3:07 AM…Eastern Time…Dave Johnson checking in…just talked to Antawn Jamison on the way up to the room..says his right knee is a little sore….again it is being called a strained right knee . He is walking around and expressed confidence after the game.,..in fact the locker room after the game he said at that moment it wasn’t sore…when my Wizards audio report is posted you will be able to hearhis comment. Anyway great first nigth on the BLOGCAST….tonight’s game starts at 8:00 PM Eastern and can be heard on 570 AM and 12 60 AM in Washington and 1370 AM in Baltimore and by clicking on the linkthat will be put at the top of the BLOG bfeore game time
6:55 PM Dave Johnson and Glen Consor checking in from Fed Ex Forum……Antawn Jamison had an MRI today..it was negative so that is a positive.. and they are calling it a contusion….
As for Brendan Haywood… he will have surgery…I have not been given a timetable…but obviously that hurts….
7:00PM….starters tonight…I know the front court will be Domenic McGuire Andray Blatche and Etan Thomas…Caron Butler will take the night off..nothing wrong…just second of back to back
Jamison Update: Wizards forward Antawn Jamison has been diagnosed with a right knee contusion after an MRI today revealed no other damage. No timetable has been set for his return, but Jamison is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.

thats good to hear antawn was walking around and it was just sore. i hope its nothing serious. other then the loss there were some good things. blatche continue his improvement and his play from summer league right when first tspped on the court. dee brown aka speedy gonzalez looks good at the point. mcgee has alot of promising. just excited to see him now that he might get more playing time with brenden probably missing some time. i actaully like demar. with his size and athletic abilities in a guard position can be a good thing for us.

It is really sad about Brendan. I am so glad Antawn’s injury is not terribly serious. I am incredulous this morning about our team’s string of injuries. I am trying to keep the faith. I’m a die-hard fan so I will be watching no matter what. But can’t we ever catch a break around here?????

Sounds like Antawn will be fine. Brendan is a big loss. That’s too bad, maybe it will give Etan and McGee a chance to improve their games and collectively improve our center position for next season.
I’m with you gbkdc, superfans don’t jump ship. I’ll be doing what I can to watch every game this season.

with the news that brendan will likely be out for quite some time it will be really key for dray to step up his play this year. let’s hope his play of last night is something we’ll see consistently out of him.

what scares me about nick’s knee injury is the mystery surrounding it. nobody seems to know what the deal is… it was reported in the post that it was bothering him all training camp, but really flared up after the scrimmage. not sure what that means
Comment from Rick
Time October 8, 2008 at 6:42 PM
i havent heard about brendan, however, given that one doctor suggested surgery that will keep him out for 4-6 months, it is unlikely that the other one will say he’s fine. in the best case, you can imagine him being out at least a month or 2.

on one hand i understand sitting caron out. it says several things:
1) not going to risk another little injury
2) the little injuries that we do have are no big deal, it’s still pre-season and i dont even need to play my healthy starters
3) make sure the guys fighting for spots and time get a chance to play
however, on the other hand, if we really are going to start the season so short handed, i think that the guys who will be playing the majority of minutes need to get into a rhythm playing with each other. and that means andray (and etan?) need to get into a groove with caron, deshawn, etc…

Evening all!! wasn’t AB consistency an issue in summer league and training camp? That he had flashes of what he can do? I kept saying again each time, he’d score; and didn’t he switch hands in mid-leap. This player will really be fun and athletic to watch…
Even though I can’t remember everything I love this live blog and being involved. Thanks again for the format; I do enjoy the audio interviews, game notes, photos, and I see an Interview with NY and his documentary; got ta check that out. He’s out for all preseason; if that’s the case will he and Gil go to Europe; or stay with trainers to get up to speed and rehab? Man they will be missed.

Concern for Tawn was very clear on the blog last night!! Dave going to locker room after game and getting info was so kind. Glen spoke of Dave’s labored breathing to get back to the live feed to share the update, that was so wonderful of you DJ, your worry and concern and thinking of the fans too and Antawn. Your hearts are all full Wiz fans and media people!!! So thankful to hear the MRI is good and postive!!

Last long comment! coming up to speed is all! I wish I could hurry up and get to speed with the players. I barely know their postions. But with Tawn out, and Haywood out it’s Etan in the center. Wow, his 17 month comeback is worth reading. Then Dom and Dray at forwards, with CB3 out for a rest. And then Deshawn and AD at guards. Then off bench is Dee and Dermarr at guards; maybe DeMarr at 2 or 3 spot; then I’m not sure about Pesh and Songalia position; I think they are forwards, JaVale at center; okay whose name did I misspell and put out of spot!! LOL Getting there. Did I miss anybody healthy; injured are Gil, Nick, Juan, Antawn. I hope all these injuries heal but didn’t coach say something about they were going so hard and intense in training camp that he wasn’t surprised they were beat up a bit?

On the young Bigs. Look any chance the Wiz have at a championship comes with the development of our young talent. I don’t guess we’d challenge this year even if fully healthy. So extra experience now helps us get closer to the goal more quickly. I’m looking forward to watching them develop. Okay we’ll lose a ton of frontcourt defense, and so yeah we’ll lose a ton period, but still I’m just looking for flashes and improvement. And better consistency out of Blatche, who’s ready to put up numbers

TV. When the picture is synched right I’ll even turn Buck and Phil off and listen to the radio. Well okay, mostly if I’m cooking dinner or something and can’t watch the screen the whole time. But still. The radio feed is often a half second ahead of the TV, so you get warning of a good play and can glance up to catch it. Neat trick.

i will blog to him this; great comment he loves to hear these things; it just makes him work harder…the more you challenge him the more he gives of himself…and this will help the team to do the same…they will do their best…it’s really fun to watch…we in illinois had dee, deron, luther, roger, james…it was so cool and now we will have the same with wiz…i just don’t know the names real well yet; but i will….

On the realgm.com wiz forum we used to have an active chat. That was great. It would be fine if the Wiz site decided to run a chat engine of some sort. Maybe a pain for SportzWiz to set up, but still fast interactive blather could be fun. This is the same basic thing, but yeah, you have to refresh all the time to see anything new. There’s a slower call/response thing.

Hey Grif:
Blatche started strong, wiz had no other options and couldn’t make a shot fell behind. Dee and JaVale were inserted and defense and hustle fought them back into the lead. Now it’s halftime. That’s the capsule summary.

As to Dray, his conditioning problem, I am increasingly sure, has to do with his wind. I don’t think he has lung capacity to match his big body. But, that doesn’t explain the fouls.
Interesting to see Dom at the 2; not so surprising. But, he is going to have to learn to make some shots!
If Nick’s injury is more serious than first thought, we may see DerMarr on the roster instead of Juan. Size and versatility. Dang, tho, we need our guys to stay healthy! We’ve got 3 out of 5 starters down right now!

Problem with Dallas, Jason Kidd knows the Princeton sets, and the team is implementing Princeton principles under Carlisle this year, so they’ve been ready waiting for it. Turnovers killed the Wiz, who were adjusting to new roles with Jamison out of the line-up (not to mention Haywood).

Everyday I just focused on working as hard I could, doing everything right, and learning as much as I could.”
I keep asking him how he wants to improve so I liked that comment. He’s working on his flexibility so his body will jump and move higher and faster.
Game notes say Dee’s best rebounding game with Utah was 5; that was against Houston Rockets on 4/18/07
I’m not sure about his best rebounding game in turkey; I don’t think I have that one at my finger tips but it would be interesting to research. I did notice at summer camp; after that technical foul call and the game was so close, Dee came in and got a tip, and the game went into OT if I recall correctly. So him being close to the basket might help a great deal.

Looks like Eddie Jordan has used several different lineups….
We’ve seen a BIG lineup (Thomas, Pech, McGee at SF, Dermarr Johnson, and Daniels)….
and we’ve also seen a quicker lineup (McGee, McGuire, Dee Brown, Linton and Dermarr Johnsons)….
Eddie may have much more flexibility this year to match up with different opponents.

1-6 of shots is a little low for him; usually 2-6 or 3-6; but he’s working hard on his other game; rebounds and assists and pushing the ball; his jumper is improving but it’s not dropping tonight; don’t know why; he could be rushing it; I wish i had the visual…sigh

doc – with Haywood out, I think Dermarr Johnson brings something new….
Juan’s offense and quickness is duplicated on the team already (NY & Dee Brown) – and with Dee Brown’s fabulous Training Camp, and his play in these first 2 pre-season games, I think he’s cemented a spot on the roster. That leaves Juan in a precarious position.
Dermarr brings great size, good 3-point shooting, AND experience, AND the ability to play as many as 3 positions…. In my opinion, he brings more to the roster than Juan (scoring, steals)…

Pech was better in the Dallas game… 12 points (4-10, 2-3 3pointers), 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal.
I watched that game, and he didn’t seem to be favoring the ankle… moved well, banged inside pretty good… On his 3-pointers, I’ve noticed that if he takes his time, he makes them…. the one he missed last night (and 2 of his other long 2-pointers) he looked rushed; like he was hurrying the shot.
He just needs to slow down a bit…. let the game come to him.. he’s got a nice stroke.

I think some jump shooters have that problem of rushing their shot; or being rushed. I know coming around screens; squaring up, and knocking the jumper is a challenge to lots of shooter. It’s a challenge and takes lots of time in the gym and to have a good shooting coach help you with fundamentals?

GlingGling – yes, you’re right, when he was matched against Nowitzki, he looked slow….
but that’s why McGee is so intriguing….
If you have a 7ft guy that can hit the mid-range jumper, shoot 3-pointers, drive to the basket, AND post up….. you’ve got something… AND Nowitzki is one of the few in the League like that… Against Pecherov, Nowitzki had his way…
But like I said, against 2nd stringers (Rhodes, and even Brandon Bass), Pech did fine. (Most of Bass’ points and damage came against Blatche and Songaila)…

Im looking at the statline and Javale looks like he had a good game and played the most minutes. I think EJ knows haywood is out and has to see what the rook can do in heavy minutes. javale might be thrown into the fire sooner than expected and could be surprising for a rookie raw as he is.

Hey, don’t get me wrong GrifonRacing – I don’t think Pech is anywhere close to contributing this year…. Perhaps in the second half… but I wouldn’t expect to see him getting more than garbage and spot minutes most of the year.
The Wizards are pretty deep with Big guys along the front line – and I expect Blatche, Thomas, Jamison, and Songaila to get most of the minutes…. although McGee may fight his way in there for a share of the Center or PF time.
But, unlike others, I don’t think Pech is a bust. Like McGee, he’s got a unique skillset for a 7footer; and I think he’s going to be an interesting player for the Wiz in the next few years…. I can see him developing into a High-post Center in the Princeton Offense – especially if he can improve his passing skills.

Dee had a great deal to do with that…i say again…he knows the jumper is critical…he’s trying…but coach brought him in for other things believing dee could improve that jumper and i can quarentee you that dee will be in the gym first thing shooting. MY guess is 500 maybe 700; i’ll have to ask him in his q and A.

I know he doenst like playing rookies but if he can come in and block shots and finesse his way to the hoop and make athletic slams and put backs along with a decent shot, why not play him. Nick Young was a little erratic and there were reasons for him not playing alot last year early, but with haywood out, javale should be the backup center and let blatche be a mismatch to power fowards
