Gameday Blog Summer League: Wizards vs. 76ers

The Washington Wizards will be back in action tonight at 8:00pm against the 76ers in their 2nd of 5 Summer League Games. The game will once again be aired on Comcast Sports Net and NBATV. The Wizards dropped their first game on Monday after a pretty brutal trip out west where the team was supposed to land in Las Vegas on Sunday Night but ended up arriving just two hours before their game on Monday.

Philadelphia enters tonight with a 1-2 record after winning last night 81-73 over the Lakers. The Sixers have been led by Thaddeus Young and Marreese Speights who have combined to score 39 points per game.

For more on the sixers click here.

The blog will start right around game time so please join in and discuss what you are seeing throughout the game.

What would we use to pay Camby if we got him for a 2d round pick? You kicking in?

Speights and McGee are totally different kinds of players. If Javale develops, we’ll be happy. In any case, we didn’t have a chance to pick Speights. In other words… I was just kidding in calling for the *showdown.*

On the other hand, in 4 games, Speights has looked really terrific. In his first game he got 13 boards; in his 2d game he went 7-9 from the floor; then 7-11 in his 3d game. So… he has looked quite good indeed. Only summer league, however.

I would like to see McGhee be a little more assertive and active tonight and no long rang balls, less turnovers, more time for Wallace and Elegar looked nice.

I’ll be overjoyed if Blatche and Young look like they can be in the rotation this year. Anything else is icing on the cake.

Comment from chillwill

Blatche had decent game but he must have a big year this year in order to get in to the rotation. He said he’s been a “gym rat ” this yr. so he has to put in down.

Comment from Rook
Time July 16, 2008 at 3:49 PM

We couldn’t “get” Camby for a 2nd Round pick – or anything else for that matter.

Denver did not want any salaries back – so that rules out a Trade. The only way to trade a pick for a player is if the team receiving the player is UNDER the Salary Cap. And they have to be under the Cap by the entire amount of the incoming player’s salary.

That scenario excluded almost ALL the other teams in the League…

The only team that had ANY room under the Salary Cap to get Camby was the Clippers. (Perhaps Memphis, I don’t know their Cap situation)…

It’s precisely what Philly did to get Brand. They dumped salary by trading Calvin Booth and Rodney Carney to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a draft pick. Then they used the money they saved on Booth’s and Carney’s salaries to sweeten the pot for Brand.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time July 16, 2008 at 4:10 PM

neal, did you not consider Blatche to be in the rotation last year?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time July 16, 2008 at 4:33 PM

I would have dumped Carmelo before Camby. Look for a *big* drop in wins by Denver this year, and everybody will be wondering why.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time July 16, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Maybe a more specific way to put what neal said is to hope that Blatche will be in the rotation right behind Antawn — that is to hope that he’ll *earn* that place by his productivity. Many of his minutes last year were at the 5, and presumably that’s because Etan was down.

Not that I mean to speak for neal — he may have something altogether different in mind.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time July 16, 2008 at 4:45 PM

So you would like to see Dray on the two-deep in the depth chart preferably playing behind antawn or Caron if they went big. And im guessing you’d like to see Nick coming off the bench for DeShawn (although with a healthy gil that will mean less minutes are available).

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time July 16, 2008 at 5:13 PM

SportsWiz — great question about the hoped-for rotation.

For me at least, yes, 18 minutes/game for Blatche behind Antawn, and maybe some other situational minutes for him.

I’d like to see Etan get 15-18 minutes behind Brendan. Really, I think 30 minutes seems ideal for Brendan. It would be great of course if Javale earned a few minutes, but that’s a lot to expect out of a kid.

I’d like to see Antonio get 20 plus minutes a game, I really would. He is a *very* productive player and one of the dozen top point guards in the game. How that would work behind Gil, I don’t know — I guess w/ GA sliding over to play a little 2.

Last year, DeShawn seemed at his best when he had about 25 starter minutes — possibly this was because of his balky knee. But I think that’s the best number for him all the same, which leaves a little time for Gil at the 2.

If Nick could please please develop a more well-rounded game, he should earn 20-25 minutes, mostly behind DS but some behind Caron. He is longer than Caron, for heaven’s sake.

The rest of the backup minutes behind Caron should go to Dom if he earns them; if he doesn’t earn them, then we are in some trouble unless we do manage to sign a veteran 3 as a 15th player.

Songaila should be 3d at Center and Pech third at the 4. Dee should get spot minutes. I don’t know how much sense all this makes.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time July 16, 2008 at 5:20 PM

Tonight — I’m looking for better work from Dom, more of that Elegar energy (could he possibly stick?), structure and focus from Nick (and shooting too, of course), and the chance to see more of Javale.

I’ll also be looking w/ interest at Philly — they took a huge jump up in the East w/ the signing of Brand (assuming he stays healthy), and I’m worried about them.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time July 16, 2008 at 5:21 PM

It’s very difficult :) . It’s why I’m happy I don’t have Eddie’s job.

I will try and do my best, but so much of it will depend on how guys step up at practice and training camp and obviously in game situations as well.

My guess is gil, caron and Antawn see between 35-40 minutes per game so lets call it 37 per game for all three.

DeShawn and Brendan see 30 minutes per game. So that leaves you with about 70 minutes per game for our bench.

So between AD, Nick, Dom, Dray, Darius, Etan, Pech, McGee and Brown your really fighting for minutes. That’s why when Ernie talked about taking McGee he wasn’t looking for someone that could help a ton this year, because with all those guys it would be very hard for any rookie to see many minutes.

Really trying to figure out the #’s right now is VERY difficult. There will be a lot of players battling for playing time come early october.

Comment from Gtown87
Time July 16, 2008 at 5:26 PM

Caron will almost never sit. When he does, go with Dom or AB if we go big.

Gil should play no more than 35 min per, if we want him around come playoff time.

AD or Dee should be on when Gil is off depending on matchup. (against Iverson and other small quick guards, go with Dee)

Deshawn and Nick should split almost even. I think thats kind of a “which one’s hot” situation with those 2.

Antawn should play about the same minutes Gil plays, they like being on the floor together. When Tawn sits, AB or, get this, JAVALE AT THE 4???? why not?

If Etan is the same Etan he was in 06, he and BH should just about split minutes. I like ET because he’s more physical but Haywood is longer.

I am concerned about Darius in the Olympics, I realize it is pride and honor to play for your country. I just remember him before not responding well to that, really tired and of course the obvious getting hurt. I really wish Etan can get some run, but he is at least getting some run with full contact. With Posey now off the market (And I really think he was a good fit for us, full MLE) What do we do next?

James Gist and Patrick Ewing Jr so far have shown really well in the Summer League for all the locals here. I really look for Dom and Nick to go of tonight, and McGee to really control the paint. AB has a sweet looking stroke so far, that should really open up some things on the wing if he can develop that consistant shot.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time July 16, 2008 at 5:31 PM

Gtown they might keep caron’s minutes down because he’s had a couple minor injuries that have kept him out for around 15 games a year. As for Posey, I truly believe he was never an option as just a free agent, there had to be some kind of manuvering to get him in. Had the Wizards signed him to the contract New orlenas just did it would have cost them around 14-15 million dollars when you talk about luxury tax and money they would’ve lost from going over.

Comment from Tom Mandel

SportsWiz — the only problem with your scheme for the big three is that you’re talking about over 3000 for each of them (if my calculation in my head is right), and that’s *a lot* — in fact, it’s almost certainly too much for any of them. I think of AJ as too old for those kind of minutes, Gil is coming off an injury, and Caron plays in a way that gets him too nicked up; he’ll need more rest than that.

Hmmm, I wonder what the league average is for starter minutes vs. bench minutes — and for starter minutes at each position. Obviously, the real world (injuries, etc.) make these kinds of calculations hard to do in a clean way, but it’d be interesting to know.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time July 16, 2008 at 5:33 PM

Jeff im not disagreeing on Gist , but are we talking about the same Ewing Jr?

Game 1 – 0 points 5 fouls, 3 turnovers and 2 rebounds in 16 minutes
Game 2 – 0 points 2 fouls, 3 assists (positive), 1 rebound 0 for 4 shooting in 14 minutes

Comment from SportzWiz
Time July 16, 2008 at 5:35 PM

Right around 3000 Tom. But players miss games here and there. I would say basically ever all-star averages over 35 minutes per game and all three are all stars.

Comment from jeffmalone1990

lol, Sportz Wiz, just from the energy aspect, he was really around the ball alot. With Theus running that time, he will be a hustle player off the bench, a high energy guy. I am looking at Gist as we speak, looks very relaxed and bringing a lot of energy. And on Darius, SportzWiz I hope you are correct!

Question for everyone, this may be a bit of old news but it is worth mentioning, Can Etan and Haywood really split minutes? Can they both be in the same locker room? I realize they patched everything up last year but that seemed easy with Haywood getting all of the minutes while Etan was recovering. I think getting McGee (IMO) something may be in the works to deal on of our bigs, thoughts?

who would we get for one of our bigs

Comment from wizkid034
Time July 16, 2008 at 6:41 PM

If there is a deal in place for anyone, it would be fopr Etan. EG is not trading our starting center (Haywood) without anyone to step in. We just drafted JaVale, and AB just got a big contract. IMO Etan has no trade value. His contract is BAD and still has two years. He is also coming off a serious injury for which he missed the entire year. Long story short…I do not see any trades happening.

As for the rotation, I think that AB will be the primary back-up for Caron and D-Song for Antawn. Dom will get some spare minutes behind AB. The idea is to develop AB and Pech into the PFs when AJ retires and D-Song’s contract expires. That will leave Dom as the backup to Caron. Then we have Brendan and JaVale at the 5.

Finally…I am looking to see more from Dee Brown. I thought he was just okay the other night. I will cut him a break because he is new to the offense. He did nothing but pass the other night. I would like to see him take it to the hoop. As always, I am watching AB. I want to see him play under more control and hit a few more mid-range jumpers. Also, AB should only be allowed 3 fouls in summer league. He needs to work on not fouling so much. The last thing you want for him is for them to increase the foul limit to 10 per game. I thought NY looked good at the end of the game on Monday. I would like to see him carry that over. He looked like the man. He and AB need to run this team. I definitely want to see more from Elegar…I liked him a lot on Monday. Veremeenko needs to get more minutes as well.

GO WIZ!!!!!

Back on the Wallace bus I have seen a few post, that we should give Brown some room for error because he does not know the offense. I do not agree with that at all he and Wallace are learning at the same time, to me it is all about who can run Eddie’s offense the best and not afraid to knock down a shot and play D. I will take the guard from G Town with a history of D, and know a Princeton offense over the Fighting Illini. But we will see how this all plays out. Hope Wallave gets some extended burn in the 2nd half

I watched the whole game but on a 15 minute tape delay, so unable to comment here.

I guess you can see why I liked Speights during the run up to the draft, huh?

I’ll comment at some point tomorrow, don’t know when as it’s a busy day.

Nick Young was just horrible, that much is obvious.

It was an entertaining game for a while, and then we got manhandled. Andray started out well. But he missed free throws, fouled a lot, turned the ball over a lot and didn’t rebound.

Dom played well in stretches, and then made a few bonehead moves. Like last year, he showed that he can pass. He looked very athletic, and he is definitely at a better weight. He has been working on his shot too. In all, he was probably our best player last night.

Javale was our 2d best player; he showed terrific athleticism — I think he is a great prospect. He also rebounded. He was pretty much the only Wizard who did. We got only 3 offensive boards last night, all of them by Javale.

Forbes got a start last night, and I watched him pretty closely. I don’t think he has a chance of sticking; he is a skilled player with good moves and a good understanding of the game. But, he lacks athleticism. He doesn’t have a first step, and he doesn’t rise quickly. The way he plays, he has to be able to get his own shot, and he can’t do that at this level.

Dee Brown showed that he can shoot, but he also showed why he hasn’t yet made it in the league. Jamont Gordon, an undrafted rookie, kind of abused him. (Let it be said that Gordon may abuse *a lot* of people — he has talent and he is *big*) Dee turned it over 4 times. Still, he showed some stuff last night.

I don’t know what to say about Nick. Basketball seems to be a pick-up game to him. He has terrific gifts; it’ll be a shame if he can’t turn them into a terrific game.

A few comments on a few sixers:

Marreese Speights — Well, it’s just summer league, and all that, but this kid looks like he has it all. He is cat-quick, incredibly strong, has great hands, shoots well, rebounds like a monster, what more is there to say about him. Earlier in the day, I watched Sac’to. and their 12th pick, Jason Thompson. He was very impressive, but Speights lapped him. He looks like he will be an all star. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were a RoY candidate.

Jason Smith — Never known as a rebounder, but we let him get 11 of them on us. He shoots well and seems to understand the game.

Jamont Gordon — Unless he is a head-case, I can’t imagine this guy failing to make the league. He has great size and athleticism, a good handle, and seems to understand what’s going on on the court. He had 7 assists in 24 minutes and grabbed 4 rebounds as well. I don’t know what we’ve guaranteed to Dee Brown, but I would be likely to take a chance on Gordon if Philly doesn’t have room for him.
