Game Day Rockets
6:51 AM….Dave Johnson checking in….It is great to have a home game but it is tough one. Working on my game prep for this Rockets game and it is no headline flash that the Rockets are a good team…. and it sounds like Yao Ming will be back tonight…Yao did not play in their game against the Mavericks because of a sore left foot…..Gilbert Arenas will have his wax figure unveiled tonight at Verizon Center as well….and yes it is encouraging that he is talking about being able to play 40 minutes by January…and yes I heard him talk about the benefit of last place is a top pick but he does not want last place and this team is not working on last place…It was tough to go in that locker room Wednesday in Atlanta…it was real pain for Antawn Jamison..as I watched him talk all I could think of was running into him early one September morning as he was going to the gym….these guys worked hard to get ready for the season and it is not going well…tonight would be a huge lift….here’s to an upset win….BLOGCAST–connect court side as we blab away on the radio—starts at 7….it is 980 AM in Washington…94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia ….92.7 FM in Southern Maryland and 1370 AM in Baltimore and of course online there will be a listen LIVE link posted at the top of the page.
6:20 PM….Dave Johnson checking in from the Verizon Center…Dee Brown and JaVale McGee will start again tonight…Antonio Daniels will come off the bench…
6:50 PM Starters are in…Brown, Stevenson, Butler, Jamison, McGee for the Wizards…Alston, McGrady, Artest, Scola, and Yao for the Rockets

Today is really exciting for me because I’m going home today after school for thanksgiving!! So tonight I’ll be able to watch my Wizards….I’m hoping for a win, but to do so, Caron needs to be more efficient on his passing….he’s only got 4 per game right now and we need him to give at least 6 without the presence of daniels and arenas…..BLATCHE NEEDS TO STEP UP!!!! It’s like he hasn’t existed this season….I mean seriously him and Darius need to be more efficient and pick up the slack off the bench……You know this might sound crazy, but with the good lineup Houston has…..anybody think it would be crazy if this was our lineup tonight:
1. Stevenson
2. Butler
3. Jamison
4. Blatche
5. McGee
6. Young
7. Thomas
8. Dixon
9. Brown
10. Songaila
??
or this:
1. stevenson
2. young
3. butler
4. jamison
5. McGee
6. Blatche
7. Thomas
8. Songaila
9. Dixon
10 Brown
??
I know it’s only the beginning of the season….but I don’t want to be a lottery team….Arenas was quoted on NBA.com for saying he sees us being one, and how that might actually be good….Sure we would get a lottery pick, but at what expense? Don’t you think someone would fire Eddie Jordan if we went from a playoff team for consistent years to a lottery team all of a sudden?
Comment from Rick
Time November 21, 2008 at 1:13 PM
i think blatche has played with energy the last few games but still isn’t getting the minutes to get into a groove and be productive. starting dee brown is silly. he was a hair away from not even being in the league. i say go with one guard (stevenson). or start stevenson and young.
Comment from neal
Time November 21, 2008 at 1:23 PM
I think Brown and Stevenson will be as good as Dixon and Stevenson, or better. Maybe it will make a difference for Stevenson – maybe he’ll get it together now. If not, maybe he’ll be the next to lose his starting spot.
I’m a little more worried about McGee. I’d hate to see him rushed into things too fast.
Comment from ericw
Time November 21, 2008 at 1:31 PM
how about that gigantic lineup eddie played on wednesday? i think it was mcgee, blatche, pecherov, butler, young? that could be 80% wrong… anyone remember? that was interesting.
i think if you play stevenson as the only guard he’s going to be ineffective on offense. it makes sense that nick young should be able to penetrate and find deshawn for some open 3’s but i havn’t specifically noticed that happening.
Comment from ericw
Time November 21, 2008 at 1:35 PM
an open 3 is about the only shot deshawn has and i dont think he’s been getting them lately… probably the cause of his ZERO FOR SEVEN shooting on tuesday?!?!

Rushed?….The man is playing like he wants to be the starting Center!
Man if you look at his stats per-48 mins…they are awesome..
19.1 pts 13.2 rebs 2.25 blks 1 stl per GAME…
I dont think he needs 48 mins to accomlish all that ESPECIALLY if he could convert all those missed lobs….
Comment from Tom Mandel

Give Eddie credit for (finally) mixing up the line up. He needs to give the big line up a chance to develop. I still think the Wiz can be a .500 team, I don’t care what Gil says. He is just lucky that Madam Toussard didn’t make a wax figure of him sitting on the bench in street clothes.

As far as McGee, he’s a rookie…..he can play major minutes, he’s young.
As far as starting, the vets will help him get adjusted….their coaches on the floor. Let’s keep cheering him as well as NY, the vets can’t get it done by themselves.

You guys are ALL nuts!
Trade Butler?
This is a long season… We are using shoestrings, rubber bands, smoke & mirrors right now. We started a PG that wasn’t in the league last season & a center that’s nine games into his rookie year while asking him to check Yao Ming.
We played out of our minds (Blatche played his best game, D Song & Juan hit a few shots they haven’t been making, Jamison was a beast until the 4th, Butler always steady, etc) & the game still stayed relatively close because of Houstons depth. They got hot & it was lights out… Sure, we blew a couple possessions down the stretch & shouldn’t have lost track of McGrady but Artest & Skip both hit daggers as well.
Houston is a really good team & thus in crunch time, got it done.
The Wiz will get wins soon (we’re already competitive)… Probably tomorrow night?
The last two games have been tough but there are bright spots if you look hard enough

I just saw the last 10 min. It’s a perfect example of when a team expects to win they end up doing things to fulfill their expectations in the end. And if it’s in a team’s subconscious that they’ll eventually screw it up, they’ll fulfill that self-prophesy also.
That latter used to describe the Bullets. Then for the last five years it hasn’t. They now look like the losers they used to be. Hard to get that kind of thing out of your head.
Apart from that the Wiz looked just plain out-manned in the part I saw. I don’t think we have the answer for Yao Ming, Artest and McGrady. If we were to play them 10 times we’d be lucky to win 2.

JORDAN SNATCHES DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY
Wiz 1 Opposition 9
I would complain if EJ was the coach of my child’s 8th grade team. He is HORRIBLE as a game coach. It took some manipulation to lose tonight’s game, but EJ was up to the task.
If AD or ET ever walk onto the court in a real NBA game for the Wizards again, EJ or whoever is the coach should be fired as they check in. Those two are WAY over the hill as NBA players and should consider resigning to save face. We had the game in hand and then EJ decides to “play the veterans”. Nice move EJ. I have seen Jr. H.S. coaches with more understanding of the game and more control of the situation. Those two just take the fight out of a team.
The Wiz are “one-and-out” (at best) as long as EJ is the coach. However, this year we are probably a lottery team. I CAN’T STAND THAT THOUGHT…unless we draft a coach with our first round pick.
BTW, I thought that DS and AB played GREAT. AJ and CB were their usual all-star status. DM was a game changer as long as he was in there. Slick Nick did not get nearly enough minutes; DM sat while ET played (really bad choice).
Come on EG, LET’S GET A REAL NBA COACH!!!!
Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 21, 2008 at 11:32 PM
I usually agree with you, but the players did not execute down the stretch. The lil tweaks are working (besides the line-ups at the end of the 2nd and 3rd qrtrs) but he does have lil to work with and ALL the players don’t play hard consistently. Of course, hind-sight is 20-20, but the last two games have been very good NBA games, until the last couple of minutes of the game. We were ahead in both games……its coming, just a little more tweaking.

“If AD or ET ever walk onto the court in a real NBA game for the Wizards again, EJ or whoever is the coach should be fired as they check in.” – - getabig…
I disagree here, sorry. What I love about AD is that he knows that he’s not in there to be a ‘scorer’, he’s a hell of a contributor though – great point guard. ET, in my opinion, actually isn’t as bad as what people are making him out to be right now, but since we got someone young like McGee, of course this is how things will be.
No matter what people say and no matter what people are seeing (i.e. certain trades taking place…now everyone wanna copy and ship off our whole team), I LOVE (most of) our guys we got…

Loads of booing at the end of the game… not the greatest thing to hear when you drag your kid to the game, lose and have to hit the cold outside…
To getabig… I agree that the weakest part of EJ’s coaching is his use of rotations, but your ideas are wacky at best. AD being traded is a sad idea. If you watched closely we were soooo much better because he is back to being able to play. And ET played about 5 minutes. It was good to get others breathers and he had a nice block in those 5 minutes…
Here is what I can tell you: If DS keeps shooting this poorly we are in trouble. He is beginning to look like Jarvis Hayes used to…shots not even getting rim… he took several fairly open shots that looked bad. Made up for it a bit with assists, but he needs to either shoot less or something.
Also, at the end of the game, we are having trouble running plays for AJ. This has happened the last two games in the fourth. We need to have him work off some screens, but I think this will come….
Oh, and CB…he is getting closer and closer. You know he is totally back to form when that 4th quarter drive to nowhere resulting in a turnover goes away. It was there again tonight.
Honestly, much improved play. This is lean times for us all, but if we keep improving we are going to start winning. Oh, one more note:
AB… 19 minutes and no turnovers! Now, if he can play that way when there aren’t TV cameras….
Oh, yeah… when you watch live, Dee Brown is wickedly fast and I mean fast.

I question the defensive strategy on Yao. Andray had success fronting him, why didn’t Javale front him? When Andray fronted him, Yao had to reposition himself further from the hoop to get the ball. So far away in fact that you didn’t need to double team him.
Because Javale is just a 20 year old kid who gets pushed around by the bigger guys it would be a better strategy for him to front these players. With his length and jumping ability it would be a very tough entry pass to make. The coaching staff should have already thought of this. Last night the defense failed becaus they shooters open for target practice because of the need to double and triple team Yao.
Comment from Bridge
Time November 22, 2008 at 9:14 AM
On the other end, they [the Rockets] would also do this [double, triple team] to Juan, because, within seconds, they figured out that he’s just gonna shoot the ball and not pass.
Also, I guess that I’ll be in that category of a “fake” Wizards fan??? Well, not really. I criticize Vinny (the Bulls coach) too, as well as D’Antoni all because of this whole Marbury thing. I like to call it ‘being fair’ and objective. (Speaking of objectivity – or lack there of) I sure hope that with the game tonight, I’ll be listening to the New York announcers because I don’t know what’s up with the Wiz one’s lately…
Comment from ChenierFan
Time November 22, 2008 at 9:32 AM
I just read in the Washington Post that the coaching staff did, in fact, want Javale to front Yao. He should have done what they said. That is a much better way for Javale to play guys until he gains another 20lbs.
The Wiz really need a win tonight against the shorthanded Knicks. It’s red alert time.

Hey guys.
I just want to say we had a great three quarters in the game. Energy was there. Defense was there.
Fourth quarter really shocked me. The small lineup really hurt the chances of winning-Rockets had all of their starters in (with exception of Landry) and I thought at the 9/10 minute mark of the quarter Eddie would have done the same by putting the starters in and let them finish the show. I think Eddie came in a little too late by bringing in the starters because Rockets got extremely hot.
**I think its fine to point out a weakness in a coach as well. Everyone does make mistakes. Just because he’s the coach doesn’t exempt him from anything. You know I was listening to the radio (Wiz Radio) and it seemed (to me) that whenever the line-up or anything related to the coach comes up, an immediate rush of disagreement comes from Glen. We all know he is the longest tenured coach; he took the team the playoffs four times…etc whatever… But everyone can improve their actions including the coach. The starting fourth quarter lineup was crazy. Even Mark Jackson and Van Gundy knew it. They stated it at least several times (Not a good lineup) and guess what? Rockets went on a run.
What I’m trying to say is that it’s not all just the players, the coach/ing staff need and should step up too. If that is being a hater on EJ-Then…Well…Whatever
I want to also mention that Blatche (despite what everyone says…) Was the best defender on Yao in the post. NO ONE mentioned that he guarded in front of Yao, NO ONE mentioned that his defense on Yao prevented points for Rockets and created some great plays. He had a great overall game last night. Maybe if encouragement could come from the staff we will be able to see more of this from him.
One more thing. The development of our Rookies is troubling me. I think that we have to get some play out of Pech and McGuire before it’s too late. Those are great players we could have in the rotation but if nothing happens…Well the guy that called in on the radio show said it best that they will go to another team and dominate.
We have the talent, we have the team.
GO WIZ!!!!!!!!
Peace out j50

I don’t know why we’re not seeing Dominic — glad you brought that up.

if you say hey i did not like that line up thats cool but i dont think if Nick kicks a ball off his leg EJ should be fired and every game some one wants him gone its ok to say well you know what i did not like the way he did that its crazy to want to fire him every loss..

good comment sir! but i must go skip bayless on this one. YES this loss gets the finger pointed at eddie. that switch in the fourth quarter killed us. for a minute the bench was scoring but houston sub-ed in tmac n yao and we kept our bench in and it ate us up. blatche u r right on he definitely played excellent defense on yao, but imma give credit to the rookie too! and i must slap myself cause the rookie will help us out! i thought he would suck! someone said send in nick young….. uhhm no all he would do is what juan did, thats shoot the j without strategy lol, just fire away! but i loved the energy from dee brown he made the whole starting lineup move! it was groovey baby! they had their mojo for 3 quarters. someone said trade caron and jamison. i think their is no way u trade caron. is just keeps getting better year in and year out. but jalen rose finally made a good point last night. all n all we have three all stars which only two other teams have in this league so we must do better. we definitely need some durability. but as far as out surrounding ammo…. deshawn, haywood, blatche, young, dominic, AD, mcgee and so on, i am content that is very good help, the big 3 just has too be big, right now anything less than 20 from each of them will not cut it unless they are playing lock down D! n hey yall gotta go see that bernie mac movie man……. it is hilarious! well its classic weekend down here in florida…. im bout to go rep for all my sigmaz out there…….. BLUE PHIIIIIIIIII!!!!! lol

Wow. Who would have thought that by this time McGee and Brown would be starting. Gotta give Jordan credit for having the courage to make big changes.
