Game Day Atlanta
2:58 AM….Dave Johnson checking in…early start or late finish…about to call it a day and get ready for tonight. Sorry I had to jump off the BLOG so fast last night but had a flight to catch. This is life in the NBA…play a game…fly to another city and now another game. Antawn Jamison actually said it might be what the team needs to get some kind of rhythm going. And last night against the Heat it was not for lack of effort. Critical mistakes late in the game made the difference–everything from a traveling call bringing the ball up court (Wizards down only 5 with about 3 to go at that point) to of all things Caron Butler dribbling the ball of his foot.Butler had a terrific night with 21 points and 12 rebounds and so did Antawn Jamison with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Wizards even had a 44-22 advantage on points in the paint. There is no question the Wizards are not playing well right now but, as Glenn Consor and I talked about on the flight down here, this team could very easily be 4-4. But reality is reality and the Wizards have to hope their effort will be matched by better management of possessions. Hope you can join us for the BLOGCAST—radio and blogging court side starting at 7:00PM….there will be a listen LIVE link on the page if you want to use your computer and of the dial in Washington on ESPN 980 AM…NorthernVirgnia/Warrenton 94.3 FM…Southern Maryland 92.7 FM and in Baltimore on 1370 AM..check back later
6:25PM Dave Johnson checking in….could be a couple of adjustments tonight…stay tuned
6:35 PM Starters are in….It is Dee Brown… and DeShawn Stevenson..Caron Butler..Antawn Jamison.. and JaVale McGee,,,,Eddie Jordan will explain the changes coming up with the radio broadcast at 7…Hawks Mike Bobby Joe Johnson Maurice Evans Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia…So the Hawks without Josh Smith and Al Horford because of injuries

Good Morning Guys,
Man we better get this toghether. Tonight would be a great win especially agasint an up-and-coming squad in Atlanta. We NEED to start JaVale McGee in order to get off to a fast start. If we cant get this together and FAST…..
We MAY be looking at:
With the 1st Pick in the 2009 NBA Draft the Washington Wizards select….
Hopefully, just hopefully not case.
I think we will be able to get it together once Gilbert comes back. Especially if Nick and JaVale can keep up the production with low turnovers.

aznzero, that looks like a good formula for success.
wizskins07, if worse came to worst I wouldn’t mind a 1st round draft pick. But really, only if worse came to worst.
Dave/Glenn, at least it’s not a cross country flight on a back to back. And then you have a load of home games!
As for last nights game, it was decent until the end there and then I was just flabbergasted. My brain fell out onto the floor and I could not understand what happened.

GlingGling,
I was watching Okalahoma and Davidson game last night. And I gotta tell ya, I WOULDNT mind Blake Griffin in a Wizards uniform. He is a BEAST. Him in the front court with JaVale McGee down the road would be BEASTY like.
BUT, this doesnt mean we should just lose to try to get one of these guys.

It almost seem like the wizards are trying to go lottery. I mean the way these guys shoot from the line is terrible. Or maybe they are trying to get Jordan fired. Either way they are doing a great job at both.

man…. its been a rough season so far. i know that we are without gil and haywood, and daniels too, but the reality of all this is we were without gil last year and etan so the wizards should be okay, maybe not great but okay at least. maybe 2 or 3 more wins by now. i just done see any fire, hustle, or tenacity. they have to play like the wanna win, and thats from the top to the bottom. i heard someone say that most problems start from the head. that head is jamison. honestly he is a SF playing power foward. he is not a great defender so its not a surprise that the rest of the team is not. i love deshawn he is my favorite but at times his defense is not so locksmith. nick young on d, lol thats funny! caron is not great either i have seen lebron, pierce ,turkogulo, even richard jefferson kill em. and etan is an undersized center. but really the head of this monster is ernie grunfield…. we should have made some moves in the off-season! but when everyone gets healthy we will see what his vision was! defense and durablity are big problems for us. but i am a wiz fan so imma cheer em on regardless

gee wiz, if it makes any difference Steve and Phil said last night that DeShawn and Antonio have been suffering knee pain since the start of the season (If my memory is correct). That could explain more lack of energy out of the starting line up. If you’ve got one guy coming off heart surgery and two other guys dealing with knee pain I would suppose that it would be hard to be effective.

I can always count on ya. (actually my wife wouldn’t miss the Steelers game either lol we grew up 1/4 mile apart back home… she reads a book during the Wizards games but I think she may be running out of books)
The team looks like a chemistry thing. With Juan coming back and playing a key role while trying to get new guys like Nick and JaVale minutes the chemistry is a little off. That will come with time and playing together. This team has a lot of talent.

This is very painful right now as a Wizards fan, but what’s even more painful was to hear EJ’s press conference last night…as a fan, I’m trying really hard to remain positive, but when you hear the coach say this team was built around Gil and that he doesn’t really have the players to get the job done…that was a blower! Guess what EJ…you don’t have Gil, so make the necessary adjustments! So, how are the remaining players supposed to take that? If you hear your coach dogging you publicly; if EJ doesn’t have confidence in the guys that he puts on the floor, then where does the energy/motivation come from…seems like there needs to be an attitude adjustment…we do have the talent, but they’re not playing with the attitude or confidence that they CAN win the game! And would somebody pu-LEEZE tell Blatche that he is NOT A POINT GUARD!!!! Ok, I’m finishing my rant…on to tonight…GO WIZ!!!!

Kayjay, I agree with you about EJ. I had to read that quote a few times myself to get the gist of it… and I agree, it sounds like he is throwing the team under the bus a little bit. He could have said that guys are being forced into new, more intense roles that they are not used to, but that they are working on these new roles and will get better with time or something like that. Something that recognizes their effort and the challenges they face, and that gives everyone some hope and motivation. But just saying the team is not good… that’s kind of harsh if you ask me.

Deshawn is a liability as a starter anyhow, and i don’t care about his 3 point % he’s a bench player and his defense is overrated.Whether he’s hurt or not…what are the wiz truly missing with him not starting?True Brendan made strides last year..very true.In my world he just got a ‘ over the A in BRENDA but it wasn’t removed.
Mcgee isn’t much of a drop off from Haywood even as a rookie. EJ should lose his job for doing what he continues to do year in and year out.He lacks imagination, and he lacks confidence in his players..not to mention he doesn’t know how to coach, and go to war with the soldiers he has at his disposal. This team is built for Gilbert Arenas in his eyes because he doesn’t have the eyes to see the gems he has on this team even without Gil.He doesn’t coach to the strength of his players and the Princeton aint doin it. Either he is to stubborn or too inept to install other means of offense besides 3 passes and a heave. If Larry Brown took the Wiz’s reigns instead of the Bobcats this team would be a threat..even scotty skiles may have coached the Wiz up better than this.
And can somebody answer me this who signs D brown ,but lets a hungry Demarr Johnson go.The micheal Adams days are over, and so are D brown’s days in Illinois…the guy is a waste of space. This team needs more of a philosophy and attitude adjustment than it needs anything else…But I’ll say it again spending 100 mil on a one trick pony, and not bringing in a some veteran toughness and points at the 4 and the two cost this team alot of years to come.

D.C. I will do my best to respond to some of your strong statements. We both obviously have different opinions but here are my thoughts.
DeShawn- I don’t think anyone knows how much he’s been playing through at the end of last year and this year. He’s a fighter and I can’t disrespect a guy that gets on the court and plays everyday and doesn’t miss a start.
The Brenda comments are old. Brendan was the leader of this defense last year. He brought stability to the center position and gave every center in the league problems. He improved his FT% and thus became more aggressive on the offensive end. He understands tendencies, spacing and other areas that dont show up in a stat sheet. JaVale is not there yet. He’s great, he’s athletic but he makes mistakes as all rookies do.
Last year the Wizards went something like 2-9 last year without AD. They can handle the injury to Gil, but now you are starting your third string point guard. That is very difficult to overcome.
Scott Skiles completely lost his Chicago team and had the most underachieving team in the league last year. Ditto for Larry Brown in New York and the olympics.
As for the DerMarr Johnson statements im just not buying the comment The guy had moments when he looked very good and moments when he didn’t. He did was he was brought in to do provide competition in camp. Nonetheless I dont see this teams win-loss record being any different with or without him.
Again I just completely disagree on the coaching aspects. Eddie didn’t travel at halfcourt, he didnt dribble the ball off his foot. He didnt miss 20 free throws in Milwaukee..

“Scott Skiles completely lost his Chicago team and had the most underachieving team in the league last year.”
Yeah, but before last year? And, I wouldn’t say “the most underachieving”; maybe [ONE OF] “the most underachieving teams…” I’m a Bulls fan, (so) I think that it’s best to know the whole story behind that whole situation…Nevertheless, Scott is still a pimp at what he does and I must admit that I almost cried looking at the Bucks/Grizzlies game some days ago, all because of how he encourages teamwork and really takes the time out to appreciate his players and what they do…
Other than that, GO WIZ…

To answer Sportswiz, no one questions DeShawn’s dedication at all. He is one tough competitor. But the problem is, hamstring or not, he is not contributing much of anything on either end of the court. And what is this fixation on this streak of starting games he has. Who cares? He is probably no where near the all-time record anyhow. And I am tired of hearing how Jamison has another “double-double”. That’s great, but I want wins!
I’m wondering how many games Eddie is willing to sacrifice before he gives a bigger line-up a chance. Tonight we have a 2-guard who is 6’7″. That is the trend around the league. Butler is 6’7″. I think Butler could become an all-star at the 2 just as he is at the 3 and the move to the 2-guard would help the team get over the chronic undersized situation they are in against the good teams.
Eddie’s got to find a way to get this team to win some games. How about starting tonight?

I seem to have to repeat myself: we are losing because we don’t put enough productive players on the court. We have 3 of our 5 best players out w/ injury. End of story.
It’s going to be a long season; I hope everyone turns around their attitude. I don’t mind criticizing where I see fault, but injury is not anyone’s fault.
As to DeShawn, what is the point of criticizing him? No, he is not a terrific NBA player, but he certainly gives effort.

Oh man, crazy starting line-up tonight. We’re at the point where Eddie has got to switch it up. Things aren’t working. I thought for sure we would take care of Miami last night after a few days rest and time to review tape.
One key thing that we need to do tonight is to start off with intensity. Last night we had intensity in the second half of the 4th quarter. That is how we should be playing the whole game now. Stop relaxing and taking outside shots with 20 on the shot clock.
Here’s hoping we take it to the basket tonight. Oh yea, and win too.

man, so all these people criticizing ej for not starting a rookie and going with the veterans – it took him 8 games to mix it up. he gave the veterans a shot to develop some chemistry and changed it quick when it didn’t work. i don’t know how any nba team is supposed to have a good record without their starting point guard, backup point guard, and starting center. you have no one to initiate plays and set up the offense and your defensive anchor is gone. basically your two most important positions are being played by third string players and rookies. pick any nba team and remove the same position players and see where’d they’d be right now. it’s miserable to watch them struggle, but at least we get to see lemonhead develop.

right now starting dee and McGee was a big factor to help us keep out of the big holes!! Now it’s some of the same issues of D, less TO’s at the wrong time, better rebounding; getting 2nd chance points, more drives and easier baskets on fast breaks (which is helped by better D) but there intensity was so much better!!!

these divisional games are very important in the end. we really need to win against these teams. we havent won any in our division. im suprised we beat a western team which like year we had the hardest time beating a western team.
to all those pple saying we dont need Gil:
clearly this team needs gil especially in the final moments in the game. i think im going to look at some gilbert arenas vids to cheer me up.
i thought we played very well and loved how javale and dee started. i have no idea why eddie took javale out at the end? it seems like each and every game we are getting so close to breaking out this funk. i think we are cursed and the basketball gods hate us for some reason.

JaVale isn’t a strong rebounder yet. he is still a little too skinny

i added another factor to my equation:
defend the three + limit turnovers at a critical time + “rebounding” = WIN

seemed like JaVale was on his butt a couple times so hopfully as he gaines experience, muscle, and a better sense of stance he will be even better!!

It was a great game tonight; we started and ended with FIRE. I think that I like Dee in there because he don’t try to take as many shot attempts. The end was kinda sad though because, from what I noticed, Juan had two guys open (D-Steve and Nick) but chose to shoot the ball anyway?? We could’ve easily won if he would’ve just passed (the ball)!
We played great though, and I really liked EJ’s line-ups tonight (told y’all I’m not a EJ hater – just not about to be biased though either)
GO WIZARDS!!!!!!!!

I don’t care how we lose. A loss is a loss. A close loss is as bad as a blowout. EJ can figure out a way to lose either way. I’m too disgusted to comment.
Ernie, If I were you I would try to figure out a way to disassociate myself from that loser coaching staff. Otherwise, when the decision-makers wake up, you are toast also.

Obviously, we are not a playoff team this year. How about getting rid of the management that created this monster and installing a group that will go with the younger guys to try to develop them. This is a talented group of young players. They need COACHING in individual and team concepts. Let’s get a management staff that can do that.

I watched part of the game tonight. IMO I didn’t see a sign of the Princeton offense. Maybe that’s because of the personnel we have. Jamison is totally a 1 on 1 player, same with Young, not to mention Arenas who is mostly the same. Comments?
The other night I saw Brown play George Mason. Brown was totally out-manned, but it was interesting to watch them run what looked like to me 100% Princeton offense. The ball rarely hit the floor more than once.
Blatche looked like he’s settling down a bit. Butler is playing like an all-star.

Abe bounced the most famous Jordon of all because Abe thought that he was a negative influence on the organization. How about bouncing our current Jordon because he is really a bad NBA coach….or is the NBA really only about $$$ and the fans had better learn to put up with a loser organization that makes money regardless of any fan’s opinion.

What??? Neal being NICE – that’s a shocker
; just kidding…You know, it’s weird that you said something about the Princeton Offense thing (“I didn’t see a sign of the Princeton offense.”) because I swear that I was just talking about that; in other words, I didn’t see signs of it either – just them playing like themselves and as a team. That’s cool
.
Getabigboyoffense – we just gotta deal with him and just continue to root for our team…
And WOW!! Our Wiz WILL FINALLY BE ON ESPN FOR FRIDAYS GAME (from what I heard while watching the Mavs/Rockets game)!!!!

slwiz you have to let windy city (i think that’s right) that Dee is starting
HEY – THANKS for thinking of me! I actually caught the first few minutes of the game – nice start for the team. Then I had to go out and got home just in time for the last few minutes. Tough, tough loss.
And if I’m home in the evenings to see/listen to the game, I try to keep up with the blog too, I just suck at multi-tasking and can’t listen, watch, think and type at the same time. I don’t know how you do it – ya’ll have far more talent than I do.

hey guys, sorry i didn’t really post but more than 3 or 4 comments, was more into just watching it instead of blogging and watching. someone mentioned something to me about saying it was too early to say we won’t make the playoffs:
whoever that was, no i am not giving in too early. i am just saying that because out of all the games we have lost, half of them have been to bad teams (teams that missed the playoffs last year; not going by losing record cuz hawks were 37-45). think about the first 8 games’ teams and their 2007-08 record:
New Jersey (95-85): missed playoffs
Detroit (117-109): lost in conf. finals
Milwaukee (112-104 OT): missed playoffs
New York (114-108): missed playoffs
Orlando (106-81): lost in conf. semis
Utah (95-87): lost in conf. semis
Miami (97-77): worst team in the league last year
Miami (94-87): worst team in the league last year
Atlanta (91-87): lost in first round last year
the biggest trend I have noticed is our point production. we are averaging 92.6 points per game, a far cry from what we normally do, and in exchange giving up 101.4 points per game.. that’s a pretty big differential compared from last year.

What a bunch of wankers you all are… This team needs it’s fans to be patient. Injuries are kicking the organization in the butt. We are playing our 3rd & 4th team PG’s (2 seasons ago Taylor barely got off the bench, this year he’d be starting) & relying on the 2 spot to produce points from the guard position. DSS is obviously NOT that guy (never was he supposed to be), he is & was always the defensive stopper because Gil, CB & AJ are supposed to be getting the buckets. In any event, we all know the drama that has unfolded there because of Gils injury…
So we hand the reigns to AD & now he’s out… Our low post is a mess because Haywood pulls up lame & we’ve yet to develop either McG (both should develop nicely in time). We are caught in an interesting quagmire & need to be patient. Sure, watching this team perform pathetically is torture but I have to keep hope alive.
The Wiz & The Pistons have the longest running post season activity in the east & EJ coached the All Star team two seasons ago & everyone wants to jump ship on him? What a bunch of front runners you all are!
The team is not executing… PERIOD. They are young & playing young… By midseason, they will be playing much more competitive basketball.

Juan went 1-7 from the field, and Nick went 4-12. Nick also turned the ball over 4 times.
I’m sure with a different coach, these guys would play much better?
We don’t win because we’re not a very good team. We’re not a very good team because we don’t have enough good players right now.
I suppose, if you feel like blaming someone other than the players themselves, you could blame Ernie — he drafted Pecherov when there were much better players available. But, this kind of hindsight is always easy and misleading.
So… Nick is not working out very well. Juan Dixon is a marginal nba player. Andray Blatche is working himself out of the league and doesn’t seem to care. Dominic is developing slowly (I guess?). Dee is marginal but at least contributes a little on balance. JaVale is a rookie. Etan is still on his way back. Darius is a steady backup vet and that’s all. DeShawn works hard but isn’t really very good. Antonio is out.
Caron and Antawn played excellent ball last night, and we still couldn’t get a win. We’re not very good.
Still my team! Hey, maybe we’ll get the first pick in the draft?

Yeah Gee Wiz – you know it’s gotta be like that sometimes lol. Life is Life. No UCF – sorry – - I know that Orlando was looking forward to me coming there lol; no matter how much one would want to, relocating during an economy like this just doesn’t seem possible. I’ll be at Cardinal Stritch – - but man(!), I don’t even wanna think about school right now!! Hope you been ok – you gotta start coming in more (to blog) like you used to

It’s not surprising that several of you guys are calling for Jordan’s head at this point. What I’d like to hear are ideas as to who would be better.
