Here’s a question DJ–

We haven’t yet seen the Dominic McGuire with the improved jumpshot that you guys saw in training camp scrimmages, right? What I saw vs Dallas was the same Dom who gets too deep under the basket and tries to dribble with big guys all around then go up semi-weak to finesse it in and get stripped of the ball. I didn’t even see him attempt any midrange jumpers. And judging by his poor stat output on the offensive end in Memphis, it doesn’t look much differnt.

He does look leaner, and I saw him defending a few positions, plus he’s still the same rebounding prodigy, but we haven’t yet seen any game time benefit to the offseason work on the attack side of the ball. I guess I just want you to reconfirm this isn’t the same Dom you saw in practice. Nerves or something, right?

When I think about it, Dom’s output may be the final deciding factor in the DerMarr vs Juan question actually. Is Juan playing today?

doclinkin, dom’s obviously not put up great #’s so far through 2 preseason games. However, I disagree with a couple things. A few times we’ve seen him get past the defender and get an easy shot that he just hasn’t converted. The one play in particular i remember was when he drove middle and just missed a finger roll. He didnt have the confidence in his offense last year to get to the basket.

You also have to remember. Dom will never be judged by his offense, he will make his living with his defense, he’s got the ability to cover multiple positions which is a huge plus.

I’d hold off judgement on him, remember its two preseason games, and two preseason games where he’s been play out of position a lot of the time at the 2 guard.

The pistons have a strong young second unit. stuckey and maxiel are starters on most teams i think. will be interesting to see how there rotation plays out through the reg. season.

We are going to need a total team effort to win tonight so lets get this mindset from the start. Detroit is loaded with talent and veteran leadership so will they come out fast or slow.Either way we must counter there moves with great ball distibution and efficiency.
Blocks up, fast breaking way up and rebounding will be the tell of the tape. Our resverves did well against Memphis but they aren’t a perennial deep playoff bound team like Detroit! Stay loose and weather the runs this great Detroit team will throw at you and we will have a chance to win at the end! Good Luck!!

is there any word about nick, juan or antwan’s status for tonight’s game? are they all out again?

Comment from AUNDRA
Time October 10, 2008 at 10:38 AM

If management is smart I rest all three until the over seas trip just as a precaution.
The injury bug is out and in full effect so we can’t chance Antwaan ,Nick or Juan.
The degree of error is too high to even think about it right now! We may want to rest
Caron Butler also just to make sure he isn’t overly abused either!

Comment from Rick
Time October 10, 2008 at 10:49 AM

I think Juan needs to play as much as possible in preseason if he hopes to make the team (obviously he shouldn’t play if he’s not healthy). as for the others i can understand keeping them out as a precaution, but i also think it is important for our guys to get into some kind of rhythm playing together.

DJ/Sportzwiz/Anyone – Is CSN on channel 69 in DC???? If so; it’s possible I may get to actually WATCH the One Man Fast Break, the dunkin’ JaVale; the hustling AB; the thrills that each and every Wizard brings!! I’ll keep you all informed….:)

Hi guys…just saying hi and that I’m looking forward to tonight’s game…I’m behind as usual but will read the comments above soon as I can. Briefly…I just want the cuts made so basketball can be the focus; what a player does on the court will decide his spot; as well as his heart, drive, desire, work ethic etc; all exhibited on the court; as far as locker room; it’s important for chemistry; just how much is for coaches to decide; thank goodness its’ not up for me to decide!! I’ll be back later; and thanks again for welcoming me. Who do the Pistons bring that I should prior recearch??

Tonight’s should be a could test for the Wiz in different ways. We will see either the team that played Dallas or the one that played Memphis. It will be interesting to see how Javale does against Kwame. Will Dray continue play well. There is the Sophomore matchup between Nick and Stuckey. Will Dermarr stand out again?
Will we play better defense?
For me I would like to see more offensive production from Deshawn.
Say what you want, he has to help step up offensively when AJ, Caron and Gil are not in the lineup. We just can’t depend on the young guy’s to find their way right away. The only way the young guys are going to get better is they have to play more.

Comment from SportzWiz

slWiz I do not know, but I think it’s like 29. CSN+ might be 69.

Comment from Rick
Time October 10, 2008 at 3:05 PM

Maxiel tore up the Wiz in one of their games last season (i think he had 28 points). So he will likely come in with a lot of confidence. Shutting him down (along with Stuckey) should be a priority for the second unit defensively.

Scoring will be tough to come by with our injuries (Gil, Antawn and Caron represent 60+ points per game), so i think a balanced attack on offense will be necessary.

But defense is the key. We don’t have the (healthy) personnel right now to outscore opponents.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 10, 2008 at 3:06 PM

SportsWiz — “Dom will never be judged by his offense, he will make his living with his defense”

I think it’s too early to conclude that; Dom has good form on his shot along w/ the athleticism to get his own shot. He is *raw* offensively, that much is true. But, I have hopes that he’ll develop as an offensive player — in addition to “making a living w/ his defense” wch is certainly not a bad thing either!

Comment from SportzWiz
Time October 10, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Sorry I shouldnt say NEVER. Your right definitely the wrong word. I definitely think he can become a nice offensive player, but let me say that when he’s out on the floor he wont be one of the first options on offense right now that’s just not his game.

So jumping to conclusions on those stats isn’t the right way to go about things. Watch him on defense, and realize he has a nice evolving offensive game that might surprise people.

Comment from Rick
Time October 10, 2008 at 3:34 PM

When Caron goes out, you might not see much of a drop off on defense with Dom, but Dom must at least establish himself as a threat on offense so that other teams can’t lay off him and double up on our other scorers.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 10, 2008 at 3:36 PM

Isn’t tonight’s game on comcast? The Dallas game was (don’t know about the Memphis game).

Comment from SportzWiz
Time October 10, 2008 at 3:41 PM

No comcast tonight. On the top right of this page is the preseason schedule.

Rick, I think Dom has enough offense that he can make you pay if you double someone else. His jumper is much improved (i know i keep harping on it, just wait.) and he can put the ball on the floor and is much more confident than last year in that regard.

slwiz, try Comcast Sportsnet’s website, and then you can choose the Washington, DC market, then you can choose Wizards, and it should tell you the channels. But they are different for sub-markets, too, if I’m not mistaken. In Alexandria, CSN is on 251. Good luck.

Comment from BruceO

btw linton was making too many rookie mistakes and was not poised. Dermarr still has to show me what he brings that we don’t have already. You may argue that hes a better pick than Juan but he hasnt shown me anything yet, but I didnt get a chance t watch game two. I think my arguments towards Juan staying is he’s all but moved in. We have loyalty to him and we wouldnt cut him with his moving downtown already, he most likely has been confirmed to stay. Dee as well they keep raving about which I believe the team isnt used to playing with him yet at that tempo due to all the turnovers we’ve been making.

Comment from Rook
Time October 10, 2008 at 6:54 PM

BruceO – here’s what I wrote on Wizards Insider about Dermarr vs Juan – and what each brings:

After reading about Dee Brown’s performance in Training Camp, watching him live in the scrimmage, watching one Preseason game (Detroit) and listening to another (Memphis) – I think he’s earned a roster spot. – and that does not bode well for Juan Dixon.

If, indeed, Dee Brown has won a spot, that leaves only 1 roster spot open for:
Linton Johnson
Dermarr Johnson
Juan Dixon

Dixon may have the edge, because of his familiarity with the Princeton Offense, and the fact that Gilbert spoke up for him in the off-season… but Dermarr Johnson has outplayed Juan in Training camp.

Dermarr has also done extremely well in the two Preseason games… with 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and a block in 17 minutes against Detroit – and 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks in 23 minutes against Memphis.

Whereas Juan Dixon has not played (injured calf).

Both Dixon and Johnson could help the Wizards by bringing bench scoring, but
Dermarr Johnson brings some things that Juan Dixon cannot. He’s 6′9″. He can play multiple positions (SG and SM, and in certain situations PF). He rebounds well, and plays solid perimeter defense. (Juan gambles). He can post up, and stroke from three.

I think he’ll make the final roster decision very hard on Eddie.

Comment from Rook
Time October 10, 2008 at 6:57 PM

We all know that both Dixon and Johnson could help the Wizards by bringing bench scoring, but Dermarr Johnson brings some things that Juan Dixon cannot. He’s 6’9″. He can play multiple positions (SG and SM, and in certain situations PF). He rebounds well, and plays solid perimeter defense. (Juan gambles). They can both stroke from three – both have remarkably similar 3-point shooting percentages, 2-point % AND Free Throw percentages…. but Dermarr Johnson has a better career PER (18.0 vs 11.25 for Juan).. and a higher True Shooting Percentage (57% vs 51% for Juan).

Dermarr Johnson, at 6’9″ can post up smaller guards, whereas Juan Dixon will be POSTED up by larger guards.

If McGuire continues to shoot poorly during the Preseason, it would make another strong point in the case for releasing Juan because Dermarr Johnson can play the Small Forward position and could backup Caron Butler.

If Nick Young doesn’t take the next step, does Eddie really want 6’0″ Dee Brown and 6’2″ Juan Dixon as his second team guards? Perhaps ANOTHER reason to keep Dermarr.

Comment from Rook
Time October 10, 2008 at 6:59 PM

So the question about keeping Dermarr vs keeping Juan Dixon is not so cut and dried.

Comment from BruceO
Time October 10, 2008 at 7:07 PM

dermarr doesnt play defense that well you know. His known skills are offensively. Ordinarily I can see Dermarr possibly being picked ahead of Juan but its hard for me to envision that scenario where we cut juan. Our organization has a history of doing right by their players. We don’t screw our players out of contracts or put pressue unfairly on them. We’ve kept our word as an organization which some other organizations don’t do (clippers). If juan is here and intending on getting a place downtown and looking forward to the season I suspect he knows something. Add the fact that Gil said he wants him around because he’s one of the top flat out scorers makes it an additional plus. Tom posted up numbers to compare how Dermarr numbers wise is better than Juan. I didn’t look at the numbers well but I do know Juans numbers don’t reflect who he is. Remember he’s had that stint in Portland, Toronto and Detroit where they didn’t let him just play his game. Those numbers are deceptive regardless of its it per or not. Because not all minutes are the same. Two points in clutch is more important that two points when you are 20 pts behind or ahead. Also the game scenarios might require certain needs from the players and this could range from score as fast as possible to controlling the clock. Lets let Juan play and watch Dermarr some more. Nothing against Dermarr I did pick him out as most likely to stay amongst the trio of SF/Pf signees

He had 6 rebounds against the Grizzlies (2 offensive); and 3 against the Mavericks….
He’s got 2 rebounds so far tonight.

Not bad for your 6 foot nothing Point Guard.

So far, sounds like a couple of players stood out:

Butler with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal (stuffing the stat sheet again)

Pecherov was 2 of 2 – both 3-pointers – and banged inside for 3 rebounds in only 6 minutes

and although Linton Johnson and Dee Brown didn’t have great stats – defensively they both were disruptive.

Blatche has the ability to hit from the outside, but I noticed a couple times in the Dallas game, when he attempted from a distance, his body was moving too much and he wasn’t going straight up and down.

Great point about Butler letting the game come to him…..he’s very smooth and composed in that manner.

I’ve often wondered why he doesn’t try out his mid-range post game more…to get him free for a turnaround J (usually in the baseline area), or to force the double so he can make the pass.

Wow…Andray Blatche’s fouling problem is really concerning.

Against the Griz the other night: AB picked up foul #1 with 2:46 left in the first. He picked up foul #4 with 8:02 left in the 2nd. 4 fouls in 6:44.

And now he fouls out in only 22 minutes of game action tonight?

I thought that the strength he built over the summer would help to limit his fouls. What gives guys? We’re going to need him on the court this year? How does he improve in this area?

I think fouling is partially about habit. We’ll see where Blatche goes with it. I’m not in the least bit concerned.

Comment from Rook
Time October 10, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Truth –

We can live with him picking up 4or 5 fouls per night, being the backup at Center and Power Forward – and perhaps playing 25 minutes a night…. but we can’t afford to have him fouling out in 15-20 minutes of play.

I think he’s made strides with his positioning, and strength, but he keeps reaching….
those extra ticky-tack fouls are the ones he needs to cut out…

With 20 turn overs – the Wizards are lucky to be still in the game….

One reason they are, is that they are holding the Pistons to only 37% shooting. and Detroit has not capitalized on their foul shots (69%)

On Fouls:

Yea, but if Andray happens to pick up a couple silly ones early, his defensive mentality will change, even if subconsciously, knowing he has some under his belt…..we do not want that.

It’s said that Dom isn’t really as offensive bound as Caron is, but it kinda evens out because Dom is great in getting rebounds, whereas Caron – - I won’t say that he don’t get as many, but that’s Dom’s strength over Caron…

Caron – and rebounding…

He plays the passing lanes more than McGuire, and leaks out on the break…. that would tend to lead to fewer Defensive rebounds…

Whereas McGuire hangs back and goes after those D-rebounds.

Some have been down on Pech…..I don’t know why…kid has a long way to go and we should give him more of a chance.

But one thing I’ve noticed from Day 1, in addition to his trey ball, is that he’s never afraid to stick his nose in the paint for a board…..but as Dave and Glenn mention, it doesn’t usually happen on the offensive end because he’s a floater.

Guys do you think that we can keep Juan, DeMarr and Dee, and maybe someone else will not make the roster?

Jeff – everyone else on the roster has a guaranteed contract, EXCEPT Juan Dixon (partial guarantee, but he must make the team), Dee Brown (partial guarantee, but he must make the team), Dermarr Johnson (non-guaranteed Training Camp contract) and Linton Johnson (non-guaranteed Training Camp contract).

The way Dee Brown has played – you have to expect that he’ll make the team.

That means that 3 players are fighting for the final roster spot.

We may agree to disagree on this one, I realize what it looks like on paper. However if Ernie and Eddie feel as though these 3 players are needed. Maybe a trade or something could be in the works with someone else. All I am saying IMO the best players period will be on the roster.

KENAN
I would have to agree but I know Tom Mandel has all the statiscal info to disagree but I have to go with my gut feeling on this one! He “Juan” nows the system better than any of the outstanding gentlemen and he has a ace in the hole “Agent Zero” on his side! Now back to the Detroit game and how we could have won the game even though we were very short handed. First of all we have to play better when we have a veteran team because they been through the tough WARS before. Second we keep shooting ourselves in the foot with all these turnovers. The Lack Of Turnovers was the one thing that keep us with the New Orleans and Bostons of the NBA and you know what they were pretty dam good! Thirdly our FG Field Goal Percentage was awful at 32.9% which is not up to standards however we were short handed and if it seems I’m beating a dead horse then Bloggers let me know because the last thing I will want to become is a KILLER OF DREAMS like Tom Mandel! Finally if you feel you can shoot the 3 pointer then atleast make 1 out of 3 or get closer like a dunk attempt to help the team score more efficiently.Thats it we did well in the freethrows and rebounding and that I am happy so work out the kinks and go overseas and start anew! Good Luck!

Now, Aundra, don’t call me bad names.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 11, 2008 at 7:55 AM

If I were making this final personnel decision, I’d probably keep DerMarr over Juan and Linton. But, of course many things will enter into it that I don’t know about — both on the basketball and on the business side. But just in terms of helping us win more games (and keep Aundra’s dream alive), DerMarr seems like the best choice.

Was the interview with Ernie on radio? Or is it on the Web? I didn’t seem to see it at the Wiz site.
