I would be surprised not to see Atlanta match the offer. but it would be a big move in the right direction for memphis
Also quick question. Does anybody want to have a gameday blog for the olympic games? Please let me know and I will start on one Sunday.

That starting 5 would be lucky to win 20 games!

But with that starting five at least there is direction. (they still need a 5) but Smith, Gay, Mayo and Conley would be a nice collection of young talent that would get LOTS of on the job training.

You never know Tom that team could turn into the last year’s Portland Trailblazers.

read that wiz may be interested in michael finley today. that would be a big plus for a couple of reasons. add depth to our 3 point shooting (stevenson, arenas, jamison,) butler and young uhhmm…. maybe. and kick the spurs back by snagging finley since they stole mason from us. and finley over mason is a + any day. definitely improves our bench, and brings intstant scoring ability.

are the wizards ever going to sign dee brown?

Gee Wiz I think that was only USA Today speculating oh who “they” thought would be a good fit and was still available. I haven’t heard anything from the Wizards about it. Finley would be a good addition though.
Dee Brown is signed Dopeboyfresh. They signed him to a 2 year “partially” guaranteed contract.

SportzWiz called it. I just read where the Hawks have matched the Memphis offer to Josh Smith.

I was hoping Memphis would get Smith. I think that would be good for us. Maybe we could cash in on that trade.

Millie I don’t think we are ever going to get “anything” from that pick. We pretty much gave Navarro up for a song because he didn’t fit our team. Ernie was just getting him “off the books” so to speak.

Kinda funny though. If he were to have said “ok Wizards I’m here” THIS YEAR….. now that might just be a fit?

ok, does that leave us any money for signing Micheal finley?

We have enough money to sign a veteran at the vet’s minimum, no problem. Will we do that, however? I don’t know.

But, Finley is looking for more than the minimum; San Antonio already offered him a deal above the minimum, and he turned it down to see what other offers he’d get. It’d be more accurate to say that he didn’t accept, rather than that he turned it down. I’m sure it’s still on the table if he wants it.

If we don’t sign another player it will be curious to me as to why Ernie asked Gil to take 16 mil less. I assumed at the time Ernie had a specific plan in mind since the 111 mil Gil accepted was Ernie’s number, not Gil’s. We won’t be in any position next season money wise to get involved in the “bumper crop” of free agents, so, it seems to me Ernie must have a plan in mind for this year?

We will get the Phizzlies’ pick if they finish in the top 16 in the league. Fat chance. The year after next we’ll get it if they finish in the top 14. Fat chance.
Sounds like Finley wants more than we have.
Why do you say the 111 was Ernie’s number, Grifon?
Yes, Brown is signed. He could still be cut, but I don’t think Pollin would part with the guaranteed part of Brown’s contract unless Grunfeld REALLY wanted to cut him.

Hmmm, that’s kind of a good point. What was the rationale for asking Gil to take less than max, if it wasn’t in order to add at least one other piece? There is no more reason for us to be able to do that next year than this — we’ll be up against the luxury tax next year just like this.
Perhaps there is something going on that we don’t know about — and that SportsWiz doesn’t know about either? (He has been expressing his feeling that we’d go into the season w/ the current cast)

I believe it was in the press conferance Neal. I remember it surprised me at the time as I thought the number was Gil’s.

That’s the only thing that makes sense to me Tom. There must be something in “the works”?

Anyway, it gives us something to think about in these dog days of no basketball action.
(unless you’re watching the olympics, I mean — and I am intending to watch today)

Something to watch out for:
The Memphis Grizzlies have sent a contract offer worth $58 million to Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith.
Should the Griz land Smith he is expected to play power forward alongside Rudy Gay at small forward, O.J. Mayo at shooting guard and Mike Conley at point guard.
Starting Five:
Mike Conley
O.J. Mayo
Rudy Gay
Josh Smith
Darko Milicic
Nice young core. Do anyone remember what would cause us to get there pick next year?
