DRAFT NIGHT
9:25 AM….Wizards radio guy Dave Johnson checking in. This is the place for all things Wizards draft. Tonight I will be inside the draft room blogging and giving everyone the latest. As I mentioned there was a flurry of phone calls inside the room last year right before the Wizards pick but no deal. This year could be different. We’ll just have to wait and see. And the Wizards also have a second round pick. Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld has a good second round history including selecting Michael Redd for the Bucks in the 2000 draft. I will check back later and please feel free to post questions. Again this is your direct line inside “The Room”.
I just got down to the Wizards Draft Room, here’s a first person view from what Ernie will be looking at. The screen on the left is a constantly updating billboard with the center screen the live draft on TV.
6:20 PM…..Dave Johnson checking in from INSIDE the draft room.….it is quiet now although all the phone lines are being tested…..this is not the night to have phone issues….all kinds of rumors flying around which should make the night eventful…..It was team President Ernie Grunfeld who said that the draft is deep but uncertain. A big reason for that uncertainty is that this is also a very young draft.

hey wiz-skins you are right..last season almost seems like two seasons ago. I blogged in the room last year…I may not be able to get into specifics but I will try to bring out some of the atmosphere and who knows maybe we will be ahead of the curve on an announcement…last year I remember Milt Newton jumped in with us for a bit so it should be fun

Has anyone checked out Hoops World.com? They are reporting that the Wiz and the Rockets are ready to swap picks, with the Wiz getting the #25 pick 7 Luther Head for our # 18 so they can pick Courtney Lee. Here’s the link: http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9216

Wow, I actually like this move. What does this mean for Nick Young, however? Do you think Ernie might try to package the #25 pick and Nick Young in order to move up to select a guy like Hibbert, Lopez, or Speights? That would be great if we could not only get a player like Head but also use that addition to move up in the draft

Ernie picked Michael Redd in 2000. So in the 7 drafts since then, how’s his second round accuracy?
In 01 he picked Andre Hutson one pick ahead of Jarron Collins.
in 02 he picked Marcus Haislip in the first round. Oye. He picked Dan Gadzuric one pick ahead of Carlos Boozer in the second. He picked Ronald Murray later in the second, then with the final 2nd chose Chris Owens from Texas ahead of Songalia, Rasul Butler and Luis Scola.
Did he pick Jarvis Hayes and Steve Blake in 03? Or was that Wes holding down the fort post MJ? 04 he turned #5 into Antwan Jamison, then selected PJ Ramos at the top of the second round.
05 was Blatche late in the second.
06 was Pech and Veremeenko. Leon Powe was the next pick.
I’d say he has an uneven record in the 2nd, but with Redd, Blatche, Ron Murray and maybe even Gadzuric on the plus side he does better than most.
Haislip was out of the NBA after 3 years, never making a dent. However, he’s now considered one of the top forwards in the Euroleague. Maybe instead of reaching for another Haislip we can just sign the one who’s ready now. Haislip should be Ernie’s cautionary tale for this draft. Last year he left Turkish power Efes Pilsen for Unijaca. The player who Efes signed to replace him? Andre Hutson. Circle of life…

Iff this trade were to go through i dont think it changes anythin with Nick. head can play the 1 and 2 and is very similar to Roger mason, which it could definitely effect his re-signing.
This probably also means the Wizards have a couple guys in mind at 18 and feel one would be there at 25.

Luther Head:
Good reserve guard who can shoot 3’s. He dipped to 35% on 3’s last year, taking 176 fewer attempts than in 07 as his minutes suffered. Not an Adelman guy I imagine. The year prior he shot 44% from 3pt range.
He’s best paired with a taller PG because taller 2’s take advantage of him being only 6′3. Playing with AD should address that.
This looks like Ernie’s way of replacing Mason. Clearly they aren’t ready to turn Mason’s 21 minutes a night over to Nick just yet. Head has this year and a qualifying year left on his contract.

You can’t just swap picks, for the Roxies to give Head to the Wiz… [...] …the Wiz would have to give up a player w/an equivalent contract. That would mean something like DMac or Pecherov to Houston unless there were other players involved on both sides.
I like Head– who doesn’t? He’d be a good replacement for losing Mason (probable) and has a contract expiring sooner to give the Wiz flexibility of Young develops quickly. Also trading a youngster would open up a slot for the rookie, considering we only have 4 summerleague slots for players on the roster (right now: Dray, Pech, DMac, and Young. Neither draft pick could play if they had signed with the Wiz, and no agent would risk injury and let the client play for the team before their guy was signed). It’s not a minor consideration considering how little a draft pick is likely to play behind the established rotation. If they’re gonna be effective they need all the Summerleague etc they can get.
I bet the swap wouldn’t happen until after the Rocks select at 25 and only then if there’s a player on the board the Wiz like more than Pech/Dmac.
Author Bill Ingram is a Rockets fan if that sheds and light on the rumor, he won’t have considered the Washington angles.

I like the Luther Head deal. He is more of a combo type guard than Roger. Even though he would match up good with AD he would also match up good with GA and DS. His 3-point ability would be a plus.
At number 25 I hope we could still possibly get someone like Hickson, Ajinca, Thompson or R.Lopez.

If we pick 25 then I see Ernie picking for the future. Picking a foreign player or a young player with some promise that can be told to go to Europe for 1 or 2 years (like Pech). Why waste giving someone a 3 year contract to sit on the bench of a deep team like the Wiz, especially if you bring in another backup like Head.
I just don’t see anyone picked at 25 who can contribute this year.

with the raptors getting jermaine oneil and getting rid of an upset t.j. ford, i feel the east will get even stronger this off season than it did last off season……i think teams like the cats, new york, and hey maybe the bucks will grow in strength while teams like orlando, toronto, atlanta, and philidelphia will become even stronger presence than they were last season…….i think the wizards should not excuse any trade offers they might receive tonight, i think they should look at all available options and find the best one. i also dont think they should ignore any oppurtunities of signing free agents this summer or trading players…..teams can go from an average team to a top contender during an offseason, and the wizards have the ability to be no different…….they got players with high salaries and arent really doing much, if i were the wiz i would try and fix that as well

Wiz trade: Songaila, Daniels, Pecherov, 18th, memphis pick
Indy trades: Troy Murphy, 11th pick
If bayless were to fall that far and we could get him that would be a steal. Him or Augustine
Arenas/Bayless

Butler/Dmac/Sharpe(47)
Jamison/Blatche/Murphy

wizbulletman0…that trade would be HORRIBLE for the Wiz. Jerryd Bayless is really overrated and Murphy is a stiff! And you are willing to give up D-Song, Pech AND or 18th for that rubbish! I would curse EG if he made that deal.
Now…the deal with the Rockets for Luther Head is a great deal for us. I am just worried about how that is going to fit salary-wise. I think the Wiz will lose Roger because they cannot afford him, and not because they do not want him. Face it…if we re-sign Gilbert and Antawn, we will not be able to take on any more than a rookie contract without going over the luxury tax threshold. I agree that we would take an international guy at #25 if we make the trade. EG likes stocking those guys overseas and not having to pay them.

There was an interesting post on another blog about Robin Lopez and his rebounding.
He’s the better Offensive rebounder……. and his brother Brook Lopez was the better Defensive rebounder.
I watched some Stanford games this year, and noticed the big difference in Robin & Brook’s games.
Brook expended a lot of energy on the Offensive end – while his Brother lurked for Offensive boards.
On the Defensive end, Robin was the better help defender and shot blocker, while Brook boxed out and did the rebounding.
Rebounding is all about effort, timing, and desire. Robin Lopez has all those characteristics – in SPADES!! – - So I think he’ll be a good rebounder in the NBA.

I am not familiar with Jason Thompson. If we make the trade with the Rockets, JT might still be there at #25, I think we would be reaching to take him at #18.
I like Singletary in the 2nd round. I think he will be a very good PG in the NBA. I like him and Weaver (Wash. St.) D.J. Augustin played on a better team and in a better conference. He is also a sophomore, and Singletary is a senior. Augustin has a better upside than Singletary, but Singletary can help right now.

We are only $17 million under the luxury tax threshold. If we sign Gil and AJ, we will be paying them close to, if not over, $17 million next year.
AJ is coming off of making 16 mill and Gil, 12 mill. Even if both take a pay cut, we will be over the threshold.
If Pollin is okay with going over the threshold, we will be fine, but he has been dead set against that in the past.

The trade: I haven’t looked at Luther Head’s stats (or, SportsWiz, watched him play much
), but his salary is low and lets assume he’s as good as Roger and gives us a more flexible contract to work with. In that sense, it’s an excellent trade, smart business move.
But, don’t we have to give up an equivalent contract? I don’t know who that would be.
Were this to happen, picking at 25 puts a completely different spin on the Wizards draft. *All* our back and forth would be wasted — it isn’t fair!!
Actually, I like it. One thing it may indicate is that they really liked Hickson. For another thing, I don’t think there’s likely to be much of a talent gap between the guy you get at 18 and the one you get at 25.
If Batum is available at that pick, you are talking about a guy who was projected in the top ten not that long ago, and whom *everyone* thinks has a big upside. For that matter, if you take Javale McGee at 25 it seems like less of a reach. Btw, Jonathon Givony of Draftexpress says Javale McGee = Patrick O’Bryant, a guy who has *not* worked out.

From what I saw from Javale Mcgee he isn’t Patrick Bryant by any means. This man runs the break like a forward he steals, he block shots, he gave unc the business when he played them. He just needs to get in the weight room ala Tyson Chandler just better offensive tools. This guy is just getting better. If we have the 25th pick I would definitely take Mcgee but they can keep Luther Head just another guard that wants to shoot all the time, arent the wizards suppose to make room for Nick Young this year. Trading Chris Webber for Mitch Richmond
Trading Rasheed Wallace for Rod Strickland

Practically giving away Ben Wallace and Richard Hamilton
It still kills me that when Detroit won their championship 3 of the starters all played for the Wizards.

Hoopshype has finally posted Blatche’s salary for next year. It’s $2,739,669. So we’re at $41,199,400 for the 9 players under contract. Add $10M to give Jamison what he says he wants and $1,160,200 for our first round pick (mandated by the collective bargaining agreement). Then add the minimum for a rookie for our 2nd round pick ($442,114) and the minimum for a second-year player for McGuire ($711,517) and we’re up to $53,513,231 for 13 players.
I presume Arenas and Grunfeld have had informal discussions so that the Wiz will know if they have to get a PG elsewhere. And I have to take Grunfeld’s word that he wants Arenas back. So my best guess is that Arenas gets the $12.8M his option would have given him, but with a 6-year contract and an 8% raise every year. The rumors are probably right. So that puts us at $66,313,231 for 14 players.
The projected luxury tax is $71M. So we have $4,686,769 left to sign a 15th player – Mason or someone like him.

The latest DraftExpress Mock Draft, from yesterday, shows Houston taking CDR, with Batum, Chalmers and Speights also available. (note: I’d be willing to bet that Speights’s fall is about interviews rather than workouts; people worry that he isn’t smart enough to succeed in the NBA. Personally, I don’t like that kind of stuff; he is a kid, get him a mentor!)
That’s a heck of a group to choose from at 25; I’d be happy w/ any of those guys, and in a way CDR might be the one who makes the most sense. He doesn’t have Batum’s talent, but he is tough and a winner — and, SportsWiz, I’ve seen him play!
The same mock draft now has us picking Darnell Jackson at 47. I think he’d be a *great* pick there. Now that is a guy who could turn out like Leon Powe or Paul Millsap. He has terrific numbers and is smart and articulate.
That’d be a heck of a draft: Head, CDR and Jackson. Send Nick, Dom, CDR and Jackson to Summer League and see what happens.

Granted, he can’t shoot for anything but he can play physical in the post and we really don’t need any more scoring. Then we should take Giddens with the 47 pick just because he’d be the best available. This guy has a complete game and actually plays D.

I think if you got Head you would definitely go with a big at 25. Maybe an Alexis Ajinca or a Hickson.

After listening to Ivan, he seems to think EG has a definite game plan. Rumor has it the Wiz have been as active in discussions about trades and such as any team in the league. Ivan said to Wiz fans “tonight should be a fun ride.” He jogged my memory that the AJ draft night trade was in place 3 days prior, but nothing was leaked until it actually happened.
This is the good and bad thing about having a tight lipped GM. He does not play into the rumor business. We get our rumors from other teams.
I am ready for the ride!

Why would the Wizards trade down, just to trade back up again? Some people be talking some serious foolishness….
I really hope we do this thing to get Luther Head. Dude is a straight up beast!!! I think the dude weighs like 145lbs!!! Straight up muscle! The Wiz just got a lot tougher!
In all seriousness, I say we keep Head and let Gilbert walk. Seriously. Then we can draft someone like Ryan Anderson out of Cal and let Antawn walk. I think if we do that, we will probably reach the finals.
I hope Grunfeld is reading this…

I also LOVE the idea of Mario Chalmers.
I wonder what pick we can get if we trade Blatche and the 18th. Remember Blatche has upside and is only 21. He is still valuable. If some teams are willing to take a risk on McGee they will take a risk with Andray. If Andray was coming out in this years draft he would be a Too 10 or Maybe even Top 5 Pick for sure. So why dont we try to get something for him now. I reallly dont mind if we keep or trade him really. Im cool with both thoughts.

If we are able to get Kyle Lowry and Memphis 28th for our 18th that would be a heck of a deal. Maybe if we include Blatche we may even be able to choose between Lowry or Conley. Just a thought though…but an interesting one.

I met hibberts cousin who is a good friend of mine. Didnt know he was related to hibbs, hibberts strengths according to him is his height.. he will end up close to 7 4′, his offensive rebounds and what he will do defensively. His passing is Okay, he will probably rebound better than score and he’s slow and goofy, doesnt move fluidly. He will probably be a starter or backup depending on where he goes. IN washington he will be a backup.
What I don’t understand though is this, why is Nicolas Batum falling so low, he’s obviously a skilled player. Thats why San antonio and cleveland are hiding his facts. He was rated really highly last year and only because of lack of aggresion and softness in some cases do we underrate him. I’d draft him at 18th forget everything else, No reason he can’t be a richard jefferson or better he is a prototypical siza and athleticism

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time June 26, 2008 at 4:41 PM
No, the salaries match nearly to a T (you have to be w/in 15%).
I don’t see this trade as any kind of problem for us: Jefferson is on his way down (still a good player, for sure), Simmons doesn’t deserve the money he’s getting and Yi hasn’t shown anything at all.
Somewhere above the Wizards were quoted that Head wasn’t an upgrade over Mason. That’s right; they are about the same by the numbers. I thought acquiring Head did give us a much more flexible contract to work with. Maybe they *are* thinking of re-signing Mason. That’s ok, he is an ok player. I do worry that Ernie is too in love w/ his team.
We’ll see. I think I’ll go meditate for the hour and a half before the draft starts.

Yeah – but most of thost rebounds were Offensive, as his brother Brook took care of the Defensive rebounds.
Robin Lopez will be a very good rebounder in the NBA.. He’s got a terrific motor. Plays extremely hard.
Rebounding is all about desire and effort – two things that Robin Lopez has in spades.

Salaries aren’t really an issue with these guys, they make very little relatively, five or six spots in the draft isnt that much…
Plenty of good guys out there. PLENTY. Again there were about 10 guys out there that were between 6′10 and 7 feet that if you asked 15 different Gm’s theyd rank the guys completely different 1-10.
It all depends on who the GM likes.

Here’s one thing, for all that his rep suggest he’s got defensive issues, he led the draft in one key defensive ratio: blocks + steals per Personal foul. As far as the Wiz’ offense: he can hit a face-up shot, moves well without the ball, can catch and finish above the rim.
There are players ahead of him I would have wanted more, and there are player behind him I would like to have traded down for, but the fact is in order to pull off a trade like the Celts did last year you have to have developing assets. He gets to compete with Andray now for that back-up ‘big’(-ish) spot, and he and Pesh can compete to see which tall guy can throw a better three point shot. Whatever, point is the the Wiz can listen to offers for any/all of our surplus back-up Bigs. Hey, he’s pretty mobile with a face-up game, you can probably play him next to Brendan as a back-up power forward. No smallball there.
I’m more curious to see what happens with the second round pick.
Hey DJ what was the atmosphere in the room when Hibbert was taken? I suspect Eddie wanted him.

Comment from wiz-skins07
Time June 26, 2008 at 9:54 PM
SportzWiz — He isnt a bust just yet. He has probably the biggest upside of anyone ion the draft but he also has one of the biggest downsides. I just hope he proves me wrong. One of our big man projects hasnt worked out (Blatche) so what makes you think he is. He better put on some muscle like Dwight Howard. He looks super weak and seem like i could break him.
I still kinda disappointed. With all the talent left on the board (Chalmers, Arthur) we decided to go with him. But if you really look into it, at the beginning of this proccess all we wanted was a big man to rebound, block shots, and hustle. I looks like he can do all three if we make him focus on the defensive side of the ball 95% of the time. But looking that skinny not many people are going to be scared of going at him in the hole. Now if he adds muscle, thats a whole different story.
I think im basing my thoughts b/c of the way he looks. He is just so weak looking. It seems like you could karate-chop him and break his bones.

I’m willing to give benefit of the doubt. Kid is darned ath-uh-letic for his size and we are officially now the biggest team in the league by a long stretch. If in fact we can play him as a back-up to Jamison that would be the surefire cure for smallball. Put Blatche at PG, Pech at SG, you know. Something like that…

I was making a little joke
but actually, w/ Hibbert and Speights gone, McGee started to look better. I definitely think that Chalmers was a reach at 18, and I didn’t want DA or DJ. I’m sure they were also considering Hickson, but they might think it’ll be easier to find a guy close to his potential in round 2.
It’s ok, Javale McGee is a Wizard now — time to look for the positives in him, guys.

Now it’s time to calm down and look to the bright side. Maybe he’ll pan out to be better the guys we passed on.
Comment from Rook
Time June 26, 2008 at 10:18 PM
The problem is he’s extremely far from reaching his full potential—so far that you have to wonder if he’ll ever make it considering the way he looks at times on the court. Struggles to establish position and finish in the paint, settles for some incredibly awkward off-balance shots, and is virtually a black hole with his passing skills—averaging 4 turnovers for every 1 assist. Looks very disinterested at times, doesn’t hustle, gives up on plays, late getting back down the floor, and might be the worst man to man defender we’ve ever evaluated in the post. Gets pushed around, gambles excessively for steals, has no stance or fundamentals, doesn’t move his feet, and is a complete non-factor even against the mediocre competition he faces. According to Synergy’s “PlayType QuickTable stats,†McGee was scored on 66% of the time when being posted up in the paint (against the likes of Fresno State, Utah State, Houston, etc). Is light years away from being able to compete on an NBA level defensively, if ever.

SportzWiz — if he can add 20 or 30 more of only muscle before season start, then i would be extremely happy with the pick. Right now the only problem with him is he strength he is soft. When he adds 20 more pds of only muscle then we can coach him up on defense, hes good enough on offense for what we need. What we need is DEFENSE, HUSTLE, REBOUNDING, AND SHOT BLOCKING (which he already has)

Glad you guys made it through w/o me. I was tied up all day.
I’m not crazy about the pick. His FT average of 53% tells me his coordination is not that of a guy with a lot of natural ability. If Wiz-skins07 is right about his being weak, a poor defender, and not a hustler, I definitely don’t like it. We’ve already have tall skinny guys who don’t like to bang inside. We need guys with the opposite characteristics in the worst way. The best thing I see is that he blocked 2.8 shots/game.

Block shot and rebound comparison of the 1st round centers:
Brook Lopez: 56 and 221
Robin Lopez: 83 and 204
Roy Hibbert: 75 and 216
JAVALE MCGEE: 92 AND 242
Alexis Ajinca: foreign
Kosta Koufos: 67 and 247

If the NBA would ever enforce the “traveling” rule, Cleveland would suck.
They got no one but Lebron. Take away the four feet the ref’s give him and they would go to the bottom of the league.

Ok I’m back from that “draft party…†blah – all I gotta say…
I skimmed through all the comments; SportzWiz, that was funny when you were like: Mike Jones (who?). I swear I do that every time I hear that name…
I’m satisfied with McGee. I would imagine how stressful it is – all this draft commotion – so I can’t help but to give EG his props. To tell the truth, who’s to say that one draft pick is better than the other? I’m convinced that some of you guys would want to draft a rooster if he was ranked high on some draft list in an article. Cok-a-doodle-doo!

I have a feeling the most sought after free agent is going to be Antawn Jamison.
He would make teams like Houston soar up the charts.
Thank God for the salary cap. No good team is going to be able to sign him straight up.
They would have to work a sign and trade with the Wiz which I am sure Ernie will have to squash.

Grif– Yeah I loved him last year, this year he’s recovering from cancer, but when fully healthy he can hit some insane shots from deeep NBA range or in traffic. This offense makes mediocre gunners look good, but Lofton’s a quality gunner when he has a little space to shoot.

The McGee pick is fine. The Wiz don’t need more offense – which is what I sensed from reading why other bloggers don’t like him. If the Big 3 is reunited, more defense is the way to go for a team that needs to improve on the defensive end.
I can’t comment on McGee’s stats because he played at Nevada. Not the SEC, Pac 10, Big 10; but the WAC.
Wiz second round pick of Bill Walker is a big steal – no matter what his injury status is. I like the gamble!

Great news for James Gist. He has a shot.

I’m exhausted from this marathon — my analysis tomorrow. Coming up w/ Walker at 47 was pretty good, I’ll say that, although maybe Hendrix would have made more sense? Still… this guy was projected pretty high not too long ago.
More in the a.m. Maybe there’ll be a new “what do you think?” thread.

If Charlotte goes hard for Jamison, they better be willing to give up DJ Augustin and/or Kyle Weaver in a sign and trade deal.

Wow — It looks like we might be able to get Jamont Gordon and Chris Lofton as free-agents.
Btw. — Deron Washington actually got drafted.

Should’ve drafted a foreign player and stashed him away for a couple of years than get cash. What are we, the Seattle Sonics.

I am confused as how this “Ernie just spoke, they are very happy with the value they got from Walker” turned into cash.

We better be getting that money so that we will be able to go over the luxury tax threshold. Abe Pollin is greedy enough already. Does he really think we are gonna get some where without going over the luxury tax?

Value = asset. They got somebody they felt they could get something for. During the presser ernie said in exact words asset. We were waiting on it but it was pretty obvius he wasn’t staying . Sorry.

Maybe Abe told Ernie that his big house lost alot of value and Ernie needs to find a way to recoupe it. Thus Bill Walker for Cash.

Yes, We better sign Jamont Gordon and Chris Lofton. Gordon was thought of as a early 2nd Rounder.

I am sure Abe had nothing to do with this trade. It was probably already made with Boston. Ernie just did not want a second round pick because they might not have made the team.

Man, I was so hyped up for this draft, and nothing happens. We get my most disliked player, and then we get more money for Abe’s old greedy self. Disappointing day for me.

Jamont Gordon is said to be very god defensively, helping Mississippi State be one of the top defensive teams in the NCAA. He also can create his own shot as wel as anyone.
He averaged 17.2 pts 6.6 rebs 4.9 asst 1 stl per game — That really good in my books for and undrafted free-agent.

Dave — Whats up man! It seems like the last Wizards game has been a long time ago. Hey do you think you can update us with anything that might be going down in the draft room, like trades we rejected or the rejected to us or rumors or what Ernie is looking to do? Thanks man. I will be back on here tonight.
