Game Day Warriors
6:24 AM…Dave Johnson checking in….it’s been a tough 48 hours….heck it’s been a tough season….it was a good training camp….in fact Eddie Jordan at the time called it one of the best.. that was before the extent of Brendan Haywood’s injury was known…I thought it would be tough because the truth is there was nothing easy about last year….in my view in nine of 11 games the Wizards had a chance with the exceptions being the road games in Orlando and Miami…And now the team has to move on with a good guy Ed Tapscott in charge with another good guy in Eddie Jordan out….Jordan is first class….I can vividly remember his emotion at his introductory press conference in the summer of 2003 when he talked about the influence John Paul Davis Jr. , his coach at the District’s Douglass Junior High, had on him ..sure Jordan’s passion was basketball coaching but his family came first and that certainly came across….same for Mike O’Koren who was also let go…just first class….and for all the talks about basketball I enjoyed even more the talks about family and life….yep just is not fun and certainly not for team President Ernie Grunfeld who had to make the call…and in the end deliver the ultimate message..So tonight the Wizards will try to start something…better defense is a priority and it will have to be against the high scoring Golden State Warriors…..BLOGCAST–connect court sideas we do the radio —starts at 7:00….it is 980 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia ….92.7 FM in Southern Maryland and 1370 AM in Baltimore and of course online there will be a listen LIVE link posted at the top of the page….And again thanks for your support and passionate interest in Wizards basketball.
6:34 PM Dave Johnson checking in from the Verizon Center..Just watched Gilbert Arenas warming up and I am not looking to give false hope and it was only warming up…but he looked great …just wanted to pass that on…starters are in …Warriors will start Jamal Crawford with Anthony Morrow in the back court…Corey Maggette and Stephen Jackson are the forwards and Andris Biedrins is the center and he is good….Wizards will go with the same starting five Dee Brown and DeShawn Stevenson in the back court Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison are the forwards and JaVale McGee the center…Ed Tapscott talks all about it on the radio beginning at 7

great vid. really shows how great of person dee is.
its tough seeing eddie go. i was a wizards fan way before he came in and im only a young guy. so i guess i just got attached to eddie since he restored our team and you can see it through the players and how they see they loved eddie. im pretty sure its hard for them too.
but we gotta move on and im focused on tonights game. lets go wiards!

Agreed — it’s necessary to move on.
I am hoping that for the rest of the season we see *a lot* of Dominic, Andray and Nick. We need to know if those guys can play, and they need minutes to develop — if they can.
In a way, even after AD comes back, I hope we see a lot of Dee. He is another guy who we have to figure out if he is in our future or just a stopgap. Shooting is his only real problem so far.
I can’t imagine us making the playoffs this year; we’ve got too many losses to make up for, and the East is improved. If I’m right about that, we might as well learn the strengths and weaknesses of our young guys.
(…and put ourselves in a position to pick Stephon Curry in the ’09 draft — he is going to be an nba star!!)

Not that there’s anything seriously wrong with the Wiz line-up, but I think that this could work too:
SG/PG: Gil
SG: Nickerbocker (NY); Juan
PG: Caronimo (I REALLY think he can, despite what some may say); AD; Dee
SF: D-Steve; D-Song; D-Mac (not just because of their names either)
PF: Tawn; AB; Pech
C: BH; McGee; ET
*Other than that, feeling REAL positive about this game tonight!
GO WIZARDS (prove all the ‘nay-sayers’ and haters wrong)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

aznzero,
Well thats is some great stuff that Tapscott preaches, defense is what we need, rebounding is what we need, and push the ball is what we need, we NEED to take advantage of our athletic Center in JaVale….
I still am wondering what the line-up will be for tonight…hopefully, JaVale is still starting…I would like to see him play a 35 min game tonight to see how he does..

wiz-skins, thanks for the reminder. All of these years I thought Wes Unseld Sr. was signing all of those players after their prime….lol…. Well, the last couple of years have been good to us as fans. There has been exciting basketball with strickland, Weber, a few months with Rasheed…. and now Gil, AJ, Caron….but we’ve always been missing that one ingredient (no need to go back to the Big E days). Truthfully, even with the three all-stars, we still didn’t have that in-side presence to lift us over the top. I feel for anyone in this business that becomes injured, fired, etc. As Coach Zorn stated “Harsh Reality”. In the end, every coach gets fired. Really, it’s the only thing a GM can do. Ernie picked the players, so you expect him to think we have a good roster, right?

tonight will be fun.
i would like to believe that we do have a good roster. the only mistake i think EG has made was with Songaila. The Arenas gamble has yet to be proved out one way or another.
otherwise he has done very well with the picks we’ve had (no high first rounders) and he brought in Jamison, Arenas and Butler.
i believe the only question right now is this: can a different coach get these players to play defense. and that includes veterans like jamison and songaila. if not, then i will agree with you Tom, this team is not well constructed if they wont defend together.

That was a good article Wiz-Skins. Being a life long Bullets/Wizards fan, I have been saying what David Faulk said for the longest. It starts at the very top and Abe has to realize this aint 1978! Things have changed. We will never win a championship with his as the owner. I know it seems a lil harsh but that’s just how I feel. You see how much more the Caps are rejuvinated. Even though the Reskins struggled and everybody hated Dan Snyder for a while, and some still do, he made football exciting every year with signings, etc. Some were questionable but he made moves. Abe is stingy with his money but will spend it on a broke down Gil. It’s crazy. He won’t go over that luxury tax because he wants money back but we do nothing with it. It hurts to see his health fade like it has been doing over the years, and he’s a great person. i’ve met him several times but he keeps saying he wants one more championship before he leaves this earth. Well Abe, it’s time to bust a move & spend some money so we can win a championship, you can enjoy the championship and you can go out with a bang!

research and statistics don’t always add up to squat. For ya’ll numbers crunchers who believe coaches have nothing to do with wins and losses get off of it.If it was only players then y won’t this team play defense.Defense leads to a better chance at wins.Teams need development and motivation, and guidance in some instances.Sure they get alot of this from within and each other, but when the atmosphere that they practice ,play and interact in professionally sets a certain tone which is set by the organization it makes for a better chance at a winning attitude and success at work which is on the court.
I believe alot of the fans on this blog have the same problem that EJ had. They don’t see the gems that are on this active roster without Haywood and Gil. This isn’t a lottery team at all.I do believe that signing a injured player to a max contract was a mistake (GM mistake).Money that could have been better spent. You all should hope that Gil won’t play without Eddie.Hope he gives up the contract and walk out lol. And as for Jamison being heated/Who cares.he doesn’t wanna play on defense, and knows that alot of what the team has been getting away with won’t be tolerated now.D UP.Accountability and organization is what this team needs…whether Eddie T can make that worm turn is yet to be seen.

the two highest salaried teams in the NBA are the new york knicks and the Dallas Mavericks, I doubt either one wins a championship this year.
Reallize the Wizards are over the salary cap, had they not signed Gilbert, they would not be allowed to go over the salary cap to sign a free agent unless it was for MLE.
I know a lot of people wanted James Posey this off-season again that would have cost the Wizards close to 14 million dollars a year for a role playing small forward.

I know everybody is playin the fantasy basketball game right now and setting up different scenerios but maybe we should build through the draft. Sure, it won’t give us instant success but we can build a dynasty through our draft picks and then pluck vets off the FA list like the spurs did. Like i’ve stated before, I hope we can get Blake Griffin. I know Tom, you want Steph Curry (who is a beast I might add) but if i had the choice to pick between the two and i’m on the clock, i’m takin the beast that plays on the block. Jamison is gettin up in age and Griffin can learn how to be a pro from him while being the one who takes the reigns from Jamison when he’s done just like McGee will do with Brendan in the future. To have a squad that looks like:
PG – Arenas
SG – Young (?) or maybe Curry if we trade players for picks
SF – Butler
PF – Griffin
C – McGee
is alright with me. Or maybe Ernie can find a late first or second round Gem to turn out like Tony Parker, Michael Redd or Manu Ginobili. Only time will tell but until then tha Wiz are my boyz and i’m stickin with em, no matter what. Let’s get a win tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My thanks to Neal and Tom for answering my questions. About the lottery is a playoff berth entirely based on wins/losses?
I know for the Big Ten you could lose the Big Ten conference and yet play well in the Big Ten Championship and get a berth in the NCAA tourney.
What does the phrase lottery team mean? Is this where getting a better spot for being the worst in the league comes into play and getting a better draw for a draft pick?

I don’t know that Tapscott is any better than Jordan, but EG had to do something to shake things up and try to get a more optimistic mood going.
If Tapscott can get the Wiz to play with enthusiasm he will have pulled off a near miracle after Jordan trying for so long. Does anyone know what Tapscott’s personality is like? Is he another “player’s coach”? Is he a disciplinarian? A hard ass? I remember now how he took American U. from nowhere to a damn good team with not much to work with. They were the George Mason of their time.

I feel you SportzWiz. I’m not saying to spend money just to spend it. I want them to spend it wisely. I did not want them to go after Jame Posey at all. But i know on thing, when 2010 comes around, even 2009 and there are huge top tier free agents out there, i don’t want to hear nothing about no luxury tax. Now i know we won’t get a LeBron James but they have to do a better job of selling our product to these players. This is DC! This aint Utah (sorry if i offended anyone from Utah). This is a major city with major stuff to do, with beautiful women who come in all flavors, etc. Who wouldn’t want to play here!? I can just see it now, the wizards will not be players in the 2010 sweepstakes because they don’t want to go over the luxury tax. Please!!! That’s all i’m sayin. If the opportunity presents itself, bust a move! LOL.
Comment from SportzWiz
Time November 25, 2008 at 6:38 PM
The luxury tax is a tricky thing, at no point has this team said they wouldnt go over, in fact Ernie Grunfeld said he would, the key is it needs to be the right player and the team needs to believe he will be a very big difference maker. Last off-season I don’t think there was anybody that fit that mold.
Slwiz to answer your question. The top 8 teams in the east and west make the playoffs if the 9th team in the West has a better record then the 8th team in the east it doesnt matter.
The other 14 teams go into the lottery. Based on how bad your record is you have a certain % as to what pick you will receive. Only the top 3 picks are chosen by the lottery the following 4-14 are based on record.
So if you have the worst record you have the best chance to get the first pick. If you dont get chosen in the lottery’s top 3 you automatically get the 4th pick.
Picks 15-30 are based on playoff order and finish.

I’ll try and catch the audio from ET but looking up the info on Crawford, Jackson, Maggette, and Biedrins they are all double figures in points and Crawford is HOT with 3 pointers. Not too big, i think 6-10 or so is the tallest but that don’t mean squat if they try to front McGee like Yao did!!
I hope Dee and JaVale have a better start. They seemed sluggish so hopefully the 5 can get it in gear and stop the selfish one on one and get some ball movement going. And of course the D. My gosh, was it that bad for several years!!! Go Wiz! Be better and have some fun tonight!!!

Let’s see if we get some responses here:
The demise of this team can be placed all over this organization. Here are my list of problems from players to personnel:
1) Olesky Petcherov – He’s not Dirk (except in practice). He’s not a banger. He’s useless. The original need for a
7footer was to counter Shaq. The need is over get back to the 6?11 basics.
2) You let go of Demarr Johnson who was very consistent in the pre-season and keep Dee Brown who can run a 4.4 to the cup but has no finishing moves.
3) We don’t have a consistent enough core group to run the princeton offense. Have you seen as many back door cuts recently? Not like when Ed 1st started.
4) You give 111mil to an injured player. I don’t care if it’s Mike, Magic, or Byrd. You don’t give that to a player that hasn’t proven themselves after an initial surgery.
5) You let go of one of our more consistent 3pt shooters in R. Mason Jr. Just plain stupid.
These are just 5 reasons why there is very little success here. Bone headed Mgmt and coaching moves.
And if I don’t have at least 3 people agree with me on here, then I will eat my hat. Now let’s talk some real talk. Holla back wiz nation.

We have no need for 4 seven footers in Brendan, Petch, J.V. and Andray. I think some negativity is necessary. If the truth is told and acted upon we would not be where we are now. Altho this intensity is off the chain at the moment…Then again the problems not in the 1st….it’s in the 4th.

GREAT HALF!
Finally a rotation that makes sense. I would have liked to see Dixon remain on the bench, but still, liked the significant use of the big lineup. We are out-rebounding them 29-18.
They did miss a few open shots, but the defense still looks much more aggressive tonight than in any other game this season.
Love the play of Blatche and McGee. They even have combined for 5 assists. McGee did pick up 3 fouls, but he needs to stay aggressive.

I’m noticing a different defensive philosophy – less reflexive double teaming that used to lead to futile scrambling and open shots for the other side. More straightup man-to man with a shot blocker always in the game.
McGuire has a bit of Rodman in him. With experience he could become a terrific defender. He already has the rebounding down.
Comment from jdmek9tec

I do wish the best for Eddie J. I hated the way he was let go; a phone call on the day he and his wife were giving to the community. But his leaving is best for the team becasue these changes are already evident. This is a team win; Jamison and CB3 had their points but the change to the rookies to start helped; Dee and JavAle got it going; AB was tremendous tonight; assists and not settling for outside jumpers helped; better D and the bench did there jobs, too. Keep going Wiz; keep going!!!

I knew that I was feelin’ positive about the game for a reason! WHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
And it ain’t that Blatche might have taken his vitamins or ate Wheaties like people were saying. I know that it’s just jokes, but I’ve always believed in this guy and said (and still thinks) that he’s gonna blow-up (cause he ain’t done people – whoooo!). He just played, so everyone who once doubted him just needs to swallow their pride and live with this kid being in a Wiz uniform!! Dominic was GREAT – - everyone was GREAT!!!! Wow. What an effort. Caron and Andray were just unstoppable. Jamison played terrific as well.
We got 30 minutes out of Andray tonight, and he did *not* look winded or out of condition. Can he do it two games in a row. Not can he put up those kind of numbers 2 games in a row, but can he give us those kind of minutes and be solid night in and night out. If so, that really changes the team.
Nick played well tonight — and what I specially liked was that he contributed in other ways than scoring. He shot well, 4-7, but he also rebounded and only had one foul and one turnover to match one block and one steal. Very nice.
Dee had a terrific game as well. Everyone played well with the exception of Juan who never got untracked and only played 9 minutes. DeShawn couldn’t hit a shot but he did everything else extremely well.
Wizards fans are *happy* tonight.

Congratulations to Ed Tapscott on his FIRST NBA victory…may there be many more.
Observations:
AB did not look like a player who was afraid to make a mistake and he was TERRIFIC!
AB, CB and AJ contributed to balanced scoring/rebounding. AB can be a force when he has confidence.
AB and JM in the game at the same time present difficulty, both offensively and defensively, to the opponent
JM’s enthusiasm and athleticism have all of the makings of an all-star…he just needs to bulk-up and get the playing time. The game is more fun to watch when he is in the lineup.
Slick Nick and DM played their roles to the “T”. Spot scoring and great rebounding and defense.
ET got “0″ minutes and Petch was at the scorer’s table to check in in Q4 making ET appropriately last off the bench
AD was inactive and didn’t slow us down.
DB played his best game. Real point guard with SPEED!
The Princeton offense was not apparent…didn’t see one intentional dribble handoff.
DS had his best game of the year since he didn’t have to carry any offensive burden. Great team player!
Loved the fact that both CB and AJ were willing to give the ball up to non-vets, and were still great producers themselves.
Darius was finally was inserted at the 4 position and was able to contribute positively.
JD was a steady influence (except for one sequence). He can see the entire floor; score; and play defense. Given the opportunity, he is an NBA starter.
Petch’s congratulations of Eddie T at the end of the game showed class and togetherness
Players appeared to actually be enjoying themselves.
The game was fun to watch…moreso since we won
Result WIZ (1-10 now 2-10) by WAY MORE THAN ENOUGH against a 5-9 (now5-10) team
Some of the bloggers might be justified to feel vindicated.
Can’t wait for the Magic…the Wiz performance (win or lose) will tell the tale about the remainder of the season.
If we beat the Magic, I’ll bet the Gil gets better faster!!!

Are those actually positive comments from getabigboy!!! Welcome to the blog!!! LOL (I know, I know you’ve been here all along just frustrated with Eddie and the losses!!)
I was asking earlier about the playoff and lottery. So in the east is 15 teams; 5 each in ATLANTIC, SOUTHEAST (that’s us), and CENTRAL.
and in the west is 15 teams; 5 each in SOUTHWEST, NORTHWEST, and PACIFIC.
So if 8 teams of the 15 get in the playoffs; I’m assuming the 9th is a wildcard? then if we keep playing and some of the other teams drop off or beat each other we start to move up some. Maybe I’m thinking too far ahead but for now I’d rather focus on this year; this team, rather then on trades; salary cap, etc; mainly because I don’t have enough knowledge. I’m just a poor fan trying to hoop and holler for my team and “our boy”!! It’s nice to win for a change! Go Wiz!!! Beat Orlando!!!

I heard an interesting little sports tidbit today while in one of my classes:
A sports athlete who previously had a head of hair (or any facial hair), the media believed that if the particular athlete cut/shaved his or her hair, then it would bring a curse on the team for however long. An example is Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. He’s bald, and look how bad he’s played this year. First he didn’t even know that there was such thing as a tie in the NFL, and secondly he got benched in a 10-7 game after halftime against the Ravens in Week 12. Other players who had dreadlocks in college and then cut them off once they got to the NFL also started having subpar careers, such as Pacman Jones.
Considering this, wouldn’t one think that DeShawn Stevenson shaving his beard entirely off from last season could be a hex put upon us this season? Just food for thought.
Comment from M2

Yeah getabigboy is trippin’… Some decent observations bigboy but you mixed it in with a little weed smoking as well…
Ex:
“DS had his best game of the year since he didn’t have to carry any offensive burden. Great team player!”
Who in the he77 are you talking about? DSS’s goose egg on 0-7 shooting? I mean, I guess he passed the ball to some guys that actually made shots tonight so he got a few assists..
&:
“Darius was finally was inserted at the 4 position and was able to contribute positively.”
“JD was a steady influence (except for one sequence). He can see the entire floor; score; and play defense. Given the opportunity, he is an NBA starter.”
Really? D Song pulls a 1-6 shooting & grabs a few boards? I won’t even go into Juan being an NBA starter, I love him but that’s just funny…
I could obviously go on… But I love what you bring to the blog.
Go getabigboy!
They got a big win on an emotional night at home vs a bad team… That’s all so far. But I’m optimistic… Always have been!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 26, 2008 at 9:02 AM
Actually, he is right about DeShawn — yes, he missed his shots, but in every other way he played very good ball.
Songaila also shot poorly, but again the rest of his line was terrific.
Not Juan, however — and I don’t think he is a productive NBA player. Still, I’m not dinging him on last night’s 9 minutes!!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 26, 2008 at 9:05 AM
As to the shooting — we had 4 guys combine to go 3 – 22, and we *still* shot over 50%. The rest of the team went 50 – 83, if you can believe that!
Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 26, 2008 at 10:30 AM
lol….I had to go to the roster to see who JD was….LOL…
JD has a shooter’s mentality PERIOD. Sometimes I don’t understand him….it is what it is.
I’m just happy for the productive output by everyone last night…..it made for great blogging and a healthy outlook.
As far as the playoffs (which are far into the future), we are only three losses out of eight in the loss column and five out in the win column. AND we still have played fewer games than most of the teams…..in the words of Bill Maher….”NEW RULE”
