Hey guys just walked into the gym, practice isnt starting for a little while but that doesnt mean the Wizards aren’t out in full force already. Linton Johnson is working with Ed Tapscott on his drive and pullup game, Antonio Daniels and Juan Dixon are working out on the far court and Nick Young, DerMarr Johnson, DeShawn Stevenson and Caron Butler are working with Dave Hopla on their shooting from beyond the arc.

I am curious about Linton and Dermarr?

Hey Dave…what’s the word on Caron Butler’s hip?
Obviously, we would have heard more by now if last year’s labral tear was holding him back, but is it something they are monitoring? Or is he 100% past that?
With missing significant time in the last couple of seasons….in 06-07, he had that freak hand injury, but last year dealt with a wrist, a knee, and if I can recall correctly, a hamstring (in addition to the hip)…..what has he done to enhance his durability?
I’m aware that Caron started doing yoga, how much does he feel that has helped now that he’s testing his body more in camp?

Im curious to know how Juan Dixon has been playing during camp so far. Is he shooting the ball well? seem to remember the offence?
thank you!

Truth, he’s done a lot of band work and yoga as you stated to strengthen his core. He says he feels much quicker and just in absolutely great shape! We’ll see if we can get you anything else but I haven’t heard anything.
By the way when are jake and prada joining us
. Both of your sites do a great job.
Fyi. The rest of the squad just walked in and Pech is shooting in front of me, he just made 10 of 11 jumpers from the baseline and elbow. Boy can shoot!

Hey Dave and Sportzwiz:
I love the job you guys have been doing, letting us know how thing are going in camp. I’m glad to hear that Dominic’s game is getting better, can’t wait to see him in action. I was reading the Washingtonpost.com and read a comment Eddie Jordan made about Nick Young.
“Jordan said he likes what he’s seeing from second-year shooting guard Nick Young.”
“He looks more comfortable on the floor,” Jordan said. “A lot more comfortable on the floor. He knows what the offense will give him and what he can do in the open floor. He’s not thinking so much. So, he’s showing me a lot of comfort level while still being aggressive.” . . .
I’m glad to hear that Nick is getting better also. Hopefully next year our bench will be much improved.

I’ll keep checking the blog and hopefully will “open up” more after training camp…so will look for your info… I started reading around summer league but just didn’t feel I knew enough about the team to jump in…this live blog really helps to get involved alot…and I’m learning SO MUCH about the different players….

The player that’s an enigma to me is Pecherov. Or at least I hope he’s an enigma– he was pretty much flat-out horrible last year, even accounting for the injured foot. I love what I hear about his work ethic, and it’s tough to practice and improve if your foot is injured all the time, but his sole contribution last year was to chuck shots from long-range that missed most of the time.
How does he look so far? Still struggling? Any flashes of improvement? Still a long-term project?
The continuity of the offense would be helped a ton if we had a back-up to Jamison who could both rebound and hit the outside shot.

doclinkin…i think it is fair to say pechrov was slowed by another ankle injury. in the off season. he is okay now and going full out at practice….i do see impovement..but i don’t think he is on fast track and we have seen this with big guys where it can take longer to develop….eddie jordan talked excitedly yesterday about the great option he brings with his ability to shoot from the outside…but the key is he is healthy now and needs to stay that way to really start to show great strides

I think you do; it’s about his confidence and consistancy. He got more built up with his jumper; but does HE think his defense is improving. Coach Jordan can say it; but Nick has to believe it hiimself; so agin if his jumper keeps building him up then maybe his own abilities and SEEING being a better defender keep his confidence up; and Consistancy. Does he believe that he can be consistant now; before he obviously wasn’t. And also giving himself time to improve; and soak and bask in what he is doing. We all want more, more, more of these young players; but it’s important for the young players to let the good they do do sink in. And as someone else said, defense is slower to build than offense.

angles is a diifuclt one for me to put in ords…but it has to do with defensive positioning.. for example the direction a player would go in to recover after he just helped trap on a pick and roll

yeah this is a new concept for me; angles on defense. I think of offensive angles such as leading the player on a alley oop, or leading a pass to a cutter; so on defense you’d be anticpating the direction of the roller; the angle they might go; whether inside to the middle or outside to the wing or further out to the top of key if the pick and roll started down low in the post?
Comment from Bex
Time September 30, 2008 at 12:16 PM
aight. good to hear that they will continue to trap on pick-and-roll situations. that’s what good defensive teams do. I always disliked it in the past when we just switched on every pick. I never really understood it.

Dave, it seems like Andray is playin on a whole other level. But how does his game look?
Last year he seemed most comfortable with the ball on the perimeter, dribbling and either taking his man of the dribble or pulling up for the jumper. That seemed to be his go-to-move. He made, sure, many baskets under the basket. However, if he had to create for himself he relied on the way I described.
But how does he look this year. I heard he added 10 pounds muscle. So the question: Is he more often in the lowpost, backing down his opponent? Or is he still the of-the-dribble-guy?

jump ball they are ait it again…bex he looks great..looks fit and seems older..in the scrimmage –which is underway agin– he could create off the dribble…but also was more aggressive inside… i can think of a great blocked shot he had… and i can alos think of a great pass he made from the low post…
as antawnm said he has the potential now is his time to be consistent

How is Dee Brown looking after 4 days? I’m from St Louis and have followed his career closely as a member of the Illini, then from the Jazz to Galatasary, now back to my own back yard.
Are all of these closed practices?

What does the chemistry look like out there is there any cohesiveness amongst the
Black team as oppose to the White Team? I hear alot of “TURNOVERS” thats something
I hate the most and if thats the case what could be the problem! How are the THREE-BALLERS doing”Nick Young,Stevenson,Pesh,Andray,AJ, Don Juan “.l

How is Dermarr Johnson looking compared to the other Small Forwards?
Comment from rgz
Time September 30, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Re.: “they have been trying dermarr as a guard…” can he bring the ball up? It could be that he is quick enough to guard the taller shooting guards, but would he be part of the offense as well? At 6’9″ he mibht be used to create mismatches. I know he’s played for 4 teams (ATL, NYC, DEN, SAS) which one played him at guard?

I saw in one of the photos that Haywood was pulling up from the elbow. Is that a part of game he is working on and looking to add to his game? Being able to step out and hit that jumper would be awsome for him.

This is such a great time of the year — the guys are back, they are all much better, every one of them, and we haven’t lost a game yet.
It is definitely interesting how the focus is kind of shifting to the young kids! A couple of years ago, anyone outside the top 6 or 7 players was kind of an afterthought. Now, we are really attending to Nick, Dray, Dom and JaVale — and Dee too, for that matter.
I guess it’s obvious that we have one of the better starting 5s in the league — even w/ Gil out. So *a lot* does depend on the bench — mostly that’s the kids.

Im reading a lot of season previews predicting the Wizards to do very badly. Here are just two of them
NBA.com predicts The Heat to be conference champions and us to finish 14th! I dont think that is even possible for us to do. They predict us to end with a 30-52 record.
ESPN.com Predicts 36-46, 4th in Southeast Division,and 11th in Eastern Conference. I really hope that doesn’t happen.

It easy to give the Wizards no respect. So many losing years as the Bullets and now with Gil out, the sports writers find it easy to dismiss our chances. But I kind of like that positioning. Let us be the New Orleans of this season. Before anyone has a chance to realize how good our young players have gotten we’ll be beating all of the “top” teams in the league.
Comment from ricklevinenyc

Of course, we don’t want to end our season like the Hornets did. But we do want home court advantage!
Comment from GlingGling
Time September 30, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Let them naysay. They obviously haven’t been tracking the Wiz and they obviously didn’t watch us last season. I’m not here to gain the approval of people who cannot see the future. As long as our boys go out swinging for the fences I’ll be happy. When they stop trying then we’ll have something to talk about. Until then let the meteorologists do the forecasting.

Whoever predicted us to finish 14th hasn’t been reading these blogs. The more I read the more I think we are world beaters. LETS GET IT ON!

So I was about to get real mad with that 14th ranked prediction and then I checked out nba.com and its based off of a EA sports simulation. So basically the computer programmers of an ea sports game dont think the wizards will be good not professional writers.
As far as john hollinger i still remember when he called us the 13th best team in the east before last year started and that was with what he thought to be a healthy gil
Comment from GrifonRacing

I think the highest the writers had us ranked pre season last year was 8th in the east. Amazing how much those dudes get paid for being wrong.
Yep Tom… WE are still tied for first place

Everybody is talking about players 6 – 15 now because we finally have some talent there. It’s really nice to see how fast and systematically Ernie has upgraded us.
What I like most about our team now is I no longer have to explain why I wear a Wizards cap. In the old days I’d almost have to explain why I was a fan to people LOL.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 1, 2008 at 8:18 AM
Miami could be much better this year than last, but I can’t see them winning the division — now if Beasley comes out of the gates an all-star, then that improves their outlook.
Although, yes, we are world-beaters as neal says, we were last year too and won 43 games. I’d like to win a zillion and the ring, but last year is probably a better indicator than my enthusiasm of what we’ll do this year.
We haven’t changed much. We lost Roger who was a pretty reliable backup. Despite bringing in Juan, we’ll have to see very improved play from Dominic and/or Nick to make up for that loss. The return of Etan is a wild card, however. If things go well, we have a shot to be as good as we were a few years ago and get into the 2d round.

Morning Dave; your up early; did “Coach” Gilbert bring, you, too!!! Your media team goals are succeeding with me anyway; LOL!! Hope so because you all do a wonderful job. What great effort on everyone’s part!!
