLOGCAST tonight….We will keep you posted on Mike James and Javaris Crittenton and their availability for tonight. Before they can play with the Wizards, Antonio Daniels will have to pass his physical with the Hornets…We ceretainly wish Antonio well…he is a true professional  and was always terrific with us on the radio and of course was 37-26 as a starter last year….with teams doubling up on Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler..James and Crittenton will have opportunities to make shots with the Wizards……And let’s hope the positive play continues tonight minus a big deficit to come back from…..It is clear Darius Songailia is a huge boost off the bench in so many ways …he makes good cuts and opens up the floor and the offense runs well when he is on the court and on defense he takes assignments against guys that are bigger and more athletic but finds a way to get it done…Songailia certainly did that against Rasheed Wallace and recently Dwight Howard…Also Domenic McGuire is in attack mode on both ends of the floor and is going to keep earning minutes that way…as always good movement will be key…on the radio broadcast with the help of STATS SUPREMO Scott Benson we tracked the number of passes made on each possession and  four or five passes usually led to a bucket anything less more often than not was trouble…and that is not a surprise but it was interresting  to track…BLOGCAST tonight starts at 8…great rainy day and night for blogging…for the newcomers….the BLOGCAST is radio and blogging at the same time…you are connected with us court side…..on radio ESPN 980 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia…92.7 FM in Southern Maryland….1370 AM in Baltimore…and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link for online listening……check back later

7:47 PM…Dave and Glenn checking in court side….defense will be key in 16 of 19 games  Wizards have allowed opponents to shoot 50%…starters are in…Celtics will have Rondo, Ray Allen, Kendrick Perkins, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett…Wizards have Juan Dixon, DeShawn Stevenson, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, JaVale McGee

speaking of dwight howard at the top, Javaris Crittenton played alongside him his sophmore year at Southwest Atlanta Christian School and won a state championship. Not only that our boy Javaris broke the record for career points at Southwest Atlanta Christian School which was previously held by Dwight. Not saying this kid will be like Dwight Howard. It was just interesting knowing he played alongside him, and played well.

my buddy here at work just showed me on the washington post today that the wizards were going to trade etan thomas and daniels to the bulls for larry hughes. and when larry hurt his shoulder the wizards backed out. NO!!!!!!!!!! i want larry back. and i remember larry saying he wanted to come back!

the trade for larry was gonna happen in october

No way I want to give up anyone useful for Hughes. He’s too expensive and he’s injury prone.

EG may have pulled off another coup. Crittenton is just potential at this point. Another kid who came to the league too early. What’re the odds that a kid with big potential lives up to his potential? 1 in 4? That’s good enough for me. We keep giving up known ability that isn’t going to be around for long for potential, eventually we’re going to hit it big again (like we did with Butler).

James seems to play well, but has not endeared himself to coaches. Maybe he’s matured. And maybe Tapscott is the guy that even James will like. Maybe we got an immediate contributor for cheap.

Here’s hoping Crittenton and James can play tonight — grab a flight, Antonio!! :)

(I’m sure he will — he must be excited to play w/ a contender)

hey neal,

larry didnt fit with lebron and hes doing ok with the bulls. but for me i have been waiting for him to be a wizard again. and we all know he plays very well alongside gil and twan. it just excites me bringing back memories from back in the day when gil and hughes were among the the best backcourt in the nba if not the best. not sayin they will be if hughes come back. but i would take

gil
larry
caron
antawn
javale

lineup anyday. hearing about this it looked like antonio has been shopped around by Ernie a long time ago. and Etan hasn’t been playin as much, so really we wouldnt lose anyone useful.

Weren’t we the only team to beat the Celtics twice last year?

aznzero we didn’t just beat em twice. We beat em 3 times :) .

DeShawn talked a little about that yesterday, basically he said that when these two teams play there is a lot of talking on the court, he said he couldnt exactly say what gets said.

As for James and Crittenton, I will head down to shootaround and see if Ican find anything out, should know more by maybe noonish.

sportswiz — I assume that whether they can suit up or not, the new guys are in the building. Get us some video, dude — an interview w/ Javaris. You can do it! I know they need to learn some sets for tonight, but that’s all right, just interrupt them! :)

Sportwiz,

Thanks. i can always look to you for some facts. And thats even better. Yay we beat them three times! Knowing KG and his trash talking he probly is the reason these two teams do a lot of talking.

Comment from SportzWiz

No problem Tom :) , Tap will understand. If they are available we will get some info on them. Otherwise hopefully tonight.

DeShawn was very funny yesterday he said half the time you don’t know if KG is talking to himself or to you.

Tom you bring up a good point, Mike James actually should have a pretty good grasp of the offense. New Orleans runs a similar style.

I actually talked with Linton Johnson in the preseason about it. He said that coming from New Orleans (were he had played last year) the offenses were pretty similiar and it wasn’t as hard to pick up.

Thanks for sharing all that about AD Bridge. Yeah I believe you do know it’s hard to blog when the wind got taken from our sails!! I haven’t read a lot about CP3 but he seems to be struggling now; maybe too many minutes; so hopefully AD will fit in there!! If I understand the “deal” correctly he needed to be involved with an actual trade so all three teams could obtain what they wanted; hence that’s why he didn’t get asked to stay on in the organization. Dee, too, I really do understand about the need to open up the roster spot. Hopefully this helps everybody. It still hurts but you too I hope you can find a way to stay blogging in the positive way even though “your guy” isn’t playing with the Wiz. You seem to like Dom and Blatche don’t ya. Maybe your heart will open to them or another player?

Comment from Tom Mandel

Antonio is a fantastic person, no doubt. He will be a *great* coach, certainly, and I am sure he’ll be a big success at anything he turns to. I would not be surprised to see him one day as the owner of an NBA franchise — or of some other large enterprise.

As to Dee, I would be *so happy* to hear news that he caught on with another team. He can definitely play in the league.

We’ll miss both those guys, but now we need to concentrate on learning more about our new Wizards — that’s why I’m asking SportsWiz to, you know, be aggressive. Stick the mike in their faces, man, *while* they are working! :)

Gonna be a tough one tonight guys…..I’m not going to lie, I’m hoping for a moral victory — team playing with hustle, and together.

Sure, a close loss may be more disappointing than a Boston blowout—with AJ and Butler coming out the locker room with the “same ol’ stuff” line again—but the Celts are 20-2 and are playing much more cohesive than the Lakers and Pistons squads we saw.

I’m not holding a win as a complete improbability, but rather, I like the idea of it being more of a pleasant surprise.

Tom it’s not that I’m slow; but I need just a little more time to catch up on some comments. Really, I am moving on just not at a pace some others are able to.

SportzWiz: How could I not keep cheering on Dee!! If you can keep posting some links about Dee for a few days in the top part I’d sure appreciate knowing where he’s going. I just bet a few of you guys sorta liked, him, too, and could see he did his job!! He wasn’t hired for size or scoring; he was hired to push the ball and boy howdy did he excel at that!!

Tom there is no stat for HEART and Dee and AD have plenty of that!! Wow did you say “he can definitely play in the league”. I thought you believed him to be a marginal player; not worthy of being in the league! :)

Comment from slwiz
Time December 11, 2008 at 11:31 AM

I honestly don’t know HOW SportzWiz. Sorta a new territory for me to keep supporting an organization that let go of a favorite player. I keep talking about CB3 and Antawn being ALL STARS and yet needing to keep growing and maturing; maybe I do, too. I have tonight open to cheer on the Wiz there’s no reason not to. I may need some help, though. Maybe Bridge can use John50 was it; and maybe gbkdc will be on the phone again! :) But I am excited as to how Darius keeps getting found in that low post; how Andray keeps himself focused and stays with concentration. Jamison’s rebounding skills are amazing!! Dom working on his defensive skills and becoming a specialist even though he can score and pass well. And of course Nick and Juan and Stevenson how will they do as shooters! And CB3 and Tawn how we they keep leading this crew? And of course how will JaVale be used? So many of the guys are developing and how could I miss out on that? And there’s always the “voice of the Wizards”!! LOL

Boston is on fire!! How will they match up? My heart only wants good things for these players and just so you know in the early 70’s I was a Bird fan. I loved sitting with my dad and cheering him and Parish and McHale on to victory; but this Boston team I don’t know but you’ve (the whole blog cast scenario) helped me to know this years Wiz. So Go Wiz. Beat Boston. Something I thought I’d never say!! The Beat Boston part; I’ve always said Go Wiz! LOL

Truth you said it well; maybe a close loss is something to look for!! Certainly our guys can keep from getting blown out!! They have been showing so much effort and improvement. In a way I hope the new guys get in but not at the expense of our present chemistry!! Wow 20-2 our guys must step up!! Hey do you suppose the dj for the Verizon crowd knows more upbeat music gets the crowd going!! Maybe a mike needs to go into their face as well for dj music devlopment!!

I think what happens as fans, and this is just me personally. You grow up and you start liking a team because they are from your town or your city or your parents like that team.

Then you start to grow attached to certain players on that team, and I think we all take it hard when those players leave. But in the process you start liking other playeres like you with Darius or Antawn or Dom or DeShawn. And then you start cheering the team as a whole so if a player or two leave you adjust to it.

I truly believe everything will work out with Dee. Obivously AD is in a great situatino and will work out as well. My guess is Dee will go home and meet with his agent and start looking at the possibilities out there.

As for Tom when he says someone is marginal thats not a dig at them. I learned this last year more and more. A marginal player means that he’s in the 50% tile in the NBA. if he says someone is below marginal that doesnt mean they are bad it just means that for the NBA they aren’t in the top half players in the league. If you make it to the league you are a phenomenal player, but its kind of how do you compare with the phenomenal players that are at this level.

So I think Tom (i knwo im speaking for him on this) thinks Dee is a phenomenal player. Just in regards to the NBA he is marginal..

Make sense?

SportsWiz and slwiz — I think Dee has everything required to be a solid, role-playing, off the bench point guard in the NBA — a productive player, in other words. I don’t remember ever describing Dee as marginal, but if I did it would have to have been early in the Summer, before he had a chance to show himself.

He has speed, he is hard-nosed and likes to defend. One big thing he has going for him is his nose to rebound the ball. For a (maybe) 6-footer, he grabs a lot of boards somehow.

The big question about Dee was his shooting, and that definitely came around during his stint w/ the Wizards, especially the 3-pointer. If he develops a dependable 3 point shot, he can have a long career in the Association.

Now, as to the term “marginal player” — SportsWiz, you are right that even the least of the players in the NBA is a phenomenal basketball player. They just don’t let in the guys who can’t play the game! But, by “marginal player” I don’t mean “average player.” I mean a guy who you don’t know if he’ll make it in the league. Pech would be a good example of a marginal player. Darius is a good example of an “average” power forward, though he is playing a little better than that recently.

i said it yesterday, i’m excited for the trade. EG has known been to a great poker player in terms of making the right roster moves. i’m still a little iffy on his firing of eddie jordan because it was just last year EJ was at least being mentioned for coach of the year honors, plus the fact that injuries to his 2 key guys were out of his control.

anyway, again wishing nothing but the best for AD, and my fingers are crossed that he won’t come back and burn the hell out of us when we play the hornets later in the year. mike james is another veteran who i think will see playing time tonight (if everyone clears) and just about every game. javaris, hopefully he learns the nuances of tapscott’s offense, but for the first few games i see pecherov finally getting his shot (and me finally being able to say “I GET BUCKETS SON!”… “I CAN’T FEEL MY FACE” is one thing but i rarely even got to say “I GET BUCKETS SON!” last year.. looking forward to pech’s opportunity.

not sure if i’ll be blogging tonight, might be hanging out with friends. my project is all done for those of you who saw my 5 or so total posts for detroit, and i have 1 exam left before i can enter full blogging mode monday night, but at least 2 days to chillax before then. hopefully i’ll be able to chat with some of you all on here in the coming days if im not beaten to death w/exams.

Well I will say it again, the Wizards rank in the top 5 in bench scoring, this move can only help more. Just cannot wait to we are healthy so we can settle in on rotations and players roles and minutes. I think this our best bench in years, and would love to have all of our horses for a push at the playoffs.

i find the celtics really easy to dislike – paul pierce and kendrik perkins really bother me too.

plus i don’t like the idea of trading for a bunch of stars and winning right away, i would rather watch a team that tries to build through acquiring young talent, much like the wizards are apparently trying to do. i don’t know anything about crittenton tho, i’m looking forward to seeing him play, hopefully he can perform well and get some decent minutes soon.

PHX is in need of a 13th… & that 13th needs to be a PG that can get up & down… Maybe they’ll grab Dee & make you all happy?

Everyone: think of Crit as a Nick Young (only a couple years younger in age & with a little less NBA exp) or a Jared Baylis (a top ten pick stuck on Portlands bench because they are so deep) or even a Larry Hughes… He’s a combo guard like those three with similar size etc.
NOT a combo guard like Steph Curry (6′1″ / 180) is “supposedly” gonna be.

Crit just needs some minutes… Like every good young prospect, he tears the summer leagues up playing against NBA guys his age & exp level… & has a pretty good hoops resume at every level thus far. His upside could be ridiculous…
I have friends in LA’s front office that have been trying / wanting to get him back since the Pau trade.

millie mill-I agree we need some toughness, Mike James is talented and given time he can put up numbers, however make no mistake there is a reason why he has seen a few teams in the NBA, my hopes for him is simple team and attitude, ball skills he has that hands down.

millie mill-I know when I played ball, I cared about being a starter, then as I got older I cared about being on the floor at winning time, so hopefully no matter who starts it comes down to who get’s the meaningful minutes (i.e. McGee) Should be a great game tonight, so let me be the first to say I expect the Wizards to win tonight, and get that “swag” back.

i would have dixon over young any day of the week. NY and d-song are your 2 big sparks off the bench. you don’t want to change that.

hopefully the noobs can play tonight though. we need all the help we can get. if anything i’d have james active and crit inactive, that way pech can finally get some playing.

When it rains it pours!! I’ve lost my computer for a few days. No internet connection. Some kind of configuration problem says Comcast as right now I’m using my roomie’s laptop which is networked to my PC in our apartment. Later tonight I’ll try and go upstairs to blog and listen to the radio blog cast!! It’s nice that we have the computer room to use for this apt comlex.

I’m not sure which brought more warmth the link gdkdc posted or jake the snakes words. I think SportZWiz and Dave sensed how truley appreciative and humble Dee is. He’s genuine and real. And he does feel blessed. I never ever would have gotten this involved with the NBA if it weren’t for him. He does seem to be bringing the best out in me of my love of HOOPS and my basketball knowledge. True it’s not alot but there is some there and the more I try and learn the more depth I obtain.

The links about the new players are appreciated. As I was saying earlier I’m always in catch up mode it seems like.

SportzWiz and tom yeah I did take offense at that term marginal. guess I didn’t understand the context. Maybe the same when Jeff used the word “experiment” and I think it was chenier fan saying something that was so close to dee’s being let go I may have over reacted. sorry.

So Marginal just means being in the lower part of something. Like right now the Wiz and Memphis and Charlotte oh I think about 8 teams are “terrible” from the sporting news. “Terrible” could mean marginal? It just means they aren’t “top” like the celtics, lakers, cavs, spurs and i think they mentioned a 5th team?

I do want the new players to be involved quickly; but just not at the expense of the chemistry we’ve been working so hard to develop!! I need to listen to those audios; you all sounded pumped off of their excitement of being in DC. Thanks for posting them. This may have typos as I’m not really double checking this in word like I would usually do in my own PC. Game time only a few hours away!! How are they looking!! Go Wiz.

Juan will start.

Regarding Brendan he will have his cast off December 22nd. But it will be awhile before he will play. The reported prognosis was 4 to 6 months which should be between February and April.

He made a comment yesterday that he doesn’t like to set dates. When the doctor’s say he can comeback, he will be out on the court.

Floydbt-from what was in the Post today, it looks like Etan and AD have been on the block since Oct, if we can somehow move the “Poet” I would be happy, only because of his contract not the person. I actually think Deshawn will play better, his shot is not falling but he will bring the D and attack the boards, and he is not afraid to mix it up, and his contract I believe is a good one for the Wizards. If Nick can become complete on the defensive side of the ball, he will be the starter sooner than later, IMO.

Sportzwiz-thank you for that update on Haywood, since you are up close and personal, lol. Do you get the sense that if we make a playoff run that he will be back this year? Also coach Tap has said (as it relates to Gilbert) that there is a script for him to return, what does he mean? Something he needs to see? Defensive assignments, what?

Comment from slwiz
Time December 11, 2008 at 5:57 PM

Tom i think marginal has alot to do with unproven; not seen? so with DC fans Dee was unproven or not seen? I think that’s what was so hard for me because I have seen him at his best (and worst) so that was tough. I don’t think he ever really found his niche in dc either. In one of his blogs he sorta alluded to that. I do understand about different levels, too. HS, college, developmental league, Europe, NBA; it all is different level. I do agree, his 3 pointer is vital. He says that too. He trying hard to develop that. Hopefully he’ll be someplace to work on that and I believe it’s getabigboy talking about getting a big for JaVale to work with; it’s kinda the same thing. Even these pros need some more instruction and development. It’s not a bad thing.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time December 11, 2008 at 6:02 PM

slwiz-you have a great memory, I did use the term “experiment” and it was not a slight to Dee, I meant him in a starting role, I really believed he would be much better with the 2nd unit, as a change of pace and tempo player, not to mention the chemisty he and McGee had together. Dee is great at feeding the post and getting into the lane, and he is truly a pass first PG, so as I have said like others he will land soon I am sure.

Comment from slwiz
Time December 11, 2008 at 6:02 PM

I know I’m spending alot of time on certain subjects but i feel if I get a better understanding and sense of Tom and Jeff and Neal maybe it will help me contribute more; i won’t get so upset. So bear with me!!

I see Juan is starting. Cool. I’m truly hoping he and JaVale can be that edge for the starters. For now I believe the bench points we had against Detroit would be best for Boston. I could be wrong. I just sense having a two pronged upbeat excited attack would help the Wiz.

I never doubted Haywood wouldn’t be back in time for the playoffs. If our present bigs keep developing and Brendon can get some games under his belt for rythm and chemistry; maybe the Cavs can be beaten and round 2 seen!! (If not more!!!) :)

So how much of Dee does James and Javaris provide? I mean I know they replaced dee due to their scoring and size and 7 years in the league and alethic youth to be developed. But can they rebound and steal and be pesky? LOL will they be able to contribute to the assists and think about TEAM first; all dee’s attributes? Could be only time will tell; but these are things we did give up; but i do believe the size and scoring abilities are a big factor for us. We need some offense with our defense!! I will truly miss AD. It’s unfortunate things became this strained that we had ship out a great player and guy. I’m not too fond of mike James. His past has cluttered with echoes of selfishness. He’s definently a shoot first PG. Well see how it goes. Let’s go Wiz! I see a victory tonight for us!!

Comment from Hando
Time December 11, 2008 at 7:39 PM

hey guys.

First of all I like the trade. Just felt like something needed to be done. Hope that AD will have a nice couple of years in NO. I always liked the way he drove to the basket without any regard to human life. He was a great player and I’m sure he was a great guy in the locker room. Wish him the very best in his future career.

Not sure what to think of Javaris and Mike. Need to see them play a couple of games. maybe then I’ll have a better view on their strengths and weaknesses. Still like it though.

And no way I see a win tonight. But I still believe. Every game is winnable. IN TAP I TRUST.

Just heard the audio of Javaris. Interesting that he’s a point guard but can play the 2. Doesn’t know much of the team except he feels he can contribute and knows Nick! What else does he need to know at this time anyway!! But also he’s wanting to get into the playbook and into the film room so he’s willing to work. Those are all good signs.

Tap just spoke, the two new acquistions will be active.

He said he has a couple different plans for the game on when or if they will play, as I stated before sounds like Mike James will see more time between the two based on experience and knowledge of the system.

Comment from slwiz

“One of the hardest things in the world is change but I’m embracing it.” He’s really happy to be in a different situation. He sounds alot like Dee in that the DNP doesn’t mean he can’t offer something. He already is using “we” and “us” so he’s already embracing Washington. He know CB3 off the court in his personal life with his wife. That helps. And he has a sense of humor. He wants to lead; great quality for a point guard.

Should Mike James start rather than Juan? I mean the chemistry is there for Juan and the bench now. Or is Juan being shaped for the starting guard! I bet the later; only time will tell. Also just saw SportzWiz comment so yeah Juan is starting point guard for now. Could change with knowledge and work ethic.

It’s pretty exciting to have the new guys ready to play tonight. This is really a big upgrade for the backcourt. Maybe Deshawn has been pressing on his 3’s because he felt pressure to make up the slack for Roger. Now with Mike James around, there is another 3-ball shooter.

jeff, you are right starting about 3 minutes before the end of 1st quarter they switched it into Defensive gear and are still out playin’ us. CB3 has to pass more to show Mike to pass more; not so much on his dribble. Much harder to chase after the ball than a dribbler.
We are trying to plug the middle; lots better effort in that direction.

Hey glen how about getting that guy to chart our passes again!! TNT coverage here is so so but all they are talking about is us losing. Show some pride and heart and effort guys. Let’s go!!!

this is for the fans on the board….We have seen this before the Wizards play a great game, then follow it up with an egg! We play the young guys against the Pistons, in this game limited minutes and no DMAC?? Comment from ChenierFan
Time December 11, 2008 at 10:45 PM

That was one pathetic half. The Celts are good, but not that good. The Wiz are making a joke of themselves. I hope they can make a game of it in the second half. At least be competitive.

Poor Deshawn. He keeps getting worse. He can’t even complete passes.

Comment from slwiz
Time December 11, 2008 at 10:45 PM

I’m sorry but we may be outmaned but we are not playing as a team. If they would pull together and play competitly like they believed they were worth something; show some pride they could get this managable. But if the TV commentators are saying the Wiz are waiting for Gil to come back; that’s crazy; we have the bench that has enthusiasm and heart and guts and the desire to compete; get them in, not these outside jump shooters. And get Javaris in because James is a dribbler and has very little pass first mentality

I can’t complain about the coaching anymore. Each time it’s the same thing. EG is watching the games just like us. I’m sure we have to be patient (and possibly wait for next year), since Ed is the man for the rest of the year. I’m just looking at the development of the team as a whole. Dixon played excellent short of some untimely turnovers…
I can think of a few sequences that really cost us when we had a chance to hang around & see what happens…
Mike James is gonna be what Jarvis Hayes & Juan Dixon circa 2005 were supposed to be, I guy who comes in & jacks. He’s gonna drive us all nuts.

We go from down 10 to down 36 in a period of 15 minutes… Amazing… Only thing you can blame when that happens is level of intensity.

- Blatche played extra lazy
- Stevenson was an absolute no show (22 minutes, 4 turnovers, 0 points… Awesome production from our starting two. I know, I know, I’ve been ringing this bell for a while now. just sayin’)

At this stage I think it would be a very good idea to see if we could get some future high draft picks for Jamison and Butler. They have got to be the best scoring tandem at forward in the league and the WORST defensive tandem in the history of the NBA. I’m sure that they would be welcome additions to a lot of teams in the league. Catch is whoever got them would have to take DS and ET.

Let’s get rid of the vet influence on this team and go with the kids to see what they can really do when they get extended minutes. I’d rather lose with young guys who would be learning than vets who appear to be playing out the string.

Juan was great tonight. What the heck is the deal with JM and his limited minutes?????

VERY disappointing showing. I’m really tired of paying big $ to watch this train wreck.

He just plays lazy. If we could get Blatche to run around out there like McGee does we’d have our hands on something. Blatche is the new Kwame I’m telling you all. I’d love to be wrong but we’re 3 1/2 years in at this point… He just has that frumpy way about him… 1 good game, 1 really bad game, 2 okay maybe we have something games (that’s his week).

Comment from slwiz

wow; getabigboy I’m agreeing with you on several things so I must not be blind if someone else sees these things to. I have to admit, though, tonight, Jamison did let do of his poor shot selection. He did last game too and had more assists and rebounds. So maybe Jamison still has some leadership value. CB3; well I don’t get to see him often; but on national tv tonight he hindered the team chemistry very much so and I said that of him playing with Dee, Darius, and McGee. In fact he ignores them so he can drive and create his own shot; or just jacks up “non rhythm jumpers”. very frustrating. He stopped the runs we had several times because his jumpers didn’t fall and they got the rebounds and fast break points. Hence our momentum got stopped.

I tonight believe this whole Wiz organization is just in wait mode for Gil. How sad because if the vets just sat on the bench and the bench got to do their thing with real extended minutes; wow, now that would be interesting. Will never happen, though, will it.

For now I’d like to see Juan stay in there. He seems to be sparking the bench players and I love how he’s looking for his team mates. What 7 assists tonight. Go Juan.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time December 12, 2008 at 12:51 AM

guys I thought on the National stage we would rise up, however when we get the big game, we have been laying an egg, I am not sure what the Wizards need, what more can really be said? Deshawn has gone through more than 3 haircuts to try to shake the funk, Blatche is playing better and getting less minutes, Dixon has 5 str8 DNP’s then he comes in and out playing a few of the starters. To me this team is CB3, Dixon, Blatche, Young, Gil, Jamison (maybe), Javaris,McGuire, Haywood and McGee, everybody else trade bait.

Comment from slwiz
Time December 12, 2008 at 12:52 AM

Jeff you appear to be a rational man trying to find a reason for things. I bet you like to problem solve an issue and take action to implement a solution? I too saw EG a couple times; he appeared as a frustrated man and Ernie up in the box too appeared concerned. I’m beginning to think this whole “wait for Gil” has them locked into a position of non movment. Can’t they see if they let the bench out; let those boys loose; that when Gil come back; they will have the starters with Gil in a Gil offense; and the bench will be inspired because I just feel in my gut when Gil gets hot so will Antawn and CB3; and then the bench will come in relief and in the bench way keep that momentum up. If they could just realize now is the time to let the bench be more involved; the wins could start BEFORE gil comes in and still have good things happen. Reasonable?

AD is better than him big time plus AD suppose to be the 3 guy to trade i though ETHAN and DESHAWN should be traded first and then maybe him after and i still believe they are going to be traded in the next few days after this ”joke”lost to boston i just hope someone pick them cause i knoe that there is no way any team in the nba will take this two guys cause there reallly suckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

The Wizards are trash No Big Man with any skills in the paint a handfull of guards that might shot 4-10 on a good day,, CB and AJ are all the team really has and all the young guys that we think are going to be the teams furture superstars are not!!! Nick might be a 16ppg man but the only hope the Wizards have is getting Gil back and I think his not going to be even half as good as what he use to be lol he anit ran a game in 2years,, Gil is nothing now but a Nick Young,, a player we know has skills but hope he reaches allstar peak

In fact for now, before Gil comes back; I wouldn’t start CB3 but I would start jamison with that group of dixon, young, McGee and Blatche because he is getting a clue as to how to lead this group. They do need some leadership. Right now, I’d give up CB3’s 30 point game and let them get into double figures. The more spreading it around the more pumped and juiced they will get. Then when they need rest get CB3, DeShawn, Dom, Darius in and maybe if they’ve learned to share the ball they can keep the momentum going.

cb3 either way, one of the forwards (cb3 or Jamison) should come off the bench, we need to try something, it is not the offense it is the defense they have to spend so much trying to get there own shots that there D is lacking, with one of them on the floor we have more of a balance and spacing and of course ball movement.

Worst staff ever! Seriously, aren’t the Organization staff supposed to be there to get the fans up and help cheer the home team on? While they don’t exactly seem to be known for thier energy, tonight seemed to be about their worst showing ever. It was like we didn’t even have a mascot or anyone at home and maybe we should have even been embarassed to cheer for our Wizards against the Celtics! As I said earlier I just didn’t realize that the organization was this seriously into the “wait until Gil” mode. In my thinking I was seeing the good of the bench; the good our All stars can be; but it’s got to really be a mind set change. Especially for CB3 and Mike James. They have got to learn to give the ball up. In giving it up they will become such better players and their numbers may drop but then different ones will rise including their point total.

Also the organization’s mind set on starters being vets and rookies bench. This is sorta a flip flop and for ED who wants the vet influence of CB3 or Jamison in there. He’s got to see that CB3 is a hinderance right now. Not forever. Just for now. With the wins before Gil when Gil comes back I can see those 3 together just like everybodies talked about in the past. Is any of this reasonable?

tarik8811—I do not think having CB3 and Jamison on the floor (without Agent Zero) the defense is what is suffering having them on the floor, 102 ppg, c’mon. With the big 3 it is all about scoring and in some games when they have it going you can mask the D, however with Gil down we have to shake it up. And I love CB3 but I wish he would go back to the post to intiate the offense instead of the top of the key.

I think I understand your idea CB3. But we’ve seen that line up before. It’s the keeping them both out that will help the start. We need the start of the 1st quarter and the 3rd quarter. We get so buried that the other bench players come in and just can’t sustain it long enough. That may be why we don’t see some of the “good” ones in there Jeff. Tap may be trying to keep them rested for the final push. I’ve seen JaVale. He gives so MUCH. He’s good for about 20-25 minutes. He seemed better tonight so maybe he’s ready to stretch to 22-28 or so.

However they need to know that we are passionate about basketball and about the Wizards, that is why I am a fan of Juan (track record) every stop in his basket ball career he was told he was to small and could not get it done, every level but the NBA as of yet, Agent Zero is the same being told when he would get zero minutes, and now one of the top players in the NBA, and CB3 coming out of Racine, with his adversity and being snubbed on draft day, and on that day he promised the teams that passed on me are going to pay, no an multi year all star, my point to this and that we have players with pride and heart and that is who I want to see on the court period.

tarik the reason I’d like Juan and DeShawn in as starters as the shake up is because DeShawn does know how to pass the ball. His assists are in the stats. Tom could probably rattle them off better than me. So with both them assisting; and then getting the ball movement going they will get the O going. Then as the ball gets moving it will come back to them; better in rhytm for there jumpers to fall. So yeah, DeShawn is slumping horribly but I do believe with ball movement his numbers will improve. But with both CB3 and Antawn in he doesn’t get the ball movement he needs.

Still going to comment Jeff, sorry to many things to say!!

I didn’t know that about those guys. I’ll think about that more.

I’m still not clear if you feel CB3 and Antawn help the team by starting together. I do understand the energy to score takes away their energy to defend.

Oh my gosh, Jeff, Antawn is shouldering the burden of getting the rebounds on O and D; that’s why CB3 is shouldering the O and taking so many shots. They both know they need O and D so it’s there way of problem solving? Did that make sense? One is taking over the O for the sake of the team and the other is taking over the D?

The problem more so than in past years, are evident in opp scoring avg , 102 ppg, I mean we have to score at least 103 to win? In the past the offense was so good that we could run and gun and win some games, but with Haywood being out with Gil, to many holes in the ship, and you cannot mask the defense anymore.

When you lose by 32 points, there is no point in singling out one guy — whether it’s Stevenson or Mike James or whoever.

Anyone who thinks Antawn is somehow a bad player, or is not playing well, doesn’t understand much about basketball. Antawn didn’t play particularly well last night, but over this first part of the season he is playing at an all star level.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 12, 2008 at 9:51 AM

On the trade: yes, Memphis would have given Javaris just for their pick back. In this trade, that’s what they did and they also had to give a 2d rounder to NO.

We couldn’t do the trade that simple way, because it would have put us in luxury tax territory. The approximately $200K we saved in Mike’s salary vs. Antonio’s kept us south of that border. That’s why the trade was done in the way it was done.

That’s also why we gave up a B+ player (Antonio) for a C+ plus player (James), and NO got the 2d rounder too. We were over a barrel.

Are we a better team today because of the trade? No, we’re a worse team.

Might we be better long term because of the trade? Maybe. Ernie thinks highly of Crittenton’s “potential”. If he is right about Javaris, then maybe it turns out ok.

Comment from gbkdc
Time December 12, 2008 at 11:11 AM

All I can say is, YIKES!!!

Tom, I agree 100% about Antawn. I have no idea why people are so hard on him. I just don’t get it. Okay, maybe he has some weaknesses on defense, but in my opinion, the rest of his game more than makes up for it. We can’t expect him to be perfect! Every player has weaknesses. It doesn’t mean we should trade them all, we would have no one left!

And YEAH… there is plenty of blame to go around. I’m not going to judge either of the new guys after one game. They both had bad games, but they practically just stepped off the plane, don’t know any of our players yet in terms of in-game situations, and they must be really nervous. I know I would be. And I’m also guessing that they wanted to score a lot of points to help the team, although maybe they didn’t go about it in the best way.

Okay, let’s put this behind us and move on… better luck next time…

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 12, 2008 at 11:55 AM

I think the clearest message I get from this trade — I mean from Ernie’s being willing to let Daniels go, because it was *so important* to pick up Crittenton — is that our GM thinks we are going to miss the playoffs this year.

If you are going to be in the lottery, you might as well have a high pick. That might be what he is thinking. I’ll be pretty surprised if we win more than 25 games this year. That should put us in the top handful of picks in June.

Tom is correct…
AD had to be packaged to get the deal done & land Crit & his “potential”.

Give him & James a little grace. They were unable to participate in the pre game shoot around & Crit had to borrow/get shoes in our team colors from Gil.
To ad insult, it was clear that DMac was literally pointing to the spots Crit was supposed to be on offense while they were playing the last 6 minutes.
The same for James by Butler during his stints.
Pretty funny stuff… Not great for a guys confidence I’m sure.

Comment from neal
Time December 12, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Well, I don’t agree that is was a bad trade. The risks that Daniels will periodically be injured from now on make the trade of him for James fine with me. And the pick for Crittenton is a win-win for both clubs, especially for us, since that pick would have eventually turned into had to a second rounder unless Memphis got a lot better.

Did you guys notice the Celtics’ defense? All their offense stars play tough D. I think we got one easy basket in the whole first half. Everyone offensive possession was tough for us.

I just don’t buy that our offensive stars should get a break on D because they need to conserve their energy. That’s a lousy outlook and we’ll never compete with the top teams with that mindset. We can’t stand to have three guys on the floor playing sub-par defense. That’s a no-win situation. Right now McGuire, Songaila and maybe Stevenson are the only ones playing good D. McGee will eventually do so, I guess, when he stops making rookie mistakes. I’m not sure Blatche will ever learn to play smarter. That’s not nearly enough D for a competitive play-off team.

antawn jamison does not have “weaknesses” on defense; he has no defensive abilities. he has literally the slowest feet on defense i have ever seen. he doesn’t switch on screens well, he doesn’t close out on threes. he is our number one liability on defense and it causes huge problems for us against teams that have an effective frontcourt.

his game is not clutch; i would never want to see him have the ball as the clocks winding down in a close game. his game is ugly and soft; the “amazing” flip shot that steve and phil love so much is disgusting to watch. half the time i dont think he even tries to make it, whining afterwards when he doesn’t get the foul call. he’s old. now he’s overpaid. he loves to shoot threes although he shoots them at 30%.

i think his game is extremely overrated and i wanted him to be traded last year.

my biggest problems with the wizards are twan and deshawn – two extremely one-sided players (at opposite ends of the floor), except stevenson this year isnt even peroforming his specialty so i don’t know what that makes him.

so i won’t be told i’m not a fan i love caron, nick, blatche, mcgee (possibly), mcquire, watching haywood breakout last year was extremely exciting for me, and uh, go wiz!

Comment from neal
Time December 12, 2008 at 7:18 PM

Well, I don’t think Jamison is that slow. He’s just not on the balls of his feet and really trying to make things happen on defense, just like several of our players. They apparently haven’t had to give 100% since college, or maybe ever. The earth is going to have to move to get them to change old habits.

I love his little flip shots and runners and that short hook he’s developed. But I agree, he doesn’t shoot a high enough percentage to be shooting from the perimiter IMO. If we have to shoot from out there, we have others that can do it better.

I like Stevenson, but it’s time for him to sit down. I think he’s already been given slack because of his string of starts. That’s enough already. His slump has obviously gotten to his head – he has no confidence left. He should sit on the bench a couple of weeks and clear his head. Then see if he can come back fresh in a reserve role with reduced expectations.

Can anyone tell me what the acronym “IMO” stands for? I see it in the blogs very often and can’t firgure out what it means.

Rough start for our new guards last night. James was 0-6 in about 33 seconds of play. But some of those shots were close to going in. And Javaris must have been wearing Brendan Haywood’s shorts. It looked several sizes too big. It was down around his shins.

Seriously though, did anyone notice Andray hitching up his shorts when he took up a defensive position guarding a guy down on the blocks? (I kid you not) If your shorts are so long that you have the distraction of needing to hitch them up in the middle of a play, then it’s time to visit the team tailor for an adjustment. He’s the guy sitting next to the team shoe shiner, who sits next to the team dental hygenist, etc.

With all the changes and new players, coaches, unstable rotations, etc. It is what it is.

We, as well as most of the teams in the nba, had no answer for the 20-2 World Champion Boston Celtics…specifically Garnett/Perkins, and all those layups. We’ve been needing bigs for so long, it isn’t even funny even more. The good thing is that Haywood blossomed last year, but he also needed help down there. Even with our big three all-stars, we wouldn’t win and will not win majorly without an inside presence ALONG WITH HAYWOOD. AJ/CB/and Gil are all All-stars, yes, but those three players alone aint gonna get us over the hump, no matter the stats, their present or past all-star status, etc. Analyze the celts for a minute, analyze the bulls (jordan championship years), pistons, etc. IT AIN’T ABOUT THE ALL-STARS, ITS ABOUT PLAYERS KNOWING THEIR ROLES AND PERFORMING THEM, WHETHER YOU’RE IN THE GAME FOR 2 MINUTES OR 20 MINUTES, PERIOD……AND I’M OUT!!

See ya Saturday

one more thing….If your whole team revolves this much, on one person (granted this one person is a beast). The problems with this team were waiting to happen anyway, whether Gil was hurt now or in the future, our current problems were inevitable. A team is comprised of more than one player. We should at least be somewhat competitive in more than just a few games, no matter who is in the game.

Tom,

How about wilcox for E.T. The make almost the same and wilcox only has one year remaining, rather than 2 years for E.T.

dcbutler-let me say if we could somehow work some magic and get Wilcox for the Poet, I would say yes hang up the phone and buy a one way ticket for him to OKC!

I still think a telling sign is the report in the Post from Ivan Carter, when he said that we shopped ET and AD for Larry Hughes, I mean if we are still looking at a package with ET for anybody (though Hughes would have been great) go for it, work some magic EG! It will be something when Gil comes back, it will be a crowded back court, from the outside makes you think we just may have another move in store, IMO

dcbutler-I looked at the roster and salaries, I have to give EG some credit, we actually have some players we can move including Mike James (even with his trade restriction, he can still be moved for a player straight up, just not in a package of players) I looked at the Bobcats and Gearld Wallace, who is on the market, as well as Hughes and Wilcox, the years and the salaries on these players actually do match, wow if we could reshape the team with another trade or 2, maybe we can make a run this year, always optomistic right?

JM1990 lets hope he has that plan i dont see why he would make such a move unless there were another move that would improve us behind it.. the only problem i have had with EG was the firing of EJ and that was a personal problem more than anything.. lets face facts he is a good GM and can get us the right players to lift us till we can get some players back.. and he is working all this under limited funds and extreem rules about the tax

ChenierFan — don’t know if someone already answered your question but IMO = “In my opinion”. Sometimes you see IMHO (in my humble opinion).

Slwiz — way up the thread you asked whether james/critt brought any of what Dee brought. My answer to that is no, not at all. Very different kinds of players. I was really invested in Dee emotionally; I hated to see him go.

As I said in a post yesterday, in the short term we’re worse; in the long term we’re better if Javaris Crittenton is a good player.

Some of my friends are saying “we’re going to look back on this as a steal.” They apparently have crystal balls, and I don’t have one. Javaris had one year in college, where his numbers were pretty sketchy, although he showed that he was a good athlete. He has had 1.25 years in the league, during which he hasn’t shown anything yet. Obviously, Ernie likes him.

I just read some comments about Juan should have been cut over Dee Brown.

Anyone (Neal) who thinks Juan should have been cut is just ” HATE’ N ” on Juan! Check the stats

In the past “3 games” Juan has had 41 points & 18 assist

“FOR THE YEAR” Dee has had 41 points & 33 assist

Juan’s already matched his points production & has more than half the assist total!

No further arguments ,Your Honor
I rest my case!

Tom… Dee & AD sucked!
I’ve been wanted to ship AD for a while so i’ll take a guard that knows how to put pressure on the D (we’ll have to live with some of his drama sure) & score over a guard that gets me 5 / 3 & 1 when he’s actually healthy.
& Dee has no business in the league.

I don’t know how you think we’re worse? But anyway… God bless you (& Dee)!

No, M2, that’s actually not true.
