Dave great to hear from you again. I’m looking forward to tonights game. Sadly I won’t be here for at least the first half. I’ll see if I can catch up and join you all for blogging in the second half.

I’d love to see nick out there and good to hear Antawn is looking at some good minutes tonight. I love Etan, JaVale, and Dray so I don’t mind who starts tonight. It’d be nice to see Juan being productive too. Let’s get out there and have a good game boys.

Man, I have to work tonight and won’t be able to watch the game.

I hope McGee plays well against Tim Duncan.

Also I like Roger Mason but please don’t let him kill us tonight. I have a feeling he is going to drop 20 on us.

Comment from GlingGling
Time October 22, 2008 at 11:15 AM

millie mill, I don’t mind if Roger feeds us threes all night. It’ll be good to see him playing again. Even though he’s “on the other side” now we all still love him (or should!).

In light of the comments that AJ made in Tuesday’s Washington Post article hopefully we will see a motivated team tonight on defense. AJ is also very much concerned about Dray’s up and down play. When I saw Dray against the Hornets he did not seem to have any energy or fire in his game. He seems to conduct himself like he is a old vet. That scares me becuase he needs to get a mean streak and start hitting the boards harder. Does anyone know if Dave Hopla is helping him to develop a couple of pet moves?
I have visions of Elvin’s turnaround jumper back in the day.
It was sad to hear about Nick Weatherspoon. He reminded some of us when he came to the Bullets of a young Bobby Dandridge potential wise.

Comment from GlingGling
Time October 22, 2008 at 1:52 PM

Dray doesn’t need help with his moves. He’s got the moves, I’ve seen the moves, they’re there. And when he wants to finish he can finish. Like you pointed out, however, some nights he seems to simply not have the energy. It’s very strange. I don’t think it’s linked to “maturity”. Even the energy of “immature” or younger players seems to be consistent (but not their performance).

It’s something we’ll have to keep an eye on, many are. Including AJ who is almost always concerned with it.

Comment from Rick
Time October 22, 2008 at 3:12 PM

I think the issue with Andray is linked, in part, to the perceived confidence of the coaching staff. He plays better the more they say they are excited about his play (and when he starts), and worse when they talk about his lack of energy and consistency. I’m not saying that is a legitimate excuse for the young man, just pointing out what seems to be a pattern to me.

Comment from GlingGling
Time October 22, 2008 at 4:05 PM

In that sense I think you’re right. Support and confidence is important for anyone, not just young(er) people.

Comment from rgz
Time October 22, 2008 at 4:38 PM

I think that Andray’s lack of energy on some nights could be due to lack of sleep or proper food or something. His conditioning doesn’t seem at the level where he can play 100% night after night. I don’t think it is just attitude or being more serious.

There is a nice interview of Antonio Daniels, and we are reminded that he won a championship with the Spurs in 1999:

maybe andray is out partying too much and he just needs to find himself the right person.

Well, maybe it is conditioning, rest, diet regarding Blatche. I always thought Haywood’s inconsistent play was due in part to physical reasons. When he finally got himself in condition he was much more consistent.

Bridge, dear, I don’t imagine he needs any help. For that I’ll bet he has plenty of energy.

5 man rotation DJ-Radio? Did you mean 10?

good one DEE. Way to eat up some clock..

Comment from GlingGling
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:38 PM

Bmack, I’m going to disagree. He can put the ball on the floor as much as he wants, he is good at it for a big man and I’ve seen him tear people up last year.

Comment from Wiz034

solid first half of ball by the wizards. need to maintain this intensity/level of play for 24 more minutes..

and glenn… way to make us all feel mushy on the blog.

Comment from GlingGling
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:40 PM

People need to understand this is what Blatche has been doing all of last season. Some games he looks real good and some games he looks real bad. Tonight, unfortunately he looks real bad.

Comment from gbkdc
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:41 PM

Blatche appears to be trying really hard and working hard, but just not having any rhythm.

Comment from Wizards4Life
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:41 PM

Glenn we can come over just make sure Dave gets a good seat so he can see the score board :)

Comment from GlingGling
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:41 PM

To further the problem Blatche can put the ball on the floor, make mid-range shots, post, and drive. He’s good at everything, but not every night.

Comment from Rick
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:42 PM

i dont think Blatche looks that bad. he’s rebounding and playing pretty good D on Duncan. if he makes 2 or 3 of those shots he looks real good.

Nick Young on the other hand does look REAL GOOD. man it’s good to see him out there.

Comment from Wiz034
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:42 PM

Exactly, Just because he’s a big man and can put the ball on the floor doesn’t mean he has to take shots all the time!! When he does and they don’t fall he gets frustrated and taken off his game..like NOW!!!

Comment from CRUNCHTIME RADIO
Time October 22, 2008 at 9:42 PM

GLING GLING I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR SAYING, BUT BLACHE NEEDS TO BE CONSISTANT, IF NOT HE’S JUST A MORE TALENTED KWAME BROWN

Comment from Wiz034

Yeah that’s one of NY1 downfall. He doesn’t play defense. He doesn’t like to pass the ball much either. I remember several games on ESPN where the commentators stated he won’t have too many assists in his career. *LOL*

As the chemistry gets better and the rotations get worked out I think this team, even with our injuries can be as competitive as they were last year.

Great win for the Wiz last night. A confidence builder. Now we need to take that same energy and passion to Cleveland to close out the pre-saeson with a win.
Nick was awesome last night. He seems so confident in his offensive skills. That is a good thing. If he can come off the bench like this during the season we will be saying Roger who?
I am always picking on Songalia but I was impressed with his play last night.
I truly beilieve we have someting special in Javale.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 23, 2008 at 8:05 AM

Whew!

It was a treat to watch that game — especially after all the bad ones we’ve been laying down. Nick and Caron led the way, both having terrific games. I was especially impressed by the right side of Nick’s box: he got 4 rebounds, had only one turnover (and had a steal to balance that) and did not foul. Still no assists. :) Obviously, he shot phenomenally and looks like he can do that all night long.

Etan was solid, Darius was solid, DeShawn was solid. Nice to see that. Pech contributed, but he won’t be much of a weapon until those incessant threes start falling!

It’s very fun to watch JaVale, that’s for sure. But… he turned the ball over 4 times. When you scope out his line, he really didn’t contribute to the win. But, as I said, he is really fun to watch and has mega-potential.

sorry guys i haven’t been blogging like i used to a few years ago when this blog started. its just hard for me to get on when im focused on the game. alot of positive things to look at except the way we ended the game. one thing i noticed from the pistons game i went to and this game is the energy and the commitment on defense. if we play like that i believe we can achieve something big this year.

nick was on fire im not surprised. this is what we expect out of nick. i dont think anyone can guard him with that drive and pull up or fade away. we seen him take it to the hole last season and make some incredible shots.

like ive been saying javale is going to contribute right away. hes shown it in preseason playing about 20 mins a game. you gotta love his confidence, size, athletic ability, and his moves on the offense. expect to see alot of alley oops to him. he’s always telling his teammates to throw it up.

overall last night game was very entertaining on both sides of the floor. i liked how the veterans called out people and i think it really helped. looking forward to smash the one man team cavaliers.

That was a HUGE win last night, despite the fact that is was only the preseason. A few observations after the game:

*JaVale McGee is the REAL deal. Brendan’s injury hurts, but the Wiz will eventually overcome it with Etan and JaVale playing like they did last night.
*Andray is woefully inconsistent. I am a supporter of his, but I do not see him ever being better than a 6th man. You look at JaVale and Andray and you see polar opposites.
*Nick Young is the BOMB! He will be able to help us fill the Gil hole offensively. NY is the 6th man on this team. I would have loved to see him play more with Caron, Antawn and Antonio. Once Gil comes back…WATCH OUT!!!!
*Juan Dixon and Pesh will be playing “Rock, Paper, Scissors” to see who is inactive game-to-game. I went through the numbers and I do not see it working out any other way. With Brendan’s injury and JaVale’s performances, you cannot have him as a regular on the inactive. Once Gil comes back, Juan might as well tape his arse to that inactive seat!
*Finally…the Wiz will be JUST FINE in the absence of Gil and Brendan. This squad has so much depth and chemistry. Folks are going to count us out before we even play, but the youth will serve.

Tom you must not have seen the game. EJ played his starters the entire 1st quarter and JVM, AB, DomM, NY and DeeB the entire 2nd quarter and the reserves maintained the lead even when the Spurs starters returned to the game. J McGee was a big part of that strong 2nd quarter performance, he blocked and changed some shots, made some nice baskets and hustled all over the court.
JaVale played well last night, it’s really exciting to see him play.

I only saw the first half. Based on that I have two observations:

I am much relieved by Young’s play. Makes me feel MUCH better about Mason’s leaving.

Blatche still plays like a rookie. I’ll bet McGee will stop playing like a rookie before Blatche will.
