Game Day New York
7:36 AM Dave Johnson checking in…team flew up to New York last night. I am about to catch a train with my 9-year old son—if we win I will take him on the road the rest of the season….Knicks making deals for the future yesterday…the Wizards just worried about the present ..Can not fault the effort but Tracy McGrady 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter…Somehow the Wizards have to find a way to close games and get some confidence back. I know JaVale McGee had challenges with Yao Ming but he didn’t back down and played a role in the success the Wizards did have last night and it was probably DeShawn Stevenson’s best game of the season….Anyway looking forward to tonight..I will check in from New York. and don’t forget BLOGCAST–connect court side as we blab away on the radio—starts at 7:30….it is 980 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia ….92.7 FM in Southern Maryland and 1370 AM in Baltimore and of course online there will be a listen LIVE link posted at the top of the page.
9:55 AM Dav Johnson on the Acela just like we talk about on the radio…economy is fine…train is packed
6:55 PM Dave Johnson checking in from MSG starters are in…once again Wizards will go with Dee Brown, DeShawn Stevenson, JaVale McGee, Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler……Knicks will go with Chris Duhon, Nate Robinson, David Lee, Quentin Richardson, and Wilson Chandler….Al Harrington, Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas will not dress

aznzero enjoyed your equation!
I’d like to see that he keeps starting Dee and JaVale as long as the good start is a part of their doing!!
I hope the assists to field goals will continue. The better defensive rebounding should help with fast break points. And the better rebounding on offensive boards should help the second chance points.

Its “The Big Secrets” first game at MSG, i guess thats kinda exciting, maybe he’ll slam a sick one on david lee or something. Nick Young needs to step up and hit his shots, andray has to keep the same intensity and focus as yesterday.
AND please do not let off just because they are shorthanded, everyone needs to play like its a playoff game!

Blatche looked good last night. I know we lost, but there were a lot of positives in the game anyway. It is just FUN to watch McGee play!!! And obviously Caron & Antawn are always top-notch in my book.
GO WIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure if I will be here tonight or if I’m going to a birthday party.

i think this is the time where we need to kick it into urgency mode. i honestly thought we had that game last night until mcgrady caught fire. last night’s score wasn’t indicative of how we played, we played outstanding for 3 1/2 quarters, until t-mac hit like 5 threes. but that’s last night, onto tonight:
knicks will be shorthanded tonight, we need to take advantage of it, because this is a game we have to have, in order to save our season for now with Golden State and Orlando coming in next week. I’ll see you folks tonight!!!

The only things that concern me with the team is the obvious need of a true point guard, and a two guard who will garner attention from defenses nightly.i think Nick is gonna be fabulous, but it would be great to have a solid 2 guard in the mix with him.Deshawn, although he tries, isn’t a starter.
I love jamison, and i don’t think to trade him or caron is the move to make. The mistake was made on keeping Arenas at anything more than 50 mil. Most teams have trouble boasting of two all-star,yeah 3 was cool, but 3 all stars don’t mean playoff advancement particularly. And I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t need a scorer’s mentality from the pg position.Be a facilitator with the threat to score.
I think the wiz are a classic case of a loser hitting the motherload overnight. The organization isn’t handling success well. They got stuck on the Big Three concept and got stuck on viewing Gil as the savior when really they were closer to salvation without him.
As of the end of last year’s playoffs they were a true pg and sg and vet big man away from being probably a threat in the east.Without Arenas too.If Jamison had a Zach Randolph type or other reliable veteran 4 in front of him to free him up to move to the 3 at times the wiz would be too much.A move to the 2 would be a good fit for caron backed by young.Blatche could play at the 3 with mcguire, and we wouldn’t have to see pech not getting minutes because between he and Darius and Mcgee and Etan you can cover the 5 spot and that way eveyone plays. Which is why I’ve been against the one trick pony getting a max contract. It was wasteful and a bad move altogether.
Lets not be so enamored by personality then we are about seeing this team bring home a winner for years to come.

Glad not to have to play Z-bo. His jumpshot ability spreads the floor and allows slashing attacks from their perimeter players and undersized rebounders…

Outside gunners drool at the idea of playing the Wiz nowadays. We really need a perimeter D specialist who can stay in front of his man and pressure the ball, challenge shots. If you slow them up a little bit it helps your other players stay in position.

I think what EJ is trying to get Andray and Nick to see is the mental picture of what they need to do when on the floor. Last night great offensive effort from Andray yet he keeps making those foolish fouls which makes him less effective for us when we really need him in the game.
Nick has to learn to see the whole floor and play some good d. Dee needs to hit some outside shots to keep things interesting in the Princeton O.

We actually playing a team that started 2 point guards, 2 small fowards and 1 power forward. We have to win our second game tonight. The Knicks are actually using 3 point guards. Deshawn and Nick should e taking advantage of what is suppose to e a mismatch.
I hope AJ get’s 40 something tonight so we can pull this game out tonight. AJ is playing his heart out and Caron is picking up his play.

16 threes we gave up tonight. Haywood not playing really shows us how much he improved his game last year. Even with Gil not in the lineup we turned it around after losing 5 in a row and won 5 in a row. This team has no true chemistry on offense or defense. It is like they are still playing in the summer league only with the starters now.
The talent of the college players in the draft this year can’t help us that much. The only guy who could help arring trade or FA signing is the Jennings kid playing in Europe. The Griffin kid from Oklahoma would fit good next to McGee.

If NY is having a garage sale maybe they’ll deal Nate Robinson to us?
We need guards guys… simple as that. Brown, Stevenson, Daniels (when he’s healthy), Young, Dixon… I mean c’mon, 4 of those guys wouldn’t be in most NBA rotations let alone start. Dixon didn’t make Detroits play off roster last season. Brown wasn’t in the league. AD is 33 & should be getting like 12 mins a night while the team rests its studs (like he was doing 2 seasons ago with us). Stevenson is a joke, no way would he be a starting two on ANY other team. etc etc etc..
We need guards. It all starts at the guard position!
Blame Eddie all you want, we need guards.
Did I mention we need guards?

I blame eddie for not working with what we have. Nick Young is a good guard and i think he shud start over stevenson. Nick Young is averaging 14+ points. Having him start off the game wud be so much better for us.

Oh yeah, it would not matter anyway….EJ is a veteran man, it was hard enough to get him to start McGee…
Caron and AJ are the only two vets that should always start, and AJ really doesn’t do that good on D (Just my opinion). We really have a good squad, the choices on who goes in and out are really hurting us….There are sooooooo many variables, where do you start, BUT we HAVE to start some where. Maybe this is the season we really don’t get it together….if so, whomever we draft needs to NOT be a project and be someone that can step in

Honestly, I don’t know where to begin.
First of all, congratulations EJ for coaching a team that ties a 40+ year old record for worst start in Wizards/Bullets history. Many others have tried (including you last year), but ONLY YOU have succeeded. Next loss breaks the record!
I have a few comments/questions:
Did everyone/anyone notice that we were playing 12 against 7?
Did everyone/anyone notice that we made no perceptible coaching adjustment to try to stop Richardson’s 3 point shooting?
Did everyone/anyone appreciate the fact the we went from +10 to -5 with ET in the game, and NEVER recovered?
Did everyone/anyone notice that we tried to be good sports and limit the minutes for our good (McGee and Blatche) big players because the Nick’s were short-handed and small. EJ is odds-on favorite to win the “Good Opposing Coach-of-the-Year Award” that is handed out each year by the New York sportewriters Association.
Did everyone/anyone notice that, once again, we ignored intentionally fouling a team in an effort to convert on a potential miss with a few minutes left in the game…We waited until there were too few seconds to matter.
I can not remember any game that the Wizards won because of EJ’s coaching; but they certainly have lost many because of it. The Wizards only win dispite him.
Ernie, are you AWARE? AWAKE? ALIVE? WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR. Get a new coach (but, for God’s sake, not P.J.)
Go WIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this what rock bottom looks like? I hope so. Losing to 7 players, who aren’t even the key players looks awfully bad.
Eddie still has no trust in his bigs. He doesn’t realize that their small team beats our small team because our guard play is so poor(except for Nick). Q-Rich only plays well against the Wiz. Funny how that works out.
I guess we should have seen this coming with the way the Wiz got beat up in the preseason. But this is ridiculous.
I’m sure Eddie will have something new to try. Might I suggest G0 BIG, EDDIE, Go BIG. At this point you have nothing to lose.

Hey ChenierFan,

Hmmmmmmm, come to think of it. GILBERT won a lot of games by using his skills, not coaching. AD is a good floor general, which made us good last year. Soooooooo I say that to say, NOW is the time for Eddie to show that HE can coach, and it shows by what the players do on the floor (or don’t do for that matter). ALSO, if we are not running an efficient offense, CB3 and AJ HAVE to get in these players a la Kobe and demand proficiency. This blame goes all around. I’m done for the night, time to do something else.

I’ve been an Edddie Jordan supporter but, It seems like he has no idea of who or when to make substatutions. His rotations are inconsistant and just don’t make sence, you never know who your gonna see from night to night. A player could have a good game one night but the next night he may not see much time at all. The only way the Wiz are going to be able to win some games with the squad they have now is for Eddie to get a shorter more consistant rotation.
With that being said this team doesn’t have enough shooters! I would love to have Jamal Crawford or someone like that who you wouldn’t have to trade one of your all-stars or rebuild the team to get. Gil, Crawford, Caron, and Jamison would be my core guys everyone else would be considered tradable.

i was at the game tonight, and aside from antawn, none of the wizards played with any intensity or urgency. including Butler, who seemed to be going through the motions for much of the game. caron must have let Q-Rich shoot 8 open 3′s. Losing as much as we are, you gotta look at the positives — so I’m w/ Bridgey.
Dee played very solid basketball except for not making shots. He is usually open when he shoots, too (I guess I’d leave him open too!)
If he can shoot a little better, he can be a good NBA player.
Dominic had a great game. People say, “oh he has no offense” but we outscored the Knicks by 13 points while he was on the floor. That ought to tell you something. He needs to be playing 20 minutes a night. I’ve been one of the defenders of Eddie, but I do feel critical of him for leaving McGuire on the bench for several games in a row.
JaVale — he looks lost on defense a lot of the time, but I don’t care; I smile every time I see him on the floor.
Nick had a good game as a scorer, turning 10 shot attempts and 5 FT attempts into 17 points. He also grabbed 4 boards and chipped in with 2 assists. If I hadn’t been watching him on defense, where he did *not* play well, I’d be happier with his game. Still, a good one.
Andray had an excellent 10 minute stint, despite one stupid turnover. If he could play like that every night, we’d win some games.
Antawn was huge. He is rounding into form.

failure is to stop struggling or stop fighting back
“We still have confidence that we can go out and win a game,” Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. “So even though we’ve lost and we’re 1-10, we don’t have losing habits and that’s a good thing.”
“As long as we continue to work hard and continue to believe that we can turn things around, it makes my job easy,” said Jamison, the Wizards’ captain. “When guys stop playing hard and giving their all is when it becomes difficult for me, but this is a learning curve.”

Well..just read my/the first comment on this blog entry…dude. 16 threes? u gotta be —- me.
And seriously, the first month was against “easy” opponents. (yeah the wiz are “better against good teams”, but oh well..)

Yep, Phemy, you are right. And even I have been complaining about threes forever, it seems. And I know very little about basketball, really. I am no expert, but it is so darn obvious. And it also seems like it would have been a good idea to play a bigger lineup, but what do I know.
Anyway, it is very sad to see them lose so much. I keep thinking, they are not this bad, I just know they aren’t, but wins are wins, and losses are losses. You really can’t argue with the final score, when all is said and done.
It is good to read that Dominic had a good game. I would really like to see more of him, and play him with some of our offensive threats. No one can play defense anyway, so why not??? Didn’t he have 9 boards in 8 min. or something incredible like that?
I wonder what will happen to Eddie Jordan.

Sorry I haven’t been very active. I’ve been watching all the games though. As much as losing isn’t cool I’ve enjoyed watching the past few games. For 3.5 quarters they’re playing pretty standard Wizards ball. As some others have said they aren’t closing.
If I really thought they weren’t trying I wouldn’t be as optimistic. I’ll keep watching cause it’s fun. Let’s go Wiz, let’s go fans!

songaila and dixon should be getting ZERO minutes. the only way to glean some good from these games will be to play the young guys 25-35 minutes a game. we know what songaila and dixon can and cannot do. I’m still not sure about nick young, mcguire, blatche and mcgee.

Rick, you just listed our entire bench. I guess the original starters should just play 48 minutes. Forget that Daniels and Stevenson have been playing through injury. At this point we’re trying things out and seeing what works.
BTW, Even though Blatche only had 6 pts, he had some sick moves.

It really says to me how thin the margin is between the NBA teams. We have essentially the same team as last year except for Thomas and McGee in place of Haywood and Brown and Dixon in place of Mason. Blatche, Young, and McGuire are back and playing a little better. Yet look at the difference in record.

not the whole bench GlingGling. Thomas and Pecherov should also be riding the pine right now. I appreciate that Thomas is trying to come back from an entire year off, but he looks a half step behind on every defensive possession. He is missing a lot of layups too. Maybe Pech should spend some time in the D-League.
But Dixon getting more minutes that McGuire? and Blatche? Dixon was unwanted by every other team in the league.
And Songaila might provide some offense (the only thing that EJ awards with playing time) but his defense is horrendous. It seemed like every time he scored last night, David Lee would come back and make a layup against him.

I don’t know what to tell you Rick. Things are tough because nothing seems to be working. We’re only second guessing all these guys because of that.
We may have to wait till next season. Gilbert should be back by the new year but it may be too late by then and I’m not even expecting Arenas to turn the ship around. It will just be nice seeing him playing again.

Question for all the Wizards fans:
EJ is 197-224 (a .421 winning percentage) as the Wizards head coach…
In your opinion what percentage of games that the Wizards have won can be directly attributed to EJ’s coaching?; what percentage of the games that they have lost can be directly attributed to his coaching?
EJ’s direct influence on win = .
EJ’s direct ijnfluence on loss = .
Let’s hear it!

EJ, ET, and AD are not positive influences on the team.
I have never heard a coach throw so many players under the bus to compensate for his own poor coaching.
AD slows the game to a crawl-even when 100% healthy; ET does nothing except posture even on those rare occurrences when he actually puts the ball in the basket.
The Wizards bloggers are are a statistical representation of the real Wizards fans. They care; they express their opinions; they deserve better than Eddie Jordan.
The observations of the Nick’s game are ON TARGET:
1. POOR rotation (JM, AB with extended minutes on the bench against a much smaller team);
2. CB benched for poor defense when he is told to double-down and then scramble back to stop the 3 point shot;
3. Not being smart enough to instruct the team to intentionally foul in an attempt to convert on a missed foul attempt until it’s too late to make a difference.
PLEASE…Give the fans who are supporting this team some voice!!!

Actually, Etan’s minutes against the Knicks were pretty productive.
Criticizing Antonio Daniels’ play (i.e. when healthy) indicates that a person just doesn’t understand basketball.
Research shows that coaches have no significant effect on their teams’ wins and losses. The “players” play the game — that’s why they are called “the players.”
Juan Dixon is a marginal NBA player; that he is getting significant minutes is an indication that we don’t have anyone else to go to. That he is on the team at all is an indication of problems in roster and salary management.
No, Nick Young is not playing better this year than last. He is only playing more — not better.

After watching the game on Saturday night I came away with these thoughts about if I was the coach what i would do to jump start the Wiz. First of all until AD is healed I would let Dee Brown know that he has to take ownership of the PG. For one thing Dee do not be afraid of taking the open shot. They are daring you to shoot. Pick your spots and hit that three like you use to in Illinois. Most of all get the team to move the ball around at least 3 to 4 passes before taking good shots. We can’t run and gun with these other teams shooting us down with threes from way back. We have to slow the tempo and play smarter. Players right now are rushing their shots and going one on one. We need a floor general to set the tempo. On top of that we are not in good position to get back on defense.
I would insert Nick Young into the lineup and see if he wants to give the job back to DS. NY scores points and we need someone to consistently score points to support AJ and CB. What I like about NY is that he can create his own shot and I believe the more he plays the more he will settle down his game and we will see more of his talent. Even with certain things that NY does not do well he is more useful to us if he is scoring points. Reason again we need a consistent third scorer. It is not coming from DS or AB consistently.
As for AB I don’t fault him totally. Someone is suppose to be teaching him how to play as a big man down low in this league.
The good part about playing Javale, Dee, Nick, Dominic and AB more is that is the only way they are going to improve.
Next year the Wiz need to seriously look at landing a everyday PF who can score and rebound and have AJ come off the bench as the 6th man. That will prolong his career.
Also I would use OP more to shoot some threes show us if he can help us in the short or long run.
After all we are 1-10 and what EJ has been doing is not working so let’s shake it up some more. For the vets on the team the NBA is about what have you done for me lately. You can’t live off of last year, it is is gone.
If I am your coach then show me 110 % effort if not. Take a seat.

I JUST HEARD THAT EDDIE JORDAN HAS BEEN FIRED FROM THE WIZARDS. IF THAT IS SO THAT IS THE STUPIDESS MOVE EVER. ERNIE GRUNFELD YOU ARE AN IDIOT. EDDIE JORDAN HAS COACHED THIS TEAM TO 4 STRAIGHT PLAYOFF APPEARANCE. ERNIE YOU MAKE DUMBASS MOVES IN THE OFF SEASON AND EDDIE TAKES THE HEAT. HOW ABOUT YOU NOT PAY GILBERT ARENAS A MAXED OUT CONTRACT. HOW ABOUT YOU DONT PAY JAMISON 4 MILLION DOLLARS MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE WOULD. EVERY PERSON HE GUARDS HAS A CAREER NIGHT ON HIM. THIS TEAM HAS MORE HOLES THAN SWISS CHEESE AND YOU PART WITH THE ONLY PERSON THAT HAS SOME SANITY TO HIM. VERY UNFAIR AND ANOTHER QUESTION WHO IS GONNA COACH THIS TEAM? I GUESS YOU ARE GOING TO CHALK THIS SEASON UP ALREADY. GREAT CALL ERNIE!!!

Aundra — I can’t find anything like that anywhere (wch doesn’t mean you are wrong, of course). I hope it’s not true.
I think Abe would have to sign off on something like that, and that doesn’t seem super likely.
On the other hand — get off Jamison, will you? He is everything you could ask him to be.

NO!!! It’s not EJ’s fault! This is bad becuase Gilbert wanted EJ to stay.
Eddie Tapscott to take over?

Ivan Carter of the Post announced it at 9:42 a.m…Eddie is out and Ed is in.
I tend to agree that this is a mistake, but I need some more time to fully process this.
I want to hear how this will actually change things? It is not like the Wiz are as bad as the Thunder? They are a few Gil Takeovers away from 5-5. That is still not great, but it is a long season.
I am a Browns fan also…let’s just say I was expecting one of my team’s to fire their coach…the Wiz were not it!

Yes, so it seems — the news is on the Post’s “Wizards Insider.”
This isn’t going to help; even if we start to win a little bit, it won’t be because of a new coach.
Doc Rivers was rumored to be on the chopping block the summer before last. Look what a better coach he suddenly became once Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, James Posey and P.J. Brown were added to his roster!

Eddie will have a nice vacation, relax a bit with family, then land somewhere as an assistant at a good salary. Soon enough, he’ll be a head coach again. Don’t worry about him.
I guess maybe Ernie feels that Eddie isn’t getting enough out of Ernie’s great draft choice Oleksiy Pecherov? Or his other great draft choice Nick Young? Or his great long-term contract decision Etan Thomas? Or 2d rounder Andray Blatche? Or marginal players like Juan and Dee?
Marcus Williams — who certainly has the ability to be a starting point guard in the league — is available from GS. Do we have someone they might want in return? Gee, do you think they’d take Pecherov? After all, we picked him instead of Marcus (and instead of Rajon Rondo, Josh Boone, or Jordan Farmar — could we trade him for any of those guys?).
Oh well…

Well, all of you EJ bashers finally got your wish. Now let’s see what’s gonna happen. I fell this was a terrible move but remember, Eddie was not Ernie’s coach. Now it’s gonna be interesting to see who they bring in. Will they bring in a defensive minded coach? Will they get a Van Gundy or Avery Johnson, or even pluck Tom T away from Boston? This season is a crazy one but i feel we’ll be ok. I just wonder how the players feel right now and what is going through Gil’s mind? This season has really pissed me off so far but i will feel a lot better if David Stern approaches the podium and says the Wizards select….. Blake Griffin from Oklahoma!!! because it’s lookin like lottery for us. We’ll miss you Eddie!!! You’ll succeed elsewhere. Now make a smart decision Ernie to cover up for this dumb one!

I don’t even know what to say about this. On one hand I love Eddie Jordan and can’t thank him enough for doing as much as he did for our team over the last 6 years. On the other, this season has been so hard as a fan because I know that we are infinitely better than our record. There have been so many disappointments such as Gil and Brendan’s injuries, Blatche’s seemingly halted development, and not being able to close out games in general. Here’s hoping we turn this season around.

Okay, I am back…I have had some time to digest this whole thing. I have read posts one here and on the Post’s website.
Count me in the portion of the population that is a little sad to see EJ go, but thinks this move will ultimately benefit the team.
There is NO WAY I am giving up on a season just 11 games in. I am also not going to grade the Gil re-signing until I see him when he comes back. I agree that the Wiz need a coach with a defensive mindset. We should get to see what Ayers is made of now.
I, too, am interested to see who they hire as their full-time coach. I wonder if they will bring someone in this season, since it is so early. I, for one, would LOVE to see Avery Johnson in DC. He is not so much of a “players coach” as EJ.
I have been lamenting for while, like others, about Eddie’s rotations. Most recently, I was in favor of starting JaVale.

So when do we STOP firing coaches for the incredibly bad moves made by ownership. Face it Ernie made a stupid move paying Gilbert(ball hawk, no teamplay, injured before leaving Golden State) Arenas 100 mill. Dumb! Dumb! Dumb! He has no business sence as well, just look at how The greatest to ever play the game was handeled here in Washington. In fact last year they looked better in the playoffs WITHOUT Gilbert. Stop trying to fill the seats with names and pay attention to your players put the right ones on the floor and they will win and we will pack the house. Gilbert is like Stephan Maubry- great player one on one , but a real cancer to a team. The front office of this franchise don’t have a clue. Just look at George Mason – now with the spurs puttin up numbers, and Gilbert , collecting a check- Jokes on Ernie!!!!!

Yeah this news hit me like a brick in the stomach yesterday when I saw it flash up on ESPN news. I think this is kind of crazy – I mean that Eddie was the Eastern Conference All-Star Coach a couple seasons ago. After like a decade and half draught he gets the team to the playoffs 4 times. There are business decisions and there are good business decisions. When someone with a proven record falters you don’t fire them. And if you do you do so in between seasons: (1) You give Eddie the respect he deserves by giving him time to finding another team (2) you give your new coach time to get his system in place, (3) your marketing and ticket sales are tied to a team with a coach and a system in place. This was not a good decision. Good to exceptional coaches like Johnson, Saunders or Van Gundy will take months to put their system in place. Only really a guy like D’Antoni with a fluid offensive system would work midseason – and points hasn’t been the problem. Its defense and that takes time.
I think this all started to turn on Eddie when he didn’t make the Tom T. situation work. I think since then Ernie has just been waiting for Eddie falter – like if you don’t get us out of the first round you’re on the hot seat. I think that is who Ernie wants and I think that is who we’ll get with a whole lot of other roster changes. I will be at the arena cheering for a playoff berth but I think it is likely another 2 years out. The one upside is nosebleed tickets will be $10 again.
Thanks Eddie Jordan for putting a system and a leading a team that has been the best team since the title team. I’ll be rooting for you when you land in Phoenix or Chicago next year.
