Game Day Pistons

8:34 AM….Dave Johnson ready for a big home win like the one we almost had against the Lakers..almost has been the story of the season and tonight’s opponent the Pistons is another reminder of that. Wizards got down on the road against the Pistons in the second game of the season and then almost pulled it out. But there is that word almost again. We can point to a number of games when the Wizards fell behind by double digits and then staged come backs that fell short. Antawn Jamison said it best(audio is on yesterday’s bog) when he noted they have to play better defensively so they don’t find themselves in a hole and too often quick shots that have led to transition buckets for the opposition have only added dirt to the hole.Looking forward to BLOGGING together as we keep the BLOGCAST going—radio and blogging at the same time—spread the word….starts at 7 PM…on radio it is ESPN 980 AM in Washington….94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia….92.7 FM in Southern Maryland….1370 AM in Baltimore and online…..there will be a LISTEN LIVE link..if that does not work we will add a link to the BLOG

Obviously I’m not out there playing and I also realize no matter what sport it is everyone seems to be an expert from the sidelines, but with that being said, I think the key to the Wizards success in this game and games to come is not allowing opposing teams to shoot such high percentages in the 1st and 3rd quarters. For some reason they seem to come out slow at the beginning of halves and it allows for double digit deficits and it’s just too hard to pull yourself out of that hole. So stronger starts to the half I think is the key to a big and much needed victory tonight!

How can Dee Brown and Stevenson possibly keep up with a starting backcourt of Stuckey and Iverson?

And if that’s how the matchups are……you’re telling me that Caron Butler has to worry about chasing Rip Hamilton all over the court?

Of course the initial thought will be, “Well, let’s see Rip try to guard Tuff Juice.”

But that’s the thing, Caron doesn’t seem too drawn to the mid-range post game, even when guarded by a smaller guy.

I know that Jamison said that the Wizards can “play small,” but can’t help but be skeptical. I’m very curious to know Tapscott’s game plan on defense.

JD
I am optomistic in your due diligent analysis of the Wizards so called winning problems. However I am a
realist in saying talent and confidence in ones abilities will usually win the day! We have to get our swag back by any means necessary because the body english we are showing is not positive right now! Will it take Agent Zero and Brendan to get it back , I would have to say yes at this moment in time! There has to be a serious change in what we have been doing to make a make up for the loss of both of those veteran talent base! However we must stop the three pointers to ease the bleeding!

Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 9, 2008 at 12:57 PM

truthaboutit, it should be interesting to see. Tapscott mentioned this yesterday, I think one of the first things the Pistons will try to do is get the ball in the post to Sheed and see how JaVale can handle him down there and with essentially four shooters it will be tougher to help.

On offense one thing Tap has tried recently is a pick and roll with Caron and Antawn. A lot of the NBA teams will try to switch this because bigger 3’s aren’t as much of a mismatch down low.

However, if detroit tries a switch or Tawn seals Rip on the screen i think antawn vs. Rip is a huge mismatch the Wizards can work to their advantage.

You also could see Tap run a bigger lineup out there and go zone, something like Dray, JaVale, Tawn and Caron,
then you have Tawn and Caron with much littler guards and you are playing a zone on defense so you dont have to run with Rip around a million screens. Should be interesting.

Bloggers
How do you like this line up.
Pg:Caron/ Stevenson/Brown
Sg:Young/ Daniels/
Sf:Jamison/ Dmac
Pf:Dray/ Etan/Pecherov
C: Mcgee/ Songalia
I like Caron just for this game at the point because of his passing/stealing ability.

Comment from truthaboutit

Thanks for the answer…

Yea, I like JaVale’s chances in defending Rasheed because of his length (’Sheed seems to like that post up fade-away, especially from the baseline and JaVale’s contest may bother Wallace) and his moxie (hopefully McGee won’t let Rasheed get in his head).

I like that P&R option with AJ and Tuff Juice working the 2-man game. Hopefully Antawn’s jumpshot will be on and he can make Detroit pay if he decides to fade out.

The zone just may work in this instance with AI, Stuckey and Rip not being dead-eye from long distance.

I just hope the Wiz don’t let Herrmann go off like he did last time…or, in focusing on the Argentinian, they don’t make anyone else look like an All-Star.

Go Wiz!!

And no more Kwame Brown lay-up drives from the 3-point line!!! I’m looking at you Andray Blatche…..

Comment from SportzWiz

sheed is very intimidating/scary at least to me he is :) , I’m not 7′0 then again :) , Rasheed has a lot of offensive weapons, so it will be a very big test tonight for JaVale.

Regarding hermann, I’m guessing Tap is showing that team plenty of film from the last time these two teams played.

So does anyone think that the Grunfeld will pull off a trade before the deadline? Personally, I don’t think he will do anything until Arenas gets back so he can evaluate how the team plays together as the “big three,” but if we listen to what Arenas said earlier when he said he would wait and see what their record was before he or Brendan came back to play, then we may not know this year how they all will play together. Then the question becomes how long can we wait until they fall into a deeper hole. Just wanted to know your thoughts…

JAVALLE IS OUR ONLY LINE OF DEFENSE MAY WE CAN PUT BLATCHE ON HIM BUT THAT OPENS UP DOORS AT POWERFORWARD. If WE PUT SONGALIA IN THERE THEN THE HOUSE OF CARDS WILL DEFINITELY FALL BECAUSE OF HIS 1 INCH VERTICLE. SO THATS ALL WE HAVE TO STOP HIM ,OYEA THERE’S ETAN AND WE GIVE THEM 5 FOULS IN THAT SENARIO!

truth as you will learn Aundra always uses the caps (but I love the Anchorman quote even though it was on three times this weekend).

Aundra as for your comment on our big men, remember even though Dwight Howard was bigger and more athletic the one player that gave him the most problems was Darius Songaila. Sometimes people overreact to size and athleticism, but Darius does a great job of moving players off the block, making them work to catch the ball and forcing contested shots. He won’t block a ton of shots but he plays very good one-on-one defense in the post

You know guys no matter what, “we just neeed to get a win” for the team and the fans. When you look a the standings in the NBA and see the Wizards at or near the bottom, that is enough of a wake up call to me. This team over the year has had a “swagger” and that has been lost this year, not sure how to get it back? Whether it is a big play, a gig win? But it seems as though the mental approach to this year with all of this losing has truly worn on the team and of course team play. I know we hear how this team has great leadership from our two co captains, however who is the player or player that can give the team it’s swagger? (I know the easy answer is Gil) but is there anybody else?

Comment from jeffmalone1990

I really believe we are catching the Pistons at a great time, they are not playing well, and our under 500 since the Iverson trade. Really think we can get a win against them tonight, heck even Hamilton was kicked out of there last game with a his 2nd tech against (Jared Jeffries, lol) There team chemistry and finger pointing is already starting, could be a good night for the Wizards.

No one ever seems to recognize D-Song’s grit and hustle as much as I do.

He uses his strength to the max, actually sprints between spots on the floor when on D, etc., etc. (if only his hustle were contagious to others).

Instead, people focus on him flap-jacking his arms when running and his paltry rebounding statistics.

I’m not exactly sure I have a point, but what’s a guy gotta do to get a Songaila jersey?

Essay contest?

millie mill, I believe if you donate either a can of food for the collect-a-can-from-a-fan, donate shoes on thursday for the jamison shoe drive, donate a toy for the toy drive on December 19, donate a coat for caron’s coats for kids on january 10, (only one not all) you receive a free ticket voucher. That means you can bring that voucher to a game and get a free ticket to the game.

songaila has been a good spark. i have nothing bad to say about him but he doesn’t seem like a crucial game changer to me. We have a small group of CONSISTENT players like tough juice, twan, a.d., and darius that get it done every night but it is not enough. If our usuals play good an if we get a strong perfomance out of 2 of our 3 inconsistents(NICK, DESHAWN, AND DRAY) we will win 2nite.

Comment from JEDOLPHNFANLIFE

I’ll be at the game tonight in the nose bleeds with the fam. Hopefully Tap wont do anything dumb like in Chicago and play the entire team (that does not reflect consistency in O or D) and dosen’t limit my boy McGee to 10 minutes of play time. And what’s this wait and see bull by Arenas, he needs to get out there and perform when physically capable, the Wizards didn’t pay him all this money for him to sit on the bench in a suit and yap his mouth.

Day 6 – Thursday, December 11 – Antawn’s Sole4Souls Shoe Drive
Forward Antawn Jamison, Adidas and Volkswagon encourage fans to donate gently-worn sneakers at that night’s game vs. the Boston Celtics (donations will benefit Coalition for the Homeless of Washington, DC)

Usually right when you walk in there are boxes with people there to give you the ticket coupons.

FYI you can’t get a coupon to that night’s game it is for a future game.

truth

songaila definately uses his strength to the max, but you only notice this because hes always undersized in his matchups – hes too slow to guard someone his own size.

he does play defense with great intensity and switches screens well, but don’t you think this is pretty pointless since the offensive player he switches to almost always blows by him resulting in a classic songaila hack across the arms?

oh and hes the worst rebounding forward on our team, so maybe i was wrong, he doesnt use his strength to the max.

this terrible terrible first month of the season has just helped define who i watch the games to see. and really isnt it EG’s job to put together a team of players that people want to watch?

we could lose every game in a season and i would still watch if we had javale mcgee, andray blatche, nick young, caron butler, dominic mcquire, haywood, and arenas on the team.

if our team was jamison, stevenson, daniels, dixon, songaila, thomas… i dont know if i could make myself watch. thast just ugly, disinteresting basketball with no hope for the future.

i dont really mind watching dee brown.

side note haywoods pretty easy to listen to on television.

Are you people really wizards fans? you say a lot of valid points on how to improve the wizards but I’m amazed to see nobody has come across what the real issue is. What did the wizards have last year that they don’t have this year?……BRENDAN HAYWOOD!!!!! If the wizards acquire someone who is just as good as brendan, just as tall as brendan, just as heavy and a great presence in the post like brendan, the wizards will turn their season around in an instance. The wizards are supposed to be getting Javaris Crittenton but do they need any more guards? The answer is no….the guards we have that aren’t performing well simply have to humble themselves down and step up their game. We need height not guards and as soon as the wizards realize that they’ll be able to wipe the pistons all over the floor tonight and become a playoff team again. PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE.

Sites from the arena – Gilbert is doing dribbling drills from sideline to sideline right now. Wes Unseld and Gheorghe Muresan were sitting having dinner in the press room. That’s a lot of height and size at one table.

As for what coach said pregame. Same starting lineup, Pech is inactive. He said he could go one of two ways with Detroit’s small lineup. He’ll either try to go real big or go small and try to run with them, it will depend a lot on who has the hot hand and who’s playing well.

Hey Tom didn’t you say that for this year there really wasn’t any money to obtain another quality player?

So why keep talking about Gil and Brendon and those good old days. We have this TALENTED group, though raw and I’m tired of them getting the raw end of the stick. They are working very hard and those wins will come!!!

About Darius. I personally believe he could be a great post player for our forwards and guards. He’s been mostly ignored though, IMO.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 9, 2008 at 7:48 PM

Gil just made 6 35 footers in a row. Basially the spot between the 3 point line and halfcourt and he was just draining them.

Pesch is a little behind the other guys right now on defense, the injury last year and this summer have just put him behind those guys for the time being. He is working really hard, and I’m sure his time will come.

We don’t need Agent Zero even though he has become one of my favorite players….he’s great!!!!!(HIBATCHI!!!!)…..we need someone to help BLATCHE and JaVale…..they bust their asses as it is…..it’s our two dominant power fowards trying to deal with the leagues dominant centers. size-wise it’s not fair for JaVale and Andray…..get them a center on the team and that will relieve them…..JaVale has stepped his game up he doesn’t even look like a rookie and Andray has stepped up so much he’s hitting three’s now…..the two wizards fowards are maxing themselves out trying to keep the wizards afloat. they might get injured working this hard god-forbid….send them help because JaVale and Blatche are working like slaves. they shouldn’t have to…send a big man cause dudes like Etan and pecherov aren’t doing much and Songalia is just Mr. Consistent so we can depend on him all the time but I gotta watch the game…..Peace!!!

I keep seeing that when McGee was in the game, the pick and roll was open EVERY time, they dont throw him the ball, its an easy two.

I’ve been seeing the same thing with Darius too! It’s like our all stars and veterns don’t trust our underperforming players and rookies. Gotta trust them sometime; especially tonight because the all stars are having a rough go of things.

4 passes on that possession

Comment from slwiz
Time December 9, 2008 at 9:12 PM

If the all stars don’t pass the ball how can our starters JaVale and Dee have any energy! Same with the bench. It’s the passes and ball movement that creates energy; as well as the defensive hustle. The two feed off each other to get momentum going.

Juan Dixon played *a great game* tonight. He was incredibly heady, all his shots went in, and he scrapped Iverson to a standstill. Just terrific. Add 4 boards and 7 assists, and you have a fantastic outing.

another great game by stevenson… 1/8
every1 else played well, 5 should be daniels/dixon, butler, songalia, jamison, blatche and mcgee when blatche gets in foul trouble… i really don’t get why stevenson is still starting and playing 32 min for that matter

Here’s to a great win, and our bench again they are top 5 in the NBA in scoring. Also Blatche seems to me a different player, Darius, DMAC have all played well with minutes let’s keep it up for Boston, we will need that same effort or better.

Dominic was the other hero. It is really fun to watch that kid play ball right now.

Nick was solid — I note that he had no fouls and no turnovers. That’s a good sign for his game. He was a productive shooter and chipped in w/ a steal, 2 assists and a rebound too.

Blatche was solid for what the 4th or 5th game in a row? That is a very good sign too.

Songaila is such a better player this year than last — that’s very gratifying to see.

JaVale, obviously, got eaten alive by Rasheed Wallace. Got to expect that.

Dee only got a half dozen minutes, but he played pretty well, even though they went up on us. That really wasn’t on him.

Obviously, Caron had a monster night — but so did Antawn, even though his shot wouldn’t fall. He did *everything else* — including 12 boards and 3 steals.

How sweet a win can be when it’s been a while, huh?

As one of AD’s most vocal critics, I have to congratulate him on his floor game tonight. He was a positive influence on the Wizards success…However, I still want to see him toward the end of the bench.

CB was terrific. All-Star quality game. AJ was his tremendously solid self…another All-Star.

DM and AB played offensively and defensively great!!!

Juan was VERY impressive at the point.

Contributions by DM, AB and JD made the victory.

Coach T has got to give JD serious consideration as the Wiz starting point guard. A combination of JD, AJ, CB, JM and AB would be tough to beat.

I still have to wonder at the lack of minutes to JM. What’s the deal? He starts, then disappears?????

Why were Wallace’s minutes limited by the Pistons in Q4? That was stupid. Is the NBA sending some sort of message to teams?

Our bench really has played well all year, and I think are getting better. Love to see Juan and Nick playing together, as well Blatche and McGee with DMAC. Darius I have in the past ripped you, however let me be the first to say your play this year has been huge (might be in the running for most improved player)

getabigboy — the Pistons also didn’t play Maxiell, or Amir Johnson, or Kwame. None of their big guys.

To be honest, I don’t think they are a very good team. Billups was their best player by far. They’re old at almost every spot. Stuckey isn’t ready for a starting 1 role, and their guards off the bench (Afflalo and Bynum) aren’t NBA players.

Comment from jeffmalone1990

Tom totally agree w\ you about the Pistons, Coach Curry did not play his bench (one of the best in the NBA) He really may have lost his team

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time December 9, 2008 at 11:26 PM

Darius has played the same game as long as he has been in the NBA. The Wiz are finally catching up to him. This guy really understands the game and makes the right offenseive move EVERY time. The Wiz are expecting him to play BIG man on defense…not fair; he is a 4, at best, but he does the defensive job of the 5 better than most. I would not advocate him as a starter, but, with the right team, he might be a strong candidate for 6th man.

Comment from getabigboyoffense

Love your posts Tom

Obviously the Piston’s coach didn’t feel that Maxiell, Johnson or Kwame matched up well against our rotation. Same stupid mistake that the Wiz have been guilty of in recent games.

Are you suggesting that the Pistons are less of a team because they traded Billups for Iverson? And that Billups is a better player than Iverson, who is the #3 scorer in the history of the NBA??

Comment from ChenierFan
Time December 9, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Coach Tapscott owes Curry a beer for keeping Sheed, Maxiel on the pine during crunch time. Thanks, we’ll take it. Did Maxiel (who kills us) even get in at all?

Well done, Caron – looking like an all-star again. Jamison made heady plays down the stretch – great steal on Iverson.

Dominic is becoming a game changer on the D. Plus he hit a J tonight.

This was the best win of the year!

I hope we get Crittenton. This is a guy with tremendous athletic ability who deserves a chance to play. He is caught in a jam up of guards in Memphis. He can make plays from the point guard position.

Comment from jeffmalone1990

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time December 9, 2008 at 11:44 PM

ChenierFan, I read everyone of your posts and usually agree with you, but we really don’t need to trade a high draft pick for a third-team point guard. We have a few point guards who would be considered better than Crittenton. If he were so good he would not be the Memphis #3 point guard. Let’s gibe Juan a chance.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 9, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Getabigboy — yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Billups is a much better player than AI. AI scores a lot, but he isn’t all that efficient a scorer. He is very very good, but Billups is substantially better.

Note, for example, the rings on his fingers. Note too that after the trade, the Nuggets got *better* immediately, and the Pistons got worse immediately.

But, don’t worry — you are with a lot of people who make the same mistake about Iverson.

Comment from getabigboyoffense

Tom M.

I guess I’m in good company with those other people who make the same mistake (your opinion) about Iverson. I would think that any GM (your dream position) would take a guaranteed Hall-Famer with the NBA 3rd highest scoring average for (Billups) a good NBA guard. You think that Billups is a much better player than AI???? even at this stage of their careers…
Now we HAVE TO SERIOUSLY QUESTION your understanding of the game!

Comment from ChenierFan
Time December 10, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Tom may be more knowledgeable on the technicalities than I am, but I think the pick the Wiz would give up for Crittenton was the conditional #1 pick that we got from Memphis in exchange for Juan Carlos Navarro, so draft pick wise it would not be a loss like it would if it was a regular first round pick.

I could be wrong, though. Plus, I think Crittenton is only 20 years old.

GO BENCH!

What a Game! They turned a real snoozer in the 1st quarter into all these positive posts :)

Well that one should have secured Juan a few extra minutes of playing time. Great all around game on both ends.

Has anybody else noticed the change in Andray since the “change”? Only the foul trouble took him out of tonights game. He was again a beast. Who didn’t like that dunk over Rasheed? lol.

Caron is an all star and proved it again. That guy never stops. He is like the energizer bunny.

My favorite play has to be when Dominic stole the ball from Stuckey mid air on Stuckey’s shot attempt. Dominic was not to be denied. I don’t know? Did Rodman ever do that? :)

Darius is always where he is supposed to be. He has a great understanding of the game. I don’t think anyone on the team cuts back door to the basket better than he does. On defense he moves well and sure kept Rasheed at bay a bit tonight.

Getabigboyoffense the only reason Detroit gave up Billups for AI was money. AI’s very large contract expires after this season. The Pistons are obviously planning to eject their aging core and start rebuilding with all that money. IMO only … Billups is twice the guard AI could ever think of being. AI is 3rd all time on the scoring list, but, I’ll bet he would trade that for all of Chauncey’s rings. AI’s fingers might be tattoo’d but they sport no ring. Had he been a little more of a “team” player and a little less of a stat stuffer who knows? Maybe he has a couple rings by now. As to not playing Maxiell (especially against Darius) Big Mistake on their part. I’ll take another team screwing up LOL.

Hey guys,

What a game, Huh? About JM, he could be the recipient of some back door baskets if he knew how to play the floor….LOL…Besides going for alley oops. He is VERY young, when it comes to his floor work. Just watch him on offense, i think CB3 tried to hit him early in the game. In due time, he’ll get it.

Oklahoma has some seasoned bigs we may be able to get for E.T. (I.E. CHRIS WILCOX/U OF MD, BABY!!!!) Tom, I didn’t check the numbers, so it’s just a thought…lol…We have three guards not including Daniels? Hey, we may be able to get rid of that salary for a steady guard somewhere, you never know. AD was a step slow tonight (actually stuckey drove on him at will), his career may be a wrap.

Valuable lesson for all all-stars that want a ring:

Michael Jordan stopped being selfish and let Chicago build a team around him to win a championship (plus a few more). Kobe has now learned the same lesson. AI….Jury is still out

It may not totally apply, but like my grand dad used to say “it’s better to be a young fool than a old fool, cuz when you’ re a young fool, you got time to change” hmmmmmmm???

About JD:

The wiz were wrong for letting him go to Portland in the first place. Maybe $$ was an issue, but he was one of the defensive gurus when he was here the first time. He now has learned to handle the rock better. It is not necessary to be a star all the time. Sometimes you just want someone that can get the job done ;-)

It’s only one game, but it’s a bldg block….whew, boston is next…..AND AB SHOULD BE STARTING DANG IT, WITH DM COMING IN NO LATER THAN 7TH. HIS DEFENSE CREATES OFFENSE…..

Can We Duplicate The Process!

That is the only thing I would like to know!
The game ball for the starters I feel goes to
our Leader Antwaan Jamison because he played the
3 6 5 0zero role to the T. He didn’t shoot the three ball that much but he was disruptive all night long and for a 32 year old he is a great rebounder. The best part is Jamison committed ZERO TURNOVERS in 38:57 minutes which is Unbelievable! The bench played there roles to perfection but Songalia and Dixon stood out amongst the group with there rebounds, assists and and points and only committed Dixon 1 TURNOVER and Songalia Zero which is outstanding for them! I also like to give praise to Mcgiure, Young and Blatche for maintain peace through strength in there core fundamentals! We still have a way to go in our three pointer field goal percentage because if we increase that by 10 % then the clouds over head will be no more!

I don’t think we can just trade a pick for Crittenton (or anyone). For one thing, we already have 15 players (and, no, you can’t shed a salary by “waiving” someone in the NBA). For another, we are up against the luxury tax.

So… we’d have to trade someone — I think Pech’s salary would probably work, if the Grizzlies want him.

This all sounds like baseless rumor.

Aundra — I agree; Jamison had an excellent night even though his shot wasn’t dropping.

But, Juan was the leader last night. He played a *great* game.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 10, 2008 at 9:59 AM

From the Post article, it looks like acquiring Crittenton would push us over the luxury tax limit. That means he would cost us several million dollars this year. I have *a hard time* believing Abe is going to ok that for a player who has never had any impact in the league.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 10, 2008 at 10:35 AM

I do it as well but I think we just take for granted Caron Butler sometimes.

The guy had 33 points and in the 3rd quarter (our biggest problem all year) he had 11 points and 5 assists.

He’s an All-Star on and off the court so im giving my gameball to CB3, but I would like to have 6 gameballs because Juan Dixon, Tawn, Darius, Dom and Dray all deserved them. Dray with maybe the two biggest plays of the game to keep the momentum going.

I hate speculating on trades because part of the problem is so many rumors dont come true.

To be honest I really don’t knwo much about Crittenton,

Last year he wasn’t with LA when we played the Lakers, and the one game i missed due to illness was the Memphis game. So i never even got to see him last year.

If I hear something more concrete I will let you know. Right now im focused more on last night’s win.

Comment from Tom Mandel

No reason whatever to think that Javaris Crittenton brings anything special. I don’t know why Ernie would bother, unless he can deal Pech for the kid and would rather have a guard than a big at the end of the bench.
