Tom M., Thanks for the insight on the NBA rule that makes the player swap I proposed illegal. How about Marbury + cash (his salary) for ET and AD + cash (their combined salaries)?
Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 2, 2008 at 12:53 PM
getabigboyoffense salaries have to match so you just cant throw in cash. Check out the ESPN NBA Trade machine which i linked below. This will tell you if any of your proposals would be approved by the league. For instance if you threw in Darius with Etan and AD then you could get Marbury, but Etan and Ad’s salaries don’t match up with Marbury’s.

Im not too sure we want to give up Songaila he has a fair contract for a role player and he’s been stepping his game up from how he did at the beggining of the season…

But if we do, do this we would unload ET, AD, and Darius’s contracts and Stephon Marbury’s would also be up.

Antonio- $7,350,000
Etan- $6,600,000
Brendan- $6,000,000
Darius- $4,526,000
contracts are up after next season. Darius is a player option. If he doesnt pick it up…we have roughly 24.5 mil off the books…maybe we can make a run at Amare Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson, or even bring back Larry Hughes.

Amare and Bosh are going to cost a lot more than Mr. Haywood though. I don’t know that there would be a significant enough offensive plus to justify the expense. Especially if Gil comes back at 100%.

Haywood made this team better last year with his D because he is a big guy and McGee is good but skinny and people like Howard would just bang him out and slam it over him thats why D.Song shut him down at 6’9″ is because he was strong enuf to keep him off the block lets get our guys back see were we are at i know we need a point Gard with some shoting ability but other than that we dont need to switch 2-3 players get get the same thing we have now

I find it *amazing* that anyone would think about *trading for* Starbury and his contract — the knicks are doing *anything they can* to negotiate a buy-out with him. More and more, I get it that lots of folks on this blog are Wizards fans w/o really much basketball knowledge — not to mention business knowledge!!
Marbury will soon be a free agent, after the buy-out. Then he’ll be available at the veteran minimum, and we *still* won’t be able to sign him. We already have 15 guys, and we are flirting w/ luxury tax. *Please* learn some of this stuff, folks.
Moreover, even if we *could* sign him — I’m sure we wouldn’t want to. *No* he is not a guy who helps a team win.
Sheeeeesh!

wizskins — rudy gay? Luke ridnour? those guys are improvements?
Also, yes you are dreaming. If Chris Bosh is so good, how come the Raptors haven’t done anything? They have one of the best point guards in basketball too.
What makes you think we’d win a battle over Amare Stoudamire or Chris Bosh anyway?
And then there’s your suggestion of Nick Young as a starter. He can’t even earn minutes off the bench. At this point, he is not an NBA player. He can shoot, yes, but that’s it.

The Wizards future depends on 2 things:
1. the return to form of Gilbert Arenas. He has to be as good as he was 2-3 years ago.
2. The development of Andray, Javale and Dominic. (I’ve basically written off Pech and Nick at this point)
I’m assuming Brendan will be fine, btw.
Ernie bet the farm on a high-scoring guard w/ 3 knee injuries. High-scoring guards don’t win you championships, so you have to assume that’s not the goal.

You are right, of course — btw, if you put a space after your smiley, you’ll get the symbol. In other words this
. works, but this
. doesn’t. I’ve been meaning to mention this for months!
As to Nick — you aren’t saying that he has improved are you? It’s pretty obvious he hasn’t. I posted his numbers compared to other 2 guards and they make it pretty obvious. They look even worse when you compare him to 3s, btw.
The big problem is that his style of play doesn’t lend itself to improvement in the areas where he is deficient. He has no catch and shoot game, so in order to score he has to have the ball in his hands, dribble around and test the defender, then find a soft spot and put it up. He shoots well, but that style of play won’t get him anything but shots.
Comment from Tom Mandel

Btw, I would *love* to be wrong about Nick. He is a nice kid and a great story and a supremely gifted athlete. I’m pulling for him.
He has terrific length and quickness, and he *should* be a great defender and shot blocker, but so far he isn’t even close.
Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 2, 2008 at 3:35 PM
First off I will look into the smileys
2nd I think there are areas Nick has gotten better at. He’s shown more determination on defense and that has led to more blocks (you will obviously argue less steals.) but he has decreased his fouls which is a good sign.
He also is working very hard on his catch and shoot skills in practice, maybe it hasnt shown up yet but I think it will.
He’s figured out how to create contact and get to the line more. He’s on pace to triple his FT attempts this year.
Also last year he shot a very high % from behind the arc (40%) this year his numbers are very low (18.2%) yet he is still shooting higher from the field. I dont think his % will stay down for that long and thus his numbers will increase in points and fg%.
Does he have more work to do. Unquestionably. But there are definitely subtle improvements in his game. He needs to continue to keep working, but I would definitely not “write him off” yet.

Tom and SportsWiz, thanks for the resources. Look what I dug up:
Well, looking at the salaries across the league and the players…just about all if not all of the teams seem to be over the cap….if you have 3 big-time players, you’re over.
According to the pay chart: Indiana, Clippers, Minnesota, Okl has pos $, and the wiz have the lowest amount over the cap (wiz are higher than the other four, and look at all five records….) I guess we need to spend more over to have a decent team.

We need some “tude” every now and then
Nick is getting there, but when four people drop back on you, somebody’s open pass the ball……and move his feet on “D”…… and he is not a point, stop dribbling (turnover when dribbling). Other than that, he’s good.
see everyone tonight.

When I interned in college I was told by my employer at the time to not use ESPN.com, for any stats as they were CONSTANTLY wrong.
I walked into the office the next day of the internship looked up some stats on ESPN.com for a story, then referenced about three other places and saw that low and behold ESPN.com was way off.
Hoopshype isnt always right, but they do a lot of salary breakdowns and its much more their expertise than ESPN’s.

i think nick young is a gem. Tom, I can’t believe that you are complaining about the fact that he can create his own shot! This is one of the most sought after talents in the league. period.
he could catch and shoot, but there are no plays in our offense for that.

Here’s another realistic trade idea:
Wiz trade Etan & AD to Indiana for Jamal Tinsley & Jeff Foster.
Wiz get a Starting PG until Gil gets back (and then a solid off the bench) and a better back-up center than ET. Indiana dumps Jamal (they won’t buy him out) and Etan can play back-up PF and C and gets 2 expiring contracts in 2010.
Thoughts?

BUT some wierd stuff happened in the NBA…do i EXPECT us to tradew for STARBURY and his expiring contract NO….
But I also didnt expect Eddie Jordan to unemployed 11 games into the season…..
Also if you ask anyone in the NBA who would they prefer to have
1. Amare
2. Bosh
3. Haywood…..
They would probably tell you in that exact same order…
Just like you dont see much in Nick Young…(I for one think he’s gonna be a GREAT player)…I dont see much in Brendan…YES he had a great season but let’s not get excited…Etans back and we now have McGee…he isnt gonna be seeing the floor as much as he did…which WILL frustrate him AND it was just one great season…lets see what he can do..Can he have consitantly have great season or was it just a fluke?

Sportswiz — when I saw Flip Murray, a marginal 2drounder, jump-shooting, nothing player, eat Nick up on defense — blowing by him to the basket, something Flip doesn’t do very often — I understood that, no, Nick hasn’t yet “got it” on defense. Btw, if he’d defended that possession, we might have won the game.
Yes, his blocks are up, fouls and steals down, and, even more importantly, his turnovers are down. no we don’t really have enough numbers yet this season to come to any definitive conclusion (other than that he didn’t really learn anything over the off season).
It is true that he is better this season than last, btw — it’s just that last season he was utterly horrible (despite what fans think), and so the improvement hasn’t yet made him a good player.
The thing that makes Nick *much* less productive than an average 2 is his lack of assists. For as long as his whole game is dependent on getting the ball and taking at least 6, usually 10-12 dribbles, that won’t change.
Btw, the guy he is most like is DerMarr Johnson, who has the same problem — he is as productive in most everything as most 2 guards, but he doesn’t get any assists. He was a lottery pick, I might add. Most first round picks don’t make it in the league.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 2, 2008 at 6:35 PM
I’ve already posted all the numbers on Nick in a previous blog item. I’ll search for it and link to that post.
Rick, I’m not complaining that Nick can create his own shot. When it comes to shooting, Nick’s numbers are those of an average 2 guard in the league. That’s what they are. He shoots more than an average 2, but his shooting efficiency is average. I assume you don’t think that the numbers lie. Last year, he shot 48%, this year 47%. An average 2 shoots %47.4.
Nick is below average in rebounds and steals; again, numbers don’t lie. But, his big problem is assists. An average 2 guard gets 8.6 steals every 48 minutes; Nick gets 2.6.
You could say, “oh nick is more of a 3.” But, an average 3 gets 7.63 rebounds every 48 minutes; Nick gets 4.2.
See what I mean? Sorry, Nick fans — I’m not a hater, I’m just a basketball junkie w/ an analytical mind and I’m a Wizards fan.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 2, 2008 at 6:38 PM
Nick still has this year and next year to become the best NBA player he can be. W/ rare exceptions, NBA players don’t improve after their 3d year.
Andray has this year to show who he is. He’s in his 4th year, but he lost his 1st year to the shooting incident. He is also about a year younger than Nick believe it or not. He turned 22 in August. Nick turned 23 in June.
Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 2, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Sorry as i stated I hate “writing off” players 80 games into their careers.
Personally I see a lot of the faults you see in Nick’s game but his ball handling has improved this year, his understanding of what is and isnt a good shot has gotten better. Again getting to the line has gotten better.
Defensively he has challenged more shots (hence the more blocks) and created less fouls, to me thats two wins.
Look is he perfect? hardly. Can he get better? no doubt. But I just think you are overly harsh on nick. Just my personal opinion. And I think we can both agree that we hope you are wrong on this one
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 2, 2008 at 6:53 PM
Oooops, I gotta do a little revision on my numbers for nick vs. the average — i was comparing his assist numbers to an average *point* guard. Not fair:
An average 2 guard gets .96 points for every attempt. Nick gets .95 (last year, .96)
An average 2 gets to the line 4.9 times per 48 — Nick gets there 6.5 times (good!). And he shoots .84 vs. an average 2′s .8.
An average 2 gets 5.6 boards per 48; Nick gets 4.2.
Average 2 gets 1.8 steals; Nick gets 1.
Average 2 gets 4.6 assists; Nick gets 2.7.
The last three stats account for all of Nick’s difference from an average 2 guard. An average guy earns a 6.15 win score; Nick has a 3.76 going this year (last year a dismal 1.95; mostly because of all the fouls. He’s average in fouls this year.)
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 2, 2008 at 6:57 PM
SportsWiz — I’m not harsh. I’m just reporting the numbers. Yes, he *definitely* has lots more runway (and for that reason, no I should *not* give up on him). And, yes, even though he’s not there yet, he has improved over last year — when I first looked at the numbers I wasn’t expecting to see that, so I’m happy about it.
He and Andray and JaVale and Dom — they are critical to our future.

Tom, where do you get those averages? The average 2 shoots 47%? That seems high.
I was daydreaming today. Wouldn’t it be nice to be rooting for the Celtics, the Patriots and the Red Sox, rather than the Wiz, the Skins, and the Nationals. Would (almost) make the Boston weather worth it.
Rick, Young is not (so far) a grab and shoot player. If he were, that would fit the system better.
I haven’t given up on Young yet. But I think it’s going to be very difficult for him to change his spots. On the other hand, if he is able to pull it off, he could be a real find. Just like Blatche and McGee. I wonder what % of guys with a lot of potential actually realize it all. Boy if all three of those guys were to blossum we’d be very hard to stop.

SportzWiz you will learn in time that Tom is always right. I am not being sarcastic. Tom, literally is always right. When it comes to the numbers it is hard to dispute what he says as he can always back up every word of what he says.
He is an analytical fan. We are more “team spirit” fans. There is no difference in the passion for the team only in the way things are viewed. I have ALWAYS looked to either Tom or Neal for any of my “numbers” related questions.
Wiz-skins I think Haywood, by being out this year, kinda showed us that he was the guy that not only called the defense but was also it’s anchor. Without him the defense has really struggled this year. I’m sure that both Amare and Bosh would be a significant offensive upgrade I don’t think they would effect our defense the way Haywood does.
Imo Nick has improved his game quite a bit over last year and this year’s summer league. I’m really very happy about his development. His shooting seems a little off so far, but , his turnovers and fouls are down. That was the biggest flaw last year. too many stupid fouls and turnovers. With his atheletcism he can become a great player.
Comment from ChenierFan

It seems like every other night we put Nick under the microscope. Although he is still subject to defensive breakdowns, his all-around game has noticeably improved (fewer turnovers and fouls). Nick isn’t even a starter. I hope this guy is a Wizard for a long time. Hopefully he will get his 3-point shot going. Then he will be even tougher to guard and will open up the floor even more for the other players.

Rick, re. Nick hanging head after a mistake or bad play, if you notice Dom and Andray do that a lot also. In fact Dom looks down a lot, evey if he did not make a mistake. They need to learn to keep their heads up high even after errors, and to keep playing even harder. Keep your eyes up, you might see what’s going on in the court!

Comment from NickDaGiFt
Time December 2, 2008 at 8:56 PM
i like how in the first game after tapsott was hire, how the team ran the offense threw blatche from the high post. he has a average mid range jumper, is a good passer imo, and has alot of offensive moves which allows him to get to the line. and he can play 4 positons(point forward is 4th).
dee brown sucks….
does not help stevenson and anyway because he dont penetrate and he cant shoot. imo stevenson is only a effective starter starting alongside a player who can penetrate and shoot, because he can not create his own shot, but is good like bowen with the open threes, and he play defense

Now that was entertainment!
Every Wizard played well. I can’t even complain about AD. That being said, if DBrown can continue to play at the level of his game tonight, we may have found a good point guard.
Our shooting was great obviously because we put the ball in the basket; but we passed the ball to get the open shot which makes putting the ball in the basket a lot easier.
Loved the offense (minus a few dribble-handoffs); loved the defense. GREAT JOB WIZ. Hope CB’s knee is okay.
Let’s keep the pressure on Portland tomorrow. We’re on the move. Terrible jacket Gil. Go Wiz!

Hope you feel better Wizards4Life. Very cool Uni’s Reuben! I like those a lot.
Funny… Reuben- SportzWiz do you know exactly when the uni’s will be worn? SportzWiz – yes
That was a fun game to watch. Everyone that played contributed. McGuire picked up a lot of fouls, but, I don’t think the opposing player hit any of the shots for an and one when Dom fouled them. A couple turned out very well as the free throw shooter only made one of two. How about Dee and Deshawn from 3? That was Sweet. Darius is turning into a Mr. Everything. That guy really hustles. Nick “got in the way” pretty well on defense.
We kept one of the best scoring offenses to under 100 points. Not bad guys. We have another one coming up tomorrow night. If we play like we did tonight I have no doubt we can win that one too.

Getabigboyoffense I think that was the best game Antonio has played so far this year. He was actually driving the lane tonight. He is a much better player when he attacks. Those old bones are probably getting tired of hitting the floor though lol. Dee’s game was spot on tonight. If that is the kind of passing and movement we can expect from him in the future WooHoo. I agree with Gbkdc. I hope Slwiz saw, heard, envisioned the game somehow LOL.

Aundra that is an Absolute First! I have Never known you to be anything but positive. EVER. I can’t believe you didn’t like the game just a little
(I know you are using reverse psychology so it’s ok lol). We will get through the rough spell. We have so very many times before over the years. Just a minor speed bump on our way to a championship

GrifonRacing, you are right on it.
If we put the ball in the basket on the open looks everything else falls into place. The Nets are a VERY good team. They were on a roll and we ate their lunch on their court. Love it! We just have to maintain the intensity.
Slick Nick is a scoring machine (ppm must be high). He is copying all of Gil’s outside moves, but he doesn’t have Gil’s strength when he goes to the hole. He’ll get there.
McGuire is our Rodman. He just makes positive things happen on the boards. McGee altered shots and kept the ball alive off the boards so that other Wizards could get the rebound. AB is slowly becoming a solid offensive player…he just needs to get under control when he goes to the hole with the ball. AB, the man with the ball on a fast break (if it is not a breakaway) slows down at the foul line and allows his teammates to fill the lanes for layups. Don’t run over people; get it under control.
Our All-stars continue to perform as All-stars. AJ and CB were terrific. Big baskets time after time.
DS was absolutely great tonight. I’m very happy for him. I am sure that he has been tough on himself because of his lack of scoring so far this season. He had a BIG TIME game that was a crucial factor in our win.
Go Wiz!!!

BLATCHE HAS GOT TO BE THE WILDEST OF WILD CARDS I HAVE EVER SEEN. I MEAN 25POINTS 12 REBOUNDS 5 BLOCKS ONE GREAT NIGHT AND ZERO THE NEXT. HE MUST HAVE SPLIT PERSONALTIES OR SOMETHING BECAUSE IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE! IF HE LETS HIS WARRIOR KING PERSONALITY SIDE OUT ONCE A WEEK I WOULD BE HAPPY BUT THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN BECAUSE HE LIKES TO STAY BELOW THE RADAR! I GUESS WE HAVE TO ONLY DREAM AND WATCH THE SWEET LITTLE ANDRAY SIDE 99 % OF THE TIME!
OH WELL!!!!!!

That’s Andray’s biggest problem… he gets the Curly Neal syndrome. He needs to start playing like a 7′ player and less like a 6′ player. Too many abilities in that long lanky frame to keep under control all at once.
I like that just having JaVale in the middle changes shots. He really doesn’t have to do anything. Just his presence makes guys move, alter, change.

Way to go Deshawn! If you go straight up on your jumper, the shot goes down. No fading away.
I thought that charging call on Andray was garbage, as was the blocking call against him. The refs were guessing and guessed wrong.
We need two good games in a row from Dee and Deshawn if we are going to beat Portland
At 3-12, its a long climb, but we have plenty of games to go.

I really want to thank gbkdc and GrifonRacing for thinking of me when Dee made good plays!!! I’m really excited for him, but more importantly the TEAM had a good win; sounds like better backcourt play, rebounds was really close; TO’s were lower, and very good assists especially the first half.
I’d just written to Luther that the Illini where 75% on their field goal percentage with assists for the season so far; so maybe there was some good vibes sent out, LOL!! The Illini had a tough lose to Clemson by 2 points but it was thrilling. Sorry I missed this good one but hopefully the good things will carry over tomorrow against Portland. I know several of the guys need consistancy; Dee, JaVale, Nick, Andray and if DeShawn can keep up his three’s (timely, not just settling) and CB3 and Antawn have their veterern plays going; well, it’s just nice!!
dj/SportzWiz you know I’ll be lookin’ for the “good stuff” so hope it can get posted. Us Team Spirit and Analytical fans will be a watchin’

What a great game to watch and win — our first on the road, and our first against an Eastern rival.
neal — the average figures come from Dave Berri’s “Wages of Wins” blog. I’ve collected them from various posts he’s done. i have a meeting in a few minutes, but later today I’ll find and post the sources.
grifon — I’m a “team spirit” fan *and* an analytical fan!
Another way to say it is that I am a wannabe GM !!
I have a story to tell about trying to get an NBA job 27 years ago — more on that later today as well.
