Game Five @ Cleveland
7:14am Hey Everyone, SportzWiz checking in. Obviously its win or go home time for the Wizards. This team has responded all year with their back against the wall and they will try to do it once again tonight. Team arrived yesterday afternoon and they are excited with the opportunity to bring this back to dc for game six.
As for the blog, unfortunately Dave Johnson is attending to some family issues and was unable to make the trip. Therefore I will be running the blog from my spot in quicken loans arena. Michael Reghi will be taking over play-by-play duties for Dave tonight. Him and Glenn have actually worked together in the past doing college games so the announcing will be spot on hopefully I can keep up my end of the bargain on the blog. I will be heading to shootaround around 11:15 so if you have any questions on that please let me know. Game starts at 6:00 pm tonight and can be seen on TNT, Comcast Spportsnet or listened to on WTEM 980, I’ll make sure to put the link up prior to the game. GO WIZ!
Hey everyone, I just got back from shootaround. I got some photos from shootaround and also of the Cavaliers setting up their fan fest. If you’ve never been to cleveland Progressive (Jacobs) Field is right next to Quicken Loans Arena. Right between them is a little grassy area and they have set up some games for fans before hand. Anyway Click here to check them out.
Here are a few videos from shootaround.

Phonebooth, I’m jealous that you’re going. On a down note, I saw the article on Pollin today. He has looked horrible whenever he has been at games and he no longer sits in his suite. However, if he wanted to win so bad, he should have not handicapped Grunfeld financially. This year, Earl The Pearl reminded me that he was traded to the Knicks for monetary reasons. Sure, Pollin celebrated him. Instead, he should have kept him. Abe may be one of those that just can’t bring himself to spend money. Oh yea, I know he “built” the Verizon Center. Don’t think that wasn’t for making money and he’s making plenty of it. I just think it’s disengenuous to ask them to “win one for the gipper” when he didn’t do all that he could as owner to win.

SportzWiz-
Antawn has been very quiet this series (verbally) and he is our team captain. Can you ask him what his thoughts are about Deshawn and everyone doing so much yapping? And if he could change anything pre-game 1 regarding the way we’ve handled the media, would he. I know Eddie has a policy of trusting the players to represent themselves, but this obviously has failed (which is why he put the curfew on the team at the end of the season). Seems like he needs to put a curfew on their mouths as well. Hopefully we can pull this out. CLE is only -4.5 tonight which makes me think Vegas likes us (everyone is taking CLE).

Yea – pretty lame that Cavs fans come on this blog.
It’s pretty ridiculous what the media has done to this series. Totally blown everything out of proportion. I also think it’s funny how LeBron said ‘If i knew he hit me with a closed fist…something would have elevated on the streets’. Sorry LeBron, it wasn’t a closed first. And secondly, I think DeShawn even got a piece of the ball. Way too big a deal made of the ‘hard fouls’. This is the playoffs. The media has basically stated that the Wizard’s only goal in this series is to come out and hit Lebron James. Thats garbage.
Also gotta love how they secretly assessed Lebron a flagrant for when he elbowed Blatche. Sick of how the NBA has bowed down to LeBron and change their rules for him as well as give him every call.
Sick of LeBron and all his righteousness.

“something would have elevated on the streets” if that came outa his mouth than he should have been fined at least if DS got one for the slash that D.Jones dose all the time.. LBJ should have got one for saying things of that nature.. not only that i dont think he wants to see DS on a street to say the least

Well it has been a pleasure once again. Maybe next year you will get to play against another team in the first round becasue you will never get past the Cavs. I have a feeling it willbe a blowout tonight. I am going to the game and I’m going to say every word in the book to your thugs Deshawna and Brenda. No need to talk trash to Gil because he is not a factor. Also Lebron in the streets with Deshawna would be a first round knockout just like the Cavs vs you in the first round playoffs. The only people who are doing all the talking and nonsense is coming from your Wizards. Cavs just put up the numbers and win. Thanks again for another first round bye though.

This was how he was quoted in the NBA.com recap:
“If we was on the park, something definitely would have escalated,” James said. “But, you know, I guess that’s what they want to do. They want to hurt LeBron James this series. It ain’t working.”
Talking in third person now? Please, he’s letting the NBA’s brown-nosing get to his head.
Man I hope we get tonight’s game. Is that too much to ask?

BrickJP – the Internet allows “e-thugs” to post their hate wherever they see fit. It may be lame, but they just want to be heard while hiding behind a computer monitor. Taking the high road – I just read their stuff and let them be. If we don’t reply back to their comments, then their words have no power and will just die in cyberspace. Once you invoke them, you become like one of them.
This is actually the 3rd straight year I’ve read the same stuff from Cleveland fans. I do find it odd that Cavs fans find so much enjoyment getting Wiz fans riled up when this is only the first round of the playoffs. I mean – they still need to win 9 more games before they get back to the Finals.
Lastly, it doesn’t make sense to me at all with sports teams bashing when the facts show both cities suffer from a drought of championship banners:
Last Championship Year
NFL:
– CLE (1964 – NFL championship; Superbowl not “created” yet)
– WSH (1991)
NBA:
– CLE (never)
– WSH (1978)
NHL:
– CLE (N/A)
– WSH (never)
MLB:
– CLE (1948)
– WSH (1924 – World Champions for Senators; World Series not “created” yet)
MLS:
– CLE (actually Columbus – never)
– WSH (2004)
LeBron may be the current savior of Cavs basketball, but there is no guarantee he’s bringing the Larry O’Brien trophy home.

How could anybody on that team still be talking at this point in the series when they’re down 3-1 and almost out for the third year in a row by the hands the Cavs. What I am really looking forward to is your pathetic excuses on the blog come tomorrow after we do elimate the Wizards again

First off let me say this. If i catch anyone swearing from here on out on the blog today you will be thrown off the blog. Ive tried my best to get that message across and people continue to not listen.
2nd I wouldn’t make those types of comments about Mr. Pollin. The man is the longest tenured owner in the league, he buillt the MCI center (ask yourself how many owners would make that investment) and completely changed the chinatown area in the process. He right now is paying three all-stars money so please keep the comments clean when it involves him
3rd Antawn and Caron have been verbally quiet these playoffs. That’s their personality. each guy is a little different and those two guys don’t get into all the talking back and forth just not their style.

I hope everybody is ready for the offseason. It starts for the wizards tonite. In the past I would agonize over such words. Not to give the wizards a chance is blasphemous, but it is true. The truth is …the wizards aren’t Ready To Rule. For a few different reasons.Lack of established identity, lack of discipline, and the coaching staff’s lack of leadership.
All of which I lay at the feet of the coaching staff, and head office.
How competent do you have to be as a coaching staff to say .Timeout..Stop jackin up shots from the perimeter, and attack the rim.work the offense or sit down.U don’t watch your team come unfurled, and go on a me for all,and all u can do is admit that the inmates run the assylum.I’ve never heard a coach at post game say that the team didn’t listen to him until now.Heck,Bernie Bickerstaff never let that one out the bag.And can somebody tell these analyst that the gesture that deshawn does after a make means..”I can’t feel my face.” Had to get that out the way, because if I hear one more mention of “he is invisible or you can’t see him” ,i’ma throw a brick through my screen
wake up and realize that Gilbert Arenas is not a point guard, nor is he the star player of the wizards.EJ has all of this we need Gil talk as if only he can save the team. This team beat the celts w/o Gil.a team of 3 all stars, and a emerging bench. Now you are down to an elimenation game to one exceptional all star and a role players who seem to embrace their roles .The wizards problems are all in their heads, but before they take the court they need to decide whether they are gonna commit to the game, and play together,or continue to be the circus they have been since game 1. This team is embarrassing because what they don’t know is that everything they are doing is what fake tough guys do. Even in the streets we know that ,the ones who talk the most do so because they don’t have the substance to do more than talk and they know it. the realest ones let their moves speak for them. Heart runsdeeper than bulletin board material, and shortsighted grandstanding. While the wiz are in flux, unorganized and sloppy;Lebron is showing the leadership, and poise, that only champions have. He’s leading by example while he and his team keep their eyes on the prize. You wanna be considered upper echelon one day wizards…stop bringing butterknives to gunfights, and come to play.the hawks are showing more scrap then the wiz. Mayb next year

Hey DC – if you’re a fan, you never give up on your team. Everyone knows that – that you never give up. You don’t think Eddie told the guys to attack the rim? Please. Everyone is SO quick to blame Eddie. 4 Straight years in the playoffs. When was the last time that happened? We were 0-5 this year and we lost Gilbert. Maybe we should have given up then? OHHH right you don’t give up! Just like this team didn’t give up.
Lebron is showing the leadership and poise? He basically threatened DeShawn in the streets. Real classy there. And again, *it was not a closed fist*. Apparently whatever Lebron says now is just taken as the truth. I mean, Lebron said it, therefore, it just is, right? Give me a break.
Here’s to not giving up on the Wizards. I am going to root for them just like any other night. I’m not going to go into the game expecting to lose, like some of you seem to be doing. But thats fine, fairweather fans only stick by the team when they are winning.

I missed my question opportunity – but if it is not too late, I have one ? for the coach:
Will the Wizards explore the possibility of “Hack-a-Ben” (Wallace)?
I would certainly use this tactic if the Wiz somehow get down double digits. Fouls are to be used for stuff like this – not the flagrant nonsense going around in EVERY FIRST ROUND SERIES. I mean, the Spurs used the Hack-a-Shaq strategy perfectly against Phoenix. The Wizards need every allowable tactic to highlight the atrocious free throw shooting of the Cavaliers.

^ Hey Fusion – Eddie addressed that yesterday I think? He basically said he is totally against it. But who knows, maybe in the 2nd half if we are in dire straits hey may change his mind.
But we need to go in this game with the mindset that we can come home on Friday for Game 6. Take it one game at a time. A lot of people have forgotten, but there is a basketball game to be played tonight.

Whoa – I just read Avery Johnson got dismissed, aka fired, as Mavs coach. Shocking.
This leads me to an Eddie Jordan comment. I know a lot of people have made some comments about Eddie’s coaching abilities, but the thing is this – he’s really the only coach for this group of Wizards. Most NBA insiders credit Eddie Jordan for getting the NJ Nets to the Finals and not Byron Scott. Eddie has shown confidence in an up-and-coming Arenas back in 2003 and he’s demonstrated his prowess this season by guiding the Wizards back into the playoffs minus Arenas for 60+ games and Butler for 20+ games.
Eddie, in my opinion, is a players’ coach. Once you have a group of veteran players around, Eddie’s tutelage (when the players buy into the Princeton Offense), does work in a team with a lot of offensively skilled guys (like Washington). The younger guys need to earn their trust with Eddie before he lets you go out there.

i’ve been a fan since the eighties too,and i’m not for the wiz giving up.What i’m also not for is being satisfied just because they made the playoffs four times in a row. When there seem to be issues with the team that don’t comprise of being a player away from being good .the Wiz can beat anyone when they play together. In my opinion this team can is a mental adjustment away from winning the east.Maybe i should question the fanhood of anyone who settles for making the first round a must see.u don’t hear that in Utah or San Antonio. I endured the lean years too,but that doesn’t mean that I should settle for mediocrity just because I’ve seen worst times. u neva know, the wiz may neva see a roster with the talent that this one has. Maybe now is the time, and maybe if the team was more about business more of us might feel that way.The wizards have more than most of us think, but poise, execution, and accountability make a champion. And Brick…I feel where u are coming from too,but to me the Wiz are underachieving in the playoffs, they have all they need right now today 2 beat anyone.Yet it’s obvious on the court that they don’t really seem to know what they want.As far as blaming EJ .U get the big bucks to coach.Coach.Again Lebron is leading by example he’s trusting in teammates, letting the game come to him,and he’s leaving the petty to the petty. And keeping focused. He understands the trickle down effect of too much mouthing off,on his team, and their focus. The Wiz in contrast don’t seem to care or know.I’m a fan for sure, but I’m a realist 2.peace ya’ll

Okay… this goes out to d.c. & kingjamesawizardkiller… and all other HATERS. I can’t begin to tell you how IGNORANT you sound. Just like the MEDIA, you all are all hyping up Lebron like his the best player ever to play the game of basketball. So let me tell you why that will NEVER BE… He is too stuck up and ARROGANT to ever be the best ever. I don’t think any TRUE WIZARDS FAN ever said that he couldn’t play… but I agree that he is OVERRATED and I truly believe it’s because of his EGO and ARROGANCE. Every team in the NBA, no matter what their record is, has a STAR and their STAR-supporters. It’s a shame that the ONLY time you hear ANYTHING about anyone else on the Cleveland team is when they take a shot, winning the game at the buzzard. Then what do they do? They turn around and give Lebron the GREATEST ASSIST play of the game.
The REAL difference in the WIZARDS & the cav’s is WE ARE A TEAM of ALL PLAYERS who are ALL capable of achieving and all the cav’s have is thier QUEEN and his followers.
Win or lose… I am a FAN FOR LIFE…
Oh, but I do have ONE QUESTION for you haters… What ever happened to that LIE about Lebron’s hurt back? I GUARANTEE ANYBODY… the next couple of games the cav’s lose, he will be complaining about his back again…

^ DC – I am with you when you say you aren’t satisfied with making the playoffs. And yea, I think we have some amazing talent and some great guys on our squad. With that said, not much long ago, we were the laughing stock of the league. We started the season knowing we wouldn’t make the playoffs. Fans would go to the games to see the visiting teams. So I can be content that we are way past that.
Sometimes, in sports – you can’t be realistic. Obviously we have a very small chance of winning this series at this point. However, I am looking at only tonight’s game with the hope that we can cram the Verizon Center one more time this year (at least). I want that game 6.

Well, it is going to take our all if we are going to overcome the Cavs and Zebras in this game. I mean, did you guys see the opening jump ball? They threw it right to Z. All I’m saying is they better call a moving pick on Verejao or Z because they are always moving on those picks.

A very short-hand summary….verrrry because my memory lol.
He basically talked about the whole situation, thinking that it was blown out of proportion because his teammate (Stevenson) decided to speak his opinion about lebron, which would be the overrated comment. Despite it all though, he just spoke of having to just play the game of basketball with their backs being against the wall.
Hope this helps…

Above all a great defensive effort. We held them to 36% shooting, and we hung with them on the boards.
If you had told me Haywood and Jamison’s lines before the game, I would have expected a blowout loss. Instead, Butler and Daniels stepped up big time, and everyone played D.

I’m going to honor my word earlier – I will go to Game 6 Friday.
I’m a bit jealous @ blogger PhoneBooth being live for Game 5.
Just when people were a bit down with why Caron hasn’t been playing at his all-star level, he comes up and saved the Wiz season. Against LeBron. And on the road in Cleveland. What an incredible player and I still cringe with happiness how Washington got him for Kwame Brown.
I hope all the regular bloggers here enjoy the win: from LilGil in Europe to Bridge in Wisconsin to others back in DC/Virginia/Maryland.

This one sure makes the game friday at HOME a little special! Very nice defensive effort by just about everyone. We finally beat the Cavs on their home court! AD and Caronimo had great games and Antawn and Haywood had lousy ones yet we still win. Just think… if we get solid games from “everyone” we would run them off the court. After winning tonight and having a realistic chance to at least tie at the end of the 4th in the last one I think we could win this series. If we win friday we will definately have the momentum going into Sunday.
Give me a C. Here ya go Bud … “C”. Gotta admit though. I’m happier to give you the “L”.

YEAH ZARDS!
we win another game after being cheated by the NBA again. Did anyone catch the opening tip of the game where the wonderful NBA refs basically just gave the ball to the CAV’S and Big “Z”. I really wish David Stern our wonderful commissioner would re-evaluate the Wizards vs. CAV’s series again. He fines Deshawn 25K for making a gesture to JAY-Z in game 4 and finally gives Mr. Lebron “OVERATED” James a flagrant foul for his elbow to Blatche’s head in game one 11 days after it occured. How does that help the Wizards did we get a free throw and the ball back tonight to start the game NO! Lebron thinks he is the next Jordan but all he and his teamates do is look for the refs to bail them out. When have you seen a foul not called on the Wizards where the CAV’s players haven’t had there hand’s up crying to the refs. Really never if you’ve watched the first 5 games of this series. And on the second to last play of the game where CB3 aka Tough Juice got it done for the Zards and drove to the basket he wasn’t fouled. PLEASE….if that was LEBRON that would have clearly been an and 1. Thankfully Butler is man enough to finish the play regardless and give us the lead. And of course on the final play what does Lebron do….miss a game winning shot and proceed to adjust hit wrist band look up at the JUMBO and wonder why he didn’t get a phantom call as usual. News for you LEBRON you get 99.9 percent of the calls and tonight wasn’t one of them. Were not having any of that and were not gonna have any in game 6 in D.C. I love Brenden Haywood’s comments about Lebron crying….and we all know its gonna continue in D.C. in game 6, all we can hope is the refs don’t get influenced by one of the best actors in the NBA again. Need I say anything about how Lebron made it look like Darius hit him in his throat tonight when in actuality after reviewing the replay he had Darius’ arm wrapped around him and caused him to hit him in his fragile face. GO Wizards….and hopefully we can get a fair game called at home in game 6

I have to agree with Phemy – WOW. Crazy night for me. Watched the first half – went and played some ball, taped the second and my DVR messes up – with THREE minutes left in the 4th. So angry I couldn’t see it, but I got my wish – WE HAVE A GAME SIX.
Caron Butler – what can you say? I’ve been saying it all year. Caron is the man. There’s a reason he’s my favorite player. He is truly a special player and person. And he dedicated tonight’s game to Abe too.
I’m just happy for the team. From the players to all the coaches, everyone. And especially us bloggers. We deserved this one. We didn’t give up on our team. We just won in Cleveland. Do you know how much confidence our guys have now? I mean, we just won IN Cleveland.
And we all knew it would come down to the final possession and we did it. Can’t wait for game six on Friday. I will be LOUD and proud of my Wiz.

Oh yeah, I forgot to share that I was able to actually do something this past Sunday; I played street ball with the fam. Man guys, I suck. My team won – I scored a whole 2 points! My offense may be a bit, uh, off…But my defense is solid. I found out that I’m a shoot-first person, but boy, those shots weren’t even close to going in. I did though miss those shots with class. Then my big-bro would get impatient with me because I refused to run after his awful passes – I think he needs glasses or something. But what I look like running after a ball? That was sooo fun.
Well, let me get to bed now because I NEED a lil sleep. I KNEW that we could do it…and we could do it on Friday too…

sorry i havnt been like usual when this blog started a few years ago. its great to see how it has grew. but for one hope all is well for your dad Dave. Hope to hear from you soon.
other then that glad the ref didnt blow the whistle the last play. i remember when the refs let the players play in the final seconds and its great to see that happen last night. i def think we deserved the win. the team that played fair really deserved it. unlike cleveland pushing us on every rebound. big ups to tough juice for showing his leadership. i just read this from the post:
Caron Butler: “Don’t judge this team by comments,” he said. “LeBron made a statement: ‘these guys are talkers’ but unless you hear something from the captains, which would be myself and Antawn, don’t label that as the team. I’m the voice of this team and Antawn is the spiritual and emotional leader so unless you hear it from one of us, keep it moving.”
