Pre-Draft Camp Over, Individual Workouts Begin

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Well now that the Pre-Draft camp is officially over it is time to move onto individual workouts. The Wizards will start bringing in players later this week (sounds like they are currently scheduled to begin Thursday).

Assumming its thursday we will have announce who is coming on Wednesday afternoon/night, and we will have quotes and videos of all the players that come to DC for workouts.

Click here for a recap of day four of the camp. For day four the other 15 players that most likely will be high 1st rounders went through workouts. There’s a good chance many of those guys won’t be around at #18 but guys like Javale McGee could be there (although draftexpress says he didn’t look so good.).

Some Notes From Day 3

Friday, May 30th, 2008

A couple of notes from Day 3.
(all from draftexpress.com for more information Click here. One big name that did not compete in Day 3 was Ty Lawson who sat out with a Hip Pointer.

Mike Taylor - One player that stood out more than anyone else in the individual drills was D-League combo guard Mike Taylor, a phenomenal athlete blessed with terrific scoring instincts who was deadly creating his own shot in 1 on 1 settings

Bryce Taylor - Had a nice all-around showing playing strong defense, knocking down shots and looking very crafty in the isolation-based drills.

Brian Roberts- Had a very strong performance as well (17 points, 5/7 FG, 1/1 3P), doing a great job mixing up his mid-range game with his dribble-drives, either finishing strong at the rim or getting to the free throw line (6-6 in this game). He seems to have significantly improved his ability to smoothly change speeds and keep his defender off-balance, which we just happened to watch him work on a few weeks back when we saw him

Wayne Ellington - Wayne Ellington bounced back in a big way after his disastrous performance yesterday, starting off extremely hot on his way to a 7-13, 17 point outing in 20 minutes

Pat Calathes - Wasn’t quite as good as he was yesterday, but he continued his pattern of impressive play dating all the way back to Portsmouth where he showed a terrific ability to fit in quickly on a team and both make himself look good as well as others around him.

James Gist - Had a worse stat-line today (6 points, 3-10 FG) than he did yesterday, but in our eyes played better this time around. He looked very active defensively in the passing lanes and did a great job getting out in transition, using his athleticism well around the rim and even knocking down a long-range perimeter jumper.

Mark Tyndale - stood out for the second straight game with the excellent versatility he brings to the floor. He can really do everything except shoot the ball effectively, whether it’s distribute, defend, get to the rim or play his typical energetic and heady style of basketball.

Jeremy Pargo - Underclassman Jeremy Pargo had a stronger performance in game two (11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 turnovers) than yesterday’s outing, doing a fantastic job showing off his incredible physical tools and getting into the paint time after time.

Gary Forbes - Clearly the best player on the floor (and likely of the day) stringing together one of the best single-game performances (30 points, 7-16 FG, 15-16 FT, 26 minutes) we’ve seen in the last five years of the pre-draft camp. Forbes was incredibly aggressive putting the ball on the floor with either hand and making very strong moves to the basket, being very physical once there and in turn getting to the free throw line at will.

Richard Hendrix - Did his best Paul Millsap impression, doing yeomen’s work on the offensive glass, picking up 6 rebounds on that end in just 22 minutes. He struggled to finish most of his shots inside, though, being unable to elevate quite high enough in traffic.

Lester Hudson - Had yet another uneven performance in game two, alternating between displaying fantastic scoring instincts and creativity and forcing the issues badly at times and making bad decisions. He clearly is an A+ shooter, both from the perimeter and especially creating separation from his defender with smooth body control from mid-range, but needs to show better patience deciding when to shoot.

Sean Singletary - Had a nice showing, displaying excellent creativity and court-vision distributing the ball, and also being very aggressive as a scorer, finishing the game with an impressive 15 points and 8 assists. He may have over-dribbled at times and is likely kicking himself for missing all three of his attempts from beyond the arc, but it was good for him to break out of his shell here finally.

Maarty Leunen - Is never going to stand out in a setting like this, as there will always be bigger, more athletic players to ooh and ah over, but he once again showed his toughness, smarts and terrific skill-level by knocking down the shots that were presented to him, running the floor hard, competing on the defensive end, doing an excellent job on the glass, and not making even a single mistake.

Day Two of NBA Pre-Draft Camp

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Hey everyone, Tom touched on it in the previous post with a few comments. But here’s a basic breakdown of some of the players performance in Day Two of the camp from draftexpress.com. For the full article Click Here.

Guys They Liked
George Hill (IUPUI) - “In the first game we liked the way the extremely smooth George Hill conducted himself—his wingspan made him a presence defensively and he clearly has a high basketball IQ and excellent perimeter shooting ability.”

Joey Dorsey and Devin Hardin - “It was nice to see Joey Dorsey and Devon Hardin being active and getting after it. The two most sculpted players in the camp did a great job making their presence felt defensively and on the glass, which is exactly what NBA teams want to see from them.”

Othello Hunter - “Possibly the player that helped himself the most in the first game was Ohio State’s Othello Hunter. He went 6 for 7 from the field in 20 minutes—knocking down a mid-range jumper, showing slightly more skill in the paint than we’d seen in the past, and using his extremely impressive length and athleticism to run the floor and make his presence felt inside the paint.”

Mike Taylor -”Also a very pleasant surprise was the play of D-League product Mike Taylor—a 6-2 combo guard in the Louis Williams mold with freakish athleticism and terrific scoring instincts. He got to the basket at will, made some nice plays pulling up from mid-range, finished with a nifty floater, and hit one of his three 3-pointers (something scouts will be scrutinizing closely here).”

Joe Crawford -”Had a very strong game with 19 points on 6-11 shooting, thanks to an extremely hot and aggressive start that kept his team in the game.”

Gary Forbes - “Gary Forbes was clearly the best player on the winning team. He looked extremely instinctive putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the rack, getting to the free throw line repeatedly and finishing impressively around the cup.”

Richard Hendrix - “Richard Hendrix had a solid outing with 12 points and 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. He was extremely unselfish and did a great job crashing the glass,”

Pat Ewing Jr. - “Had a quietly effective game with 14 points on 5-7 shooting, impressively hitting an NBA 3-pointer, getting on the offensive glass, and playing well in transition.”

James Gist - “James Gist scored 16 points and had 5 rebounds on 5-8 shooting, mostly by running the floor and finishing around the hoop.”

Ty Lawson - “Ty Lawson was a cut above everyone else on the floor here, showing incredible quickness taking an outlet pass and getting his team out in transition, and fantastic court vision finding open teammates on the move.”

Pat Calathes - “Pat Calathes only got to play 15 minutes (sitting an extensive amount of time between stints), but really made the most of his time out on the floor, scoring 10 points and dishing off 5 assists (compared to just one turnover), many of the spectacular variety”

J.R. Giddens
- “J.R. Giddens forced the issue with his weak ball-handling skills a little too much at times, but still flashed great potential with some of the moves he made at times. His talent is undeniable, he just needs to polish up his skill-set. ”

Lester Hudson - “Lester Hudson showed mostly a mixed bag on both ends of the floor, struggling defensively trying to contain Ty Lawson, while showing nice creativity and vision with some occasional passes but also looking too lackadaisical making sloppy scoops that led to turnovers. There is no question that the guy can play, but he remains fairly unpolished at this point. ”

Reggie Williams - “Reggie Williams gave maybe the best effort of anyone in this game, playing fantastic defense and picking his spots nicely offensively.”

Players They Didn’t Like
Davon Jefferson, Danny Green, Jeremy Pargo, Wayne Ellington, Shan Foster

Pre-Draft Orlando Camp Lists

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Hello everyone, the Pre-Draft Camp lists just were announced with a list of the participants and the players just receiving physicals. Click here for the list.

Last season the Wizards were impressed by an athletic small forward from Fresno State at this very camp and ended up selecting Dominic McGuire in the 2nd round. Usually this camp is a chance for players who probably won’t be taken in round 1 to shine. Anyway, if there is a player you find intriguing or would like the Wizards to take in round 2 please post away, and of course if you would like to continue debating the Wizards first round selection you are also more than welcome to do that.

Hey everyone, NBA.Com put up of the top prospects in the upcoming draft. You can check them out by clicking here.

I know a lot of people have said they dont have an idea on some players so hopefully this should help out. The list will continue to grow, I’m guessing more players will show up once they hire an agent (remember players can declare for the draft go through the process and then back out if they haven’t signed an agent).
