Game Day Miami

5:42 AM…..Weather is nice wish you were here….Dave Johnson checking in. Wizards had been working really hard leading up to Wednesday’s win and had a light practice before coming here yesterday. It’s a win for the Wizards to feel good about. It was a tight game the Wizards found a way to close. The Wizards have to watch out for turnovers. The Jazz did not fully capitalize on the Wizards 17 turnovers. As for tonight Antonio Daniels might have to sit because of a sore knee. It will aso be interesting to see if  Eddie Jordan finds a need at any point to use that “big” lineup he used Wednesday withDeShawn Stevenson and Caron Butler in the back court, Antawn Jamison and Andray Blatche at forwards, and JaVale McGee at center. Spread the word …all the fun starts at 7:30 PM with theBLOGCAST…radio with a live blog….connect with us court side. On radio on 980 AM in Washington, 92.7 FM in Southern Maryland,94.3 FM in Warrenton and Northern Virginia, and 1370 AM in Baltimore…on TV on CSN+ and there will be a listen live link at the top of the page….maybe I will check in later pool side

6:55 PM..Dave Johnsonchecking in from American Airlines Arena….internet would not work pool side…starters are in…no Antonio Daniels (sore right knee)..so it is Juan Dixon, DeShawn Stevenson, Etan Thomas, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison….Heat will go with Mario Chalmers, Dwyane Wade, Udonis Haslem, Michael Beasley, and Shawn Marion....Marion is back after missing two games with a groin strain…

I really like the BIG lineup and I think it is important. Here’s why:

The top 5 teams in the East all have big front lines!

Celtics – 6’11, 6’10, 6’7
Hawks – 6’11, 6’10, 6’9
Cavs – 7’3, 6’9, 6’8 (Wallace and LeBron both play even bigger)
Pistons – 6’11, 6’11, 6’9
Magic – 6’11, 6’11, 6’10

Wiz – 6’10, 6’9, 6’7 (Thomas is strong but not long or a leaper. Jamison is a finesse player, not physically dominant)

If you swap out McGee for Thomas, that helps some, but JaVale plays better with another big man to help cover his free-wheeling spirit on defense.

man i wish i was there dave. its raining here in southern maryland again!

other then that its a great day today. hopefully i can blog but i may have to be with the lady today. good thing i can listen to the radio now while im on the road.

i actually liked the big lineup. forced alot of opponents to change their shot while in the lane and we were outrebounding them. this is not the same heat team from the past couple years. we cant take them lightly. we shouldnt take anyone lightly!

Lets go Wiz!

sportzwiz
I am in Florida and I cannot register for the Caron Butler game. Can this be fixed? at least add FL to the states that can register to play ;-)
On the other hand, if you play big we’ll win this game with rebounding and in the paint. And don’t double team down low to leave 3 point shooters open. Chris Quinn and Cook are hitting them at a high rate this season.
go wiz

sorry arden i dont believe so, its one of those legal issues only people within a certain radius of dc can play.

SportzWiz, that post you made with several posts from Draft Night was priceless. I can safely say I wouldn’t have been one of McGee’s detractors because I didn’t know a damned thing about him. Although when they picked him my friend (a Houston fan but lives here in MD) said, “That’s a really good pick, I’ve been following him for a while. I was hoping the Wiz would get him.” So from there I was excited to see him play.

I can say that his growth from summer league till now has been immense. In summer league I was mostly high on Dominic who did really well. Andray was also doing very well. McGee showed only slight flashes so he didn’t stand out to me too much. Now he’s getting double doubles and changing shots like a champ.

arden1006, good advice I agree to not double down low. Etan and McGee can probably easily take Haslem/Blount. Beasley physically can probably take Jamison apart (though Jamison has years of experience on his side) and he’s probably skilled enough to shake Andray. Still I wouldn’t be doing a lot of doubling down low. Like you said, leaving Chris Quinn open is a death sentence. #1 priority tonight is slowing down Wade (because lets face it he can’t be stopped).

Comment from Andycaron

How do you play the Caron Game. I don’t know the controls!

Comment from arden1006
Time November 14, 2008 at 3:51 PM

yeah but Wade cannot beat us by himself… he can get his 30+, but if we shot down the 3 point shots we’ll be fine. With Leamonhead overthere, our inside defence is covered. Let Wade pentrate, so McGee can have a seazon high in blocks. Just stick with the shooters!!!

I still don’t think McGee should start. He’s doing well off the bench. Don’t change things by upping expectations. Just keep increasing his minutes for now.

Comment from Jason C
Time November 14, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Ok thanks for the quick response sw.

@ neal, I think Javale should start because we’ve had to play from behind in almost every game until he started. I’d rather the game be close in the beginning than us trying to dig out of a hole later.

Well, Jason, I guess we can agree to disagree. Like Jordan said, it would be ideal to bring McGee along even more slowly than is happening. I think it’s more important to develop McGee correctly than win a game or two now. Same with Young. Let their confidence grow and make sure they’re learning the game as they go. That’s also better for the guys that are losing minutes: Thomas and Stevenson. They get to work on getting back to peak form, rather than being benched immediately. If nothing changes the young guys will be starting before Arenas gets back and then we’ll see.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 14, 2008 at 6:11 PM

The game is televised, yes — it’s on CSN+.

Go to http://comcastsportsnet.com/pages/main and pick your region, then put in your zip code, and maybe you’ll find it in your area, especially if Comcast is your cable provider. Where I am it’s on 98.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time November 14, 2008 at 6:19 PM

wiz-skins im not bashing the people that made those comments. There were a lot of people that made statements about the pick. And I think this is one of those were most everyone is glad they were wrong (While i liked the pick i didnt expect him to get this type of playing time or production as a rookie and Im very happy I was wrong!)

I just thought it would be fun to look back and see where our mindsets were five months ago.

My friend thinks Shawn Marion is out tonight, is this right? I haven’t been able to find anything on it.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 14, 2008 at 6:53 PM

I sure hope Marion is out for the night; maybe, wherever he goes, he can take Wade with him????? Pretty please???? :)

Re: the pick of JaVale. There are 2 different issues; one is did we pick the right guy w/ the #18 pick. He looked like a very good choice at 18; I am not sure there was ever much question about that. Yes, I would have preferred Speights, but he wasn’t there; he was gone.

The other question, very different and now very irrelevant, is what’s the best way to manage a draft? I’m a devotee of the economist way of being a GM. Houston’s Darrell Morey is the best example. Ernie is a very traditional basketball guy.

I wanted to trade down in the draft and get more assets out of it. No one knows whether maybe JaVale might have been available in the 20s?

In any case, this is *all* water under the bridge. It’s lot more fun to pay attention to games than to picks!!

Comment from GlingGling
Time November 14, 2008 at 7:01 PM

From Fantasy News:

‘”Analysis: ”It’s looking good,” Marion said. “I was able to do some stuff [Thursday], and I didn’t really feel any pain. But we didn’t do a lot, either. At the same time, I want to play. I wanted to play last [Wednesday] night but they wanted me to sit that one out. I think another day of rest and treatment and stuff and I’ll be ready to go.” Sunday will also be the last day that Marion has to wear the protective mask for his broken nose. Expect Marion to be a game-time decision Friday night against Washington.”‘

He’ll probably play. Might not be 100%. Frankly, I want to see him take some three pointers. I love watching that.

does jordan think that if he keeps doing more of the same, somehow they will start winning?

why won’t he commit to a different lineup?

is he more concerned about caron making the all-star game as a forward or winning games?

is he more concerned with all the veterans liking him than with developing the young talent?

I think that Eddie jordan, while being the longest tenured coach in the Eastern Conference, is the 30th best active coach in the NBA and Etan Thomas is the 360th best player. Can we PLEASE get rid of both. Since I can’t imagine any team that would want him, Ernie, just eat the Thomas contract if you have to.

I was hoping that at half time there would be a joint announcement by Jordan and Thomas that they were both resigning so that EJ could pursue a new career as ET’s literary agent.

Against the Jazz the players overcame EJ’s stupid coaching, but the coaching prevailed against the Heat. Nice match-up’s EJ. Great coaching decisions. NOT!

The player who made the difference against the Jazz was McGee. I haven’t seen the stats yet, but I’ll bet most of his minutes against the Heat were when the game was over.

If I were Andray, I would ask to be traded. This guy has all the talent in the world and he is put in situations where he has to be a combination of MJ/Jabar/Oscar/Bird/Magic to succeed. The result is that he looks bad…and then EJ embarrasses him in the 4th Quarter of a lost game. Give me a break. a PLAYER’S COACH…I don’t think so.

The Eddie offense. Once again…two/three passes and whoever has the ball is on his own to create something.

This offense????? is guard-oriented and the Wiz has the tallest team in the league. What is wrong with this picture? Why is there no focused low-post play for McGee and Andray. Why are they both forced to create some offense from the corner or top of the key.

Why is there so little movement away from the ball???

Ernie, please give us a break and trade or release ET and fire EJ. You are very close to losing a lot of your previously very loyal fan base.

wow!! getabigboyoffense’s comment sounded like a Stephan Smith from ESPN….but it’s hitting home. Time for some changes, where-ever they happen…get it together WIZ!!

And next time your star player (that doesn’t know what to say out of their mouth from day-day) says if you don’t sign someone first, he’s not going to sign….TAKE ALL THE PENS OUT OF THE ROOM AND TELL THEM BOTH TO GO KICK ROCKS!!….and I’m out!!

see ya tuesday

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time November 14, 2008 at 11:42 PM

Ej,

if your still here on Tuesday (which I’m hoping you will not be) how about some extended minutes for a combination of: Juan, CB, AJ, McGee and Andray. You’ll get rebounding and scoring. If you coach it right, you’ll also get better defense because the front line can be more agressive since we will have two shot blockers in the back to help out.

ET is a negative. We love DS’s attitude, but he’s a bench player and should see action after Slick Nick who should be the first man off the bench to replace Juan or CB.

Comment from zbp18
Time November 15, 2008 at 12:19 AM

I’ve finally figured how Eddie picks his starter’s. Like any good coach you rhyme !

Juan, Deshawn, Caron, Antawn, & Etan.

Mcgee would through off his rythem.

Comment from Rick
Time November 15, 2008 at 12:39 AM

i’ll bet that polin doesn’t do anything re: jordan until after gilbert returns. i only hope that jordan sees the writing on the wall and does change before it is too late.

losing like this with 2 all-stars is not OK

alienating blatche is not OK

not playing defense is not OK

scoring < 80 points against the Heat is not OK

to say it is because Arenas and Haywood are injured is not a valid excuse to me.

Something is terribly wrong with this Wizards team right now….Sure we don’t have Haywood this season, but we gained McGee, Dixon, and Brown…..And players like Young and Butler have gotten better….WITH THOSE NAMES WE SHOULD BE BETTER!!! But right now we are the worst team in the league….A few years ago we were considered one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference and now we are the worst…..I mean it’s already 7 games in and it doesn’t look good……I’m not saying what Wizards4life is saying, but something has got to change…..I know this team is good and I know theyre better than this….Whatever happens, I’ll be with em till the end!!

Come on people, besides the Wizards losing it was a great night in basketball. The CELTICS and the LAKERS lost. How can you say no to that? It’s called balance in the universe. If the Wizards would have won, the Celtics and Lakers probably would have won too.

Comment from Rick
Time November 15, 2008 at 5:34 PM

the only tradeable players in my opinion are:

Jamison and Blatche

There are other players that teams would want (young and butler of course), but i don’t think we can part with them.

before trading jamison or blatche, i think a coaching change makes more sense. for those who thinks that EJ deserves more time, when will it be enough? 20 games in? with our record at that point you can pretty much write the season off.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time November 15, 2008 at 5:53 PM

I think you guys are right. Eddie Jordan should Go. His shooting percentage stinks and he can’t defend. Oh wait that’s not Eddie that’s our all stars. Eddie can’t coach the ball into the basket. It’s up to the players to do that. 3 for 10 shooting from our all star may be a little piece of the problem. That was Antawn’s best shooting night at 7 for 14. He was top scorer at 15. With JaVale and Nick at 13 with nobody else close…. not much wonder. For some reason Caron and Antawn have not yet hit their strides. So far all the blog Ohhh’s and Ahhh’s have been over JaVale and Nick. That’s great, but, when we are Ohhhing and Ahhhing over JaVale, Nick, Antawn, and Caron we will again have something.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time November 15, 2008 at 5:57 PM

A trade now would be a mistake. A trade is like any other business transaction. It is best done from position of strength. Being at the bottom end of things does not set us up for the best of negotiations. The other GM’s in the league have no intension of “helping” us.

Comment from Rick
Time November 15, 2008 at 6:20 PM

i agree a trade is unlikely to help us. so what do you suggest Grifon?

Comment from Tom Mandel

Eddie is not the reason we’re losing. The reason the Wizards are losing is simple: we are missing many of our best players. The guys who are playing in their place aren’t real good.

No, Juan Dixon is not even an average NBA player — he worked his way to being completely out of a job the last couple of years, until we came along to sign him at the vet minimum. Now we are counting him — counting on a guy who (great guy tho he is) doesn’t bring enough to the game.

Etan is coming off a year of idleness; what do you expect from him this early in the season.

Andray has simply *not* played to the level of a reliable nba player. Ditto Nick — everyone says “he has improved” — maybe just a little. He still doesn’t put up *total numbers* that are even average for a 2 or 3.

JaVale is a rookie. Not a superstar, a rookie — maybe he will be great. He certainly has had a couple of terrific games. But what he is right now is a raw rookie.

So… right now, we are as good a team as Antawn, Caron and Antonio — our only reliably good players — can make us. That’s not much to work with overall, unfortunately.

Brendan is out; Gil is out; Antawn and Caron are playing below their career numbers right now; Antonio is half-strength at best.

None of this is Eddie’s fault. I doubt his job is in jeopardy, and if he were replaced we would not improve.

how about we wait to see what happens… its only 7 games in its not like we are the knicks.. lets just try to get our line up set to the rotation that will work and get our all stars on the same page and getting back into the game and watch the wins go up that might just work!

The idea of trading Etan doesn’t make much sense — who wants to trade *for* Etan, exactly?

Maybe there are GMs around the league who still think Andray has potential or who are high on Nick or might be interested in Dominic. But, they wouldn’t be likely to give much back.

Someone said “trade Jamison” — Antawn just signed a big contract extension. You can forget about trading him.

Hard to imagine any trade right now.

jamison is not untradeable. many of the teams actually contending for the title are willing to pay the luxury tax (look at what boston did last year) to find the last piece of their puzzle.

We disagree on most points getabigboyoffense. I think Thomas is an OK center. And we couldn’t get anything for him worth having. Better to wait out this year and next than take some questionable guy with a longer contract.

I think Jordan is a good coach, overall. We’ve certainly done better since he brought his offense and the players like playing here and with each other. The main thing is if you fire him who will you hire that’s better? It’s not like Jerry Sloane or Phil Jackson is looking for a job.

I think a much bigger problem is the long-term expensive contracts of Arenas and Jamison. They will severely hamper our ability to sign first class FA’s for years to come. Arenas may never be the same, and I think he only makes us a little better than we are, unless he’s reborn as a PG who makes the whole team better. And Jamison is again a liability on defense, and may well be overprices and over the hill by the time his contract ends.

We certainly had enough desperation trades with the Unseld regime. I think such trades are a step backward in the long run. It’s not like we need one guy to compete for a championship, like when we got Bobby Dandridge.

However, getabigboyoffense, you make an interesting point. With our size down low, and our iffy guard production, maybe we should be working harder to get the ball down low. Go to a more traditional half-court offense in most situations?

Any tactical change would be good to see. Something must be tried. More of the same is a recipe for the lottery.

Luckily for me I could not watch the game live because I had a social function to attend. But I did see the game on tape and the Wiz looked like a D-League team. I would rather our guys lose at the buzzer then not be competitive. That was disgraceful. I think Eddie was in brain lock – determined to have his veterans play their way out of their funk.

I said at the beginning of the year that the key to the Wiz success would be the development of Blatche and Mcgee. That’s because Caron and Antawn can’t be expected to play at the level of last year (and they aren’t). Nor can a guy coming off of open heart sugery be expected to be a competant starting player. That’s not fair for Jordan to ask that of Etan. Maybe he will be more explosive next year, but right now he has no offensive game.

I enjoy getabigboyoffense’s comments and he is parroting what I said last year – to put Jamison at 3 and Butler at 2. The NBA gets bigger every year but the Wiz are determined to go tiny. Let Butler and Jamison post up and McGee and Blatche crash the boards. If Blatche and McGee learn to play together-look out! But that will take time.

I expect Eddie to make some of these moves pretty soon. Otherwise the Wiz will have a 22-60 season.

Tom makes the best points because they are all based on what the situation actually is. Who is going to blame Eddie? I’ve said it before (as Tom has made his point before), take away the starting center and the “star” of any team in the NBA and see how well they do. Here are some examples:

New Orleans without Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler.
Houston without Yao Ming and T-mac.
Boston without Kendrick Perkins and KG/Paul Pierce (pick one).
Orlando without Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu. (or just Dwight since he is the center and the star).

Would you expect those teams to have winning records? I wouldn’t and I’m surprised people are being this hard on the Wizards for bad luck.

Rick I’m of the same opinion as Wizards4Life. It’s 7 games into the season. Caron and Antawn have not played well, but, they are 2 time all stars for a reason. I don’t expect either of them to continue playing at a “rank and file” pace. And if they do Chenier Fan will be right we will be 22 and 60. I don’t see any of the subs able to put up Caron/Antawn kind of numbers when they fianally start to play. And they will.

Sorry GlingGling I disagree. Last year we lost Etan and Gilbert and Caron for significant games and still had a winning record. We can do it again. This team is resilliant just off to a slow start (which is becoming just a little old too)

In 06-07 Etan was arguably already the backup center (less games, less starts, less minutes). Last year we really only lost our star player. The scenario I gave is less applicable to the Wizards of 07-08 because of the ambiguity of the center situation in 06-07. However it still stands strong for the examples I gave. Do you really think David West could carry the Hornets by himself? Would you feel comfortable putting the Rockets solely in the hands of Ron Artest? Or the mac daddy of examples, the Cavs without LeBron.

Our star player and Caron ( who is arguably the “real” star player). let us not forget the labrum tear… of course as always late in the season. Still we found a way to win. I have no doubt Caron and Antawn will find their games. With the growth of everyone else this is not a throw away season by any means.

The Cavs without Lebron are a high school team. That’s why so many teams are wriggling “big bucks” loose for when he becomes a free agent.

as far as the Hornets and Rockets go… I couldn’t care much less lol.

The Wizards have suffered significant player losses over the last 3 years and have still found a way to reach the post season. Why would you assume this year to be any different?

If Gil comes back healthy in a month or two and Brendan comes back a little before the playoffs? things can change fast.

Comment from GlingGling
Time November 16, 2008 at 3:02 AM

I’m not assuming different as much as acknowledging that they are mortal. I agree things can change fast, anyone who watches the NBA with any regularity would agree. What I am doing is defending their losses, which others can’t seem to accept. Instead they are talking about trading players and firing Eddie Jordan (and subsequently Ernie Grunfeld). I don’t really know what else to say, patience?

Gil I will accept as a team changing event. At this point Brendan is out of the picture. He is a very smart player and I wouldn’t be surprised if he just sat out the whole season. But who knows.

Comment from GlingGling

Gil *was* our star player and one can only assume he will be the #1 (or #0) go to guy when he finds his stride again. That is absolutely not to knock Caron. He is my favorite player in the NBA.

The LeBron thing is hilarious. There are gonna be about five teams who offer him max contract. It will be interesting to see what he does.

All right, well thank goodness we’ve figured the whole thing out! I was starting to get worried.

All we need to do is trade Dee Brown for Chris Paul and we’ll be ok. Now, if that doesn’t work we can trade Etan for Dwight Howard and we’ll be ok. If even *that* doesn’t work, then it’s goodbye DeShawn for LeBron and we’ll be ok.

Gilbert may never come back (and play at the level we remember). And even if he does, suggesting that he will fix the team is as ludicrous as suggesting Obama will come in and fix the Economy (no matter how badly we would like to believe it can happen). Just as we all need to take part in resurrecting the economy, the whole organization needs to be part of a winning season. From Gilbert and Caron down to the last practice player. Not to mention, the Polins’s the Eddie’s and the rest of the basketball and non-basketball personnel. And so far I don’t see “it” from anyone. Unless that changes, the addition of Gilbert will be futile.

Here are some wise words from Jamison,

“Nothing is missing; guys have just got to take pride in what they’re doing,” Jamison fumed. “I can take guys playing hard for 48 minutes and the other team finding a way to get it done, but we’ve got to have some pride. To let them play as physical as they did and outrebound us the way they did … that’s not what this team is all about.

“So, nothing is missing – guys just aren’t doing it. Nothing is missing at all – and that comes not from the coaches, not from the front office. I have to get these guys to play night in and night out.”

The best teamwork that I saw, was when songalia was in the game, and it was 56-50. He knew when/where to set picks, where to pass, etc. ALL of this can be covered in practice. Gilbert is one of three all-stars that could make his own offense, when needed. NY can do this, but he’s no Gilbert. The wiz won when Gilbert was out last year because of discipline and everyone knowing their roles. They need to go and check out the films and use that as a starting point. That’s just one of their many options….well today is football day. Peace.
