Game Day Dallas
8:00 AM.. Dave Johnson checking in …Here it is our first Game Day Blog. Here’s how it works. You can listen to yours truly and Glenn Consor on radio and online…and Steve Buckhantz and Phil Chenier will be on Comcast SportsNet…..On the radio dial it is ESPN 980 AM in Washington and inBaltimore FOX 1370 AM SportsRadio…..On yesterday’s blob I noticed questions about online listening…my understanding is it is FREE and we will have a link on the web site and on top of the BLOG….And we will doing a radio/online post game show that you can call into….Looking forward to tonight…especially seeing the return of Etan Thomas….check back in a couple of hours
Update: Hey everyone, SportzWiz checking in. The listen live link is above. Unfortunately there’s a chance that tonight’s game and only tonight’s game won’t be available for the local feed which means you’ll have to listen to the Dallas announcers. We contacted the league this morning about it when we saw the error and it might be too late to change. So you can check it later tonight, but there’s a good chance you will have to listen to the Dallas broadcast. Again this should NOT be an issue in the future. If you are in the DC area you can listen to Dave and Glenn on 980 in DC and 1370 in Baltimore.
8:20 PM Eastern Dave and Glenn here in Dallas…broadcast starts at 8:30…i hope you will be able to catch us online as well…Eddie Jordan’s interview starts our broadcast…going to see a lot of the second unit guys get time…but no Juan Dixon tonight because of right calf injury and no Nick Young banged his left knee last week in practice

on last night’s JEOPARDY episode:
Category: SPORTS NICKNAMES for $1000
Answer: “The NBA’s Agent Zero, AKA Hibachi, AKA The Black President.”
i went nuts cuz we all know who that is.. except the 3 ppl playing didn’t know… pissed me off.
anyway, game night tonight. this is the year for DC sports. skins are playing great, caps are defending SE division champs, and minus the aforementioned agent zero, we’re as healthy and deep as ever. i think the reserves really grew this offseason with the vegas summer league, and that will play a big part in giving our starters (who i assume will be daniels, stevenson, haywood, butler, and jamison again) some key rest as we progress through the season.
looking forward to posting on the blog tonight. great to be back everybody!!!

DC United is playing horrible….and lets not mention the Nats…
But the three teams that I care about the most:
1. Redskins
2. Wizards
3. Caps
Are REALLY REALLY great…

Thanks. (see last comments in countdown is on), I will share this with those in our area. This is big and huge for us in Illinois!! I noticed WindyCity on the blog; hope they are just one of many that will find this live blog tonight!! WindyCity is obviously from northern Illinois so there may be more I don’t know of that isn’t as obvious; and to all I say Welcome as the local live bloggers are welcoming me!!
So many different match ups the coaches and fans would like to hear, watch. Dave and Glen on radio and Steve and Phil on TV. I don’t think Phil had much to do with live training camp? In the front lines I mean? Is he mainly more behind the scenes? Will Steve and Phil sit next to you radio guys? How do you communicate with each other so fans with TV and fans with radio get involved and benefit from both types of media? Or is it strictly separate at this time?
Just for fun! Sports city rivalry!! Sporting News; today’s online edition:
“Readers give us their picks …No doubt, it’s Boston As much as it pains me to say it, there is no doubt that Boston was the top sports city in 2008. The Red Sox won their second World Series in four years after going 86 without one. The Celtics won the NBA title in dominant fashion. The Patriots came within 39 seconds of a perfect season and the Bruins had a successful year making the playoffs and taking Montreal to seven games in the first round of the NHL playoffs. There’s no doubt that the dominant sports city of 2007-08 has been Boston.
Andrew Lestingi
Valley Stream, NY”
I never knew who Agent Zero, AKA Hibachi was until my reading summer reading and I didn’t know who AKA The Black President was until Tag Flips comment. I now know and will always remember so if ever those nicknames come up on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”; I’ll win that question:)

Also from Sporting News online edition: “Those funny T-Mobile ads with Sir Charles and D-Wade? You’ll be seeing more of them, SportsBusiness Daily reports, as part of the mobile phone company’s multi-year extension of its partnership with the NBA and WNBA, which now includes the D-League”.
This might be of interest to “numbers and statistical” fans like Tom? How’s the travel coming along? Did your begging help; or was it the flowers? LOL…
Steve, more of Sir Charles then?…

Do I dare say I don’t know who Elvin Hayes is? Yes, because it’s okay to not know. But the comments about Dee’s jersey number; well, in Dee’s life he IS #11; always was and always will be; but he’s not got it in Washington. Why? I assumed another player had it or now that I’m reading about “The Big E” is the number 11 retired? “Poor Dee, Elvin Hayes stole his jersey number for good!”?
Elvin sounds like a great player who ALL players could learn from; pride, demand for respect, work ethic, great rebounder, shooter and an All-Star for his first twelve seasons. Wonderful example for any to follow. True, a difficult time growing up. Rough around the edges in the league with other players and coaches. So continuing to not know, now that’s what would be wrong and sad. Hats off to you Bullets legend and may your life in your later years be full as even now fans are learning from you!! If Dee has to give up his favorite number for your solid examples, so be it!! And if Dee is asked if he’s happy with #17; he’ll be the first to say “sure!! And hey, the #17 and the Wizard colors will begin to show up in Illinois soon. Can’t wait for that to happen!!

slwiz, did you get into NBA/Wizards because of Dee? Nothing wrong with that. You seem so new to the league, but not to Dee.
There are some good “commercials” here that reference Gilbert’s nicknames.
With your tenacity you should be up to speed in no time. Hanging out here doesn’t hurt either. Also IL time zone is central, so yes 7:30.

All your frat bloggers will be right here giving you play by play so don’t bother turning on the cable because the color commentary will be fast and furious.
Etan lets start with a prayer and then just let the animal instinct come out that you have been holiding in for a year. I expect the starters to get no more then 22 minutes and then it on for the YOUNG VETS to be to get it on! I will be watching and blogging the hold game and the after game press conference to hear the winners call! I’m predicting a great game from the Little Three but the Dermar Johnson is the guy I think will standout in the crowd tonight! So play to win and lets get it on!!!

Could you tell me in how many hours the game will start?(should be either in 5,5h or 3,5h?) Gotta set my alarm right, don’t want to miss the game~
(if someone like bex from germany reads this, does the game start 4.30am oder 2.30am? sport1 said the first, but on another page i read 2.30..dunno
)

My clock says it’s 4:55PM (eastern) and if the game starts at 8:30 then the game will start in 3.5h. If you’re in Germany which is GMT+1. Then you are six hours ahead of the Eastern Time zone (GMT-5). So the game would start at 2.30am in GMT+1. Hope that helps.

So many great comments; so sorry to the ones who can’t come or will come in after tip-off!! or have a wee bit of trouble with the multi-tasking!! LOL I know I felt bad missing out on the Friday scrimmage of training camp!!
Just clicked on the link to Elvin Hayes and it says in huge font “Retiring a Legend, Elvin Hayes” so my guess was right…do I get a prize…LOL I’ll check it out closer SportzWiz, thanks. So how do you fit in with dj and glen? Sometimes I see you start the blog; sometimes them?
Enjoy the game grifonRacing. Anyone!! I’m interested in Dee’s turnovers as he’s pushing the ball up the court. And the shot clock. During summer league he consistantly picked up his man in the backcourt; not real pressure but he bothered the dribbler; so how far down does the clock go; meaning how much time does the Maverick offense have to work with. 20/25 sec or less? And it’s a 35 sec shot clock?
Comment from GlingGling
Time October 7, 2008 at 8:02 PM
slwiz there are really only two time rules to think about when bringing the ball up and getting a shot off. The ball must pass half court within eight second of the inbound pass. I saw AD cause the opponent to do this once or twice last year. The shot clock is 24 seconds. I’ll be interested in seeing if Dee can really help shave off 1-3 of those seconds by bothering people way up the court. Some guys just don’t like being bothered before half court. Other guys it doesn’t matter, AD for instance can effortlessly shake just about any half court pressure one on one.

It’s not only the bothering but even the extra seconds of keeping the sets from forming; or if Dee or other guards can keep the dribbler from seeing the cuts; or seeing period; etc is what I’m thinking as well. couldn’t remember the shot clock at 24 and thanks for the reminder of 8 to cross the time line…

i donno maybe its just me but i dont like him playing the two… he doesnt seem to have the ball handleing for the two.. i know we play a two gaurd system but they guys always say they can play that way cuz they can shoot, so gil can slide to the “2″ when he’s hott, and deshawn can bring it up same when he gets hott or when AD wants to take it in. but lets say deshawn gets hott and mcguire has to call the plays to 2 free him up for a 3 or get everyone in the right position to put them in the right set… i donno i would rather see caron at the two and mgcuire get teh ball at the wing, but as much as it might be just because nick and juan are out i did see it at the scrimage as well so im just wondering if they are thinking about it so that he can guard the 2 and deshawn the point to stop penetration but i think its too risky cuz it will disturb the offense.. dave what do you think?

transition defense has not been good either….ricklevinenyc you make as good point…but the two are linked…poor balance on offense then leads to poor balance on defense

it sounds like they have flashes of what they practiced but don’t have it consistant but having 3 out must have something to do with it

dave if they put haywood on the IR will that free up a spot? only cuz if its the back end of that 4-6months that would be basicly 90pecent of the season with us going deep into the playoffs

the stat lines from starters: stevenson, daniels, and thomas are a bit disappointing. do we know if nick young is going to play tomorrow night?
Comment from ricklevinenyc
Time October 7, 2008 at 11:25 PM
ouch about haywood. unless thomas can really get up to speed quick, does that make blatche the starting center? at least mcgee showed that he can pick up some minutes. but man-oh-man, injuries are really decimating this team over the last few years.

whew. i just heard good news on sportsnite… eddie said that tawn is walking around and is in good spirits. injury isn’t as serious as it looked, and that it may just be a hyperextended patellar tendon or something like that. but so far no ligament damage.
on a more down note, brendan will likely be having surgery and he could be missing most of the season.
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time October 7, 2008 at 11:47 PM
We seem to have some kind of curse? The very first game and we hear Brendan may be out 4 to 6 months. Then we SEE Antawn’s knee buckle under him. What the heck is Next?
Ok enough of that!
I thought Andray played really well at times. Dee looked like he fit his billing. That guy is quick. He can run the offense and pass pretty darn well too. I didn’t understand Dominic at the 2 but I guess that was because Nick tweaked his knee? He certainly was easily exploited there. I really like Demarr. For his size that kid can move and covers the passing lanes well. Everyone was “clanking” them so who really knows what his shot is like. Pesh didn’t impress me much. Almost like a fish swimming in jello. JaVale is gonna be a very very good one. Wow that kid is gonna be Something. Something I didn’t realize until tonight…The Kid has Attitude!

Am I hearing that Brendan is out 3 months? Yikes!! Hope that’s not true.
Only one game, and the starters didn’t play much (nor very well either — except for Caron), so nothing to take away from having lost.
Dom’s line says he was 0-6 — *that* I don’t like to see. Was he missing jumpers? Or…?
Looks like Pech played quite well. Shot well and got 7 rebounds in 23 minutes (very good!). Ditto JaVale’s performance, though erratic in his case (1-4 from the line and 3 fouls in 12 minutes).
One thing I liked in Dee’s performance especially — he grabbed 3 boards. Probably a tribute to being very quick and strong, even though small. If he can rebound like a bigger guard he will be a big help.

What a let-down. Back to reality. I guess we still aren’t world beaters. I was so deflated I turned it off at half time. My observations based on one half:
Andray Blatche had NO FOULS AND NO TURNOVERS in the half and scored like an all-star. So much for any competition between he and Songaila for time. Songaila didn’t do much but foul. So….now the competition is between Songaila and Pecherov for time at PF. That’s an important competition, since it looks like Blatche will be getting most of his minutes at C for 3-4 months, and may end up getting minutes backing up Butler if McGuire can’t shoot in prime time.
Sorry, but it’s time for Linton Johnson to go home.
