Game Day Bucks
5:20 AM ET….I guess I don’t have to say Eastern Time anymore…Dave Johnson checking in as we get set for something different–a home game….I know there will be a lot of buzz now that the word is that Gilbert Arenas has been cleared to return to game action. That does not mean he will play tonight….keep in mind… the Wizards had yesterday off and did not practice after returning from the west coast trip….Wizards can clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Bucks and a Pacers loss to the Celtics…..keep you posted throughout the day….BLOGCAST starts at 7…hope you can listen and blog with us
11:22am…..SportzWiz checking in. Just got back from shootaround, here’s the latest news. Caron and Antonio are going to give it a go. Antonio’s wrist is really bothering him, but as he said at this point he just has to go through it and he’ll deal with it after the season. Caron also said he is going to play tonight. He went through shootaround and felt really good, he said 48 hours off really helped his body. On the Gilbert front, it looks as though he will NOT play tonight. He did not go through shootaround today, although as Caron said, Gilbert loves the “shock” factor and you just never know with him. I’ll have quotes coming soon.
12:45pmHere are quotes from today’s shootaround.
Eddie Jordan
On injuries
“Antoino (Daniels) is going to try it, and Caron’s still a game-time-decision. He went through shootaround. He looked good and we’ll see how he is tonight.”
On tonight’s game
“It’s an important game, I’m not looking at anything past tonight, and that’s how we’ve been successful.”
On changing lineups
“It’s been a great challenge. It’s something that everyday as a coaching staff we look on our roster and see who can practice and who can’t and what may change between the time we construct practice to the time that practice actually happens. We’ve seen to always have to adlib as we go along, and noone said this job was going to be that easy.”
On when he expects Arenas back on the court
“When he’s ready to play.”
On the first game back from a long road trip
“It’s always true the first one is tough. Our bodies are trying to catch up with the travel and I don’t know why it is that way, but we hope that being home again will help us.”
On Milwaukee’s Backcourt
“They are very explosive. Mo (Williams) is very good with the ball and has given us some trouble. Their are other guys, Bogut’s very good for them and Charlie Villanueva is aggressive scoring the ball. We have to be ready for a very difficult game tonight.”
On Gilbert getting back into a rhythm
“It will be very difficult for him. That bridge we will cross when we come to it.”
Antonio Daniels:
On being back home
“It’s great to be back at home. When it’s this late in the season and you had a nine day road trip it’s always good to comeback to the friendly confines of Verizon Center.”
On what Arenas brings to the team
“Obviously with Gilbert in the mix we are much different basketball team and a much better basketball team. It makes us a lot more dangerous, it makes our bench a lot better. So as soon as we get him out there the better we will be.”
On his wrist
“It feels ok. Throughout this time of the year I don’t really feel comfortable sitting out games and it’s something we will address when the season is over. We have different guys that bumped and bruised and have been doing it throughout the course of the year. It’s playoff push time, it’s the most important time of the season and this is when we want to be playing our best basketball.”
On Arenas being cleared to play
“It’s very exciting. The sooner we get him back the better we are. It makes us a much different basketball team. We are a lot more dangerous because we have three guys on the floor that can score 20 points a game. Now with the way guys have played throughout the season it makes us a much deeper basketball team.”
On working Arenas back into the rotation
“I don’t think it will be that hard, especially when you have veterans on this team that have played together for quite some time.”
Caron Butler
On his status for tonight
“I’ll definitely play tonight. These 48 hours did my body justice. So I’ll definitely play tonight.”
More on his injured hamstring
“It felt good during shootaround. I ran pretty hard for the course of the shootaround and I felt pretty good.”
On the upcoming stretch of games
“It is an important stretch, you just have to endure the pain because its a tough stretch and we just want to earn a playoff spot.”
On working Arenas back into the rotation
“We know each other’s tendencies, and we can adapt to the circumstances. As basketball players you can play on any court with anybody. He’s a great player so he can make the right adjustments and hopefully he’ll have a couple games to do that before the playoffs.”
On what he brings to the team
“We have beaten a lot of quality teams withouth him, with him back I think we can compete for the Eastern Conference.”
On potentially clinching a playoff spot tonight
“It would feel great to clinch a spot tonight. That’s what we are trying to do, clinch a spot, and get some momentum going into the playoffs.”
6:25 ET…Dave Johnson checking in…Caron Butler is a game time decision….Gilbert did not go through shoot around…..but still no clear word on his return…remember you can listen by clicking the link at the top of the page.

i had a strong feeling agent zero would be cleared to play. i really hope he plays tonight. i get the feeling that when he gets up off the bench and goes to the scorer’s table, verizon center will cave in from the ovation he will receive. based on aznzero’s post, i think in terms of playing time he will get as much as pecherov gets, which is hardly any.
LilGil, funny thing you mentioned about the 17-point deficit bits. clearly i understand where you are coming from with that, nobody likes to see the wizards fall behind by that much, but i would rather take that with a W at the end of the night instead of a near-50 point blowout against utah.. i’m so glad i missed that game otherwise i’d be a little pissed off still about it.

Well, Antonio says he is playing tonight, and we just have to hope Caron can too. We are not the same team w/o our best players, obviously.
Given the relatively easy schedules that Toronto and Philadelphia have over the next 5 games, we need every win we can get if we are to finish #5 in the East.
To be honest, however, I wouldn’t be overly upset if we finished #7. I’d like to see a series against the Pistons; I think it would be competitive and fun to watch. Finishing 7 would also move us up 2 picks in the draft, which I’m already thinking about.
It’s very tricky picking in the middle of the 1st round. Our ‘06 pick, Pech, is already looking like he might be a wasted pick (Josh Boone, Rajon Rondo, Kyle Lowry, Marcus Williams, and Renaldo Balkman — *all of whom* are playing and productive — were picked right after him). Maybe he’ll still prove out — hope so.
In the meantime — lets get the Bucks tonight!

last post got cut off…
in regards to gilbert, i would not be surprised if he does or doesn’t play tonight. i understand there are only a handful of games left in the season but he needs to get into a basketball rhythm before the playoffs so he can be ready for game 1 vs. lebron in DC (yes, i said DC.. we are without a doubt catching the cavs for 4th place). if he doesn’t make his return tonight then i would suspect no later than friday against the miami freeze, er, heat. that would probably be a good game for him to come back in, but who’s to say he wouldn’t come back tonight against milwaukee.. gilbert is just being gilbert.
also regarding gilbert and his recent interview about his opt-out, i commend that he is willing to take a pay cut in order to keep the team intact. i had a discussion with a friend over dinner about the wizards, and we both stated that if we keep the team intact, there is a strong possibility with the following roster (Arenas, Stevenson, Haywood, Jamison, Butler, Daniels, Mason, Young, McGuire, Pecherov, Songaila, Blatche, and Thomas) that we can win an NBA championship. every sports analyst/network has stated that if the wizards can stay healthy for an 82-game campaign, watch out KG.. watch out superman.. watch out lebron. i would say that the change for washington to win a championship either in 08-09 or 09-10 are good, but only if we resign arenas, jamison, and mason.

I know guys..Gil is acting really strange….
First he wanted to come back agasint the Pistons…then according to the Washington Post he had already been cleared to play on Saturday…so if he wanted to he could have played agasint the Lakers..there is no bigger game on our schedule than the Lakers except for maybe the Celtics….
Opposed to all of you WOULDNT like to Caron out there tonight..for some strange reason he ALWAYS gets injured when we play them…first the broken hand then the hip….but i guess its not my decision….
GO WIZARDS
P.S. i will be blogging tonight…i rarely blog on late games thats why you guys havent seen me on here all that much at game time during the last week or so…

Man y’all, I’m a TRUE Gilbert Arenas fan (don’t get me wrong), but all this mixed information is kinda crazy – I’m almost to the point where I’m like I kinda don’t care anymore. I like a lot of hype but this whole return thing has been taken out of proportion because info is clashing; first it’s him saying that he’s possibly playing on certain date(s). Then here comes EJ with a statement almost completely opposite of his. Then the article that wiz-skins posted on yesterday’s blog (thanks by the way) says something different from what I read on http://www.gilbertology.net – GOSH!! Then who the hell are these “close sources” – a ‘close source’ said…” I just read these things now for entertainment or now I’m just starting not to read them at all. Everyone’s credibility now is just shot (meaning terrible)…gone…out the window. I just can’t believe anything or anyone right now – not a word. C’mon Gil, you talked about being honest and stuff…what’s up with all this???
I won’t be able to blog tonight because I’m hella busy, so whoever does have fun…and cheer for us who won’t be. Be careful about Milwaukee though cuz lately they’ve been havin those 100-something point games…
GO WIZARDS!!

Honestly if Gil doesn’t come back (I think he definitely won’t but anyway) I don’t think he will friday, for two obvious reasons: first I won’t be able to watch the game friday and everybody know Gilbert’s return can’t happend without me (neither without any of you guys of course!) and second Gil not playing tonight shows that he isn’t looking for no “easy” game to start with and Miami is definitely gonna be an “easy” (or D-league as you wish) game so why would he?. The fact is that with not playing tonight he “wastes” an opportunity of getting ready for the playoffs which is actually what matters the most right now so what are we supposed to understand? I don’t even know wheter the comments he’ll add to the decision of not playing will be helpful I mean that’s Gilbert lol…

Two things.
A. I will be heading down to shootaround to find out whatever I can about tonight’s game.
B. The Wizards can clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Bucks and a Celtics win over the Pacers. So if you feel like cheering on the Celtics (and I don’t recommend doing that for any game but tonight) that game will be on ESPN at 7:00pm.

I know gil will play tonight..”I hope at least.” But im not worry about that. I just hope that Caron can come back tonight 2 and if we win and the pacers lose which i know is goin to happen against Boston come on now. We can clinch a playoff spot and that would be really nice. I also see that yall are some big Gilbert fans. Well i am too. Any ways thats not the point. The point im tryin to get across is that we can get gil and tuff juice back tonight and we can win this game and clinch the playoff spot tonight cuz i know for sure that boston is goin to beat the pacers tonight. OK guys blog in with yall later.

I won free tickets, too, aznzero! BruceO, can’t help you out, I am definitely using mine! Really looking forward to it. I hope Gil plays just because I’ll be there tonight, but if not, no big deal. It seems to me that tonight might be a good time for him to come back and just get his feet wet in an NBA game. He hasn’t played in one in so long that he needs to give it a shot if he wants to be ready for the playoffs. He could play a little bit tonight, not too much pressure, and play a little bit in Miami, again not too much pressure, and build his minutes back up so he’ll be ready for the playoffs.
I am not a doctor or an expert of any kind, just giving my uneducated opinion.

I think now would be a GREAT TIME for Gil to come back. He could play 5 minutes and I’d be satisfied. I just want to see him with a Wizards uniform on and a ball in his hand. I am also going to the game (for college night) and I think playing in front of all his hometown fans, especially the poor college kids who cant usually come would be awesome, lol.
Besides, the Bucks aren’t really known for their winning record, so I don’t anticipate us struggling too much. If we can get off to a good start out of the gate we shouldn’t have a problem. He can take his time and play as few minutes as he desires, as long as it’s not 0…

“My feeling is, I’m all ready to go out there and play, and mentally I’m past that fear of getting hurt again and now you’re telling me I can’t play?†Arenas said the night of the Pistons game. “So I’m thinking that if you tell me a week, I need to take two weeks and make sure.â€
I don’t buy this one bit. You all saw how excited Gilbert was to come play Sunday versus Detroit – he’s ready. I believe Gilbert will put on a show tonight for the crowd and get ready for the playoffs where we’ll truly need him the most.
The only other time I see him comming back is Wed. April 9th, against the Celtics. This will be an ESPN game and we know that’s the reason he wanted to come back for the Pistons.

I see tonight’s game as a must win. What an opportunity to lock up a playoff spot by taking on an opponent not poised to make the playoffs + the Pacers having to deal with the Celtics.
The last time the Bucks were in town, neither team showed any interior defense as guys were just slashing to the basket for easy buckets. Charlie Villanueva had a great shooting game but wasn’t able to come through in the 4th quarter. Redd just took it to the hole ala LeBron and the Wizards didn’t have any plan to slow him down. Wizards did win that game but it was not the best display of team defense.
I find it odd that all the “good” injured players are coming back at the same time: Arenas, Brand, Gasol, and JO. 3 of these 4 weren’t supposed to come back this season. I’m sure we’ll see Arenas sometime in the next 7 days. He might play against Chicago because he likes to talk trash at his BFF Larry Hughes. Gil may also get ready for the Celtics next week because he’s still upset at their organization for not drafting him in a year which they had 3 first round picks. Gil may come back Friday because he knows he can beat a 100% Chris Quinn with only 60% health.
But, the one thing we need to be aware is that once he’s back, he’s a starter. There is no going back.

There are 11.946 million reasons why Gilbert should play tonight. If he is not playing after being cleared by the doctors, then he is stealing from the team, the owners, and the fans. Put up or shut up. It’s getting old. I don’t care about his future contract situation. He is healthy now and is under contract for 11.946 million dollars to play THIS year. Plain and simple. Gilbert’s worry about hurting his chances of getting a max deal by playing these games is a reflection of his selfishness and not of the teams current situation. CB3, AD, Stevenson, etc. have been playing all night like warriors and have dealt with numerous injuries and fatigue. I believe Gilbert owes it to this teammates to play and get them a better chance to do something in the playoffs.

I’m glad AD and Tuff Juice will give it a go tonight, thank’s for the update SportzWiz. Now that I think about it I wouldn’t be shocked to see Gil steppin on court tonight, I mean he’s Gilbert…. Anyway I don’t really care about him coming back (as long as he doesn’t come back during a game I dont see!!) but I definitely care about winning and every single remaining games are gonna be hard and important (yes even Miami’s gonna be hard, I mean we lost to atlanta and almost to the clippers lately…) so I really hope the guys can get back to 100% as quickly as possible after that crazy west coast trip! Bucks are 6-30 on the road this season. Wiz are 21-15 at home this season.
The Raps have Hawks tonight at the ATL. I’m picking the home team.
The Celtics try to go for 60 wins tonight against the Pacers. I have the W to Boston.
The Bobcats try to contain LeBron at the aptly named “Bobcats Arena”. I sense a monster night by J-Rich with 7 threes. Bobcats in an upset with LeBron getting 1 technical out of frustration.

Who said tonights game was going to be easy? We will need to play smart controlled basketball tonight, and we need to score and play defence. The Bucks would not like anything better than to play spoiler and push us, they will play hard and play to win, we should not sleep on these games. As for
Gil, I am disapointed, I watch AJ and CB play through injuries and hurting and still help this team win, he has been cleared to play and we are in a playoff push, do what you get paid to do and help this team, we are all holding our breath for his return, maybe it is time to exhale and move on.

Gil doesn’t want to go out and suck. I wonder if he hasn’t been able to find his form in practice. Maybe he just isn’t ready? What use is it to the Wizards to have him come back and not hit his shots and turn the ball over. He wants to come back and be his all star self. I think its smart….

I just can’t stop thinking about Gil. What if he actually isn’t “mentally” ready and doesn’t come back this season?? At the same time I imagine all these faces smiling when Gilbert will step oncourt tonight (I mean if as a part of me feels he’s playing again and want a crazy come back, at the same time coming back against the celtics would also be crazy!!!). Any way I’m sure Gil’s happy to see we’re all wondering “what the hell?!” just as when he announced he would opt out.
suzie-qwiz I’m totally with ya. We have already lost to this team (despite crazy plays by DeShawn if I remember well) and we have a tendency to shine when not expected to and to fall well at the worst times, so tonight’s game has to be played seriously, but no problem about that I believe in our guys. I mean who would like to head to a party after losing to the bucks, and even worse how would DeShawn feel if when waking up tomorrow to celebrate his 27th birthday he would have to remember of losing to the bucks the night before!

there is no rush. We are all dying to see him play. But remember how he started the season? It wasn’t great look at the %s. Thats not what the team needs now. He want to come out and help the team. So let him get into shape and then come out firing!

Yeah that’s what I also was thinking about. But at this time, Gil could only hurt us this season, I mean he’s far from having his wind back, that’s a first point. We all know how “well” he plays defense and as you mentionned it he hasn’t started amazingly well when restarting seasons and not playing 66 games is definitely restarting a season…

Gilbert Arenas is my favorite player of all time…I can’t wait for him to play again. One of the things that makes him so special is his lightning speed. Drives the lane like nobody else. When you have a serious knee injury it effects your speed especially on those first two steps but it also effects your fearlessness. He will be a different player. I have had two bad knee blowouts. I still play but its not the same as before.

Seriously?! It does not take this long to get into shape, he’s been in practice for what seems like forever. Its the NBA, with the best trainers in the world. I’m sure that there is a lot of pool work he could or could have done while he was hurt not to put any pressure on that knee. He set a date on national tv that said he was going to play a month ago today, March 2nd vs New Orleans. I would feel much better about him not playing tonight if he didnt keep saying he would come back(aka Cleveland and Detroit games) This is no longer funny, he’s been cleared, he practically has to play, it should be a mandatory thing. He’s not earning his money THIS year, i understand his fear for next year and his “BIG” contract, however, he has to earn the money the wiz are paying him this year. CB3, Antawn, and Daniels are playing through injuries, its maybe his time to do the same. And dont get me wrong I am a huge gilbert fan, I am under the shadow of his poster as I type, but this has just gone on too long. This has the potential to be a championship caliber team when healthy. But I do hope Gilbert can stay safe and not get hurt again.
-Lets go GILBERT!! and the wiz

I am trying to understand that if you are cleared to play, then the choice of whether you show up or not would not be discretionary. It would be mandatory! If it doesn’t go well, then coach (of the year) Jordan can always take him out. We need another point guard to give us 10 minutes a game. Mason and Stevenson are doing their best, but there is no substitute. I have to believe that Arenas will play tonight. Nothing like a little drame. Does anyone see a “Willis Reed” like entrance tonight?
By the way, I am still ticked off at that foul called against Stevenson against Kobe late in that overtime game. I know Ivan Carter, in his blog today says the calls are all even. I disagree, and that call on Stevenson was exhibit A. In a game as tight as that, you don’t make a call like that. Where was the call when Nick missed the fadeaway jumper with the Laker riding his back?
OK Wiz, you are back home with Caron and AD back in the line-up. You got a team with poor record playing against you. Let’s bring home the bacon tonight and clinch a spot in the playoffs!

They’re getting dominated in the paint right now. It has nothing to do with Gilbert but this is ridiculous. The only time we can get a rebound is if Yi Jianli tries and shoot it!

I don’t mean to be a jerk, but I have to disagree with the comments on Ruffin. Although he did do a lot of the dirty work, he was hardly a fan favorite. I’m sure I don’t have to remind you of that unfortunate incident against Toronto last year. I’m not hating on anybody, but I doubt I’m the only one who wasn’t upset to see Ruffin go.

good first half we need to “step on them” as AD would say and come out strong and fast in the 3rd… i wish haywood would get the ball a little more but other than than we are looking good and Gil has not lost a step hope he can get his wind and we can push on to the playoffs with a full banged up but playing team

The Wiz let them hang around and hang around. Gil bit on that last play and gave that guy an open shot. How is it that Jamison doesn’t just make the sure pass to Daniels to run out the clock?
This loss was brutal. But the Bucks seemed to get all the loose balls. Bogut played big in the post.
Hopefully no more injuries. This team sure is snake bit. Maybe one day some luck will come our way.

It doesn’t matter what our playoff seed is if we can’t rebound and play defense better than that.

Don’t sweat it Bridge, the point of these last games is to 1 hopefully stay out of the 7th spot and 2 to figure out how to mesh gil back in the lineup. Not to make excuses, but the first home game after a long road trip is one of the harder ones. Hope the D gets back to where it was though soon.

OK we lost, its alright. We will suit up and play again, I agree w/Bridge lets look at the big picture, this was a costly game for us not the loss but the pending medical report. I don’t care who we play without DS and AJ we are done.

So I just got home to find out I was unsuccessful in taping the game and just saw the result. Ultimate back-breaker. Is it possible for the ball to be touched, then passed, then shot in 1.1 seconds? Seems like 1.1 seconds would be up while the ball was in the air on the pass to Sessions.
But seriously, I feel relieved I didn’t get to see the game. That looked like an ultimate heartbreaker. I feel for the guys tonight. And some one let me know – what is the deal with DeShawn and Antawn? And Caron? Geez it’s like how could this night be any worse? And on the night Gil returns.
We better see a surge from our guys. We have Gil back. We are veterans. The time is now. We must win a good amount of these games. I feel like 5 or 6 days ago everything was great. Now we gotta get down to winning.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time April 2, 2008 at 9:45 PM
That was horrible. A slightly different pass on the turnover and time runs out; we win. But, it should never have come to that.
Milwaukee is *not* a team that should score 110 on us.
They had 29 assists — that means we were continually slow on defense. They had 7 more shots than we did.
There were times when we looked great on offense (and times when we made *them* look great on offense!).
Gilbert shot well, but he looked a little slow at points, esp. his defensive reactions. And in 20 minutes he had 4 turnovers and no steals.

I guess I said too many stupid things about Gilbert and the basketball gods decided to get back on me by making me fall asleep about 20 minutes before the game and wake up now ( 11:25 pm)…. I can’t believe this type of things happens to me, anyway Gilbert did do his thing, playing some Gilbertology on all of us and we lost…. I’ll try to catch that game tomorrow or something…. how did I fall asleep……..

Mamma Mia… I was there, and I am just shocked. It was such a great game until the very end. Sad sad sad… watching the shot clock challenge or whatever they call it in basketball. Hard to believe that shot counted, and that he made it at all! oh my goodness… It was SO GREAT to see Gilbert, though!!! I am really looking foward to seeing more of him. I have missed him so.
Yours in suffering, gbkdc (sarcasm)…

I checked the replay – it was Gil that bit on the last play. They drafted the perfect one second play. The guy still had to make the shot, though.
Hopefully, Jamison can get back soon. How long does it take to come back from a sprained shoulder?

Thanks DJ/Sport Wiz for posting the injury updates. I’m happy to see that we could get updates on this rather than hearing how bad we played; which I think we didn’t even play as bad as people are making it. Hint Utah…
It’s time for us to pick up and go to the next game and wish our injured players support.
Because without all of them who are injured or playing while injured there wouldn’t be those stats that some people love to characterize games off of or someone to point the finger at heh? (Maybe I’m being an A**hole right now, but come on pointing fingers or looking at stats saying who is bad isn’t going to accomplish anything.)
WIZ FANS STEP UP AND SHOW THEM SOME SUPPORT!!!!

Yes, Daniels should have gotten the pass. And it’s hard to believe 1.1 seconds didn’t run out before he shot. And Arenas should have been in Session’s face. But it never should have come to that. Like so many times over the past _____ years, defense is what killed us.

The word is that gil won’t play tonight (check the post). I didn’t think he would play but still I have to say I’m kind of not understanding him right now, is he gonna wait for the next national broadcast in DC to play?? No offense of course as he hasn’t spoken so far I’m just saying what pops into my head right now.
Anyway the most important for tonight is to get Antonio and Caron back! We do need them, even in a game against the bucks.
GO WIZARDSSSS (and please no” 17 points deficit and then a run” tonight please!)
