2nd Round Sleepers

A couple people on this blog have been talking about 2nd round players they liked in the last couple of drafts, some of those players have turned out good some have turned out not so good. Therefore, I want you to state now who you think will turn out to be steals in the 2nd round and a couple sentences on why you are choosing that player.

I think the question posed by SportzWiz is impossible to comment since the draft hasn’t happened yet. I’m going on pure speculation with names from the DraftExpress website that Tom M. consistently refers to.

I have 2 names: Brandon Rush and Wayne Ellington.

Brandon Rush (Kansas) – He’s not projected to go into the second round (DraftExpress has him going in late 1st round), but his consistency is what amazes me. If you look at his stats, you see that he’s been a 13.5 ppg/5.5 rpg/2 apg guy for all 3 years. Rush shot over 40% from downtown and is a 77% free throw shooter his Junior year. He may not have a lot of upside, but I like consistency and he can be certainly be relied upon off the bench. He also has good size to be an NBA player now (6-6′, 210 lb shooting guard). His game reminds me of Roger Mason Jr when Mason was at Virginia.

Wayne Ellington (UNC) – DraftExpress has him going in the second round. A former “diaper dandy”, this Sophomore scoring point guard reminds me of Gilbert Arenas. Ellington’s assist numbers are low for a PG (he’s really a 2-guard), but his job was to score from the outside while Hansbrough scores from the paint. Ellington is fast but he’s not quick like Arenas. He’s also a very good free throw shooter. At 6-4′, 200 lbs, Ellington has an NBA body ready to take a lot of hits.

I have a question. when we trade Juan Carlos Navarro to the Memphis Grizzlies, in exhcange for a future first round draft pick. Memphis Grizzlies had bad record this season, they are 3 worst team this year, the mean we will have top 3 pick? am I correct?

No unfortunately it is lottery protected right now. Here is the deal on the protection

The Wizards receive a top-19 protected first round pick in 2008, a top-16 protected pick in 2009, a top-14 (lottery) protected pick from 2010-2012, a top-12 protected pick in 2013 or a second-round pick and cash considerations if they have not received a pick by 2013.

Ok people dont want to list their 2nd round sleepers? How about name me your top 5 players you would like to see the Wizards take at #18. And don’t say Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley or O.J. Mayo, guys that could legitimately get to 18.

Here are some excellent statistical tools to use in thinking about whom we might choose — in both rounds, but especially that all-important *2d round sleeper*!!

Point Guards. Note that I’m sorting guards by FG%
Shooting Guards
Small forwards. Note that I’m sorting forwards and centers by rebounding per game.
Power forwards
Centers.

Click at the top of a row to sort by that statistic. Note that you can change from “by game” to “by 40 minutes” which might make comparison a little easier.

Cool, huh?

On the numbers, the best likely available at 18:

Centers: Roy Hibbert and Jason Thompson
Power Forwards: Joey Dorsey and a few others, none of whom seem worth an 18th pick. You may see it differently.
Small Forwards: Here too, I don’t see an 18th pick. I don’t like Brandon Rush, for example.
Shooting Guards: Chris Douglas-Roberts, Shan Foster, J.R. Giddens — do any of these guys seem like they could possibly help the Wizards? Not to me…
Point Guards: Ty Lawson, Mario Chalmers… I like both those guys. Not sure if I’m right tho.

The place where 2d-rounders make themselves known is the Orlando Pre-Draft Camp.

DraftExpress coverage begins here.

Look through the DraftExpress archives for their coverage of the Portsmouth Invitational in April; that’s the other pre-draft camp second rounders come from (e.g. Carl Landry last year).

The more I look at the numbers, the better Ty Lawson looks. The main issue with him is his height — 5’11″ — which is obviously small even for a point guard. But, he is strong, can finish at the rim, and is incredibly quick.

A potential good 2d-rounder at the point (more of a combo guard, however) is Lester Hudson. His numbers are really great. At the same time, he is almost 24, so he probably doesn’t have much of an upside. Could drop to us in round 2 and be a good pick.

Jamont Gordon is another guy who could conceivably drop to us in Round 2 — like Lester Hudson he is more of a combo guard than a pure point guard.

Speaking of Jamont Gordon — check out this video. I *guarantee* you will watch it more than once!

If I thought they’d do it, I’d trade our first (#18) and second (#48) round choices to the Timberwolves for their two high second round choices (#31 and #34) or, if necessary, to the Blazers for theirs (#33 and #36).

Here are my top 5 at 18 and 48:

18
Kosta Koufos 7-0 252 Ohio St- Center (great upside, offensive skills)
JaVale McGee 7-0 237 Nevada- Center (diamond in the rough or bust)
Roy Hibbert 7-2 278 G-town- Center (personal workouts will factor in where he goes)
Robin Lopez 7-0 255 Stanford- Center (lot of energy on d-fense, no O)
Jason Thompson 6-10 245 Rider- PF (could be a steal at 18 based on potential)

48
Jamont Gordon 6-4 220 Miss. St.- PG (Tom, cross your fingers)
Lester Hudson 6-3 190 UT-Martin- PG (This kid is a player)
Richard Roby 6-6 205 Colorado- SG (R.Mason clone)
James Gist 6-8 223 Maryland- F (has NBA skills, with right team he could surprise)
Sean Singletary 6-0 180 Virginia ) I love this kid heart, must pass first to make it)

I got this feeling the WIZ will do a draft day trade this year. George Michael show this past weekend had Wiz possibly trading Gil, someone on the roster and maybe the first pick for Baron Davis and Andris Bierdrins. Somebody holler!
